Road Trip

Ros pushed her foot on to the accelerator as Lucas glared in the wing mirror of the small pool car. He had wondered if Moran had more information on them than they had expected. It was clear he was more than just the vile racist thug Adam and the others had believed him to be so many years earlier.

"Tenacious little creeps aren't they?" Ros stated as she weaved in and out of traffic. Getting to the small Welsh town seemed to be even less likely. Moran's ex wife had agreed to meet with the 'police' investigating her son's death in the bombing, Ros had begun to wonder if she had known more than they expected. Had she told Moran they were going to visit her? Did she know about her son running to do her ex husband's bidding.

"Getting annoying now."

"Yeah." Ros swung the small car off the motorway into the dual carriageway heading towards the capital of Wales. The small black Kia Picanto followed them. Ros swore loudly before slipping off the dual carriage way into a side street. The car followed them. Ros narrowed her eyes as Lucas checked his gun. He was as tense as she was but knew he had to keep his cool. Images of Amy and James flashed through his mind. There was no way he was going to not let Harry or Carrie tell the children they weren't coming home.

"Car park, next street." Lucas stated as he pressed the sat nav.

"No." Ros pushed her foot to the floor causing several flashes of light to illuminate the car as speed cameras flashed in protest. Ros smiled, knowing Ruth would not be happy to have to hack into yet another database to remove some licence ending points. She knew the men following them would also be photographed by the speed camera, it meant they could actually identify who Moran and Towers' had drawn into their plan. Seconds later she pulled the car into a waste ground near the city centre. Lucas frowned as he realised what she was doing. There was a fair chance that whatever Ros was planning meant that both her and Lucas would end up dead.

"Ros, Adam and Zoe barely survived this." He turned in his seat, ready to fire. Ros shrugged her shoulders.

"Not exactly planning on us dying." She swung the car around, gunning the engine as she drove straight towards the smaller car forcing the driver to swerve. Moments later the small pool car headed away from the car park towards the city centre, leaving the Kia Picanto head first in the ditch beside the articulated lorry Ros had swerved to avoid. Breathing heavily she drove to the car park Lucas had pointed out earlier, aware that Lucas was furious but not caring.

"Ah." Malcolm walked across the Grid as Tariq looked up. The dimmed lighting of the Grid made the room seem almost claustrophobic. All Malcolm really wanted to do was go home to Sarah and the dogs but he knew there was little chance of that while Ruth was in hiding and Ros and Lucas headed to a Welsh town only he seemed to have heard of.

"Ah? I do not like it when you 'ah'." Dimitri stated. "What have you found?"

"Probably nothing of any significance."

"Malcolm." Beth raised an eyebrow. "You saying that makes me think it is the most significant thing we've found since the Sunday morning bomb. What is it?"

"Ros and Lucas are being followed."

"Ok. Can we warn them?"

"No." All eyes turned to the Pods as Harry's voice filtered through the Grid. Ruth stood next to him as Harry spoke.

"Where are the kids?" Beth asked immediately. "Ruth, you are supposed to be dead. Turning up for work isn't actually going to keep that story up." Ruth smiled wryly.

"With Sarah. She's fine by the way Malcolm." Ruth stated. "We can't warn Ros and Lucas. Our computers are compromised."

"No, no no." Malcolm frowned as Calum and Tariq began to tap away at keys and run virus checked.

"Shit, shit shit." Calum stated as he found the bug Ruth had been referring to.

"I found it an hour ago when I tried to hack into our system." Ruth stated. "I couldn't get in. I should be able to. I hacked in."

"I didn't think you hacked." Zaf smiled as he emerged from the kitchen. Ruth raised an eyebrow.

"Zaf."

"Harry." Zaf flopped down in the chair.

"All comms are offline until we know more." Harry marched towards his office as the three technical guys started sweeping the Grid for bugs. Ruth shook her head before following her husband into the office. She was furious that someone had been able to not only follow Lucas and Ros but infiltrate the Grid. She knew Harry was terrified they had a mole. After the debacle surrounding Connie's death she just hoped it wasn't the case.

"Harry." She opened the office door as he began checking his office for listening devices. "Harry." She stepped nearer to him, trying not to wince as her back jarred with each movement.

"How? That's what I want to know. How could it be possible?"

"Technology." Ruth stated as he looked up. "Every computer system in the world has a weakness. You know that."

"Not here. The Grid is supposed to be impenetrable."

"You don't think any of the team did this?" Ruth spoke quietly as Harry ran a hand over his face.

"No. I don't want to think that." He sighed. "Not again. Connie was a friend for years, I trusted her and look what happened. People died because of her betrayal. Sugarhorse was secure until."

"I know."

"I don't think I could deal with that again."

"Harry."

"It can't be one of us."

"Harry, Towers has access to this place. You know that. Didn't Ros say Sophie was a little cagey in your last visit to Whitehall? Maybe she needs to tell us something." Ruth stepped towards him. Harry nodded before pulling her into his arms.

"Ruth, what would I do without you?" Harry kept his voice low, almost whispering the words in her ear. "I can't believe I almost had to find out."

"I'm not going anywhere." Ruth sighed. "One day you'll believe me. But Harry, don't let this turn into revenge. I know they hurt Graham, I know Gracie and I were hurt but we are fine now. Well, the kids are." She sighed as he tucked a strand of brown hair behind her ear. "I'll get there. Spinal Shock could be a lot worse."

"You should be in rehab."

"And Towers should be in prison." Ruth stated firmly. "We don't always end up where we are supposed to be."

"True." He kissed her gently. "Towers will get what's coming to him." He stepped away as he signalled for Adam and Zaf to join them in the office.

"Boss." Zaf smiled cheekily at Ruth. Adam frowned.

"Get Sophie Davies in the interview rooms. She's hiding something. Then get a message to Ros and Lucas. Get them back here, the traitor is much closer than we thought."
