Chapter 29: The New World
The minute she entered the closed up cage where the fight would be held she knew this was going to end badly. The Aryan had her hair shorter than the last time, pale blue eyes barely acknowledging Kris as she stood passive, waiting for the fight to start. When the bell rang her eyes seemed more passive than ever, as if she had slipped into some kind of trance while she prepared herself to fight. Kris had see the other two angels exercise quite often, she had seen Sabrina's brown eyes light up in the fight's excitement and seen Kelly's green shine with expectation while she carefully calculated her next move. She had never seen someone fight with eyes passive like this. It was unnerving, as if the woman next to her wasn't completely there, maybe even not completely sane.
She took a step backwards. Letting her dictate distance seemed a better option than trying to step inside her guard. She had seen her fight. She broke Hope's hand without a heartbeat's hesitation. She wasn't big or bulky but she seemed to have something off about her. Turns out the cult didn't know anything about her either so Kris couldn't know what to expect. The first punch took her by surprise, connecting with her torso but she was able to deflect the second.
Kris didn't have the time to set an attack on her own so she ended up pinned in the corner of the closed cage, deflecting most but not all the blows coming her way in an unbelievable speed. Lucky for her she didn't have to win the match to grab the Aryan for a chat afterwards. One particular jab connected with a weak spot one the fifth left rib and she was sure that this time she felt it crack, because searing pain ran through her body. She slowly lowered herself on the floor and the Aryan took a step back.
In the right side of the room Sabrina was leaning on the wall, next to Kelly and watching the fight, distancing herself as much as possible from the rest of the fans. She winced when she saw that particular blow land and knew that it was a crushing one. She watched Kris sink to the floor and her eyes widened as the Aryan stepped back. She shifted her feet on the ground Sabrina knew what move she would be performing next, just by following her gaze to Kris. The angel was bend over on the cage floor, leaving the back of her neck and head completely exposed. The brunette knew what a blow of this force could do in this spot.
Kelly didn't manage to grab Sabrina as she sprinted towards the cage without giving her an explanation. She violently pushed through the crowd, just as the Aryan lifted her leg impossibly high, displaying amazing flexibility. She swung it downwards the base of Kris' neck, performing an axe kick, the minute Sabrina kicked open the cage door. She had barely enough time to run to the Aryan's side and jump on her, her momentum forcing both of them on the ground.
''You bitch, you were going to kill her!'' She yelled at the blond as the crowd broke into a frenzy of yelling.
The blond said something but it was drowned in the sound of a machine gun opening fire and shortly after Sabrina slipped into darkness as a fist connected with her face.
When she woke she couldn't know how much time had passed. Could be hours or barely minutes. She was in a dark and very cold space which meant it was night-time because only then the temperature drops in Death Valley.
''Ow...'' she muttered.
A voice answered, slightly on her left.
''Are you okay Bri?'' Kris' sounded strangely fragile.
Sabrina realised just now that she was on some sort of floor, leaning back on a wall. ''Where are we?''
Kris paused slightly then spoke again. ''I have no idea.''
Sabrina tried to push herself into a more upright sitting position. Then she recalled the gunshots. ''What the hell happened?''
There were a few sounds as Kris moved her body closer to her friend and colleague. ''It was a bloodbath.''
Sabrina breathed heavily and closed the distance between them. ''Kelly?'' She closed her eyes waiting for the answer.
The blond angel gasped as Sabrina accidentally bumped on her ribcage. ''I... don't know.''
The taller woman went quiet and reached for Kris. ''Show me where you're hurt.'' She gave Kris her hand and the blond guided her fingers to her ribs, allowing her to see if anything was broken. She knew Sabrina had some limited medical knowledge and she was in too much pain at the moment to refuse any help she could get. Sabrina gently traced over the ribs, knowing that there would surely be a large dark bruise right over where the fifth rib had cracked.
''Shit...'' She withdrew her hand.
''What is it?''
''It's broken. Can you breathe?''
Kris shifted uncomfortably. ''It's harder than usual but not impossible, why?''
''It could be pushing against your lung.'' She softly pushed Kris' s shoulder. ''Lie down on your back, it will help with the pain.'' She helped her on the floor and knelt next to her. ''Now tell me what happened.''
''The Aryan, she's the goat woman... the one with the mask... ow..'' She reached for her ribs and took a few deep breaths. ''She and her cult... along with a group of men ... they said they want to start a war...''
It was Sabrina's turn to gasp, but not in pain. She couldn't see Kris' face in the darkness but she was sure the angel wasn't joking. ''What... do you mean?''
''They have closed all exits from the town... they opened fire in the club basement... there was... blood everywhere... I... oh my God Bri... I don't know if Kelly is alright... and I...'' Kris' voice faded and she bit her lip, trying to snap out of this shock but she just wasn't able to.
''Why...'' Sabrina finally managed to say, ''Why... are the keeping us here?''
''They know we are here undercover, they think we're FBI.''
''Feds?''
''Yes... and they know we are working with someone else... they are afraid the third of us will contact the Bureau...they want us to tell them who it is.'' She cleared her throat. ''So they can... 'eliminate the last threat to the New World'...''
