Chapter thirty: Despair
The abrupt opening of the metal door caused a painfully screeching sound that made both angels jump. The light coming from the opening prevented them from making out more details about the dark figure that entered. Kris recognised the voice from the goat-woman but Sabrina had never heard the Aryan speak before. The woman grabbed a handful of Sabrina's shirt and pulled her to her feet.
''Du hast ein schlecht mädchen gewesen und du..'' Kris remained on the floor and shivered as the Aryan spoke to her this time. ''... du hast uns verraten.'' She spat the word at her but Kris couldn't know what they meant. She had thought the goat woman spoke funny and now she realised she didn't know much English. Sabrina tried to push her away but she pulled a pistol with her other hand and pointed it at Kris.
''Nicht bewegen, weil ich sie erschießen werden .''
Kris groaned and finally managed to get up. ''What's she saying?''
Sabrina put a hand on the wall behind her, trying to maintain her balance and looked up to the Aryan's eyes. ''She says she'll shoot you if I move.''
''So you do know the language.'' The Aryan said, leaning over Sabrina, her english accent heavy but clear.
''Yes.'' Sabrina squared her shoulders. ''Don't try to intimidate me with your height. I do it all the time to other people to fall for the same trick.''
The blond woman pushed her against the wall. ''It's time to start talking schmutzig Jüdin. Where's this third agent hiding? Who is he or she?''
Sabrina smiled widely. ''Fick dich schätzchen, eh?''
Kris had no clue about the German language but it wasn't hard to guess what Sabrina had said because it immediately earned her a blow with the pistol's butt straight in the face. Yet, she kept her balance and continued grinning. As Kris knew from past situations, Sabrina dealt with stress using sarcasm, so she was pretty much sure the blow hadn't really taken the edge of it.
''Grässlich!''
''Nah, you're the disgusting one. Anything else I can do for you sweetheart?''
The Aryan's eyes lit up and she grabbed Sabrina's throat with her free hand. ''Du bist ein Heroinsucher. Ich weiss. Sie werden mich betteln.'' She withdrew her hand. ''Sie werden mir alles sagen!''
''Bri what's she saying?''
Sabrina kept quiet and the Aryan answered for her. ''She's the liability of your team, Kris. She'll talk to me, sooner or later.''
She snapped her fingers and two men carried a small table, a bag and two stools in the room. They placed them in the middle and one of them stayed inside, holding a rifle pointed at Kris.
''Hans, wenn es notwendig ist, sie töten.''
Well, Kris didn't need to know German to get this line either. It's kind of speaks for itself when someone holds a gun to your head.
Aryan pushed Sabrina on one of the stools and sat on the opposite side of the table.
Another woman came in the room, dressed in the ritual cloak and sat by the angels side. The Aryan reached for the bag and opened it, taking a small sledge hammer outside and placing it on the table.
''It was your choice to do this the hard way. '' She leaned over the table. ''When we're done you will be in so much pain you're going to beg me for just one small injection.'' She whispered in Sabrina's ear.''
On the other side of the room Kris had lowered herself on the ground once more and was trying to see what were Sabrina and the Aryan doing, but her guard was in the way and she didn't dare to move. It seemed like her was interested in seeing as well though, so he took a step side-ways and Kris could see clearly now.
The small woman that came last was firmly holding Sabrina's right hand flat on the table. When Kris saw the hammer swing it was too late for her to react. The guard held her back, pushing the tip of his rifle against her chest, hard enough to leave a bruise. Sabrina's surprised scream echoed around the walls.
''Tell me who your partner is!''
''The boureau will send for us!'' Sabrina yelled back, more in pain than anger. She knew that as long as the Aryan feared someone might call the boureau they were needed and she would keep them alive. Maybe barely, but still. Otherwise she'd shoot them on the spot. Well maybe not Kris. They'd probably try recruit her first.
''Okay, what's next? Medieval torture ?!'' Sabrina groaned in the darkness.
''How do you feel?'' Kris' soft voice came from her left.
''Can we start from the places I don't feel?''
''What do you mean?''
''Don't feel anything below my right knee... I'm kind of unsure if it's still there...'' She paused as she felt Kris reach for her. ''AAAH!'' She pulled herself away. ''Don't touch it!''
''Sorry!'' Kris moved closer and kept her hands to herself. ''Do you think Kelly is... dead?'' She whispered.
''No, I don't.'' She reached for Kris with her good hand. ''She might be hurt though, and definitely scared our of her mind. We need to get to her before the psycho-bitch does. She's probably going to try get you to play for Aryan team.''
Kris crossed her arms over her chest, pushing Sabrina's hand away. ''Not gonna happen.''
The taller angel frowned and reached for Kris' shoulder once more. ''Listen to me. You're blond and pretty. The Aryan needs your skills and training. If you convince her you're leaving the Bureau and doing whatever they want you to do, you might get out of here alive. You might even be able to get to Kelly.'' There was no other way out for them, not when the whole valley was a war-zone.
''What if we tell her we're just private investigators on a completely different matter than this? She might understand... let us go?''
''Sure, she was very understanding while she broke my phalanges one by one.'' Sabrina allowed hostile sarcasm to colour her voice, even though she knew it wasn't Kris' fault. None of this was. ''I'm sorry.'' She finally sighed. ''She doesn't have anything against you Kris... you can get out of here... okay? Find Kelly... get the damn cavalry here if you need... and come get me... alright?''
Kelly heard the machine gun go off but as she turned to face the shooter she saw Hope coming her way. The tall woman grabbed Kelly's head and slammed it on the wall. She fell, as bullets sprayed the walls above her and everything faded to black.
When she opened her eyes everything had gone quiet. Not a single breath disrupted the silence, something very very wrong since Kelly was surrounded by people lying on the ground. She tried reaching for a few of them, trying to find a pulse but after the first five she realised they were all dead. What in the world had happened in there?
Finally a small moan cut through the air and the angel turned her head immediately to find the source. Hope was leaning on a wall, trying to stay upright, while a dark crimson stain spread on the front of her shirt. Kelly's open mouth held a question that didn't need to be voiced to become understood.
Hope breathed heavily. ''They declared war... there are people with swastikas all over the town...they're...'' She almost fell but the other woman closed the distance and helped her stand.
The words couldn't quite register. All this sounded like a grotesque joke. Kelly only managed to utter the first question that came to mind. ''Why did you hit me?!''
''Had to make you look dead or they'd kill you. I saw them coming just before they shooting started.'' Hope looked down at Kelly and grabbed her shoulder in a painful clench. ''I need you... I need your help to find Alice.'' Her eyes looked feverish as she scanned the room once more. ''Everyone in here is dead but us. They have already marked her, there's no telling what they'll do to her now. Or your two detective friends.''
