Verya almost cried out in pain again, the arrow broken, but still in her side. She held in the sound, not wanting to concern the dwarves. They continued to fight back the orcs, now with the help of the elves. Verya looked around, trying to find a certain elf, when her eyes locked with a redheaded one instead. Tauriel. Verya looked away quickly, unsure of how she should feel about her. Tauriel seemed to be looking for someone too, Kili, although Kili seemed to be preoccupied with the pain as well. The pain increased for her, and soon it was too much for Very to handle, the world turning spotty. Soon it faded into nothingness, the screams of pain and death all around her.
She felt something on her shoulder, but she didn't want to move, to even breathe, the pain was really bad. But still, she opened her eyes, looking into the brown eyes she had come to love.
"Kili" She whispered with a small smile gracing her face. He returned it, but it slid into a grimace when his eyes slid down to the bloodstains on her shirt and pants.
"It;s bad Verya. We removed the arrow, but it doesn't seem to be getting better. We think it might be poison" He whispered and her heart sank. He knew now, there was no getting around it. Suddenly the ground jerked and Verya gasped when pain spiked in her side. She tried to get up, using Kili as a lever for her.
"Kili where are we?" She whispered, panic lacing her voice. The floor jerked again, only now she knew why. They were on a barge of sorts, water surrounding them. She turned, facing the rest of the dwarves. They still hadn't noticed that she was awake. With a small smile masking her pain, she limped over to them.
"Hello friends" She smiled and in a flurry of cloaks and arms, all the dwarves had surrounded her, hugging her and talking all at once.
"Verya" Fili, the last one up said, love laced in his voice. She smiled and pulled him into a gentle hug, glad that he was okay.
"We were so worried about you when you didn't wake up, although no one more worried then Kili" He winked over at the dwarf, who's face had taken on a nice shade of red. Verya laughed, but it turned into a grimace as the pain became unbearable. Fili frowned and made her sit down, just when a man stalked towards them, a frown of dislike on his face.
"We are almost at Lake Town" He started, but Verya didn't make out the rest, her vision turning blurry again. Was this the doing of the poison in her? Or was it the lack of sleep? Probably both. She saw Balin hand the man a pouch of coins and then felt hands grip her waist roughly. She gasped and the world once again turned black.
Hands shook her back into the world of consciousness. She groaned and looked around. Now she was in a room, pelts littering all the available surfaces. Across the room was the man from the boat, other than him, they were alone. Verya gasped and tried to jump up, but the man got up and held her back down.
"They went without me didn't they. To the mountain, it was just past this city was it not?" Verya whimpered, feeling alone and forgotten again. The man just stared at her. Finally he nodded and she sighed, sitting down.
"My name is Verya" She whispered and the man spared a half smile at her.
"Bard" He answered, holding out a hand to shake. Suddenly there was noise down stairs and Verya tried to get up again. Before she could, three kids came into the room. A boy and two girls. Verya sighed, feeling let down. She had hoped that maybe the others had stayed for her, but she knew how important the mission was to Thorin. She had wished Bilbo had at least stayed to make sure she was okay, even though she knew she wasn't.
Verya closed her eyes and laid back down on the makeshift bed. There was more noise, but she assumed it was just the kids leaving. Suddenly a hand was on her shoulder. Her eyes snapped open, looking straight into the blue eyes of dwarf she knew well.
"Fili! You stayed" She whispered, pulling him into a hug. He laughed and released her.
"For you and for my brother" He said, and she was up and around him in the flash of an eye, ignoring his protests and the pain in her side. She raced down the stairs and came to see him. Kili was laying on the table, pain showing clearly on his face. She gasped, the poison was acting faster for him then her, but that was probably because she was an elf and her immune system was stronger than his.
"Kili!" She yelled, running to him. He looked over, a small smile on his face. She was almost to him when someone else walked into the room. The red hair shining bright in the dark room. Verya stopped and then turned away, feeling silly with herself. Of course he chose her, Tauriel was a catch compared to her.
She turned and went to head back upstairs when she felt a hand grab her wrist.
"Kili, it's fine, I know who you choose now" She whispered, but when she turned she came face to face with her favourite elf.
"Legolas" She smiled, but saw Kili glare. She extracted herself from the elf and went back upstairs, followed by Fili. She sat back on the bed and the dwarf followed her lead.
"Uncle and the others went to the mountain. He tried to get me to follow, but how could I just leave my family" He said, looking at her. She smiled and leaned on his shoulder.
They didn't talk much, just sat together, while they heard busseling downstairs. She heard Kili's cries and she had to physically force herself to not go down and see him, he obviously wanted Tauriel there and not her. Fili went down as soon as the cries had started.
She could feel the poison working it's way through her and soon she was repressing cries of pain. She laid down on the bed again and closed her eyes, feeling tired. She knew she should try and stay awake, but she was just so tired. The darkness surrounded her for the third time, and tears slid down her face. She felt weak, a feeling she did not welcome. Most of all she felt abandoned.
