Chapter 12: The Legacy That Was Fated

Revenge is a bitch.

My name is Missariene Marol and I am a witch. I live in the world of magic, where even the schools are far from non-magical human knowledge. Though, there is one secret that even my friends don't know, my life's most important secret, Aaroline. Aaroline Xav, my mother's sister, my aunt.

Years ago, my mom was pregnant with me. A very well-known fortune-teller came to my parents to give them her regards. As soon as she came in our house, she had a vision. "Your daughter shall be the ruin of your sister, as her evil deeds will catch your daughter's eye." Aaroline caught news of this prophecy and tried to hunt me down. Before she could, my parents killed her before shortly after dying themselves because of her. While Aaroline's life was leaving her, a curse was cast upon me. "When I die, I shall share Missariene's body with her soul!"

November 4, 2018 (Present)-

11 years have passed and somehow Aaroline has escaped my body. She is roaming around freely and no one can stop her. As far as I know, that means we're dead.

August 18, 2013-

I opened my eyes as if I just woke up from a deep sleep. It was chaos. Six kids in my orphanage were on the ground, crying. They were hurt.

"Are you okay?"

"Don't hurt us! Get away!" The kids winced away from me, as if their lives depended on it.

"Little poor things, TSK TSK TSK." The menacing voice echoed in my head, the voice of my dead aunt.

She hurt them, she hurt my friends. It's not my fault, it's not.

The Present-

"What are we going to do?" I panted. "Now that Aaroline is gone, she can do anything!"

"Rain, relax. You should be glad she's gone, you've finally escaped hell." thought Fern.

"Fern, you don't understand! She is my nightmare. Who knows what she'll do!" I stated. I started having delusions of all the ways how Aaroline could hurt, even kill, my friends. I started shaking, but then I felt someone's arms embrace me.

"Calm down, she won't be able to do a thing," soothed Zain, "besides, we can protect ourselves, we'll all be fine."

God, this isn't the time to blush. I thought. But Zain is right, calm down. Everything will be fine, everything will be just fine.

(11:27 pm)-

-Eastern Common Room (Hogwarts)-

"Where is she?" I asked Zain. Fern went to the washroom twenty minutes ago, and she has yet to come back.

"Don't freak out, it's nothing bad. I'll go ask the boys in my dorm to help find her. Rain, you and Mionly go get the girls, and get back here. We'll make a plan to find her." I barely nodded before dashing to the girls' dormitory. Three minutes later, almost the entire school population was present at the common room, in pyjamas.

"Okay, break up in groups of five. Each group will search in a different place. In order from group one, you will search in the athletic room, the major and minor gymnasiums, the courtyard, the south common room, the classrooms within the east tower, as well as within the west, south, and north towers, the main corridors, the male and female washrooms, the boys' dorm, and the girls' dorm of No House. The teachers will search the remaining places and as well as supervise the whole search. You may begin the search whenever your group is ready. And please inform a teacher immediately when you have found Ms. Fern Risebeck." Instructed the Head of No House, Mr. Liegens Donan, he is in charge of the campus and dorms at night. At the name of Fern, everyone dispersed to different directions of the academy. My group was in charge of the main corridors.

I was running down the halls, somewhere within the east wing, with my wand glowing like a flashlight (a spell) until suddenly I felt a strong stinging flame upon my spine. Frozen, I slowly looked behind me and found nothing. Then I realized I was standing right in front of the dining hall.

"Hey, have you ever gone into the staff washroom in the dining hall?"

"No, and you shouldn't either, Fern."

"No way am I listening to you, seriously, this one time I went, got addicted to it. It is clean so there is no way you're making me listen to your 'good girl' talk." She giggled.

I sprinted through the doors and into the staff washroom. Panting hard, I looked into all the stalls. "Fern? Fern!" I suddenly heard a noise and froze immediately. Soft whimpers echoed through the dark room. I slowly opened the door of a stall of which the noise seemed to come from. The whimpers silenced. There was no one in the stall. When I was about to leave, I noticed something written on the cold mirror. "Rain… Run…" SWISH, SWISH. I turned around. "Holy Shit!" There behind me, were two bloody feet swinging by rope attached to the ceiling. What made it more disturbing was the way the feet were swinging, as if they were running. I can't remember anything after that, because everything went black. I just remember one thought from at the time; those feet looked so similar to Fern's.

(12:13 am)-

A soft voice was whispering to me, "Rain…" just my name, louder and more determined. "Rain. Rain!" The voice is calling me. Zain? Why are you so loud? Fern, tell him to be quiet. Fern? Fern!

"Rain!" I got up way to quick, causing my head to hurl in pain. Zain looked at me with a relieved expression. "Rain, you're awake."

"Thank you for telling me." I rasped. Zain looked at me with a stern face. I know what he is going to say. I know.

"Rain, Fern is dead." My breath got caught in my mouth. "When you left your group, they followed and eventually found you in the washroom, unconscious. They got Mr. Donan, and when he saw the- her feet, he said that if not by Aaroline, she died by blood loss. I'm so sorry." I looked up at him, and then took my wand from my pocket. "What're you doing?"

"Something I've wanted to do for a long time, I'm going to kill that bitch." I was in the Eastern Common Room, good thing I knew the school by heart. I can recognize every corner, even in the dark.

"Rain! You are not going alone." stated Zain.

"He's right. We are your friends and were Fern's too." said Ronnie.

"We're not leaving you alone." announced Mionly. Andrew gave a short but strong nod.

"We got to find Fern's body, it'll lead to Aaroline." I ordered.

"How do you know it'll lead to Aaroline?" asked Ronnie.

"If I know one person it is she. Aaroline will hunt us down, and she knows we want Fern; she is most definitely not leaving her alone. And if I know one thing, it is magic. Both subjects of knowledge are going to help us." I explained.

"What do you mean?" asked Andrew.

"I mean, we are going to go get our broomsticks and wands, because we're going to go to war with my aunt and her minion, Fern." Before they could ask questions, I started to run towards the dorms. The stampede of feet was right behind me. They called out my name but I didn't stop. Aaroline is not the type of person to fight her own fights, she uses people, better yet loved ones. I know she is going to use Fern, and we will have no choice but to confront her, it's a consistent fate. I reached the No House dormitory, I waited for the others to catch up and when they did, I used a charm to summon my broom from within my dorm. "Accio!" The room was silent for a moment but then you could hear broom brushing the walls of the academy, a soft humming vibration echoed from it's arrival. Then it was there, hovering right in front of me, ready for me to ride it. Everyone else called their brooms as well, when we were ready, I told them the plan. "We will scrounge the whole castle to find Aaroline, no one gets left behind, no one goes ahead of the group, and no one will separate from the group. We fly together or else we die together, got it? We'll fly like this: Andrew and Zain at the back, Ronnie and Mionly in the middle, and me in the front, we don't stray from this arrangement or else we're doomed. Now, you are going to meet unpleasant things." At that exact moment, a drop of blood fell right within the space between me and the others, we all looked up and there hanging from the ceiling was a transparent bag of bloody finger nails. On the ceiling, next to the bag was a piece of writing. Fern's writing.

"Come find me Rain. I'm waiting."

"Aqua Eructo!" A charge of water spouted from the tip of my wand towards the ceiling. The blood got washed away. "By unpleasant things, I meant things like that. Let's get going." That little stunt was just the right ingredient for my rush of adrenaline. We started south, and traveled throughout the school. The one fact that unsettled me was that Aaroline knew exactly where we were, where we went, where we looked for her, she was watching us. The proof is that we would find messages in blood wherever we went, and the worst thing was that all the messages were by Fern. Aaroline taunted us by Fern's writing in blood. We eventually reached the deep places of the castle. The school had complex dungeons in which one could get lost just placing a step within the maze. We entered the dungeons and slowly proceeded within. It was dark, we passed a corner and we just kept on doing that, passing corners. Then all of a sudden, I felt a heavy object hit my head, all went black in my consciousness. What is happening? I can hear shouts, spells clashing, but I don't see anything. I'm scared. I don't like the dark, reminds me too much of Aaroline. I like bright places because they make me calm down. The scenery changed into white. I wish I can stay here, no problems, no fear, no Aaroline. But I can hear the noises still, I feel like I have to be somewhere, I have to be where the noises are. I have to leave this perfect world because it's not mine. I closed my eyes and tried to push myself into consciousness. Wake up, wake up, wake u- I opened my eyes, a blur of lights flashed across my vision. My head hurt like a migraine. God! I blinked a few times before being able to see anything, and when I did, I saw Mionly. She was standing petrified out of fright, wand in hand. The others were fighting, flashes of light coming out of their wands. Who are they fighting? It was Aaroline, and Fern. Well, at least I thought it was Fern. Her eyes were red, she had no feet and her fingers were bleeding, she was more of a zombie than a person. A spell would hit her; she'd fall, and then get back up again. It looked like she was trying to reach us, trying to be with us again. Fern is trying to give us a hug?

"Guys, Fern is not the problem, Aaroline is!" I shouted. The three attackers froze a second, and then they started spewing spells at Aaroline. "Mionly, where's my wand?" She still stared into space. "Mionly!" Out of her trance, she clumsily looked around and then found my wand in a space next to a wall, therefore tossing it towards me. I got up with difficulty and held my wand confidently. Aaroline spat a death spell towards my friends, I jumped in between and just before it hit me, I said a counter-spell. "Protego!" The spell bounced off me and got directed at the ground. "Avada Kedavra!" The spell sheared into Aaroline, she let out a gasp while falling onto the ground. Everyone stared in shock. Fern's eyes returned human, she let out a cry of pain but soon fell into unconsciousness. I walked wearily towards Aaroline, she was finally dead. I walked towards Fern, fell to knees and hugged her, sobbing. I felt a hand on my shoulder.

I looked at her, her back frail and lonely. Her usual brown, waist-length, silky hair seemed dull, sad, and pitiful. I can't see her in pain; I won't let her be in pain. Someone will come, when they do, I'll take the blame. After all, what are friends for, especially friends in love. I know she won't let me do that so I can't tell her, I'll tell her when I tell the person that comes. All I can say to her now is "I'll wait for you. We will all wait."

When Zain said that, my heart melted and I felt tears tugging at my eyes. We all knew what was going to happen. I was going to be sent to Azkaban for using a forbidden spell; we just not dare say it. I got up and faced Zain, giving him a kiss on the lips. It was our first and was going to be our last for a very long time. We all hugged each other and waited there until someone came to state my fate. When someone came, we shared a one last silent goodbye-

PANT PANT PANT. "God, that was a very bad nightmare."

Till tomorrow then…
