Chapter 19: Stand Up

Kelly lay back in the bed for a while, after the tears had dried on her cheeks. There had been an initial anger, just for the first few minutes while she cried, anger towards Sabrina mostly. Then it had been pain and in the end there was this strange emptiness of exhaustion. But right now this was slowly turning into fear. She hadn't realised that in the emotional turmoil she was in Sabrina was vulnerable to a relapse, right now.

And she had let her leave.

Damn it!

She shot to her feet and stormed outside. One of the large clocks on the wall in the hall told her she had to be elsewhere if she didn't want to blow her cover. Sabrina should be in class as well. Kelly run downstairs to the diner, trying to fool herself, to convince herself that it was just her head making up all this anxiety and there was actually no other reason to be stressed.

Kris was walking down the stairs, trying to decide how to approach the situation with Sabrina. They had been friends for some time and she had always been the same: overprotective. Kris always thought it as one of the best qualities of her but right now she was starting to doubt that. It felt like she didn't trust her at all to be working with her undercover. It made her wonder whether Sabrina actually had her back or not. When this case was over they really should have a sit down and talk.

But Kris needed to clear this up right now, since the case seemed to drag for some time. They still didn't have any solid lead, but The Aryan was a good start. Yet nobody had given her credit for that had they? Sabrina had just pulled her out and replaced her in a sense. What was she really trying to do?

Lost deep in thought she wasn't watching the people around her. She ended up bumping into one of them. She was suddenly interrupted from her thinking of a serious situation and she wasn't at all happy. She looked up to see a blond girl smiling. She did look a bit like The Aryan but it wasn't her.

''Hello there! Are u Kris, then?''

Kris looked up and flashed her best social smile. What's the point of blue eyes and perfect teeth if you don't show 'em right?

''Well, yes, and who are you?'' She smiled even more widely.

The other woman extended her hand and they exchanged a handshake. ''I'm Janice, I'm a member of the Aryan Sorority Recruiters, I have an offer to make you Kris!''

Sabrina put her hand on Hope's shoulder and kept an eye on the door. It was almost time for class and they have previous few moments left to discuss. Hope had her right arm in a splint, which meant there were probably multiple fractures, Sabrina noted.

''I need you to leak to the school that I'm a Jew.'' she said, looking over her shoulder once more.

Hope lifted her eyebrows. ''You are?''

''No, but does it matter?''

The taller girl shrugged. ''I guess not. You're not gonna tell anyone about my hand, are you?''

''We're cool. Don't worry.'' She patted her shoulder and took a step back as someone entered the room.

Sabrina rubbed her hands together, while waiting for the sociology class to start. She was feeling oddly cold, despite the heat. The first fight was tonight and she really wasn't sure she was up to it. She had to be though, because after all this case had gotten a little too personal for her.

It wasn't really her own troubles, or the sleep issues, no, even though they were factors. She had let herself get emotional with this case, let herself bond a little bit with Alice and right now she felt the need to protect her. But then, she felt the same way with Kris. She just couldn't let her go to these fights, she had been there, seen how it is. There was no specific reason, she just couldn't let Kris go. It was stubborn and looked a bit bad but she wasn't going to let her do it.

She knew though there would be some confrontation at some point, because Kris was too damn head strong sometimes to let things slide. She would keep pushing and pushing until she burst. Yep, that was Kris. Sabrina groaned and looked at the room that was now almost full. Hope tilted her head back and mouthed something at her. Sabrina frowned and Hope said something again. This time Sabrina got it. She was asking if she was okay. Which meant she was letting other people see that she wasn't. Her head felt like it was full of cotton filling.

''So then, lets start uh?'' She said out loud.

Kelly kept checking her wrist watch. It was almost time for her lunch break. When the clock pointed at twelve o' clock Kelly darted out of the diner down the hallway to find Sabrina. She knew which class she would be in but when she run upstairs she found the class empty, except from Hope, still picking up her things.

''Where is she?'' she asked out loud.

Hope realised the ''she'' was Sabrina since Kris wasn't in that class. ''She said she didn't feel to good after class, my guess is the restrooms.'' These women were either all crazy or something was very wrong. ''Is something the matter?'' She asked carefully.

''Just tell me where the restrooms are okay?!'' Kelly yelled and then lowered her voice. ''Where?'' she asked again.

Hope used her working hand to point down the corridor. ''Turn left and you'll see it.''

She hadn't finished her phrase before Kelly broke in a run.

''Well, hell, you're welcome!'' Hope muttered to herself and picked up her bad. ''Gee, thanks for helping me with my stuff!''

Kelly abruptly turned to her left and kicked open the door.

''Sabrina!'' she yelled, momentarily not worried about blowing her cover.

Sabrina was just pushing one of the last doors open when Kelly yelled and it made her jump.

''Holy- What the hell are you doing here?!'' She brought a hand up her chest. ''You almost gave me a heart attack!''

''Sorry!'' Kelly looked around and was pleased to see they were alone.

''What are you gonna do if someone finds us here together?! You crazy?'' Sabrina washed her hands in the sink.

''I'll claim emergency!''

Sabrina forgot about fighting and smiled at her. ''Okay then. So what's the problem?''

''I... I...''

''Maybe we should talk later tonight okay? Oh, darn, I forgot-''

''The tournament's tonight.'' Kelly said, closing the door so they won't be heard. ''You up for this?''

Sabrina decided to be honest. ''I'll try.''

''I'll be there.''

The taller angel turned to leave but she stopped in the opening of the door. ''Thanks Kell.''

She shut the door behind her.

Kelly washed her face in the sink, feeling new tears threaten to spill. They hadn't fought this time, it was a good sign. Maybe things were starting to go smoother, maybe they actually stood a chance. Not a chance for the tournament, but their friendship, and more importantly, their lives.

But then Kelly had a bad thought. And it made her go into the restroom booth and kick open one of the trash cans. It was empty, except from an empty syringe.
