Chapter thirty two: Double-Edged Decisions
Almost another two hours had passed and Sabrina remained unresponsive. Only when the second hour flew away Kris heard her clear her throat. It was a characteristic sound Sabrina did and to Kris it meant that her friend was in some way returning. She hadn't kept close to her for the whole time, her mixed emotions stopping her. Now, she slowly moved to where Sabrina was and crouched next to her.
''How do you feel?''
The reply was weary and empty but Sabrina was there. ''I don't know.''
Kris had wanted to ask this from the time she had learned about Sabrina's addiction but never quite found the courage to. Now, in this dark damned place, where they had no idea if they were ever getting out tact seemed unimportant and shyness meaningless. ''How... how did that feel?''
Sabrina shook her head. ''You don't want to know.''
''Is the feeling different now that you're more... awake?''
''Like...'' The brunette struggled, trying to find the right words to describe her feelings. '' Like.. being in a crashing elevator.'' She pushed her hands against the floor, trying to find a more comfortable way to sit. ''In fact, it feels exactly like crashing on something... falling endlessly and then suddenly crushing.''
Kris was taken aback. She had not been waiting for an honest answer. Gaining more courage by that she asked her next question. '' What happened after the day Arthur Croyden injected you?''
''I went to the hospital, they did a tox screen. Yet after they found the drugs in my system they gave me morphine. And then put me into group therapy to see how it had affected me. ''
''And then?''
''Someone slipped another dose in my IV drip. The following days I was feeling sick so I had to get admitted back to the hospital.''
Kris reached out for her but the taller woman pulled away. The blond looked confused. ''You didn't know?''
''No.''
''And what happened next?''
''They kept adding doses inside my IV drip. I didn't know the sickness I was feeling was the hangover after the drug wore off and then the withdrawal symptoms.'' She held her right hand protectively on her lap, as the pain returned. ''Then he told me... and I left the hospital thinking... I was strong enough to fight off the withdrawal on my own.'' She finally turned to face Kris. ''I wasn't. He hunted me down, offering more. I guess I was... tired...no, exhausted. I gave in.'' She closed her eyes as if to ward off a painful memory. ''I'm sorry Kris.'' She finally allowed the other angel to put her hand over her shoulder.
They kept quiet for a few long minutes. Kris felt that if she didn't say anything now Sabrina wouldn't speak any more. She needed her there, and she needed not only a cellmate but her friend. Yet before she could utter a word she was interupted.
''I'm sorry...for not being here.'' Sabrina quietly repeated. ''I'm sorry for... missing so much time... from both of your lives. I'm sorry... for not being a very trust worthy person to be around... for quite a while. I... don't know if I can ... if I can handle what the Aryan is doing to me Kris. I'm... I'm not going to tell her about Kelly but ...I don't know... if the next time she gives me a shot... If I'll be able to help you get out of here. ''
Seeing that Kris had now gone quiet she continued. ''I don't ... know how I can get a grasp of things to be honest, even if we get out of her. I don't know if I can go through the withdrawal again if we make it. I... want to find a way to ask you... to shoot me if we make it out... but I can't ... I can't put this burden on you... I don't even know.. how... what...'' Her voice broke and she stopped. She shrugged quietly, as Kris pulled her into an embrace, being careful not to hurt her friend's hand more or her own ribs. ''I feel I'm losing myself...I don't know... how I can do this... again.'' She finally muttered.
Kris shuddered at the things that came out of Sabrina's mouth. ''We will be here this time.'' She said. ''We will be here... with you... for you... and we will do this together. Okay?''
''O...kay.'' She managed half heartedly. ''Okay.''
She was about to try a small smile for Kris when the door cracked open and a person was forcefully pushed in. It took a while for them to register in the bright light but they soon where able to see and manage to get on their feet. Sabrina quickly realised the person in the room was a familiar one.
''Alice!''
The woman still standing the middle of the room seemed disoriented. She suddenly swayed back and forth and Sabrina barely managed to grab her with her good hand and lower her on the floor slowly or she would crash.
''Ach, sehr rührend! I was hoping for this kind of reaction!'' The Aryan suddenly towered over them, holding a pistol. ''So you do know each other!'' She smiled widely and that small glimmer of wicked pleasure took over her eyes. ''Du musst entscheiden Sabrina!''
Sabrina shot a quick look at Kris, who was trying to hide further into the shadows of the small space, trying to put more distance between her and the Aryan. Blood was seeping out of some wound on Alice's body and both of Sabrina's hands her getting completely covered in it. The Aryan seeked eye contact again and Sabrina fixated her eyes on her.
''What have you done to her?'' she asked in a very calm, but low voice, they one she used when she was absolutely furious.
''Oh, I might have gotten carried away while questioning her, things happen right?'' She laughed shortly and pointed the pistol at Sabrina, more as part of a gesture than an immediate threat to her. She leaned towards her. ''Sag mir über dein Freund , sonst werde ich sie erschießen.'' She said, in German this time, not wanting to betray the context of the conversation to Kris. She mattered to them, after all and once they found the undercover agent they would give her the option of joining them. She looked sensible enough to keep her life and accept. ''Du musst entscheiden!''
Sabrina though, she understood perfectly what was being asked of her right now. More blood coated her hands and clothes and in the horror of it she found it disturbingly odd to see her own shattered hand dripping with someone else's blood. As she stood silent Alice's hands reached for her, in a desperate attempt to hold onto something, grabbing a strong hold of Sabrina's shirt, as if it was her precious life line.
''Help me...'' She uttered, making a soft sound like choking. ''Help... me...'' More gurgling noises confirmed that her lung was punctured.
''Ich kann sie hilfe, Sabrina. Ich kann ihre leben zu retten.'' She tilted her head to the side.
''What's it gonna be?''
Sabrina looked into Alice's dark eyes, unable to focus but still trying to find a familiar face over her, unable to breathe but still struggling for a breath, still struggling for someone to hold onto, having Sabrina in such a tight hold it almost constricted her breathing and something inside her broke.
''I can keep her alive!'' The Aryan shouted this time, her face heating up with excitement. ''Her life is in your hands! Decide! Tell me! Who is the other agent?! ''
Finally, the angel looked up, tears streaming down her face.''I can't!'' She lowered her face to the ground, protectively over the smaller woman.
A single gunshot echoed in the room. Alice's body jumped violently in her arms and then went limp. Sabrina heard the door slam shut and sobs wrecked through her body, as she held Alice and mourned.
