Leaf

NEWTs were quickly approaching and all of the seventh years were feeling the pressure. Quidditch trainings had been drawn to an abrupt halt and extra-curricular activities were being replaced with extra study sessions in the library. Rose Weasley, Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy were sitting at one of the desks, textbooks covering the entire expanse. Around them, several other study groups were doing the same, comparing answers in hushed whispers and pouring over heavy books.
Scorpius sighed and leaned back in his chair, flicking his wand lazily at the ceiling and causing snow to fall from nowhere. Beside him, Albus was chewing on the end of his quill, his glasses rested crookedly on the bridge of his nose and his green eyes glazed over. Out of the three of them, Rose was the only one studying. Her bushy, red head was bent low over an Ancient Runes textbook and her blue eyes hurried scanned across the page. Some of Scorpius' snow landed on her shoulder and he reached over to brush it off, when she glared up at him venomously.
"Scorpius!" she snapped, angrily. "I swear I'll hex you into next week if you keep doing that!"
The blonde boy looked slightly taken aback by her forcefulness and gave her an easy smile. "Relax, Rose," he told her, calmly. "It's just some snow."
Rose, however, was not in the mood for being calm. "If you can't pay attention and study, then go away!" she threatened. "I can't study with you putting snow everywhere!"
Scorpius scowled and looked across at Albus, who was snoozing soundly with his cheek pressed against the wood of the desk, drool dripping out of the side of his mouth.
"Whatever, it's not like we even want to study with you, anyway!" he retorted, shoving Al in the shoulder, causing him to gasp and jump up, staring around with a startled expression.
"Wadda miss?" he asked as he adjusted his glasses.
The Slytherin boy rose angrily and turned sharply on his heel. "We're leaving," he muttered darkly as he stormed towards the exit. Albus stared after him in confusion, before turning back to Rose. She could see the fierce battle he was facing inside his head; follow his best mate or stay with his beloved cousin. Eventually, Scorpius' influence won him over. He shrugged at Rose and gave her an apologetic face, before gathering his books and following Scorpius out into the corridor.
Rose glared after their retreating figures and slumped against the desk. She felt awful. Even worse, she felt like her cousin, Lucy. At the start of the year, she had gone to Lucy for advice. Everyone knew that Lucy was the smartest of all of her cousins. She had gotten Outstandings in all of her OWLs and NEWTs, and Rose had wanted desperately to know how she had done it. Lucy's advice was simple. Study for as many hours as possible, every day, up until exams. Do not let friends and boys distract you from studies.
Rose had carried those golden words of wisdom with her for the entirety of her seventh year. She had done nothing but study. Even Quidditch, which used to bring her such enjoyment and relief, had been discarded, as she barely turned up to trainings anymore. Rose was exhausted. Her brain felt overworked and she was crabby and snarky almost all of the time. Every time she rowed with Scorp, or snapped at Al, she could feel them slowly pulling away. Her friendship with them was crumbling and there was almost nothing she could do about it.
With a heavy sigh, she closed her textbook and rubbed her temples. Perhaps Lucy, with all of her intelligence, was wrong. Perhaps there were more important things in life than getting all Outstandings. Rose was about to lose her best friends; and they were far more important to her than some silly exam. She gritted her teeth and nodded her head determinedly as she collected her books and placed them in her shoulder bag. She was going to find the boys and apologise. Taking a leaf out of Lucy's study book had been the wrong choice.
A/N: Sorry for such a late update, guys. I've been M.I.A in the fanfiction world for about 2 months. I know this chapter doesn't exactly focus on the interaction between Lucy and Rose, but their overall relationship is there.
Ages: Rose (18), Scorpius (18), Albus (17), Lucy (22)
