REVISED: December 08, 2014
She did not know what to think or do. There was nothing that could be done in her present state. Although Inuyasha had told her the previous night about their enemy, Naraku, entering her world, it was not like she could go running into the city in a search for a hanyou. All she could do was wait for his attack although she wished he did not do such a thing in her world.
With a heavy sigh, her eyes dropped down to stare at her worn out brown shoes. Morning had arrived slowly with her sleep being interrupted constantly with thoughts on Naraku. She waited patiently below the shrine's stairs as she had promised Ichigo. Clinging onto her backpack's straps, her eyes closed tiredly.
"Sorry for making you wait."
Hearing the familiar voice, she raised her head to see the strawberry giving her a half smile. She returned it and shook her head: "No worries. I just arrived not too long ago."
"Good morning, Kagome-chan!"
Blinking at the unknown voice, Kagome looked behind Ichigo and was surprised not only to see Rukia and Renji walking towards them but also both wearing her school's uniform with a bright smile. "Huh?" she whispered.
Ichigo sighed heavily: "As you can see-"
"They are transferring to our school?" her attention went back to the two.
"Yeah…," he shook his head, wishing this could have been all avoided. Rukia and Renji stood in front of the duo. Rukia smiled at the young miko: "Good morning!"
Kagome smiled slowly: "G-Good morning, um…Rukia-chan, right?"
She received a smile glad she had been right. Her attention glided over to the maroon haired male. "You are…Renji-kun, if I can remember correctly?"
"Yup," he sent her a smile.
Ichigo gave them another sigh to catch their attention and turned around: "Let us get going then. We would not want these two idiots being late on their first day."
"Look who is talking about being idiots," smirked Rukia.
"Oh shut it," he replied as he swung his book bag over his shoulders.
Kagome walked beside the orange head and observed their conversations and interactions. She missed this. Missed the normal life, but she guessed that when faith made you destined to protect the Shikon no Tama – you did not have much of choice.
Especially if you had been the one to shatter it into millions of pieces.
"Did you end up telling, Kagome-chan?" question Sango as she brought her cup of tea to her lips. Shippou drank from his kid cup that Kagome's mother had given him to drink and watched as Inuyasha sat on the edge of the window looking out in worry.
"Yeah…I told her about it," his eyes remained out and away from the group as they sat on the floor drinking their morning tea.
Miroku placed his cup down gently: "I presume she answered to that."
"She was mad of course," Inuyasha scoffed at the memory when she yelled at him and kicked him out of her room that night, but he did not blame her. Having Naraku at the feudal era was a big problem but having him in this world would only bring more chaos.
"What do you think we should do then?" Sango's eyes landed down on the ripples of her tea.
Shippou looked behind his shoulder noticing Kagome's mother coming in with a plate of mochi snacks. She sent a smile as she spoke: "Will you all be staying?"
Miroku returned the affection of his own smile: "I am afraid so, Kagome's mother. It seems we have some problems to resolve here that have been brought."
"Oh, well do not feel burden to stay. Feel free to stay as long as you all like. After all, you all do so much as to protect my daughter for me it is the least I can do," she stood straight from her sitting position. "But Kagome does have school. Having you all here and here absent would make you all feel alone, right? Why not attend her school?"
Inuyasha's ear twitched at her offer. Turning his head to look at her, he raised an eyebrow: "Her school?"
"What is school?" whispered Miroku, sending the question to the demon slayer.
"How should I know?" she replied, confusion written on her own face.
Inuyasha pointed at his ears: "This really is not a way to show myself to a school or to this era."
"Hm, maybe with a hat?" she tilted her head to the side.
"I know what to do…," Kagome's grandfather walked in and showed them a blue bottle. "I have been saving this for years and unsure how to use it but it seems it has come to be handy."
"Class, I introduce you Kuchiki Rukia and Abarai Renji. They are transferring from Karakura Town. I know we have had a number of transfer students now but please help them feel welcomed. You two may sit on the seats behind Higurashi-san and Kurosaki-san," the teachers instructed as he returned to look for the page of his lecture.
Kagome gave herself a smile as the class resumed. It had been a normal day. This would have been her normal life it seemed. Talking with friends and having only the worry of finishing homework and passing exams. The bell rung for the end of the day.
Kagome slowly stood from her seat and placed her books inside her book bag. Closing the bag, she heard Ichigo speak up to her.
"You ready to go?"
Kagome looked up to see Rukia and Renji both waiting on them. Nodding, she carried her bag and walked out the class. Rukia looked behind her shoulder: "Kagome-chan?"
"Hm?"
"By any chance, does your shrine have a well?" she questioned.
Kagome blinked at the sudden and unexpected question: "Um…yes. May I ask why?"
"Oh…I had heard stories of a well around here being a mysterious object," she replied, making Ichigo sigh that Rukia was not taking this slow.
Kagome looked down as she walked on her path. The well. The well that had taken her 500 years in the past. Of course she could not release all this information to them. Not to normal people. With a light chuckle, Kagome looked up with a smile: "Well for as long as my grandfather has told me, that shrine has been up and alive for many years. It could be possible that the well itself has stories to tell."
Rukia's eyes looked at her from over her shoulder silently before returning her gaze up to the front: "I see."
Kagome stopped on her tracks and waved to the group: "Well, this is me. Thank you for walking with me this morning and back home." She gave them a slight bow: "Have a nice night."
Rukia nodded: "See you tomorrow, Kagome-chan."
Renji and Rukia walked ahead, leaving Ichigo placing his hand in his pocket and looking out at his friends. He stood silently and knew Kagome was staring at him intently. "Is…everything alright, Kurosaki-san?" she questioned with a tilted head.
"I do not mean this to come out rude but could you please not call me by my last name," he whispered lowly enough for her to hear from where she stood.
It took a while for Kagome to register his discomfort level. She snickered: "What? Does it make you feel old?"
Ichigo quickly turned his view to her: "Hey! I am not old! I am only saying it because it makes me feel-"
"Old," she finished for him with another chuckle.
He huffed lightly, making Kagome sigh with a soft smile: "I am only kidding. Sure. I will call you by your name now."
"Thanks…" Ichigo gave her a slight nod as he watched Kagome ascend up the stairs. She disappeared from his view and finally turned the other way to the direction of his house.
Walking into her comfort of her home, her eyes looked over at the hanging clock on the wall. 'Hm, already 5 in the afternoon.'
"Kagome!"
Startled by a voice, Kagome turned to see Souta running from downstairs and hugging her around her legs. "Kagome-onee-san!"
"W-What's wrong?" she stuttered, quite shocked to see her younger brother in such a state.
"Kagome…"
Her eyes locked back up to her grandfather's worried expression.
"What's going on?" she asked.
"Your mother has not arrived home. It has been over an hour," he whispered lowly.
"She must be stuck in traffic or something then, grandfather," she answered, trying to stay as optimistic as possible to the situation.
Kagome's grandfather shook his head: "I am afraid she left to just go buy my medication. You know your mother, Kagome. She is not one to go and get easily distracted when she has errands to do."
Setting her backpack down, Kagome looked around the house: "Where did-"
"Inuyasha and your friends went out to look for her," cried Souta. "They also felt something unsettling about this! Kagome-onee-san…I am worried!"
Kagome's eyes went back to watch her grandfather with the same worried look. "Which pharmacy did she head to?"
"The one over at Hama Street," he replied.
Nodding with the information, she turned and headed out the door in a sprint.
'Okaa-san…please be okay'.
Ichigo heard as the trash collided with the rest into the trash can after he dropped it in. He sighed tiredly of the day. His ears soon picked up the sounds of running movement. His head turned to the left, watching as Kagome ran past his house with a heavy pant.
'Kagome…?'
He wondered on her frantic run as he walked back inside his house: 'Where could she be heading off to? She seemed to be…worried.'
He met himself with a cell phone near his face. He blinked, reading the contents. "We need to go," spoke Renji as he stood behind the petite Shinigami. Ichigo looked back at the cell phone screen and noticed the direction. It was the same as Kagome's.
"Shit…," he cursed under his breath as he headed out with the duo Shinigami behind him.
Kagome walked out the pharmacy after asking the manager if she had seen her mother. She had been there over two hours ago but they mentioned she walked over to Kaoru Park. Taking the steps to her destination, she looked around in the vast park. She was surprised that the park itself was completely empty of people. No soul in sight.
Her eyes continued to scan the area until she stopped in her steps. Her eyes widened at the view of a body laying unconscious with a small pool of blood underneath. Shaking her head, she ran to the familiar person and quickly fell to her knees.
"O-Okaa-san!? Okaa-san!" she frantically checked her face to see her eyes completely shut. Placing her head on her mother's chest, she could hear a faint living signal. Relieved that she was still alive, Kagome checked the wound on her abdomen. 'W-Who did this…?'
"Kagome!"
Lifting her sight to the hanyou that landed in front of her and her mother's body, she began to slowly spill tears: "I-Inuyasha! My okaa-san…! She-!"
Inuyasha looked down at the older woman's unconscious and wounded body. His nose quickly caught scent of a hateful feeling. He growled under his breath as he unsheathed his blade. "Kagome, get your mother and yourself out here."
Confused, her eyes were set on Sango and Miroku landing down from Kirara. Both ready with weapons in hand. "What is going on?" her eyes slightly widened as she felt a familiar tingle sensation of a presence. She sensed the Shikon no Tama.
"N-Naraku…," she whispered in fear.
Behind an appearing red barrier stood the dark hanyou with his mask. Kagome found herself alone as her three companions went straight forward to destroy the barrier but failed. Kagome watched as one of Naraku's tentacles came out bloody from a previous stab.
Noticing the blood, she came to realize of her mother's attacker. With anger swelling inside of her, Kagome slowly stood from her spot: "Naraku…"
Hearing the faint chuckled behind the hanyou's mask, he sent the tentacle over for the attack on the miko. Inuyasha looked behind his shoulder as the tentacle stretched past him and noticed the target. His eyes widened in fear: "Kagome!"
In the midst of her anger, Kagome's own eyes expanded at her coming weapon. She closed her eyes, trying to place a barrier as fast as possible but found herself staring at black robed back. Sliced pieces of the blood tentacle dropped down on the ground as the miasma steam flew up.
Kagome's eyes remained glued onto the tall male figure that had protected her. He slowly turned around, revealing his identity to her. With wide eyes, Kagome could only remain silent and still.
"Are you hurt, Kagome?" he asked her.
"I-Ichi-"
"Ichigo!" she heard a familiar voice yelling out his name. Looking to the side, she noticed both Renji and Rukia running to them.
Ichigo's eyes remained on the shocked Kagome. He felt guilty. Of course she was frightened. Here she was with a wounded mother and a monster almost attacking her. He avoided her eyes: "Sorry…"
Before anyone else could move forward or utter a word, all eyes landed on the dark hanyou who had taken off his mask. His smirk widened as he gave them a small bow as his miasma grew from above to cover his body: "Kagome…until next time…"
Inuyasha growled under his breath, as he swung his sword up and stabbed nothing but ground. He cursed under his breath as he realized the hanyou had disappeared. Kagome fell once again onto her knees, wondering with anger and confusion mixed all in one.
"Kagome-chan, we have to check your mother's wounds as fast as possible," spoke Sango as she placed her hand on her friend's shoulder.
Slowly, Kagome looked back down to her mother's wound. Tears slowly streamed down: "Okaa-san…"
Rukia and Renji observed the strange group of people standing around Kagome. Renji raised an eyebrow: "Who are they?"
"I have no clue," she replied in a whisper.
Ichigo took a step towards the miko, reaching his hand to place it on her shoulder until he felt a familiar reiatsu appearing behind them. Checking over his shoulder, he noticed a slender female with a high ponytail and piercing golden eyes walking towards them.
"Well…what do we have here?" she spoke.
Ichigo's eyes narrowed: "Yoruichi."
