Chapter 15: An Unending Epilogue
At the SGC on Earth, General Landry came up the stairs from the control room and saw the Lt. Colonel standing by the window, looking out at the Stargate below. He entered the briefing room, going over to the young man, standing next to him. "Hell of a sight, isn't it, Colonel."
Paul Davis smiled as he turned. "Yes sir, it is," he acknowledged.
"Well, Colonel, what brings you to the SGC?" he asked, and noticed an officer standing in his office, his back to them. "Though I take it this has something to do with the young man waiting in my office?"
"Yes, General, it does," he handed Landry the file. "That is Major Alexander Mitchell."
"Mitchell. Any relation to Colonel Mitchell?"
"His brother. Dr. Carter put in a recommendation for the Major to be informed about the Stargate Program, and his transfer to Auratora."
"Oh she did, did she?"
Paul smiled again. "Yes sir, she did. So did General O'Neill."
"Well of course, Jack would back her up," Hank jeered and looked over the Major's file. "He's almost as bad as his brother," he commented. "Exceptional officer, excellent evaluations." He looked up. "Are you sure I can't convince him to stay."
"Dr. Carter wants him to lead ASG-10."
"Damn, we could use a man like him," the General remarked, noting. "Has a doctorate in physics; well that explains why Carter want's him."
"His brother has a masters in Psychology," Paul noted.
"Really?" Hank was a little surprised by that, but then he hadn't had much to do with the Colonel. "So, has the Major been informed?"
"He was briefed at the Pentagon two days ago, and then given his orders to report here for assignment to Auratora."
"Well this is going to be interesting," Hank remarked. Closing the file, he walked over to his office and opened the door, leaning in. "Major, come out here."
Major Alexander Mitchell, or Alex has he was better known, quickly responded, "Sir."
Hank gestured him over to the window. "Take a look, Major, it's the best sight in the mountain; well, the only one actually."
Alex walked over to the window and looked out, seeing the Stargate. It appeared a lot different than it did in the pictures. "It's bigger than I thought it would be, sir."
"Yes, I've heard that quite a bit," the General said, and seeing Colonel Reynolds come up the stairs, gestured his 2IC over. "Colonel, this is Major Alexander Mitchell, Auratora's new recruit."
Reynolds shook his hand. "Major."
"Colonel."
"The Major is also Colonel Mitchell's brother," Hank added.
Al Reynolds couldn't help but grin. "It wasn't that hard to spot, sir."
"Well, the poor boy has lived with that fact all his life, so I'm sure he'll do fine at Auratora," the General noted. "At least the female population of the galaxy will thank us. Colonel Sheppard is going to have more competition for the title of Kirk."
Alex was a little confused; Reynolds saw that right away, explaining. "Colonel Sheppard is the Head of Military operations at Atlantis, and has a record of attracting the fairer sex when it comes to alien encounters," he enlightened. "They seem to fall at his feet."
"I'll try and keep my alien encounters of the fairer sex at a limit then, sir." Alex assured, before adding. "Though I expect my brother is also in the running for the title."
"Which is why your brother's fiancé carries a P-90," the General declared. "Now, what has Colonel Davis told you of this assignment, Major?"
"I was briefed on the Stargate program at the Pentagon, the bases we've set up, as well as the cities of Atlantis and Auratora, sir," he answered. "And Colonel Davis filled me in on the threat the Pegasus galaxy is experiencing from the Wraith and the Asurans."
"They covered most of the bases then," Hank declared. "Not that we don't have our own problems here in our galaxy, but theirs is taking precedence. I'm sure Colonel Mitchell, as head of military operations at Auratora, will brief you fully when you arrive. Now, Dr. Lam will be expecting you Major," he turned to his 2IC. "Colonel, would you escort the Major to the infirmary, while I contact the good doctor and tell her Sam's new recruit is here."
"Yes, sir," he agreed. "This way, Major," He led the younger man out of the room.
After hanging up the phone, he went back to Davis. "What else do you have for me, Colonel?"
"The President is reluctant to designate a second SG-1, sir." Paul reported. "Though he stated he will continue to think about it."
"And?" Hank asked, his arms crossed against his chest.
"Vice President Hammond received a call from Mr. Mitchell, apparently you arranged for the call, General."
"I did, as the man made a valued point, and I thought Vice President Hammond should hear it."
"Well, he agreed, and Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell had a meeting with the Vice President, President Hayes and several Ambassadors who are aware of the Stargate Program," Paul announced. "Further details from the meeting will be forthcoming, which may include a ceremony taking place here or at one of the cities." The Colonel removed a folder from his briefcase, "Joe from Marshall Enterprises contacted me, and had these documents delivered to my office. They're legal documents that need to be signed before Colonel Mitchell and Dr. Jackson are married, as well as financial documents that concern both of them."
"Then you'll be taking a trip to Auratora, Colonel." Hank said without hesitation. "Unless a JAG lawyer would be better suited for the job."
"I had one of our lawyers go over the papers with the lawyers from Marshall Enterprises and everything is in order," the Colonel quickly said. "And the Pentagon has approved my going to the city."
"Very well, you'll leave as soon as the Major is cleared by Dr. Lam."
"Thank you, Sir."

Sam sat back in her chair and looked over the report she had in front of her, the second one she had read today concerning P6Y-0808. "Are we any closer to having an idea of where the Regent and his people went to?"
"No," Ryan answered her. "Dr. McKay and Lt. Browder both agreed there was a massive wormhole, which could have destroyed the entire planet, but there's no way to know where they went."
Jack saw Kayla chewing on her lip. "What is it Indiana?"
"P5G-9987, the planet where we found the information on the Alterans and the Ori. Their written history told of people dying from a plague that only attacks the ATA gene, and to escape death, they ascended. But it also told of a group of ascended beings breaking away from the others – and calling themselves the Ori. Then their followers, most likely a lower race of humans without any trace of the ATA gene, began leaving the planet for an unknown destination, to join with these Ori."
"Crap!" Cameron exclaimed. "The Regent and his people, they are joining the ancient cult from P5G-9987, and warning them about us."
She nodded, "And with that kind of technology, who knows that they could do."
"Which means the Ori are most likely building an army to go up against us, thinking that the Alterans are back in business," Jack stated.
"Indeed." Teal'c said straightforward. "We have an advantage however, do we not?"
"Teal'c's right, we have the advantage," Cameron said confidently and then looked to his archaeologist. "Don't we?"
Kayla smiled as she nodded. Gathering up her file and computer tablet she stood. "Yeah, we have the Sangreal," she stated, adding as she walked out of the conference room, "and we have no idea what we're doing."
"She's right, on both counts," he said, and saw they all agreed with him.
As they left the conference room the Stargate activated. They hurried to Operations, finding Kayla was there.
"We're receiving the SGC's IDC," Sergeant Higgins reported after the Gate activated.
"Roll it," Jack ordered.
After the visitors arrived, and the Stargate shut down, Kayla left her file and computer tablet on the top of the console, and with Sam, followed her team down the stairs to the Gate Room, where two men stood, both in BDUs, one carried a duffle, the other a briefcase. Cameron was a little surprised, "Alex."
Alex Mitchell smiled as he dropped his duffle and saluted, "Major Alex Mitchell, reporting as ordered, sir."
His brother grinned, returned the salute, and then embraced him. "Hey little brother," he greeted happily.
Sam leaned closer to her stepdaughter. "That's his brother?" Kayla nodded as Sam added, "Nice."
"Oh yeah," she agreed, and moved closer, they'd met at Thanksgiving, "Alex!"
Alex moved away from his brother. "Kayla, wow, you look great," he gushed, and hugged her.
Jack cleared his throat. "Are we finished with the reunion?" he asked sarcastically.
Paul chuckled softly as the two moved apart, and Alex took his duffle. "It's good to see you again, General."
"Colonel, other than dropping off Mitchell's brother, what brings you to our fair city?"
"I have documents the Colonel and Dr. Jackson need to sign, and I need to have a word with yourself and Dr. Carter." Paul reported.
"Well, bring yourself and your documents to our office, and let SG-1 handle Mitchell. When we're finished the Colonel and Indiana are all yours."
"Yes, sir." He quickly took a file from his briefcase and gave it to Cameron. "You're brother's file, Colonel."
"Thanks, give us a call when you're finished with the General and Sam, and we'll talk," Cameron told him, and then he and his team led his brother away, introducing Michaels and Teal'c to the new guy.
Jack shook his head. "Come along Colonel," he insisted as he and Sam took him up the stairs, through operations and into the office they shared, sitting. "All right, Colonel, spill it."
Paul smiled and took a file from his briefcase, giving it to the General. "The President, Vice President, and several Ambassadors had a meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell, concerning the fact that the civilian members of the Atlantis expedition, Auratora, the SGC and other bases haven't been given the recognition they deserve. The President agreed that the civilians deserve recognition, and a ceremony is being planned. It hasn't been decided yet whether it will be held at the SGC or here or Atlantis, or if they'll conduct separate ceremonies."
"For all civilians or just certain civilians?" Sam asked.
"A list of civilians deserving recognition is required from each base and city," Paul revealed. "Daniel, Kayla, Dr. Weir and Dr. McKay are already at the top of the President's list."
"Well, it's about damn time!" Jack declared.
"Yes sir, it is." Paul agreed. "There's more though. The President is also looking into the prospect of having only military personnel travel through the Stargate."
"And what about the civilians who want or need to continue traveling through the Stargate?" Sam asked before Jack could scream.
"They'll be given direct entry into the Air Force with appropriate ranks," the Colonel announced. "With all that Daniel has done for Earth, and his education, he'll be enlisted into the Air Force with the rank of Lt. Colonel, as will Teal'c. Kayla will be brought in as a Major, as will Dr. McKay, Ronon Dex and Teyla Emmagan."
Jack sat forward. "Colonel, Kayla is 24 going on 25; she's a little young to take the rank of Major."
"With all due respect sir, with Kayla having been trained by the best we have in the Air Force and the SGC, and being qualified to fly a number of Air Force aircraft, not to mention specialized aircraft, such as the F-302, and her education, the President believes giving her any other rank would be insulting to her." Paul said strongly. "For now though, the President is just thinking about it, nothing has been decided."
"Well, I hope he thinks long and hard about it," Jack said dryly.
"Yes sir."
"All right, Colonel, if there's nothing else, you can get your business with Mitchell and Kayla out of the way."
"Thank you, sir," he acknowledged. "The President does ask that you keep everything we've discussed to yourselves for the moment."
"We're very good at keeping secrets, Paul," Sam assured him, and then pretended to tap her earmic. "Colonel Mitchell, you won't believe what the President wants to do with Kayla…" As both Davis and Jack looked at her in shock, she pointed at them and said, "Gotcha!" She then tapped the earmic, "Mitchell, come in."
"Go ahead, Sam." Both Jack and Davis had leaned closer to hear the response, and she waved them off with a smile.
"Colonel Davis is ready to talk with you and Kayla."
"Have him taken to Jackson's lab, we'll meet him there."
"I'll do that, Colonel," she said and tapped off the earmic, going to the door of the office. "Sergeant Williams."
The Sergeant came over the walkway to them. "Ma'am?"
"Will you escort Colonel Davis to Dr. Jackson's lab and wait with him until she and Colonel Mitchell arrive?"
"Yes Ma'am."
Paul stood, taking his briefcase, nodding to Jack. "General, it's been fun," rolling his eyes at Sam.
Jack waved him off, sitting back in his chair, frowning as the Colonel left with the Sergeant, waiting until Sam had returned to her seat. "Having Daniel and Kayla getting recognized for what they've done, that I agree with. But putting them both in the Air Force…" He shook his head, and then continued before she could interrupt. "Don't get me wrong, Daniel and Kayla are capable leaders; hell, I wouldn't let them take teams through the Stargate if they weren't. But the way they lead is totally different from the way a military officer would. And to be quite honest, I like their way; it brings them and their team home alive."
"And having them as Air Force officers would stop them from leading the same way?" she asked him, confused.
"Sam, you know yourself how hard it was for Danny when he first started with the program. The bullshit he put up with, the harassment from military personnel on base because he was a civilian," Jack reminded. "They even thought he was gay at one stage, even though he was married. He had the shit beaten out of him because of it."
Sam sat straight up in her seat, she hadn't known about that. "When Jack?" she demanded angrily.
"It doesn't matter when; the point is, it took time for Daniel to earn the respect of the military personnel. Can you imagine what some will think if the President suddenly enlists him into the Air Force, and makes him a Lt. Colonel too boot? Not to mention what they'll think about Kayla, being made a Major at her age. It wouldn't be easy for either of them. The only ones who wouldn't get flak would be Teal'c and Ronon, because they scare half of the military personnel as it is; and of course, McKay, mainly because he does the same in his own way. The gossip around the city is if you get McKay mad at you, don't go near an airlock, or one of his labs. And possibly Teyla, the military personnel respect her already."
She knew he had a point, she didn't like it, but he was right. "So what do we do?"
"We hope the President sees it the same way as we do." Jack said solemnly. "If he doesn't, then anyone who can't handle taking orders from them as officers will be sent back to Earth, no questions asked."
Nodding, Sam agreed. "Let's just hope it doesn't come to that."
"Yeah."
DF
"All right, Colonel, sign here and here," Paul pointed, after getting Cameron Mitchell to go through the documents he'd brought with him; having begun with the pre-nuptial agreement.
"So how much was Joe told about where and what we're doing?" Cameron inquired. They were alone in Kayla's office, as she had gone to her quarters after a call from Teresa about Danyelle; the toddler was getting over a mild cold.
"He was told you and Kayla are working at a top secret installation oversees, and if he needs to contact her at any time, he's to call the Pentagon on the number given to him. General Williams, who's taken over as Head of Homeworld Security, will contact General Landry for a message to be sent through the Stargate." Paul took the signed documents when they were handed back to him. "Marshall Enterprises has been handling some Top Secret contracts, so Joe understands the need for secrecy."
Cameron signed the last of the documents. "There you go, Colonel."
Paul gathered them up and put them back into his briefcase. "Thank you, Colonel. I'll head back to Earth and have these documents delivered straight away."
"Well if you get to talk to Joe, tell him we said hi, and that we're fine." Cameron said, knowing that's what Kayla would have wanted.
"I'll do that," he stood. "I'll let you go see your daughter."
Cameron stood and escorted the Colonel to Sergeant Williams, still waiting outside the lab. "Sergeant, please escort the Colonel back to Operations."
"Yes, sir," Williams acknowledged, and guided the Colonel down the corridor.
With a mental request, Cameron shut off the lights in the lab and shut the door, heading for the nearest transport chamber. He hurried to his quarters, entering quietly. Kayla was standing by the windows, looking out over the city. The door to their daughter's room was closed, so he guessed she was sleeping. "How's the munchkin?" he whispered.
"Asleep, I told Teri to get some rest herself," Kayla said softly. She had her arms wrapped around her middle.
She'd had time to think about what had happened concerning the Ori, and that wasn't good, her brooding over what had gone wrong usual led to a meltdown. He didn't want to see that happen, he'd been through it too many times. She often blamed herself for anything that had gone wrong, and it wasn't fair. What had happened on P6Y-0808 wasn't her fault.
Cameron went over to her and wrapped his arms around her. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I was just thinking."
"About what?"
"How stupid I was for leaving the information on the Ori on my PDA," she answered chastising herself. "I should have known better."
"Kay…"
"Don't." She shrugged out of his embrace and turned, her arms still wrapped around herself in a tight protective way. "Life is too short Cam, and I nearly caused our own deaths. All because I couldn't be bothered to remove data from my PDA, data that took me only seconds to transfer last night."
"That data has saved our lives quite a few times."
"It brought forth the Ori; it nearly left Danny without parents – again."
"Kayla," he took hold of her shoulders, "we don't know when the Ori are going to be a danger to us, it's better to face them now while we are prepared and know they are coming, and we're certainly not going to leave Danny without parents."
"How can you say that?" she demanded, her voice full of emotion.
"Because you once told me I had a good heart and soul," he said calmly, being her voice of reason. "And I trust you; I trust that when the time comes you and I will take the next step together, or you'll be there for me, and me for you, but we will help each other."
"You're talking about ascension?"
"Yes. You once told me I could do it, and you made me believe it," he cupped her face in his hands. "I love you, Kayla. You are my soul-mate, my other half; and if anything happens to me I will do my best to ascend. To be there for you and Danny, ascended or descended."
Tears welled in her eyes. "Me too; I love you, Cam, I will always love you," she turned her face, nuzzling her cheek against his hand, wetting it with her tears.
He brushed his lips against hers, and then wiped her tear-streaked cheeks, making a decision – life was too short and he was grabbing hold of what he wanted. "Grab Danny."
"Why?" she asked.
"Because life is too short," he told her. "Go."
Not wanting to argue, she hurried to her daughter's room. Cameron got the jewelry box from where they'd put it, shoving it in his pocket before tapping his earmic. "Major Michaels."
"Yes, sir?"
"Is Teal'c with you?"
"I am here, Colonel Mitchell."
"I want you to do something for me," he announced and filled them in quickly, keeping his voice down.
"Right away, Sir." Ryan acknowledged, happily.
"Thanks guys," he tapped his earmic off as Kayla returned with their sleepy daughter in her arms. "Let's go sweetheart."
"Where?"
"To see Father Kavan."
Kayla realized what he was proposing. "Cam…"
"Kayla, I love you, I want to marry you. I want you to be my wife," he caressed her cheek with his fingers. "Life is too short darlin', and you should know by now I'm not a patient man at times."
She did know, and she loved him, faults and all. "I just didn't picture us getting married in our BDUs," she said as their waking daughter grabbed at his BDU shirt. "I had a gown made and picked it up last time we were on Earth. I saw you in your Class A's and Danny in a pretty dress your mom sent us."
Cameron smiled cheekily. "Then darling, we've got to hustle, let's get changed," he told her, his southern accent shining through.
She nodded; they could do this. "All right," she agreed and headed back into their daughter's room to get her ready first.
Cameron headed to their room while contacting Michaels again, asking one more favor, giving the Major a little more time. He then changed into his Class A's, putting his sidearm in the lock-box for safety.
Kayla came in, having left Danyelle in her room. She saw him standing there and her breath was taken away for a moment. "We're really doing this, aren't we?"
"We're really doing it," he told her.
She removed her nine-mil from the holster, and gave it to him to put in the lock-box. She dumped the gun belt on the bed and grabbed the suite bag holding her gown, and slipped into the bathroom.
Cameron took the jewelry box, put it into his pocket and put his earmic back on. He gave his uniform the once over, every ribbon was in place, his shoes shined. He didn't worry about his cap, leaving it. He did, however, suck in his breath when his bride-to-be came back into the room. She looked beautiful in the body hugging gown. Blushing, she did a slow turn, the skirt split up the back so she could walk comfortably. The back of the bodice was cut low, and edged with crystals; the front was heavily stiffened and boned, embroidered with silver thread, the design - star constellations. The long sleeves of the dress were also embroidered with silver thread, this time with the Gate addresses for Earth and Auratora running down the long sleeves. She had pulled her hair up into a French braid, tucking the end of the braid within itself. She'd applied a little make up, something she didn't normally wear.
"What do you think?" she asked nervously as she put her earmic back on. She'd left her ID tags in the bathroom.
"I think I'm glad you suggested we change. You look stunning."
She blushed even more. "We should get going," she told him, after slipping her feet into a pair of white shoes.
He nodded, and then thought of something. Rushing over to the bedside table, he opened a drawer and took out a small case. Removing a pair of silver wings, he went over to her. He realized he'd never get them pinned to the bodice because of the stiffening, so he pinned them to the shoulder of her dress.
She was taken back. "Cam…"
"They're my dad's, he gave them to me for good luck. I want you to wear them."
Tears came to her yes. "Thank you."
He lightly kissed her lips. "Let's go do this, Dr. Jackson."
"Let's Colonel Mitchell," she said with a smile.
Getting Danyelle from her room, they left their quarters, going to the nearest transport chamber without being spotted. Once inside, Kayla took Cameron's hand. He carried Danyelle on his hip, holding her securely. She then put her hand on the elevator map and closed her eyes, concentrating. They were transported away, not to another chamber, but straight into the chapel.
Father Kavan was a little surprised to see them appear out of thin air as he stood with Alex Mitchell, Teal'c, and Ryan Michaels, the two officers in their Class A's, Teal'c in a black suit.
"Everything is ready, Colonel." Ryan said with a nod of his head; which was true, as everyone had been on alert for months. So getting everyone organized at a moments notice had been a piece of cake.
"Are you sure you want to do this now, Colonel, Dr. Jackson?" Father Kavan asked them.
"We're sure," Cameron spoke for them both. He handed his sleepy daughter to her Uncle. "Danny, this is your Uncle Alex, he's going to hold you for a moment, okay."
She nodded, her thumb in her mouth, snuggling into the crook of Alex's shoulder. He smiled, a little surprised. "You're going to have to tell me this story big brother."
"Later, I promise. I take it you've had the gene therapy?" He guessed.
Alex nodded. "How did you know?"
"Danny went to you straight away. She doesn't do that normally, only with people who have the ATA gene naturally or have had the gene therapy." Cameron explained as they followed Father Kavan to the front of the chapel. He handed Michaels the jewelry box, which he tucked into his pocket.
Teal'c stood with Kayla, and on her left she continued to hold Cameron's hand. Ryan stood to Cam's left as his best man; and Alex to the far left with Danyelle.
When Joshua Kavan was ready, he smiled at the happy couple. "Let's begin, shall we," and then ignored the family and friends who were quietly coming into the chapel. "We are here today, in this city of the Ancients, to join Cameron and Kayla in marriage. Two souls who found each other, their friendship becoming love that bound them together. They have fought side by side, laughed, cried, and shared each other's pain. You could say their relationship developed on blood, sweat, and tears." He paused as they smiled. "They have faced life and death together, now they take the next step in their relationship; they become husband and wife. If you'll face your bride, Cameron." He paused as they faced each other and Cameron held both her hands in his. "Cameron and Kayla have written their own vows, appropriate to the city in which they reside. Cameron."
Cameron nodded and licked his bottom lip before beginning. "I, Cameron, son of Wendy and Frank, adopted son of Auratora; bind in marriage to Kayla. I give to her my all, including my heart and soul. I will protect her and our children with all that I am. I will walk with her through happiness and sorrow, through each trial and tribulation. I will stand at her side and face all, not as two, but as one."
Joshua smiled and nodded to the young woman. "Kayla."
She smiled, and squeezed Cameron's hands before saying. "I, Kayla, daughter of Samantha and Daniel, adopted daughter of Auratora, child of the Ancients; bind in marriage to Cameron. I give all that I am and all that I will be. I stand at his side as his wife and mother of our children. I will remain at his side through happiness and sorrow, in all trials and tribulations. I walk this path with him, not separately, but together – for we are one."
Joshua looked to the Major. "The rings please?" he asked and waited until they were handed to him. He blessed both and then gave the smallest to Cameron. "Repeat after me."
Cameron took the ring and slipped it on Kayla's finger as he repeated the words of the minister, "I give this ring as a symbol of my love and devotion to you," he ran his thumb over the ring and for a moment it glowed.
Kayla accepted a ring from Father Kavan and slipped it on Cameron's finger, saying. "I give this ring as a symbol of my love and devotion to you," she then ran her thumb over the ring, and it also glowed for a moment. Smiling they joined hands again.
The lights quickly dimmed in the chapel, leaving only a soft glow suspended in mid-air, centered on the wedding party. It was as if the city was giving its blessing.
Recovering from yet another shock, Joshua continued. "With the saying of vows and the exchanging of rings, I now pronounce, Cameron and Kayla, children of Auratora, protectors of the city, man and wife. Cameron you may kiss your wife."
"Yes sir," he said and drew her into his arms, kissing her, her body perfectly molded against his, neither taking any notice of the lights brightening, or the fact that the chapel was now crowded. Not until they heard clapping and cheering, did both look.
Ryan grinned from ear-to-ear, and clearing his voice, he said, "Presenting for the first time, Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell and Dr. Kayla Jackson-Mitchell."
Kayla saw her father and stepmother standing with John and Elizabeth, Ari and Aeron with them, the twins with their parents. Rodney stood with Jack, Margo, and Drew, the other set of twins in their parent's arms. Ronon and Teyla stood with Carson, Sarah Brightman, Jon, and Cassie. Tyler and Christian Stone stood with their daughter next to Sergeant Allston and her partner and children, along with many other friends and colleagues. Kayla looked to her husband. "You were busy," she whispered.
"I was," he mused. "But Michaels and Teal'c deserve all the credit."
She brushed her lips against his. "You thought of it," she said, and then kissed him again, hearing a groan, knowing exactly how she was affecting him. "I love you, Colonel Mitchell."
"I love you, Dr. Jackson-Mitchell," Cameron whispered back as their family and friends moved forward to congratulate them.

One month later, Cameron circled his arms around his wife. The two stood on the balcony just off from operations. The sun was setting, casting an orange glow over the water. They had time before the ceremony began, before the guests arrived. "You're thinking again," he mused and nuzzled the side of her neck with his lips.
She tilted her head, giving him better access to her neck, a smile easing onto her lips. "I'm always thinking."
"I know," he said and then nipped playfully at her neck, being careful not to leave a mark. Facing the President of the United States with a hickey wouldn't be good. "Stop it. Thinking can ruin your brain!"
"Is that an order, Colonel?" she asked, teasing him.
"Yes, damn it," he growled mischievously.
Kayla turned in his arm, circling hers around his neck, he looked sexy in his Class A's, not to mention it had taken them awhile to get out of their quarter's when he'd gotten dressed. "Yes, sir, Colonel, sir," she said with a melodious purr.
Cameron growled again, this time with a more sexual tone to it. "You're killing me here, doc," he moaned.
"Mmm, I know," she stretched up on her toes and kissed him, sucking seductively on his bottom lip. "Do you think they'd miss us?"
He wished they wouldn't. "Yes," he moaned, disheartened. His new father-in-law had said they were still in the honeymoon phase, and if this was it then he didn't want it to end. They controlled themselves off-world and when at work, but alone in their quarters, or when they were off-duty, well, the rank and salutation were put aside and it was just Cameron and Kayla. Husband and wife, father and mother to Danyelle, and that was it. He slid his hands down to her butt and pushed her against him. "If we had more time," he hissed in her ear.
"Later?"
"Later," he promised.
The President and several Ambassador's, with the help of Cameron's own parents, made the decision to honor the civilian member of both expeditions, off-world bases and the SGC. The ceremony was the last of the three planned to take place. His parents had arrived through the Stargate that morning, and were at that moment fussing over their granddaughter.
Kayla saw that she wasn't the only one thinking; she smiled warmly, her blue eyes sparkling. No matter what the future had in store for them, they would face it together. "We should go inside."
"Yep, we should," and stepped back, admiring his beautiful wife. She looked stunning in the tailored black skirt, and the blue blouse set off her eyes perfectly. He loved her in blue, always had. She wore a black tailored jacket; buttoned it showed off her tiny waist. The one thing that made him smile, she still wore her ID tags, they were tucked under her blouse, but she wore them. They were a part of her, as his were a part of him. He took her hand. "Shall we, Dr. Jackson?"
"We shall, Colonel Mitchell," she said with a smile, and allowed him to guide her back into the city. As soon as they left the balcony, both stopped, the hum that was constantly in the back of their minds from the city seemed to spike for a moment.
"Whoa, what was that?" Cameron asked her a little unsure, knowing she'd felt it stronger than him.
"I think it was Auratora," she answered feeling the same way.
"Why?"
She frowned. "I'm not quite sure, perhaps she's just happy," she theorized.
"Well, we're going to have to find out later, we've a ceremony to attend," he rationalized. "Remember, the President, Vice President, a whole lot of Ambassadors; very important people Indiana."
"I remember," she smiled and squeezed his hand. "Come on, Colonel."
"Yes Ma'am," he jeered and they continued into the building, arriving at the Gate Room.
Jack gestured them over. "Well, kids you're looking smart."
"We try sir," Cameron said cockily.
"Good, then you're ready."
"We're ready, Jack," Kayla assured. "Is dad?"
"Oh yes, Danny-boy is ready," he smirked.
"You're enjoying this a little too much, Uncle Jack," she accused him.
"Sure I am, but I know the whole truth about this ceremony," he pointed out. And he did. Those from Atlantis and the SGC, those that had already had their ceremonies, were sworn to secrecy until this ceremony was over.
"So, would this be a bad time to tell you, Auratora spiked us mentally as we walked in off the balcony?" Cameron asked him innocently.
"Yes, Colonel, it would be," Jack retorted, and then added. "We'll deal with our temperamental city after the ceremony."
"Yes sir."
Daniel and Sam walked into the Gate Room, along with the Ambassadors from a number of different countries, all which were still amazed by Gate travel and the city. They'd arrived earlier, and had been given a tour.
The Gate Room was starting to fill up with personnel and their families, all there on Jack's request. Wendy and Frank stood with Teresa and little Danyelle, who held her grandfather's hand. Ari stood next to Leanne, who had the twins in a stroller and little Aeron in her arms. Margo stood with her, along with Sally and Drew. Margo held Marcus, while Jason was in his nanny's arms.
The Stargate chevrons started to light up as "Incoming wormhole!" was announced over the com system. The Stargate activated behind the shield, as all tensed. SG-1 had moved together, having reached inside jacket's to remove side-arms, taking up positions along with other team members to protect those behind them. "It's the Tok'ra, lowering shield." As the shield vanished, nobody relaxed until two Tok'ra agents walked through. Jacob Carter and Jonas Quinn, the Stargate shutting down behind them.
Jacob eyed the guns pointed at them, "Nice welcome you give here," he jeered.
The guns were put away, tucked back into shoulder holsters, chuckles heard as jacket's were done up.
Sam hurried over to her father, giving him a hug. "Hi dad," she greeted, and then turned to Jonas. "This is a pleasant surprise; what are you doing here, is something wrong?"
"We came to visit," Jacob revealed. "That and General Landry said you were having a little ceremony we needed to attend, so here we are."
"If it is all right, Sam," Jonas asked politely, "I would like to have a look at the Library when the ceremony is over."
"I don't mind at all, Jonas, I'm happy you and dad are here," she assured them.
Jack wondered over. "Jake, Jonas, welcome to Auratora."
"Jack, you look happy, is something wrong?" Jacob smirked.
"Thank you, Jacob. Having a wife and four kids will do that to you!" the General remarked as they moved away from the Stargate.
Kayla went over to Jacob and hugged him. "Hi grandpa."
"Hey kiddo," he held her at arm's length. "You look wonderful, married life must be agreeing with you."
"It is," she said happily.
Jacob looked over her shoulder at his granddaughter's husband. "Cameron!"
Cameron smiled smugly. "Jacob. How's Selmac?"
His eyes blinked as his symbiote took control. "I am well, Colonel Mitchell. Congratulations on your wedding. I am proud to call you grandson."
"Why, thank you Selmac."
Jacob took back control. "But don't think you get to call me granddad, Mitchell."
"Wouldn't think of it," Cameron promised him, still smiling.
Ari broke away from his nanny and made his way through the startled Ambassadors to his grandfather. "Grandpa."
Jacob picked the boy up in his arms. "Hey kiddo," he greeted. "You've grown."
"I'm five now." Ari said proudly.
His grandfather laughed. "So you are."
Sam smiled. "Ari, why don't you take grandpa and Jonas over to where Leanne is with Aeron and the twins?"
"Okay," the little boy agreed, and when he was put down, he took his grandfather's hand and led the two Tok'ra agents back the way he came. Jacob and Jonas quickly said hello to Daniel on the way.
The Stargate activated again, and this time the call for attention was given. The puddle rippled and the President of the United States, the Vice President and two secret service agents came through, one of the agents carrying a briefcase. The Stargate closed behind them. Jack and Sam hurried over to them, the General saluting. "Welcome to Auratora, Mr. President, Mr. Vice President."
Henry Hayes looked around, grinning. "It's good to be here, Jack, this city is amazing."
"I wish you had time for a tour, sir."
"So do I," he said, and then greeted Sam. "Dr. Carter."
"Mr. President," she said with a smile. "It's a pleasure to have you here, sir."
"The pleasure is mine, Samantha."
George Hammond gave Sam a quick hug. "How are my grandchildren?"
"They're fine, sir," she assured. "With their nanny." She pointed them out.
George saw Ari wave, the little boy grinning. He smiled and waved back. "He's growing into a heartbreaker, Sam."
"Takes after his father, sir," she said proudly.
"Well, shall we get this ceremony started." Jack suggested, and with a nod from both the President and Vice President, he and Sam lead them over to the podium, where a citywide communications microphone had been set up. Those who couldn't attend were watching the ceremony on monitors. The Ambassadors joined the President and Vice President, standing with them.
Jack stood before the podium, seeing that he had everyone's attention. "Mr. President, Mr. Vice President, Ambassadors, ladies and gentlemen. This ceremony today is the last of three; we are here today to recognize men and women who have served not only their country, but their planet and humanity." He paused, looking over those who were in attendance. SG-1 stood together, as did the ASG teams, even Daniel had moved to stand with his team. Family and other expedition members stood together. "Over the last ten, nearly eleven years, men and women have gone beyond their training and experience to fight an enemy that, before they came to the SGC, was only science fiction. Military and civilian personnel have fought and died for the freedom we believe in."
He stepped back and Sam took his place. "Military personnel have been recognized for their contribution to this fight, and civilian personnel have had commendations added to their records. However, they have never been rewarded in the same way as their military counterparts - until today. A list of nominations was put forward to President Hayes and Vice President Hammond, by myself, General O'Neill and all senior military personnel. Today we see the well deserved recognition given, a new tradition that will continue far into the future."
Each Ambassador stepped forward, and a name was called out, their country's highest civilian award was given. Finally President Hayes and Vice President Hammond came to the podium, congratulations were put aside, and the Gate Room becoming quiet once more.
The President spoke first. "When I first took office, and was told of the Stargate program, four names came to my attention – Colonel Jack O'Neill, Major Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Teal'c. SG-1 – they were larger than life, and their mission reports read like a science fiction novel." He paused. "It wasn't until a good friend of mine took over as Vice President that I really got to know these people. They became more than names on a piece of paper, they were heroes; three men and one woman who put their lives on the line for their planet each time they stepped through the Stargate. The first time I meet them, I have to admit I was a little in awe."
He smiled at the quiet chuckles, and continued, "I was almost saddened when, with the demise of the Goa'uld, to know SG-1 was splitting up, going on with their careers. Lt. Colonel Carter transferred to Area 51, heading up R&D. Dr. Daniel Jackson took an assignment to Atlantis, and Teal'c returned to his people, freed from slavery. But General O'Neill assured me SG-1 was not finished. Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell took over as team leader and was given the task of rebuilding the team. Major Ryan Michaels was the first brought in, and then Teal'c returned to his place within SG-1. The fourth position was a little harder to fill, and from the reports I received, Colonel Mitchell went through seven candidates until finally a young archaeologist-linguist was brought into the team. Dr. Kayla Jackson - the daughter of Dr. Daniel Jackson. A young woman described by General O'Neill as stubborn, curious, brilliant, ambitious, intuitive, ethical and diplomatic. Words he'd used to describe her father, well the ones I can repeat anyway." Quiet chuckles were heard.
George Hammond took over the podium as the President moved to one side, the secret service agent with the briefcase stood next to him. "My first impressions of Daniel Jackson were mixed, but he won my respect quickly. He and his team members became a part of my family, and I felt honored to call him son on more than one occasion. I also feel honored to call his young children my grandchildren." He smiled warmly at Daniel, who was a little embarrassed.
"I have watched him grow into a position he was thrust into, and over the years he became a soldier in order to survive. As much as he hated it, he did it. He also became a leader, not only of the civilians he worked with, but military personnel. Air Force and Marine personnel took orders from him as they would any ranking office. They looked to him for advice, and were willing to risk their own lives to make sure he remained safe."
Pausing he looked from father to daughter. "When his daughter joined SG-1, she stepped into some very large shoes, and surprisingly, she filed them without hesitation. The military personnel within the SGC quickly came to respect the young woman. They discovered she could handle anything they threw at her, and that she would not hesitate to stand with them on the front lines." He paused again, seeing this time Kayla shift from foot to foot. "Her relationship with Colonel Mitchell was one that went from friendship to more, and when that happened, General O'Neill came to me for advice. His words stuck in my mind – he said to me, and I quote,
I've seen them fight. They've had screaming matches that would have had Daniel and me running for cover. And I've seen Mitchell reach the point of wanting to strangle her; but he knows that when she's right, she's right, no matter how big of a pain in the ass she's been. And I've seen her come through the Stargate in so much pain that she's barely walking. Not physical pain, but emotional pain; and Mitchell has been at her side, knowing she'd break and he would be there to catch her.
The Vice President paused again, taking a moment for his words to sink in. "Daniel Jackson and Kayla Jackson have experienced more than any man or woman should when it comes to pain, suffering, and death. They have seen friends and comrades killed before their eyes. They have fought hard to keep men and women alive, to get them medical help. And they have put their own lives on the line. Daniel has even died to save others, and Kayla has nearly lost her life on more than one occasion. Neither has asked for any recognition, I doubt they even realize the number of commendations that are in their records. Today though, their heroism, their selfless dedication to their planet, will be recognized. Doctors if you would join us."
Both Daniel and Kayla hesitated, and then walked up to the podium, standing before the President; both wondering what was going on.
"Doctor Daniel Jackson and Doctor Kayla Jackson are hereby granted the highest civilian award bestowed on an American citizen by the President of the United States," the Vice President announced. "For their meritorious contribution to the security and national interests of the United States, the planet Earth and galactic peace; President Henry Hayes, President of the United States of America, bestows Daniel and Kayla with the Presidential Medal of Freedom – congratulations Doctors."
Both Daniel and Kayla stood stunned as the President was handed medals and hung them around their necks, congratulating them both. Both Jacksons managed to thank him as those attending clapped and cheered.
George smiled, and continued when it settled down. "Teal'c, would you also join us." He saw the Jaffa raise an eyebrow and then walk over to them. "Teal'c has served tirelessly beside his teammates and other members of the SGC. He swore to serve the Tau'ri, and became known by his other Jaffa freedom fighters as Teal'c of the Tau'ri. Today it is my great honor to bestow a new award to honor his service to our planet: The Tau'ri medal of Valor." He took the medal and moved from the podium and hung it around Teal'c's neck, smoothing the ribbon out. "This is well deserved, Teal'c."
"Thank you, Vice President Hammond."
President Hayes took over at the podium. "Colonel Mitchell would you and Major Michaels join us please," he waited until they had. He then gestured to Jack and Sam. "General, Doctor, if you would." He smiled warmly at their curiosity as they took their places. "I believe there are two past members of SG-1 with us," he announced. "Dr. Quinn, Lt. Colonel Sheppard, if you'd join us."
The present and past members of SG-1 glanced around and saw John Sheppard step out of the crowd in his Class A's, and along with Jonas Quinn, walked over to them. He was grinning as they took their places. Only John had known about this.
The President continued. "For service above and beyond the call of duty, I hereby award the present and past members of SG-1, the newly commissioned Tau'ri Medal of Honor." He stepped from behind the podium and took the medals as they were handed to him, placing them around their necks, congratulating them. The Gate Room erupted in cheers and clapping once more, family, friends and colleagues were happy to see the recognition given where it was deserved.
SG-1, past and present, stood to one side, and before the ceremony was concluded there were more military awards given, including several Purple Hearts; Major Montgomery, Captain Hailey and Lt. Simons among those receiving them.
The President and Vice President happily shook hands with civilian and military personnel, as well as their families, when the ceremony was concluded. Before they returned to Earth, Jack and Sam insisted they return at any time. Both Henry Hayes and George Hammond happily accepted, and stepped through the Stargate with their secret service agents. As the Stargate closed down, the Gate Room started to empty, a reception planned in one of the larger halls within the city.
John stood with SG-1, but he couldn't stay; he had to get back to Atlantis.
Kayla hugged him. "You knew about getting the Tau'ri Medal of Honor, didn't you?"
"The President might have mentioned it when he came to Atlantis," he said with a smirk. "It's a bit hard to remember, as Rodney was parading around after getting his MBE, but he may have mentioned it."
She playfully punched his arm, and then hugged him again. "I'm glad you were here."
"I wouldn't have been anywhere else, squirt," he promised her.
Cameron shook his hand. "Anytime you want to come back and be a part of SG-1, just say the word."
"Thanks, Cam," he said earnestly. "Now, I have to get home, before my fiancé starts wondering where I've gotten to." They all stared at him. "Did I forget to mention Elizabeth and I were getting married?"
"Yes," they said at once, and then congratulated him.
The Stargate activated as Jack came over to them, "Colonel, you're all set."
"Thank you, sir." He quickly hugged Kayla again. "Be good, squirt."
"You too, John."
"Always," he promised, and then looked to Cameron, an unspoken message passed between them. He then turned to Jack. "Sir."
"Colonel." With a nod, John turned and walked into the wormhole.
"All right campers, we've a reception to attend," Jack announced, and ushered them out. "Let's go."
Smiling they went with him, joining friends and family for the celebration.

One week later, Ryan asked, "So, do you think the President will do it, Colonel?" as they walked into the Gate Room, geared up for another mission. They'd been talking about the rumors of the President thinking about only having military personnel going through the Gate, which meant civilian team members being given direct entry into the military.
"I don't know, Major," Cameron admitted. "And at the moment it's only a rumor."
"Rumors can sometimes become fact," Kayla noted.
"Indeed," Teal'c agreed.
"So if it happens, then SG-1 will be a full military until." The Colonel shook his head, dismissing issue, "We'll still be SG-1."
"We will indeed, Colonel Mitchell," the Jaffa agreed.
Cameron then grinned at his archaeologist. "Besides Jackson, you'd look good in Class A's."
Kayla took the jib as it was meant, and threw one back. "Well, I look good in your Class A's, Mitchell, the jacket anyway," she said with a sexy purr; seeing she was getting a reaction as Ryan chuckled and Teal'c smirked.
"Don't I know it," Cameron mused, not being caught out.
The Stargate activated with a kawoosh, and settled into a watery event horizon. Jack was in Stargate operations, seeing them off, as he called down, "Good luck, SG-1."
Cameron turned a little, glancing up at the General. "Just another everyday mission to save the galaxy, sir," he said with casual ease.
His teammates glanced at each other, and said in unison, "Indeed!"
Jack chuckled. "Godspeed," he bid them.
Smiling, they walked up to the event horizon, and stepped through the Stargate.
