Chapter Forty-Eight: Charm

I glanced nervously from my place beside Rin to Izanami, who stood hidden not five feet from me. Rin sipped her cooling tea as she perused the room set aside for entertaining company, a sad sort of smile quirking her lips. I couldn't hope to figure out what she was thinking, but I knew the same could not be said for her. I kept a tight hold on wandering thoughts, and smiled when Rin complimented Sesshoumaru on his fine decorative taste.
I could do this.
I woulddo this.
Now was as good a time as any to begin. "So tell me, Rin-chan," I started quietly, grinning in return when she beamed at the affectionate term, "how is it that Kagutsuchi managed to capture your eye?"
Her crimson blush was expected and endearing. "Oh, well, Kagome-chan . . . I can't really say―"
I laid a comforting hand across her arm. "There is no need to be embarrassed. I often had talks of a similar nature with Chisaki before she was married to Kira. I think that it helped her overcome her fears, and so I thought maybe it could also help you."
Pink still tinged her cheeks, but Rin smiled and nodded. "I just do not know how to explain it, Kagome-chan. It's as if . . . it's as if I have no control over how I feel. From the moment I first saw Kagutsuchi-san, I have been drawn to him. He is beautiful, as all deities are beautiful, but he is so alluring, so dark in his beauty . . ."
She trailed off, and I recognized the far-away look in her eyes. I'd seen it many times in the mirror. "It's his beauty, then, that has enraptured you so?"
She hesitated. "Yes . . . and no."
I chanced another look at Izanami's hiding place even though I couldn't see her. "May I ask you a simple question, Rin-chan?"
"Of course. What do you wish to know?"
Resting my chin on folded hands, I regarded my friend seriously. "Do you love him?"
I honestly hadn't thought she'd be able to answer. Her mouth fell open in shock at my boldness, but she replied quickly and without pause. "I do."
Inwardly cheering, I abruptly stood and excused myself. "Oh, you must forgive me. I've just remembered something I must attend to. It will take no time at all."
As I walked away, I smirked.
The first task was complete.
