Chapter 21: Mark
It was late and the almost full moon was visible in the clear desert sky. Sabrina kept pressing her face against the glass, wanting a cleared view. The room was empty and the air-conditioning had stopped humming. She had switched it off, right after she had put on a long sleeved hoodie. Despite the heat she was feeling cold.
When the sounds of the crowd had died she had run out and emptied her stomach halfway to the school. She had been by the window ever since she walked in her room, it was the only way she could think off to keep herself away from the contents of her closet. Kelly was smart to realise there had been one bag, but not smart enough to think there would be another.
She finally pushed herself away from the window and paced to the closet. She opened the door, then closed it, slowly. She leaned herself on the door and breather heavily. If she just gave in, there would be no reason for stress, for a while at least. There would be no pain, no headache, no fighting with Kelly. Actually, there would be no Kelly for a few hours.
Hmmm...
She opened the closet door again and looked at the low selves. She crossed her arms over her chest and swayed back and forth. She closed the door again and sat on the floor, leaning her head on the door. Dammit.
She heard a knock and looked up. Someone knocked again then stopped. ''Sabrina?'' It was Kelly's voice. She didn't reply.
''Sabrina, you in there? We need to talk.'' Kelly said again but received no answer. Sabrina parted her lips to send her away but she just wished she didn't have to talk to anyone right now. She kept quiet.
Kelly called her name one last time then she went quiet as well. Sabrina sighed. The other angel spoke again.
''Bri, I know you're in there.''
Sabrina's head was pounding. Why couldn't she just go away?! Why doesn't she get it? She needed her to go away, she couldn't do anything.
''I know you're there Sabrina.''
Sabrina launched her fist on the closet door and got up.
''God damn it Kelly what the hell do you want?!'' She yelled while opening the door. Kelly was momentarily taken aback and took a step back, putting her hands up between them.
''I can't find Kris.'' she said quietly.
Sabrina threw her hands in the air and rolled her eyes. ''Well have you checked her dorm?''
Kelly kept her answers simple, because ''Doh, are you an idiot? Of course its the first place I checked'' didn't sound as a good answer at the moment. ''Yes.''
''Have you asked around?''
''You think it's natural for the diner waitress to ask around?'' She took another step back.
Sabrina made an unhappy face and grabbed her keys. ''I'm gonna go look for her. Go downstairs and try not to raise suspicions.''
Kelly frowned. ''What, are you implying that-''
''You know me better. I'm not gonna sit here and play implying games with you while Kris is AWOL. We can have a boxing match when she's safely in her dorm.'' Without waiting for an answer she left the floor.
Kris had been given a dark brown ritualistic cloak, while everyone else was in black. She had been led in the desert by two women, blindfolded. When they took the blindfold off they were somewhere in the desert, inside a cave. It was completely dark, until she walked deeper in the cave and a person in black cloak and a goat mask held up a torch. The flame casted surreal shadows in the curves and edges of the rocky cave.
''Follow me.'' The person behind the mask whispered hoarsely. The mask didn't give out their identity. Kris had no idea if it was a man or a woman she was following but she knew one thing. She surely had bad experience with... brown cloaks. Almost a year ago she had been abducted by a man who had tried create some sort of new religion and she had been forced to wear a ritualistic cloak, the same shade of brown as this. Darn, did they have no sense of fashion these people? Brown made her look bad... she looked at least ten pounds heavier with brown clothes on and this cloak wasn't exactly the latest- Oh dear!
She had just taken a turn and had reached an open space where a fire burned in every corner. There had to be some sort of air route Kris thought, otherwise the smoke would have filled the room. Temperature had dropped during the night and the fires kept the cave in a comfortable warmth. There was a large, smooth rock in the middle of the room, about two feet tall, three wide and eight long. And the worst part was, someone seemed to be tied on that rock. Kris stopped in her tracks.
''Wha-...What is this?'' she stuttered.
The person with the mask spoke. ''This is the final test to become one of us. We have lately been informed that one of the new professors is a...Jew.'' she spat the last word out and it echoed through the mouths of the almost twenty cloaked women in the cave. Each of them had a shiny double edged knife on the rope that tied their cloak. The masked person lifted a box in her -Kris decided- hands.
''Mark her, and you're one of us. Mark her and she is part of our property.'' She opened the box and offered her the knife inside. ''Are you ready Kris?''
Ugh. Kris gently lifted the knife and looked down. She recognised Sabrina's inert figure on the rock. Well, this was about to get real messy.
