They're what?! Lucy fingered the end of the thin envelope absentmindedly as she stared at her young cousin standing before her. Lily's freckled face was bright and joyful, one hand holding Lucy's tightly, the other rubbing her belly. She was almost four months along now, and beginning to show underneath her clothes. The roundness looked out of place compared to the rest of her small, slim build. It took every ounce of tact that Lucy could summon to keep from staring at it.
"You'll definitely come, won't you Luce?" Lily implored excitedly. She was bouncing on her toes so much that her bright orange hair spun around her face. Lucy was too stunned for words. She couldn't grasp the concept. Somehow, she managed a weak nod, which seemed to satisfy her cousin enough for her to stop bouncing and release the tight hold on her hand.
"It's just so exciting, isn't it?"
Again, all Lucy could do was nod. Her mouth had gone completely dry, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't get her mouth to form words. Her lack of response obviously irritated Lily, and her face fell slightly as she stuck out her bottom lip.
"Well, I've got plenty more of these to deliver, so I'd better be going. You'll definitely be there, right?" The uncertainty in her voice snapped Lucy out of her shock and she gave her what she hoped, was a convincing smile.
"Of course, Lily," she muttered softly. Lily beamed and hugged her tightly.
"Thanks, Lucy! I'll catch you later!"
Lucy watched her, her mouth slightly agape, as her cousin skipped down the driveway, her orange hair whipping behind her. She stood there for several minutes, her fingers still running over the edge of the envelope she held. A few minutes passed before she eventually went inside. She placed the envelope on the table and sat down next to it, her blue eyes fixed on it as though it was a poisonous spider ready to spring at any moment.
Eventually, her curiosity got the better of her, and she took the enveloped back into her hands. With shaking fingers, she slowly opened it and unfolded the silver paper. Her eyes skimmed over the glossy blue ink. Even though she already knew what she was reading, she gave a small gasp of surprise. It was as though the written word was proof that what Lily had told her earlier that morning was true, and not some sort of horrid joke.
Wedding? She couldn't believe that Lily, her baby cousin, the youngest Weasley, was getting married in a month. Of course, she should have seen it coming. Lily was pregnant, it was only right for Lysander to propose to her after he found out. It was the proper thing to do. But Lucy thought her cousin was far too young to be getting married and having babies. She was only eighteen for Merlin's sake. Lucy hadn't even had a boyfriend, and she was 24. Yet, here was Lily, almost halfway through her pregnancy and about to get married to her high school boyfriend. She was horrified.
Part of her couldn't understand how Uncle Harry had let this happen. If Lucy was in Lily's shoes, her father would have sent her away, much like what Aunt Fleur did with Dominique when she started cutting herself. Instead, Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny seemed to accept what was unfolding around them involving their daughter.
All of Lucy's disapproval began bubbling to the surface, and she was glad that she was home by herself. Molly was at the hospital, and her mother and father were both at work. Just as Lucy was about to rip the invitation in half and discard of it, she stopped herself. No matter what she thought of the situation, Lily was obviously happy. She remembered the way her face lit up as she told her the news. Lucy needed to show some support.
With a deep sigh, Lucy pinned the invitation up on the calendar and slumped down at the dining table with a cup of tea. She couldn't understand her family, sometimes.
