"I can't believe that he has forgotten this. I can't believe it!"
You were in your room, walking around from one side to another, nervous. It was 8 pm and you had an engagement at 9 pm, but you were waiting for that person who had to pick you up.
"I swear that after this you will not away with it"
Your voice resounded in the room. Outside it was raining and you felt how the wind was blew, hitting your window. You were going from one side to another, dressing yourself to go to the compromise. Because your nerves, you were clumsier than normal. You were throwing everything when you were looking for something.
"Where the hell is the dress?"
You yelled furious in the middle of the empty room. You took hours trying to find that dress. You couldn't wear another dress because you were saving that dress for a long time to wear it on a special occasion, and this was a special occasion. And he still had not arrived. You were cursing in every word that you were saying. You felt rage and nerves at the same time. But also fear, thinking that he had forgotten. You finally found the dress and you grabbed it.
"Of course it had to be here!" Shit, this man never learns that he mustn't touch my stuff! If it had been left where it was probably already I'd be ready. But not. And then the men have the courage to say that it's always our fault when women are overdue for an appointment. Assholes."
You were standing watching the beautiful short dress in black silk V-neck that he had given you for your birthday. It was beautiful. You closed his wardrobe, where you had found the dress, and you saw yourself in the mirror. You had lost weight from the time he had given it to you. You were looking for a needle and thread to try to make the dress fits you. Once you finished, you looked yourself in the mirror again. You smiled. That dress could do magic in any woman who wears it.
"Shoes. Now I have to find shoes."
You said after seeing you for a while in the mirror. You went to the closet where you store your shoes. You didn't have trouble finding them. They were high heels that matched with the dress. You sat on the bed to put them, and then you stood.
"Oh damn, women really should win some kind of award for putting up a pair of shoes that look like they're going to pierce the foot just to try to see us beautiful. I just hope not to trip over something and be able to hold this shoes all night long. Fingers crossed. "
You said as soon as you felt the sharp pain that those high heels were causing. Finally, you walked towards the table where you kept all your makeup. You grabbed the concealer to cover all your imperfections in the face and then you put rouge to add a little color to your cheeks. You stopped in the eyes to first apply black eye shadow and eyeliner then ending with mask. You looked yourself in the mirror. Only one thing was missing to complete the makeup. A little of lip-gloss. Once again you looked yourself in the mirror, you were already ready. You smiled and you put a bit of perfume.
It would be a great night, but he still had not arrived.
"Oh holy shit, you cannot do this to me. You said you were going to remember, you said that you weren't going to plan anything so we could hang out together on this night, special for the two of us. Dammit, it's our anniversary! And I, like a dumb, I believed you."
You got out of the room to go to the living room, sit on the couch and wait until he arrives. You had already been waiting more than 3 hours for him. You decided to grab a bottle of wine you had stored in the wine cellar and you poured a glass. He still had not arrived and you started to think about your relationship.
You had met a little over three years, an ordinary day. You were walking along the quiet street, doing some shopping. You almost never went out to shop, but that particular day you were very happy because your sister had graduated from Harvard University with an MD degree. You were very happy for her accomplishments, because you knew how hard it was to study at Harvard, but she had achieved. So there you were, trying to buy a special gift. You thought of buying something fun, like a human skeleton model that she had needed to study physiognomy. You came to a shop where they sell all sorts of things and there you saw what you wanted to give to your sister. You stared at the human skeleton model, thinking it was the perfect gift, but a person's voice interrupted you when you were going to tell the shop owner that you were going to buy it.
"Alright, a person who is staring at a human skeleton model and thinking seriously about buying it may have several problems. She is a psychopath who needs a human skeleton to plot how it's gonna be the death of her next victim, either or is a lonely person who needs some human company to feel the presence of someone or rather something. It's something very terrifying when you stop to think about it."
You turned to see who had ruined plans to buy the human skeleton model as the perfect gift. A young man was looking at you with a smile on his face. It was a very nice man with curly hair and big and beautiful hazel eyes. Apparently he was having so much fun, watching you. You just stared at him, frowning.
"Hi I'm Darren and I can swear that I'm a real person and not just a human skeleton model"Darren said with a smile, stretching his hand to greet you. You sighed to hear the way he introduced himself, but you stretched out his hand.
"It's a pleasure, boy who screws plans. You can call me Bones. I think it's ideal for the occasion."You said, trying to continue the joke. The boy laughed to hear your answer.
"Well Bones, that's a very witty reply. I think I like you already." Darren said, looking amused with a smile. "And what brings you here, looking for a human skeleton model? You don't look like one of those people who enjoy torturing people before killing them or seem like a lonely girl." Darren said, glancing your whole body quickly.
"Well ..." You started to tell him quickly, so he could look into your eyes again because you always get nervous every time someone looks at you from head to toe. You weren't used for any man looking at you, neither that makes you some kind of compliment."I'm just looking for a gift for my sister. She just graduated as a doctor. So I thought, -Wow! This gift is perfect for her! - You know, doctors, human skeletons models, everything is connected. But here you come; ruining my plans and making me look like a real idiot."You answered, crossing your arms and raising an eyebrow. Darren smiled even more.
"Well, I've always considered the plans ruiner."He said almost proudly. You laughed.
"Well, plans ruiner, has been a pleasure to meet you. Now if you excuse me, I have to go to get a new gift for my sister. Maybe I'm gonna get some place where I can get chloroform."You said, bowing your head and you left the shop.
You started to walk down the street, wondering what you could give to your sister now. Clearly, the idea of buying a human skeleton wasn't a viable option.
"How about if you just give her a stethoscope? It's very useful for doctors, you know?"Darren's voice shouted after you. You stopped and turned to face him.
"What the hell is that?"You looked at him, frowning with an amused smile.
"Well, just let's say it's something that all doctors have hanging on their neck"Darren said once he reached you. The two started to walk together."Come with me, I know a place where you can find those stuffs"
You stayed on the couch still thinking about how weird was the day you met. You looked your glass; you had finished the wine, so you poured another drink of wine. You started to remember the day of your first date, when you went from being friends to become a couple. It had been just two years ago.
That day you were a little nervous. Darren had invited you to dinner. You had dinner together many times already, but this was something different, you had a hunch. Darren was no longer an ordinary guy who only sang in a bar and made Disney' covers. Gradually he became known and he had already auditioned for acting in a television series called Glee. Finally, after he auditioned for several times, Darren had got the role of a young gay teenager. He had changed; he had no curls, because he had cut his hair. He seemed very happy with everything that he was achieving.
You and Darren had become great friends, and his sudden fame had not interrupted your friendship. Even though now you couldn't see each other very often because he was too busy, you always found a moment to talk. Whether hanging out together, video calls or simply by text messaging. That night Darren had invited you to dinner and he had asked you to wear a nice dress. His voice sounded a bit weird and you sensed that something was going to change that night.
That night Darren led you to a nice restaurant where you had to book a table. It was a luxurious restaurant, something that you weren't used. Both of you had a nice evening. He told you about all his experiences and things that had happened, with his usual sense of humor. You, meanwhile, told him your adventures in the office complaining about your grumpy boss.
"Come on Bones, I want to show you something in what I've been working lately."Darren told you once you finished your dinner.
Darren kept calling you Bones, although he knew how your real name was. You let him to call you that way because it makes you remember that day when you met in the most unusual way. He led you to his apartment and took you to his room, which was messy as usual.
"Oh crap, Darren! How can you live in the middle of the mess?"You said, grabbing a few things to start arrange the room. Darren looked at you funny and stopped you, forcing you to sit on the bed.
"It's a habit. You know what they say; I have order in my own mess."Darren said, laughing, grabbing his guitar."Well, I said I had been working on something lately and I wanted that you were the first person who listen it"
Darren said, as he arranged the strings on the guitar. He sat on the bed beside you, smiling as always. You lent him much attention. You loved hear him singing and playing his guitar. Somehow, that produced you peace and joy. Darren began singing his new song, looking straight in your eye. When the song ended, you stayed stunned, looking into his eyes. You got nervous; you knew he had written that song for you, this was the reason why he wanted you to be the first person to listen to it. Darren moved closer to you, leaving aside the guitar. He grabbed your arms, while looking in the eyes.
"Bones ..."Darren started to say, with a twinkle in his eyes and with a voice that you had never heard before."I think that the song already says everything that I feel for you"
You said nothing, just gulped. You already knew where all this was leading. Darren came even closer to rest his forehead against yours and kiss your lips gently. You couldn't resist. You were not sure if you wanted to risk your friendship with him to begin a love affair. You've never had much success with relationships and you didn't want to lose him. But as soon as he kissed you, you felt that nothing bad could happen, that was really what you wanted and what you felt. With that kiss you finally admitted that you loved Darren and he loved you in the same way.
"I want to share my life with you, Bones. You're the only person that makes me feel complete, who makes me really happy. Please, let me be part of your life. I cannot stand another second without being able to kiss you, without being able loving you"Darren whispered in front of your lips. You looked at him intensely.
"I want to be part of your life too, Darren."You answered with a smile, also whispering in front of his lips.
At that time, Darren grabbed your cheeks to kiss you again, but this time the kiss was more intense and deep. Slowly you were lying in bed and you were carried away by the passion that was running through your veins. Darren began kissing your neck, while you started taking off his shirt to feel the warmth of his body. Darren did the same thing with you and he began to explore all over your body with kisses. Both felt how your bodies were united to become one body, feeling the touch of your naked bodies in the light of the moon that was entering in the room. You were two lovers who were expressing your love for the first time.
Calling to mind the first time you made love made you shudder. It was a very special moment for both and you could never forget. It was the day that you and Darren decided to spend your lives together. And in fact you had done so. After a year you moved into an apartment to start living together. Your coexistence was excellent. Of course you had small fights, sometimes not so small. But it was something normal, the same happened to all the couples in world from inconceivable times. But, for some reason, the excellent relationship that both of you had wasn't so good now. Darren was living the booming of his life as a performer and singer. All his professional life was slowly improving and now he was a person recognized worldwide. He had millions of fans around the world and he seemed to like very much to everyone. Absolutely, Darren was a person extremely attractive and friendly. Despite his great progress that made you feel very proud and happy, there was something that was making you feel bad. Darren barely was at home, he was always travelling and he was on show from show. He was always busy and you rarely saw him. Your relationship was weakening day by day because of his absence. Of course you supported him in everything he did, because you knew very well how much it had cost him get where he was and you knew how important it was for him. But you missed him. You missed to spend your time with him; you missed to have a normal life. You missed go for a walk down the street with him without having to be concerned about the millions of fans and paparazzi who followed him anywhere he goes. This was definitely not what you wanted for your life. Even though you love with all your heart, you needed a person to be next to you at that time you needed it. Many times you've had to come to your home after a long and difficult work day where everything seemed to go wrong, needing a person who was waiting for you with a smile telling you that everything would be fine. But every day when you got home, there was no one who was waiting for you to give you a hug. Darren used to come home when you were already asleep, and when you got up he was no longer there, because he had to go to work. You weren't blaming him for that, it was only you needed to spend more time with the person you loved. Inside you felt deep anguish to see how exhausted Darren was, but you couldn't do anything for him. Whenever you tried to talk to him to tell him that he needed to take a break because he was exceeding work, he got in a bad mood and stopped talking to you for the rest of the day. He told you that you couldn't understand that he needed to do that, because never again was going to have the same opportunities as the ones he was living now. You did understand him, but think about the fact he was neglecting his health made you feel bad. Your life with him wasn't being that life you both thought you would have two years ago.
A tear running down your face made you realize that you were still waiting for Darren to go to celebrate your anniversary. He had not yet come and it was too late. You looked at the bottle of wine. Already you had finished it all. You decided that it was too late for the dinner you had planned. Slowly and sadly, you got off the couch to go to bed to sleep again without him. As soon as you got up you felt a little queasy and dizzy, but nothing happened. When you were about to go upstairs, you heard the noise of a car and immediately how a person got into the house. You stopped and looked at the door to see how Darren came in, wearing an elegant suit.
"I'm sorry, love. I was late because there were a few people trying to get an autograph, it was chaos!"Darren said, getting closer to you, to greet you with a kiss. You turned your face to avoid the kiss and rolled your eyes.
"Don't worry, Darren. I was about to go to sleep anyway"You answered coldly, and started to climb the stairs. Darren grabbed you by the arm to stop you.
"Really, I'm so sorry! But we're still in time to go to our big anniversary dinner!"Darren said with a smile. You looked at him sharply.
"Darren, it's already 11 pm. Our big anniversary dinner like you said was going to be at 9 pm"You answered sarcastically. Act this way with him hurt you, but you had to make him understand that it hurts you to know the fact that he couldn't take a little time to be with you."And I'm tired, Darren. Good night."You started taking the stairs again, but Darren grabbed you by the arm once more, getting closer to you.
"I'm really sorry. Please, let's go to the dinner. Please Bones."Darren looked at you with those puppy dog eyes that were irresistible.
"Alright Darren, fine. Let's go."You answered and you came down the stairs to go to the door while Darren smiled happy.
Both got into the car and Darren began to drive. You were silent, Darren concentrated on the road and you were looking through the car window, watching how rained intensely. Darren's voice finally broke the silence.
"What is happening to us, Bones? This is not the way we thought our life would be. "
"You know very well what is happening, Darren."You answered sharply, while you kept seeing through the window of the car. Darren was still driving.
"No, I have no idea. Help me to understand it, please!"Darren said, almost pleadingly.
"Are you fucking kidding me, Darren?"You finally looked at him incredulously, almost yelling."Darren no relationship works if you don't even try to make it really works! How the hell do pretend that we remain the same guys in love that we were two years ago if we only see each other at night to say good night?"You said furious. You couldn't take anymore all the repressed feelings you had. You could see how Darren's face was expressing sadness.
"But I do, I try! I do attempt to try to make this work. But it seems that you're not interested in improving this situation. I cannot do anything more, Bones. As much as I love my job, I cannot stand any longer this tense situation we are experiencing. It seems as if you don't care or you don't realize at all the effort I do to maintain the balance between work and you! You never knew appreciate the hard effort I am doing!"Darren said, this time a bit furious, increasing the speed of the car.
"What the fuck are telling me Darren?" You said, yelling with rage. "Are you trying to say that I don't care about you? You don't have the foggiest idea how awful it feels to coming home and realize that no one is waiting for you, you have no idea how it feels to need a simple hug of the person you love and not get it, you have no idea of how it feels to not be able to share the time with person you love, see how the person you love is away from you. You don't have the slightest idea of how sad and desolate I am, Darren. So don't you dare to say that I don't care, because if I don't care about you, Darren, I'd have broken up with you a long time ago."You said screaming and crying.
"And why then don't you leave me in peace once for all and make your life happy and perfect with someone who can give you all that I don't give you? So maybe you'd stop thinking that I'm selfish and I'd have the chance to meet a person who truly understands me!"Darren said shouting very loud, still increasing the speed of the car. You could see how Darren was doing a grimace of sadness when he was listening to you, it seemed as if your words were going through his chest and were causing him much pain.
"Screw you, Darren! You're an idiot, a callous who cannot understand that I really care about you. You're an asshole, you just don't give a shit of how I'm feeling right now. You know what? We ended up here!" You shouted even louder, your anger didn't let to control your words.
"Fantastic, we're done! I don't want to see your fucking face anymore! It was absurd to think that everything could have worked for us! I'm a huge dork!"Darren was still yelling and driving faster without paying attention to what was around him for his fury.
"Perfect, blithering idiot! Fuck you Darren, I don't longer..."You started to yell.
At that time, Darren had stopped paying attention where he was driving to look into your eyes. Darren didn't notice that the light had turned red and yet he kept driving at high speed. You could see how Darren's eyes were looking at you with deep sadness and pain before that white car ran over you.
You opened your eyes slowly. Everything was very blurry. You heard how millions of ambulance sirens and police cars were approaching. You heard how many people were screaming near where you were. You felt how you were lying on that cold sidewalk. You could feel the raindrops falling on your body, which was surrounded by millions of pieces of broken glass. You were bleeding and you couldn't move, you felt a huge pain throughout your body. Shortly after, you felt how some hands helped you stand up while you were slowly regaining vision. There you saw Darren, not far from where you were. A feverish chill ran through your body and made you freeze of fear. Darren was lying on the sidewalk, motionless, crossed by a large piece of glass of the windscreen which had broken when the white car ran over and you were thrown. You saw a sea of blood surrounding Darren's body. You tried to run toward him, but the person who was holding you didn't let you go. Instead, that person held you tighter. You screamed the name of Darren with all your strength while crying, desperate. At one point, the person who was holding you was neglected and you did you get away. Despite the pain you were feeling and the blood that you kept losing, you ran as fast as you could to get where Darren was. Darren was on his back, so you turned him back slowly. His eyes were closed and his forehead had a large cut. You placed your hand on his forehead to stop the bleeding a little, while you were tapping his cheek to make him to regain the reason. Darren remained motionless and he was very pale. You tried to give mouth-to-mouth for him to regain the reason, still weeping inconsolably. It didn't work. Minutes later, the ambulance arrived and a doctor put Darren on a stretcher, while you were taken by another ambulance. You did everything as possible so not to be separated from him, but you failed. The ambulance, in which Darren was, went away at full speed. Before the both of you were separated, you saw that in Darren's face, a tear was falling from his eye.
You were in the emergency room; waiting for a doctor comes and tells you how Darren was. You had suffered some damage, but nevertheless you had the strength to stand up and go see Darren. You were nervous and impatient. You couldn't stop walking around the emergency room. The wait seemed endless.
Hours passed before a doctor left the room where Darren was. You quickly approached him expecting he tells you something, yet he ignored you and he went his way. Your nerves were making shiver your whole body. You needed to know how Darren was, you needed to hear news of him, and you needed to see him. However, nobody paid you attention. A few minutes later another doctor left the room where Darren was. The doctor walked slowly towards where you were. You looked at him with an expression of supplication. Finally the doctor opened his mouth to tell you the medical report.
"I'm sorry"The doctor said placing his hand on your shoulder, with the typical expression of professional doctors, claiming a false consent when the news were definitely not good. The doctor kept saying the medical report, but you weren't listening to him anymore.
All that was around you began to crumble to leave you alone in the midst of the darkness. An extreme cold ran through all over your body and you started to tremble until you couldn't keep standing any longer. Bleak and paralyzed, you let fall on the floor. Quickly you got pale and you started to feel like all hope was being replaced by a sense of desolation.
"We need you to recognize the body, Ms."The doctor said, with professionalism.
Unable to think, unable to leave the state of shock, the doctor led you to a cold room where a body was covered with a blanket. Both came to where the body was. The doctor slowly pulled the blanket to be able to see the pale and lifeless body of Darren. Your tears began to fall uncontrollably, unable to believe that what your eyes were seeing was the body of the man that you loved so much for the last time.
You arrived to your house. You opened the door to find a room in the dark, hoping for Darren to go down the stairs to tell you that he had to go to work with his wonderful smile. You stared at the stair for a long time, but Darren didn't go down the stairs.
You slowly climbed stairs to go to the room you shared. The door was closed, as you had left before heading out to the big dinner you would have. You stopped for a while, with your hand on the doorknob. You opened the door and turned on the light. You looked towards all sides, but couldn't find Darren. You went to the bathroom, Darren wasn't there. You went to the balcony, perhaps Darren was there with his guitar as he always used to do. He wasn't. You searched inside the closet, behind the door, under the bed. Darren wasn't anywhere. You laid in bed and you came closer to his pillow. It still retained his smell. You left your tears fall when you finally realized that Darren was not going to come back.
You started to think about the last words Darren heard while his life lasted. "Fuck you" that was the last thing Darren heard. You began to mourn even stronger when you realized the last words that you had said to Darren. You wanted to turn back time; you wanted to tell Darren how much you loved him, and you wanted to say how sorry you were. But Darren was gone and you were never going to be able to ask forgiveness. You looked at the photograph that was on his nightstand. A framed photograph of the two; both smiling and full of life. You grabbed the photo and put it on the pillow of Darren.
"I'm so sorry Darren. I'm sorry with all my soul, Darren. I've never had the intention to hurt you. You are everything to me, Darren. If you were here we would surely be sleeping peacefully hugging or talking about these two years we have spent together in our lives. I wish I could apologize. I wish I could tell you how much I love you. I love you with all my soul, with all my heart, with all my being, Darren. You're the person I love most in this world. You have taught me how to smile at life, you have taught me what love is, you have taught me how to live, Darren. I wish I could turn back time, I would like to be able to avoid all what happened. I wish I could be laughing with you at this time. I wish I could make coffee before you go to work. Please forgive me for all the damage I've done, Darren. Sorry for not having been able to enjoy more time together when you were here. Sorry for not to have been able to understand you, sorry for all those moments in which I wasn't able to support you in your decisions. Sorry for not having shown all the love I felt and I feel for you. Sorry for not having said all that you mean to me. I want to hug you, to kiss you one last time. But you're not here Darren. And I could never thank you for all the moments of happiness you have given me. You've changed my life and thanks to you Darren, I had a happy life. I could never thank you all the things you've done for me. For some stupid reason humans have this habit of not to show the other person how much you love, or not to show the other person how grateful we are for the simple fact of being on our side. We always keep our feelings and all our appreciation for a special occasion rather than prove it every day. Because at the end, the little things we do are those we most remember and that make us happy. I very much regret not having done it before. But for some stupid reason, humans don't realize this until we feel the absence of the other person. How fools are we the humans, aren't we? We don't realize all we have until we lose it. If you were here with me probably you'd agree with me. Darren, please I ask you, don't leave me. I'm not ready. I'm not ready to live without you. I need you. You're the one who always guides me when I'm lost, when I lose my direction. Darren I have fear. I'm very scared. I cannot live without you, Darren. Please come back. Don't leave me, Darren. I need you; my life without you is no longer living. I love you, Darren."
Your voice sounded in the silent room, shedding your tears. You hugged Darren's pillow. His smell was still impregnated in the pillow, and you felt as if he were still there, listening to every word you were saying. Amid crying and hugging Darren's pillow firmly, you fell asleep.
Your watch alarm sounded, but you didn't get up. You had no desire to get up and continue your life normally as if nothing had happened. You closed your eyes again to continue embracing Darren's pillow, smelling his scent that remained intact.
"It is time to get up, small sleepyhead."
That's what Darren had said the last morning of his life when he heard the alarm of the clock ringing. You remembered how he had come to bed to wake you with his dazzling smile, looking at you with an expression of love. You shed a few tears at the thought that he wasn't there to wake you up and give you a kiss. A simple fact of your everyday life that filled you with joy. Those small attitudes of Darren would not be returning, disappeared forever. You stayed in your bed, too weak to get up.
"Don't you think get up? You are going to be late to your job, love"
You could imagine how Darren's voice would have said if he had seen you were still in bed. You could imagine his voice so clearly that even seemed real. You wanted to stay in your bed all day just imagining Darren's voice.
"Well, I'm going to make breakfast. And if in 15 minutes you don't come down the stairs, I'll have to bring you breakfast in bed"
You imagined Darren's voice saying this again, as you imagined his laugh. You missed the sound of his laughter. You closed your eyes even more forcefully to try to remember how he kissed you. You tried to remember those butterflies you felt every time at the touch of his lips in yours, trying to remember the taste of his lips, its texture, its softness.
"I told you that if in 15 minutes you don't come down the stairs I was going to bring breakfast in bed, so here I am. Happy anniversary, my love."
Once again you were imagining Darren's voice and you started to cry. You would have loved this to be real.
"Are you crying, Bones?"
Of course you were crying. If only he were there to say how much you missed him. But that wasn't going to happen.
"What's wrong my small sleepyhead? You feel good? Come on, tell me what's happening. I hate to see you sad. I want to see that beautiful smile you have."
Something weird happened at that moment that made you shudder. You could feel the edge of the bed was sinking, as if someone were sitting. Suddenly you felt how his hand rested on your head to caress your hair. You could feel the warmth of his body. It was an inexplicable feeling, as if he really was there. You turned slowly. Darren was there, in fact, looking at you with those beautiful hazel eyes as you remembered. Darren was there, with that dazzling smile on his face. You blinked and rubbed your eyes. You thought that if this was a dream, you didn't want to wake up. He seemed very real. You stared at him and you, afraid and slowly, put your hand on his cheek to caress it. You closed your eyes and shed some tears as soon as you could feel his warmth and softness of his face. Then you opened your eyes to confirm if that was the product of your imagination. Darren was still there and he frowned slightly. You stayed puzzled.
"Bones? Are you alright? Suddenly you got pale."
You heard how Darren's voice whispered as you pounced on him to hug him tightly.
"I love you Darren. Please don't go, stay with me. I'm so sorry, Darren, please forgive me. I love you, I love you with all my soul Darren"You said crying, still hugging him tightly.
"I would be if I could, love. But unfortunately I have to go to work. But are you sure that you're feeling good?"Darren asked, looking at you in the eyes. You just saw him with eyes full of tears. "Come here" Darren said looking at you sweetly, and he embraced you again. "I also love you with all my soul, small sleepyhead"
For some weird reason, Darren was back. You looked on your phone what day it was. It was yesterday. I couldn't believe it. It was as if fate was giving you another chance. It was giving you a second chance to reverse the tragic accident that had happened.
Darren had gone to work as usual. It was at night and you knew that he would return later. But this time you weren't going to get mad at him. All day you were thinking about how to avoid the accident. You decided that the best thing would be if you go walking to dinner, then in that way you would avoid Darren driving at high speed and that white car won't run over you. It was raining as yesterday. You were wearing the black silk dress again. You were happy because you were able to avoid this accident, then Darren would be back in your life. That night, you waited him quietly in the couch in the living room, this time you didn't drink wine. At 11 pm, as you knew, Darren came home wearing that black and elegant suit.
"I'm sorry, love. I was late because there were a few people trying to get an autograph, it was chaos!"Darren said getting closer to kiss you, and this time you didn't avoid the kiss. You kissed him gently on the lips with a smile.
"Don't worry, love. I just finished to get ready"You answered, caressing his cheek, smiling. Darren smiled at you.
"Thanks for understanding me, I feel like an idiot because I couldn't run away to arrive earlier! Forgive me!"Darren said, looking at you with those irresistible puppy dog eyes.
"No need to apologize. What we have to do now is to enjoy our anniversary dinner!"You said with a bright smile and grabbed Darren's hand, to go outside.
"It seems as if the sky is falling! Look how it's raining! It's totally crazy!"Darren said, heading toward the car, but you stopped him."What happens? Let's go, or we're going to soak!"
"I would like to walk, Darren! Today is a special day, let's do something crazy! Walk in the rain, long ago since the last time we did it and it'll be fun!"You said, excited with a big smile.
"What are you, nuts?"Darren looked at you frowning and amazed."We're gonna arrive all wet and the people working in the restaurant are going to kick our ass! You're totally insane!"
"And what would happen if they kick our ass? At least we'll have a blast! Come on, Darren! Let's go walk in the rain!"You said trying to convince him and then you gave him a deep kiss.
"Whoa! That was very good, more like supermegafoxyawesomehot! Alright, we'll walk in the rain!"Darren said surprised by the kiss and happy.
The two walked in the rain holding hands and laughing. The people who passed beside you in their cars looked at you as if you were crazy. Indeed you were, but you were trying to avoid the accident then worth it. You were all wet and you started to get cold, so you started walking embraced, still laughing by the madness that you were committing.
"Tomorrow I'll end with a major cold, Bones! You're gonna need to take care of me and give me breakfast in bed. I'll also need many caresses!"Darren said, looking at you seductively and winked. He pushed your body closer to his body and he gave you a deep kiss."Kissing in the rain, I feel as if we were in the middle of a romantic movie"Darren laughed, so you did.
You were crossing the street when suddenly Darren stopped to sneeze. Everything happened very fast. Once again you opened your eyes slowly to see blurry, lying on the sidewalk. Once again millions of people were screaming around you and you could hear again the sound of sirens of ambulances and police cars. Your body was drenched in blood again; you felt the same pain you had felt yesterday. You stood with the little strength you had to go where Darren was. A white car had run over you as soon as you stopped because Darren sneezed. Darren was there, lying on the sidewalk, surrounded by blood, motionless. Again, what happened yesterday, it was repeating. You couldn't do anything to avoid the accident. You couldn't do anything to prevent the death of Darren. You couldn't do anything to change the fate.
The next morning when you woke up, you looked around the room to see if Darren was there. You were waiting for that moment that Darren appeared in your room to tell you that it was time to get up. But an hour passed and Darren had not yet appeared. You got up from bed and came down the stairs. You looked for Darren in the living room, the dining room, and kitchen. Darren wasn't there.
You sat on a stool at the kitchen bar. You rested your head on your hands, and you realized this time Darren wouldn't come back. You had been very close to being able to prevent the accident, but failed. You got sad when you thought that you hadn't tried hard enough. You felt the immense silence in the house, a bewildered silence. A silence that didn't allowed you to stop thinking that now you needed to get used to move forward with your life without Darren. You couldn't stand the silence any longer; you didn't want to think about it. You got to put music blaring to distract you from your thoughts. You put upbeat music to make you forget about the fact and reality that you were living. You wanted to get away from reality; you wanted to live in a parallel world where Darren was still there. While dancing and singing with a high voice, you began to make coffee for some breakfast. But you didn't make coffee for you alone; you made coffee for two people, imagining that Darren was still there with you ready to have breakfast with you. You sat down and started talking to nothing, pretending that Darren was there. You stood with your cup of coffee and started to dance and sing as if Darren were doing the same. If someone had seen through the window, would have thought you were crazy. And maybe you were crazy, but you didn't give a shit because you were trying to go back to being happy in your imaginary world where Darren was still with you. You started to laugh when you saw yourself in the mirror, pretending to dance with someone. That laughter turned into tears, when you realized that doing this wasn't going to help you to keep going. Slowly you started to drop on the floor, even with the coffee cup in hand. At that moment, a loud noise coming from the door made you startle. You quickly left the cup of coffee and grabbed a rolling pin from the kitchen. You weren't expecting anyone and, judging by the type of noise, someone was trying to force the door open. Surely the neighbors had called police to complain about loud music. You came to the door with the rolling pin in your hand and you hid behind it. The door finally opened, and you saw how the shadow of a person was entering the house. You waited at the ideal time when the person was as close as possible to you, to get out from behind the door and hit the person on the head with the rolling pin. The person dropped what had in hands to hold your arms and prevent that you hit that person.
"Whoa, whoa Bones! What's going on with you? Are you crazy?"You heard how Darren's voice asked terrified, still holding your arms firmly. "Give me that rolling pin, Bones. Chill out, you could have killed me, Bones! What the hell is going on?"Darren asked for a second time while he took off the rolling pin of your hands and let it fall to the floor.
You stayed looking at Darren terrified and puzzled, crying, as he knelt on the floor to pick up what he had thrown to stop you. You came closer to him to start hitting him in the arm while still crying.
"You stupid! Why are you doing this to me? Why are you playing with my feelings? You're hurting me; I don't know what's going on and you still appearing! What's going on for god sake?"You were sobbing, still hitting him in the arm with the little strength you had.
Darren was still appearing in your life, as if you were reliving the day of you anniversary day after day. This was causing your nerves and sadness, because you didn't know what was happening. It was as if fate was putting you on trial every day, as if you couldn't let him go. You wanted to be with Darren, you wanted he to come back but you knew how the day was going to end and you just couldn't keep reliving the anguish of seeing Darren dead without that you could avoid it. You couldn't stand the idea to relive the most terrible moment of your life every day. Darren just looked at you as if you were crazy, confused, and he grabbed your hands to stop you from hitting him.
"What the hell's the matter, Bones? I just came back to buy something so that we can eat at breakfast, and here you come with a rolling pin to hit my head and then you start hitting me, saying that I appear and that I'm playing with your feelings? I don't understand a shit what's happening!"Darren said while you were still trying to hit him."Goddammit, stop! What the hell is happening to you?"
You finally stopped to embrace him, while shedding your tears on Darren's shoulder. Darren, still confused, hugged you back. You stayed like that for a while until you calmed down. You looked into Darren's eyes. He was looking at you worried, frowning, until finally he gently stroked your cheek.
"What's the matter, Bones? Has something bad happened with your job or your family? I know I'm not too much time with you and that lately we couldn't talk for long. I've been very busy with my work that I haven't given you the attention that you deserve. But I care about you, I really care about you. I'm sorry, Bones. But I'm here with you now to listen to you, so tell me what is happening to you."Darren said, caressing your cheek and still looking at you fondly. Finally, Darren got closer to give you a soft kiss on your lips.
"I'm fine, Darren."You looked at him in the eyes, while you rested your forehead against his. "Don't worry about me. I guess that I only needed to see you once again"
"Don't worry about that, you'll see me every single day of our lives"Darren whispered in front of your lips, smiling slightly. A few tears began to fall on your face, thinking that you really wanted this happen, but you knew that this wasn't going to happen. Darren wiped away the tears from your face slowly. "Don't shed your tears, love. Smiles again, with that beautiful smile you have. I love to see you smile."Darren said sweetly. You tried to smile.
Darren, after breakfast with you, he went to work. Meanwhile, you stayed on the couch in the living room, thinking about how to try to avoid the accident again. Hours passed and you were still thinking with a lost sight until finally you got up to take your coat and go outside to do some shopping. You had decided at last that the only way to avoid the accident, would be to cancel the dinner in the restaurant and instead that, had dinner at home. That way no car would run over you, that way you wouldn't have incidents and Darren wasn't going to die. You were going to buy food to cook dinner yourself. You weren't a good cook, but you were going to handle it. You were walking in the street with a big smile for the satisfaction that produced you to finally have found the solution, until a crazy man on the street that thought he was a preacher, saw you and came running towards where you were. You tried to walk faster to get away from that man, but the man stopped you, grabbing your arm. You had fear, everyone knew that this man was dangerous. However, the man did nothing to you. The man just stared at your eyes deeply while you were looking at him frightened.
"Oh girl. You cannot do anything about it. The destination is already marked and you can't reverse it. The destination is only indicating you that you must go on, but you still have something pending. You have to learn how to let him go, and you have to say goodbye to him. So just enjoy your last hours with him."The man said, still staring at you deeply, and then he let your arm to get away from you.
You stayed looking at him, terrified and bewildered by what you had just heard. How in the earth this man knew what was happening? What was that thing about fate that he told you? Was he trying to tell you that you weren't able to avoid the accident? The man had told that you have to enjoy your last hours with him. Did it mean that Darren was going to die anyway even if you try to save him? You stayed several minutes standing there unable to move while millions of people were walking in front of you quickly as ghosts. With an odd feeling in your chest, you finally decided to continue making purchases you were going to do before you were stopped by this unknown man. Perhaps the man was right, maybe the only thing you could do was enjoy the little time left with Darren. But you weren't going to roll back your plans. You were going to dinner together at home, you were going to enjoy the time left with him the most you can, but also you were going to try that accident doesn't happen. Your head couldn't stop processing thoughts.
Finally, you came back to your home still thinking about what that man told you. You started to cook. While the food was in the oven, you went to change your clothes. Again you wore that black dress. You saw yourself in the mirror. That dress now brought back you bad memories, so you decided to change yourself and you wore a red silk dress, which wasn't as nice as the black dress but however you liked it. You finished the makeup and you went to check the food so it doesn't burn. Once the food was ready, you set the table. You turned off lights and lit some candles; you had decorated the entire table to make it look romantic. When you were putting the glasses and wine on the table, you heard how Darren opened the door.
"Love? Where are you? Why is everything dark?"You heard how Darren's voice said from the living room.
You came slowly toward him silently and you took him by the hand. Darren was startled because I he hadn't seen you coming. You kissed him gently on the neck while you placed your hands on his chest. Darren shuddered to feel the kiss on his neck and you noticed how he started to breathe faster, but he left you continue kissing it, wrapping his arms on your waist. Then, you felt how he approached his face to your ear to whisper something.
"If you keep acting like this, I'll be forced to cancel the dinner at the restaurant and take you to our room right now"Darren whispered seductively in your ear and then he kissed your ear gently.
You did ignore what he said and you kept kissing him on the neck, as you started to rub Darren's chest with your hands. Darren placed one of his hands on your neck to pull you closer and kiss you on the lips deeply. As you were kissing passionately, Darren was leading you to the couch. He made you lay on the couch and then he leaned slowly above you. You felt how his hands were traveling from your legs to your waist exposed, getting up your dress. The kiss was deepening and you started to run your fingers all over Darren's back to finish in his hair. Your fingers ran through each curl of Darren's hair. Darren slowly opened your legs and you started kissing him on the neck again. He closed his eyes and you could hear some moans coming out from his mouth. You gently pushed him away to stand up. Darren stayed staring at you in disbelief and through the darkness you could see how he was raising his arms and shaking his head.
"Today we're not gonna go to have dinner to that restaurant. Instead, we'll have a dinner at home in the light of the candles"You said with a seductive smile and started to walk away.
"What the hell? How dare you leave me so, Bones? Come back now! What am I gonna do with this now?"You heard how Darren's voice shouted from the couch and you smiled.
"Dinner is ready, Darren"You yelled from the dining room.
Darren finally came into the dining room to see how you were standing next to the table, waiting for him with a bottle of wine in your hands. You looked at him seductively, smiling. Darren wanted to get closer to where you were but you took him by the arm and led him to the chair to sit. Once Darren sat down, you stayed standing behind him, extending your arm to grab Darren's glass and pour some wine. Meanwhile, Darren rested his face on your arm to smell your scent with eyes closed. Once you finished pouring wine, you gave the glass to Darren.
"Here you have, sir"You whispered in his ear and kissed his neck. Darren shuddered and grabbed the glass of wine.
By the time Darren tried to take you by the waist, you walked away to serve food. You heard how Darren sighed as if he were frustrated. While you were serving food, you thought it was going to be a very good night.
During the dinner you didn't stop exchanging seductive looks. Both spent the entire dinner talking about all they had done during the day, talking about all the experiences they had lived, recalling old times while music sounded in the background. You were recovering the lost time. You didn't stop smiling and laughing. When you finished dinner, you looked closely Darren's face in the light of candles. You stayed a long time just staring at him. He looked beautiful, candlelit highlighted the factions of his face and his smile was even more beautiful. His eyes looked even shinier. You tried to capture every expression on his face. You smiled happy to have him on your side. Darren lifted his sight to look you in the eye. He was happy; he was looking at you deeply and smiling. You stayed a long time looking at each other in the eye. Darren finally got up and went to your side, stretching his hand to you. You took his hand and he pulled you closer to him. Gently, he placed his hands on your waist, and you wrapped your arms around his neck. He rested his forehead on yours and slowly you started to dance a slow song. You danced in silence, staring into each other' eyes and smiling slightly. When the song ended, you kissed.
"I think this is much better than going to a stupid restaurant"Darren whispered in front of your lips. "Thank you for everything you've done. I cannot express how much I love you."You smiled in his lips and placed one of your fingers in his mouth to silence him.
"I also love you, and you cannot imagine how much"You said, kissing him again.
Darren was leading you to the bedroom as you kissed. Both of you laid on bed. Darren looked at you with a look of deep love before kissing you again, getting closer to you. Slowly he started to loosen your dress. He saw your naked body illuminated by the moonlight, dazzled, before starting to explore all over your body with his lips. His fingers ran through your body, from your feet to your face, and he stopped to caress your cheek with a sweet smile and then he kissed you on the lips. You placed your hands on his hair and started to caress it, as you remembered the first time that your bodies had come together to show your love. In between moans and kisses, your bodies were united, this time confident that what you felt was true love.
You rested your head on Darren's bare chest as he wrapped his arms around you. Both had a smile on your faces. You had thought your relationship was screwed, but eventually you realized that it wasn't. All you needed was to recover the lost time, because the love you had was much stronger than all the difficulties that were happening. To prove your love was all you needed to realize that you two were really happy and that nothing and no one were going to bring you down as long as this love in your hearts endures. That was the moment when you realized what that unknown man had tried to tell you. No matter where Darren was, the only thing needed was to keep him alive in your heart and in this way Darren would always be with you, regardless of distance. Darren was going to be with you till eternity as a long as your heart loves him. You looked up to stare at Darren's eyes. He was staring you fondly with a smile, and his eyes shone brighter than ever. You looked his face intently. You caught his eyes, its brightness and color, his long eyelashes; you noticed every freckle on his face, you looked at his mouth, each slot of his mouth, its texture. You touched his lips with your lips to feel its softness. You were trying to grasp every texture of his face, every feeling. You smelled his scent; you tried to burn it all into your memory. You touched his soft hair slowly still looking at his eyes. Darren was still smiling at you as he caressed your cheek with love. You hugged him to feel the warmth of his body and you looked deeply into his eyes again.
"I love you, Darren. No matter what happens between us, my heart always will love you and it always will remember you. You'll always be the one man who filled my life with joy and love. You'll always be the only man for me and I'll never forget you. You're everything to me and that will never change. I love you with every breath, with every beat of my heart. I'll always love you, although the fate separates us."
That was the last thing you said to Darren before he closed his eyes and his heart stopped beating forever.
The next morning you woke to the sound of your phone. Someone had sent you a text message. Slowly you opened your eyes and you found yourself in another room. It was a very small room and you were in a twin size bed. Astonished, you got out of bed to go to read the text message you had received. It was your sister.
"Little sister, finally you can call me doctor! I just graduated from Harvard University! I hope to celebrate this tonight with you!"
You were perplexed. You looked intently at the room where you were. You were in the same room where you used to live three years ago. And your sister had just graduated from medical. That evening you knew what you were going to do. You were going to go shopping to get a gift for your sister, you were going to try to get something funny, you were going to meet this guy who ended up being the love of your life. Somehow, it was as if you had dreamed about what was going to happen in the future. You quickly changed out your clothes to make those purchases. You knew where you had to go and what to buy. You were anxious, you wanted to see Darren, that guy that you've dreamed about. Even though you had not even meet him yet, you knew you were going to love him. You wanted to see his eyes, his smile, his voice, you wanted to feel his lips again.
Happy, you left your house to go to the shop where you met the guy of your dreams. You came to shop, and saw the human skeleton you were going to buy, but the boy were going to ruin your plans. You stayed a long time in front of the human skeleton, anxious and nervous, waiting for the boy to arrive with all his joy to make you a joke. Half an hour passed and the boy still didn't arrive.
"Do you need me to help you in something, lady?"
A seller had asked you after half an hour of waiting. You shaked your head. Definitely, this guy with whom you have dreamed about weren't going to appear. After all, that was only a dream, and almost never the things you dream happen. Sadly, you walked away from the human skeleton. But before leaving the shop without buying anything, you looked for Darren everywhere. He wasn't there. Disappointed, you started to walk down the street. You had the slightest hope of really meeting the guy you've dreamed about. You were too absorbed in your thoughts until someone stumbled, spilling all the coffee this person had in his hand on your chest.
"You're an idiot! Look what you've done!"You said furious, product that you felt bad about not having met the guy, as you looked at your white shirt stained with coffee.
The person that stumbled against you came closer to you to try to remove the stain of coffee from your chest with the sleeve of his shirt. You did a step back as soon as you felt how the person touched your chest.
"What the hell are you doing? How do you dare to touch my chest? Wretch!"You said, still staring at the coffee stain until you looked up to see the person that had ruined one of your favorite t-shirts.
As soon as you looked up you got stunned. There he was, looking at you with his beautiful hazel eyes, those eyes that you've dreamed of. Darren was there with his guitar in front of you nervous, trying to remove the coffee stain on your shirt. You stayed staring at him with wide open eyes, without saying a word.
"I'm sorry, really sorry!I was distracted and I suddenly stumbled and spilled coffee on your shirt!I'm very clumsy, please forgive me. Just ... I'm just trying to remove the stain of coffee from your shirt! Holy crap, sorry, I'm very clumsy!"Darren said to you almost in supplication, looking into your eyes and nervous, not knowing what to do.
You only stared at him, surprised. You couldn't really believe that you were meeting the boy of your dreams. The boy looked down, regretful for what he had done. You started to laugh and he looked up again to look at you frowning, but this time with a slight smile.
"Don't worry, it isn't really anything serious. It's just a simple shirt. Things like this always happen, it's not the first time is spilled coffee on my shirt"You said, still laughing. This time Darren was looking at you, livelier.
"Well, now men may not take their eyes off your chest"Darren said, staring at your chest where the coffee stain was, laughing.
"Well, that's a good thing, isn't it? I'm going to hit! Do you think that they will be back to look at me, Darren?"You asked, laughing and having fun. Darren frowned.
"How do you know my name? I think I haven't yet introduced myself. Sorry, do we know each other from somewhere?" Darren asked intrigued, still frowning.
You blushed and started to stammer a few words. You had been a real idiot. You didn't know what to come up now, he wasn't going to believe that you've dreamed about him. It was very absurd and he was going to think you were completely crazy. Darren looked at you intently, still waiting for an answer. When you looked at the ground to give up, you looked at his guitar. His guitar had his name engraved. Finally you looked up again to look at him with a mysterious smile.
"Well, this is a secret. But I can read minds."You said faking a voice of mystery. Darren looked you fun, crossing his arms. "It's very easy to guess names, and more when is engraved on a guitar."
Darren got his guitar and saw his own name. Then he looked at you and started to laugh.
"I think I should be more careful with the guitar or I'm gonna start to believe that everyone has the power to read minds but me"Darren said, still laughing."It's nice to meet ... Umm, what's your name?"Darren said, stretching his hand.
"Well, you'll figure it out as soon as you get the power to read minds. You have to practice"You answered, stretching your hand to him.
As soon as you felt the touch of your hands, something odd happened. You re-felt what you felt in your dream every time you touched any part of his body. Meanwhile Darren frowned and was stunned, as if he was remembering something. Still holding hands, Darren looked at you a bit confused.
"Are you sure we don't know each other from somewhere? I have the feeling that ... at some point ..."Darren started to say, confused. You just stared at him. You were sure that he too had remembered something, as if you both had been known already. Darren finally released your hand. "I don't know why I have the need to call you Bones. It's like ... if I already know it. I think we do know each other."
"Well, that's the way one person I met once used to call me."You answered, with teary eyes when you heard Darren calling you like that."Maybe we know each other from another life"
Darren had his sight lost, as if he were trying to remember something. You closed your eyes and felt how your body began to shake. For some reason Darren knew how your name was, and you hadn't mentioned it to him either or hadn't said anything. And that was very weird, because it was only your dream. Darren started to say a few words, with his sight still lost.
"I'll always love you, although the fate separates us." Darren said almost in whisper, with his eyes wide open looking to the ground until he looked up to look into your eyes which were spilling tears.
You got pale as soon as you heard to those words that you said to Darren before his heart stopped beating as had happened in your dream. You were feeling many things at once. Your feelings were a mixture of fear, nervousness, confusion, happiness. Darren, a little unsure, placed his hands on your waist and touched your face with his nose, eyes closed. You too closed your eyes and wrapped your hands around his neck. You stayed like that for a long time, reliving everything you felt for him. What you thought was a dream probably was not, because you could feel how Darren was breathing quickly next to you, as if he knew everything that was happening. You stayed in silence, finally admitting that both of you had met already and that in your other life together both of you had loved each other to the end. You recalled all you had lived in seconds until he whispered in your ear.
"I think that we do know each other, Bones. And I think that fate reunited us to give us a second chance. I've been looking for you all this time and you finally re-appear so I can love you again like that time. This is something that goes beyond destiny."
