-Let there be midnight
Me No Own HunterxHunter
Ghostly Friends
Grim Reaper
The crickets chirped from where they were outside and a soft wind blew barely disturbing the trees and bushes. It was almost midnight and the men that surrounded the house earlier that day have left in frustration, anger, and fear towards the house. Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio knew that they could not come inside the house while the men were there so they went down to Gon's house down the street and waited on a bench swing hanging from the front tree in Gon's yard as they watched the men at the house in the corner of their eyes and Killua's pranks. Once the men were gone around sunset and Killua had disappeared from the front yard the three boys made their way into the house and to the attic to see Killua sitting by the window with his palm in his hand.
They had tried to talk to Killua for hours, but for some reason the boy would not respond and his gaze was always looking in the direction of a streetlamp two houses away. Giving up, they all either settled down on a crate or the ground waiting for Killua to finally come back. When he finally did he turned to face them right as the clock hit midnight and the streetlamp he had been looking at flickered on and off for a few seconds before the street was encased in darkness.
"Someone's been watching me." he stated in a serious voice, blue eyes barely narrowed as he looked at Gon and the others. Leorio scoffed, throwing his hands up in the air as he glared at the white haired ghost.
"Yes, and it was us! We've been trying to get your attention for hours!" he complained, annoyance threaded in his voice. Killua's eyebrow twitched in annoyance as he 'tck'ed looking back to the window and down at the darkened street.
"That's not what I'm talking about!" Killua argued loudly. "A large figure has been watching me ever since this morning. He's been following me around and everything and watches me from a distance like some type of stalker or something. He'll look right at me even when I look at him and he doesn't move until I'm out of his sight or getting close to." he tried to explain as his eyes flickered to the edge of his vision where the others were still sitting. "He didn't leave until just now when the streetlamp burned out." he added. Kurapika's eyes furrowed in slight confusion, his head tilted to the side as he tried to image why someone would follow him around all day.
"We didn't see anyone out of the ordinary." the blonde said truthfully. Killua sighed deeply, his eyes flickering back towards the street where the darkened streetlamp was, eyes narrowing when he watched it as if waiting for someone just to appear out of thin air.
"I don't think it's an 'anyone', rather 'anything'." he corrected. "It was solid black and no living person can be solid black in daylight much less not have a presence." Killua started, turning around to look at the others with a serious look. "Everything has a presence even when they're dead, but this thing does not. It's just there which is weird. Not only that it didn't just walk away, it disappeared."
"What's so weird about it disappearing? You do it all the time." Gon pointed out, his nose scrunched up in confusion as he tried to see Killua's point. The white haired ghost shook his head with a frown.
"That's not what I mean. Yes I can disappear at will and all, but I don't think this thing was ever even alive." Killua stated as he blew softly through his slightly parted lips.
"It's not alive?" Leorio asked exasperated, his eyes wide behind his small rimmed glasses. "How can he be dead if he was never even alive to begin with?" he shouted only for Kurapika to shush him so he didn't alert the neighbors to their presence. Killua glared at Leorio, standing up from the window seat. The moon made half of him in to a silhouette from where he stood in front of the window, a sharp blue eye visible and glowing like a valuable gem in the moon's presence.
"Don't think I have all the answers! I'm just about as clueless as you are! For all I know this thing is a fragment of my imagination and I'm finally going insane from all these years sitting alone in this old dusty attic!" Killua spat, his arms folding across his chest. "Contrary to belief, being a ghost doesn't make you know everything that comes with the title and all." he added. "But I do have one theory onto what that thing is; it's a strange theory though." He walked pass them and to an open box that held unknown contents to everyone but Killua.
"If it was never alive to begin with, I don't see how it can get any stranger." Kurapika replied, smiling a bit to try and lighten the mood even though he knew it was futile. Killua riffle through some of the pictures in the box until he pulled out a picture with a man masked by shadows from head to toe. The only thing that you could be able to tell from him being his height and built everything else was unknown since shadows covered him from head to toe.
"I think it could be the 'Grim Reaper' or something." Killua said before setting the picture back down. Gon tilted his head to the side, confused as his eyebrows drew together and made a small crease on his forehead.
"But doesn't the Grim Reaper handle a scythe and kills people that are about to die? You've been dead for quite some time so why would he come after you?" Gon asked. Killua shrugged as he hopped on top of a crate behind him and sat down crossed legged, his posture somewhat relaxed now.
"Like I would know. All I know is that thing looks like the Grim Reaper and that's all." he replied crossing his arms again.
"So you believe the Grim Reaper is here to take you to the afterlife?" Gon asked, eye brows furrowed together again with the small crease on his forehead.
"Something of the like. But my theory could be way out the window for all I know." Killua replied with a small nod. Kurapika sighed, eyes closing for a brief second or two before he stood up and brushed off his pants, looking at Killua.
"No matter how much this topic interests me I think it would be best if we leave since we do have school tomorrow and we can't be too tired." Kurapika said politely. "We'll try and see you tomorrow Killua, after those men are gone and get back onto this topic, and keep a close eye out for this 'Grim Reaper' and try to get more details out of him if you can." he added as Leorio stood up behind him and also brushed off his pants from the dust he collected from sitting down on the old wooden crate.
"Alright, see you tomorrow." with that Killua disappeared, the three of them not batting an eyelash at the sudden disappearance of the white haired and blue eyed boy.
Kurapika and Leorio were at the top of the attic's stairs when they noticed that Gon hadn't stood up from where he sat on the ground with his back propped up against a crate. His honey brown eyes were trained of the top of the streetlamp that was visible to him through the window, the one that Killua had trained all his attention on before.
"Gon!" Leorio shouted back towards the spiky haired boy, jarring him from his thoughts. "What are you doing? Let's go already!" he rushed with an impatient look in his eyes. Gon scratched the back of his head sheepishly as he stood up, jogging to catch up with his two other friends.
"Sorry!" he apologized with a light chuckle. "I spaced out." he added, smiling. Leorio sighed and shook his head, descending the stairs with Kurapika following in behind him.
"It's too late to start spacing out." he told him over his shoulder. Gon chuckled a little nervously.
"I know, it's just that I was thinking about something and ended up spacing out…" Leorio didn't say anything else at this and left it as it is, exiting the house and walking up the street with the two following silently in behind.
They didn't need to turn and look up at the grimy old attic window to know that Killua was once again there, sitting in his window seat with his head in his hand and peering out the dusty glass with bright blue eyes at the street with moonlight reflecting in his silvery white hair. They knew he was, because that's what he always did. He was like the guardian of the street always watching Yorknew St. with blue eyes that take in anything and everything. It was strange to think that maybe in a month or so those blue eyes wouldn't be staring out of the dusty window.
