Chapter thirty eight

Sabrina's hand clenched to a fist as she kept her back against the wall while Kris threw up again. She knew that if the stuff the Aryan had given Kris was good this wouldn't have happened but then she would be in danger of getting addicted, like Sabrina had. No, this was a definitely bad trip, caused by low quality and other additives in the PCP. Good thing.

She waited until Kris was finished then opened the door and stood under it.

''Let's get you to lie down a bit okay?''

Kris nodded, afraid to speak, case she got sick again. Instead she let Sabrina lead her to a couch where she lay down, with her eyes shut. The other two women had drawn the curtains of every window in the house, so they wouldn't be seen from the outside.

Hope was sitting cross legged on the floor, struggling to use her cracked hand to reconnect the phone. Sabrina shot a quick look at Kris who seemed too exhausted to be awake and then knelt next to Hope.

''What are you doing?''

''The line's cut. I'm trying to reconnect it.'' She growled as the chord slipped from her hand again. Sabrina looked down. ''The jack is smashed. It won't work. Where's Kelly?''

''She's in the kitchen.'' Hope sighed and tossed away the wires. ''She's trying to get us something to eat and find some candles. The Aryan bitch has cut down the power all around the town.''

''They must have a generator where they kept us because they had light there.''

''Probably.''

Sabrina nodded and got up once more, her body feeling exhausted and sick but her mind racing. She searched for Kelly and found her runmaging through cupboards of canned goods and plates.

''Kell?''

Kelly didn't turn but stopped what she was doing. ''What.''

''You okay?'' Sabrina leaned back against the wall with her shoulder. It was less tiring to stand up this way.

''No.'' Kelly set down the can of carrots she was holding and crossed her arms on her chest protectively. Sabrina approached her and put her hands on her friend's shoulders, her right hand awkwardly struggling to close. It seemed useless to ask her why she wasn't okay.

''Kelly...''

It was like simply calling her name sparked a chain of reactions and Kelly couldn't keep it together anymore. She was too tired and scared and needed to scream.

''We took a dead man out of his home Bri...'' She managed to utter. ''We... took him out of his home... and we are using it... and this is so... so wrong!'' She finally turned to look up at Sabrina and take in the look of her friend, but so unlike her friend at the same time. Her eyes were red and tired and God she was so pale and there Kelly was, complaining about the immorality of doing what they had to survive.

''I'm sorry Kelly.'' Sabrina said, and gave up trying to stay upright. She eased down on a chair and put a hand on her face. ''I'm sorry.''

''The phone won't work.'' Hope announced, passing through the door and taking a can in her palm. She slowly opened it, looking at the two women. ''What are we going to do?''

Kelly looked away from them, suddenly swallowed by embrassment. Sabrina quickly composed herself. ''We need to get out of here.''

''Does the car you drove here have enough gas to get us out of the town, into the nearest county?''

''Maybe halfway. Yours?''

''Dry.''

''Damn.''

Hope attempted to fish some vegetables from the can. ''Okay so we'll walk the rest.''

Sabrina turned her head to Kelly. ''It's the best we can do. We cant afford to be walking around town looking for gas. ''

Kelly accepted the can Hope offered her and stirred the contents. ''We have little time before nightfall.''

''I suggest we leave around midnight, the darkness will cover us better.'' Sabrina offered. ''We have about 100 miles to cover and we will be able to cover most of the distance with the car, walks maybe arounf fifty.''

''We have about five hours until midnight.'' Hope stated.

''I seriously need to get some sleep.'' Sabrina muttered. ''So do you guys.''

Kelly nodded. ''I'll keep watch.''

''Sabrina we are lost.''

''No we are not!''

''My God Bri yes we are!''

The car grunted and came to an abrupt halt. ''We're out.'' Sabrina grimly announced and got out.

''We're in the middle of the fucking desert'' Kelly howled at her.

''Well gee I didn't notice Kelly, thanks for letting me know.'' She answered humourlessly.

''Oh, yeh, great Bri be a smart ass, that will solve things!''

''Hey it's not like we could go around and look for a map miss! How am I supposed to know where we are going?!''

Kelly took a step closer and pointed at Sabrina's chest. ''Then why the hell did you offer to drive godamn it?!''

Sabrina opened her arms. ''Hope cant and you looked like you were going to fall asleep on the wheel and kill us all!''

''And now you can kill us yourself, getting us lost in the desert! Did you hit your head and forgot how to drive or something?!''

Sabrina parted her lips to say something in return but Hope stopped them.

''Okay, CUT IT OUT you two!'' Hope growled at them. ''Its bad enough we're lost, stop the bickering!''

''Tch.'' Sabrina grabbed her backpack and started walking west, towards where she hopped the highway would be.

Kelly rushed behind her, the pale moon hanging above them mingling the details of the desert around them. It was actually windy. ''Sabrina!'' But her voice was drowned by the barking of machineguns.
