Chapter thirty one: Doubt
It has been two hours since they took Sabrina out of their holding cell, Kris notes, casting a brief glance at the shiny hands of the watch Sabrina left with her. It was more like a man's watch, she had unkindly noted when she had first noticed it on Sabrina's wrist. The brunette had answered with a sarcastic remark but Kris seemed unable to remember what it was. Frankly, she didn't care right now. The watch felt like Sabrina, even smelled like her perfume. In the cold of the night it was the only thing reminding her of who she was, helping her reassure her grasp with reality.
Often, from the other side of the wall she would hear the sharp sound of a taser then someone grunt. She thought it could be Sabrina but it wasn't sure. Someone was yelling something in German but she couldn't know what it meant. The Aryan had tried the taser on her as well and Kris had screamed, cursed and dug her nails into her palms as the shocks ran through her but she had not spoken a single word that would lead them to Kelly. The Aryan had been furious but hadn't hurt her in any other way like she had done to Sabrina. She did want her intact physically for the organization, after all, Kris thought.
If she couldn't cause her any permanent physical damage, then she would try break her mentally, psychologically. Break her down by causing Sabrina pain, this was one possibility, but what else was she doing to her outside the room? She had no problem to take her sweet time breaking her friend's right hand right in front of her, why spare her from watching now?
Time went by and Kris kept the watch clutched tight in her left hand, as she lay down on the floor on her back. Her hand was resting on her chest, the tiny ticks of the watch vibrating against her body, mirroring the sound of her heartbeat, quietly counting the seconds. Finally Kris heard footsteps. The door cracked open and a disoriented Sabrina was pushed inside. She slid down on the floor with her back against the wall. The Aryan walked in the room herself and crouched in front of Kris.
''Your friend here gets surprisingly cooperative when you show her a needle, did you know that?'' She grinned widely and her eyes sparked in the semi-darkness. Planting the seed of doubt between them, she got to her feet and walked to the door, turning her head to give Kris a final almost good natured smile before she shut it. Some kind of opening on the door shed a small light into the room, enough for Kris to make out where Sabrina was. She crawled to her side, not quite wanting to get up just yet, and knelt facing her.
Sabrina's eyes wouldn't focus on hers. The pupils, instead of dilating as they would ordinarily do in a dark room like this, had shrunk incredibly to the size of two tiny dots. Perspiration was starting to roll down her face and Kris watched in horror. Sabrina seemed to be in a ''trip'' and it didn't seem like a good one, judging from the tiny twitches of her face now and then. Kris instinctively put her hand over her mouth.
''Sabrina...'' She bit her lip and her face betrayed the extreme feelings running through her body. ''What did you tell her?!'' The first emotion that became clear from the jumble of confusion was anger. Had the Aryan offered Sabrina a dose in exchange of Kelly's name? And had Sabrina agreed?!
''Sabrina!'' She tried again, but the other angel just leaned her head back on the wall, her arms limp on the floor. For a few seconds Kris lost it completely and slapped Sabrina across the face. ''Answer me dammit! What did you tell them?!'' Sabrina's head followed the motion and turned to the side, her eyes closing. She coughed and there was a slight movement on the floor, where her hands where, as if she was fidgeting.
''What did you tell them?!'' Kris yelled once more. Then paused, because she heard the other woman making a small sound, as if trying to speak. Sabrina muttered something incoherent and her eyes slowly opened.
''Did you tell them about Kelly... Bri?'' Kris said softly this time.
Sabrina barely shook her head. ''Didn't tell them nothing...'' she muttered and her eyes closed once more. ''Didn't tell them... nothing.'' She repeated, before falling into a deep sleep-like state.
Kelly held the large towel over Hopes shoulder, where three bullets of the machine gun spray had gone through. At least they didn't have to worry about bullets lodged inside, Kelly thought, as she counted the entry and exit wounds to be sure nothing was left in. If there was anything inside it would only be small shards. The injury wasn't life threatening but as she kept the towel against her crimson blossomed once more. The injury might not be life threatening but if she kept bleeding like this she would soon go into shock. She'd rather keep this to herself for now though. Only thing positive was that Hope, being a rather imposing six feet five had more blood in her, since even though she was rather thin she was significantly heavier and more muscular than any of the angels.
Speaking of the other two, Kris was glad she hadn't found any blood inside the cage where the fight took place and she was hopeful that none of her friends were hurt, or even worse ... dead. They weren't in the room where the shooting took place so the Aryan must have took them with her. If they wanted to kill them they would have done it right there, which meant they needed something from them and until they got it they would keep them alive. Maybe barely, but alive.
If Kris didn't realise that then Sabrina certainly would and she could be a real pain in the... well, rear end, when you wanted something from her that she didn't want to give. She had faith that the other two could handle themselves and keep each other alive until she got to them. If... she got to them. What was she going to do? Desperation hit her full force. The school seemed empty. There were dead bodies in the corridor and the front yard and none of the teachers or the head were there. She had gone over every inch of the place with Hope and they hadn't found Alice's body, or any of the angels. Here's another positive.
Who was she kidding? How was this a positive? Well... she would take what she could get right now. She gave Hope a small nod and withdrew the towel, to apply the makeshift bandages from a torn shirt. Darkness had fallen and the power was out. There was no electricity, which meant no phone, no heating or air conditioning and no light. Gathering scraps of paper Kelly started a small fire in a metal bucket, offering them some light and warmth through the night. They had taken cover from the extreme desert cold in the east side dorm hall, where they made some tea, trying to heat it over the fire. At least there were no bodies in this part of the school. Small wonders...
Hope needed to rest, let the night pass, Kelly realised. The taller woman seemed to pass out as soon as Kelly announced she would take the first watch and wake her after three hours. Kelly's backup weapon rested on her lap as she slept on the couch. Kelly checked her own revolver once more to make sure it was full, with an additional round in the chamber , ready to fire. She had insisted they return to their dorm first and take her weapons as well as a box of ammo, along with a change of clothes in a light duffel bag and some medical supplies she managed to gather from the bathroom. Hope might have been the macho of the two but Kelly almost laughed as she squealed when she poured alcohol over her shoulder. She could never had imagined she would ever find herself in a situation like this, especially with Hope.
Well, I've seen it all, she thought. If there's a zombie apocalypse waiting to happen as well, bring it on! She sighed, trying to find humour in her own desperation but only thing she found was tears rolling down her cheeks as the realisation of the dozens of lives lost in just a few hours hit her. Would the face of the next dead body she turned over belong to Kris? Would the next pair of dead eyes staring at her when she entered a room be Sabrina's? Tomorrow, with Hope, she would go outside the school and search the surrounding houses. Someone has to be alive, someone... just... has to know... where her friends are. Someone just... has to.
