Chapter XXXI
For a joyful country such as Narnia, their festivities always managed to impress. The different folklores blended together to give an air of familiarity and prosperity, a feeling of home, humans and mythical creatures alike danced, ate and laughed together between the glittering alleys of the capitol, a sight that not even the greatest painter could draw, nor could he express all the happiness and joy radiating from the narnians. Cair Paravel was no exception. The whole castle shined like a diamond in the sky, from the different candles lightened in every corner, every corridor, even the personal quarters, but here, the festivities were concentrated in the great hall, a marvelous and large room made of marble and colorful glass, with flowers and glitters decorating its walls.
Whether they were noble or poor, royal or not, they all danced in harmony to the lively tune played by the fauns, if someone got the steps wrong, they would laugh it off and do whatever they wanted, for they weren't here to be judged on their dancing skills, but to glorify Narnia's victory, they were finally at peace.
The trumpets resounded halting the partying, making them all look towards the stairs as their sovereigns made their entrance.
"Their majesties High king Peter the magnificent and Queen Susan the gentle."
The mentioned began descending the stairs with a warm smile plastered on both their faces. They each looked radiant, and their people were once more left gaping at their sovereigns, the gentle was clad in a beautiful red gown embroidered with beautiful gold patterns at the bodice, the skirt nothing but fine silk flowing down, while her sleeves, made of the same material, reached her elbow, a circle of gold patterns at the end of it, then they flowed down in transparent material, her hair was left down as she knew she would be dancing and her gold crown sat on her dark locks. The High king chose a brown tunic, with Narnia's crest on it, black breaches, boots and leather jacket over top and of course his gold crown matching his hair.
As soon as they reached the bottom of the stairs, the lackey announced the next couple, King Caspian the Seafarer and Queen Lucy the valiant. The young man matched the High king in his ceremonial garbs, yet instead of wearing brown, he chose a dark forest green, while his lady wore a beautiful sea green dress, with a sweet heart neck showing a little bit of cleavage ( not mentioning the amount of arguing she went for with her brother to allow her to wear the dress, while Caspian still had to keep his mind in check), the neckline was encrusted with gems down to the middle of her torso till the end of the bodice, the sleeves were very much the same as Susan's, part silk par see through yet her skirt was cut in the middle, giving off a more puffy air to the silk. She discarded her crown already and went for nothing but her auburn locks horning her head.
Edmund and Annabelle soon followed, the lady herself wore a gorgeous green gown with sleeves cascading down her elbows, yet her dress was made of two pieces, the main green silk dress, then an overtop tunic made of gold and green patterns that flowed to the floor. The color itself enhanced her gorgeous eyes, yet as she was not very fond of dancing, decided to wear her hair up, with an ornament on her shiny raven hair, while Edmund wore black, all black tunic with silver linings and black breeches black boots, and black leather jacket, the whole outwear brought out the dark handsomeness that the just king already had.
"I am so going to dance tonight." Lucy said with her sweet cheerful voice, and just like that, the rest of the room was brought out of the awed spell. Merry music soon picked up and Lucy like promised, dragged a poor willing Caspian to the middle of the room, joining the other dancing figures.
Edmund, knowing full well what Annabelle wanted, led her to the balcony, which had the most splendid view of the sea, while the stars reflected on the dancing waves. The moon still reserved her great appearance for the next night, as it was only the beginning of the lunar month.
"I still can't believe that this is not a dream." Anne sighed, leaning on marble stone.
"Neither can I." Edmund answered gently, looking at his beloved with adoration, as the slight breeze made the unruly strands falling from her hair dance gently.
"Almost a year passed since my arrival in Narnia, that day when I boarded the plane with my father, all I was expecting was to go visit my mother."
"You never talked about your past."
"I think that now it is fairly time that I accept the facts as they are." She said, not taking her eyes from the breathtaking scenery "Once upon a time, I lived with my family, back in France, we had our little home, nothing fancy really, I still remember that small tree house that my father, Benjamin, built. We always used to climb there, me and my brother, we are five years apart actually, and our relationship was very similar to Lucy and Peter's. Yet just before the war began, my mother learned she was with a child, twins actually, as she grew to love them even more, on the fifth month, she got into a bad chute, none of the babies made it out alive, she blamed herself for it, and her relationship with my father fell apart, and soon they divorced. But still my mother Celeste, swam into depression, and my father was obliged to take us in, raised both his children alone, he too felt the loss, yet he maintained a brave front for us, took us in, then we settled in England, while mother stayed with her mother's family in France. Soon enough the war began, and we received a message that told us that our mother was gravely injured, and was on her death bed." Anne paid no heed to the tears cascading down her cheeks, or the trembling quality her voice took, no she bravely poured her heart to the person she cherished most, he deserved nothing less.
"We, me and my father, couldn't bear staying in England for another second, for she was above all my mother, and my father still loved her deeply, as soon as we took the plane, I closed my eyes, and then the next thing I know I was in Narnia."
"What about your brother?" the just king asked softly.
"He was in America continuing his studies, and I think that with the war, our letter must not have reached him."
"Come here," Edmund soothed as he drew his lady in his strong embrace. And she finally let all her sorrows go, knowing that her mother was probably dead, not having any clue about her brother or her father's whereabouts, losing all that she held dear, yet now she knew that another destiny awaited her, a much grander one in Narnia, she thought about her first day, her meeting with the Pevensies, how she was awed by their presence, the first time she saw a faun, how she almost fainted when a mouse began talking to her. The silly crush Caspian had on her and his oh so charming attitude and how he grew into the man he now was, Peter's over protectiveness even though she was not related to him, Susan's patient nature, how she showed her the way a Lady should act, how she taught her etiquette, dancing, even archery, when once upon a time, she could kill someone accidentally by just holding the bow, no arrows included. She could also recall Lucy's friendliness, how she treated her like a sister from day one, her cheerful nature, she became more than a confident or a friend, she taught her how to be strong, she forged her into a warrior, she still remembered how she used to throw up at the sight of blood, but now she held that passion, the will to defend what you believed in. And above all, she never expected to find love, raw passionate love, the one that consumes you, the one that you could sacrifice anything for. She never believed she could feel so strongly towards a man, but now, cocooned in the just king's embrace, she had no doubt that she loved him. Plain and simple, she earned for his touch, bathed in his scent, craved for his kiss, he was everything that she yearned for, strength, loyalty, wit, mystery, tenderness, and above all, he felt as strongly towards her as she felt towards him, if not more. And now she knew, she was finally blessed with a home.
Caspian was in a foul mood, he felt this raging anger building up inside of him, his hands twitching while he fought to keep himself in check, but he had too many murderous thoughts at the moment, and it was seriously challenging his self restraint, he wanted to kill someone, plain and simple. And Lucy was not making it easy either with her innocent and clueless divine charm, she had no idea she was an enchantress, especially in that gown, and the men didn't make their admiration a secret either, each of their lustful gaze following her across the room. The only reason they didn't act on it or ask her for a dance yet was because of the intimidating above six feet figure flanking her side. And By the scowls the telmarine king was throwing their way, they had every right to gulp nervously, no one wanted to anger the always smiling king, No One.
"Oh Caspian it's a celebration, smile."
"You really had to wear that gown Lucy?" he groaned as he tucked her to his side, afraid that she'll wander off alone, amongst this herd of leering men, he knew she could handle herself, but still.
"Why? don't you like it?" she asked sweetly, feigning innocence. Caspian took back his earlier statement, she was not absolutely clueless about her charm sadly, and she more than anything knew her effect on him especially.
"I do like it, if only every other man here was blind."
"Whatever." She said rolling her eyes "Look there's Adam."
The Prince had gone back to his country right after battle, to settle matters of peace and the various treaties conducted between the three great countries, hence Narnia, Archenland and Calormene. Right after the latest defeat, the Tisroc was more than eager to sign a peace treaty between his neighbors, the man, as his daughter once said before, was fair and just, insecure at times but still a great emperor, when not enchanted of course. The man sent his daughter to represent his country in the negotiations, and she proved herself more than worthy of the task. Putting her difference aside, she managed to speak on neutral grounds with the prince, even though she still hated him, she did not loathe the sight of him as she once did, but still she hated him. She even earned her people different privileges, more than a defeated country could hope for. The just king represented Narnia, of course, for no one could best him in political matters, and if he wasn't such a considerate and fair king, all that Sarah claimed for the Calormene would have been nothing but a dream, but still, thankfully he was.
"Adam! It's been too long how have you been?" Lucy asked the young man, while he chuckled at her Luciness.
"Haven't changed a bit I see Lu."
"It's been only a month, not a year."
"I doubt you would change even if a decade began to pass."
"I highly doubt it myself."
"Caspian, how have you been?" Adam asked as he patted the king's shoulder.
"Peachy." He answered sarcastically, still glaring at the reeling eyes. And if Adam eyed Lucy in any inappropriate manner, his eyes would have already been pulled fast out of their sockets.
"Judging by Lucy's glorious Beauty tonight, I have but one thing to say, Good Luck mate." He said in fake sympathy, he himself couldn't deny he liked the view tonight.
"What I need tonight, Adam, is not Luck but self restraint." He retorted through clenched teeth.
"Glad you have it then dear." Lucy said, wounding her arm around his, and dragging him god knew where, while he only rolled his eyes.
Lucy couldn't deny she loved the teasing, and above all Caspian's dangerous air and possessiveness , it was quite an attractive sight, if not for her own word, then the sighs coming from the other ladies were proof enough she guessed.
The healthy chatter around the room slowly faded down as the high king cleared his throat. But still Lucy didn't settle down, too caught up in whatever endeavor she had in mind with Caspian trailing right behind.
"Now if my dear youngest sister would settle down for a second, I would like to say a few things." The oldest Pevensie said, smirking at her.
"But of course Peter who I am to deny you the chance to present the speech you spent the whole day writing." She retorted, if he was to embarrass her, then she would do the same, and she also delighted at the faint blush creeping on his cheeks before he once again cleared his throat, just as Edmund and Annabelle came back to the room, smiling.
"Anyway, dear Narnians, Allies, We have gathered here, after a month of mourning and grieving to celebrate our great victory, we have been challenged through tough times, seeds of doubt and fear were implanted, but still we remained strong, undivided, and we've won, those who died in this battle would always be remembered as great warriors, every time I look at each scar I got from the battlefield, I feel no anger, nor do I feel resentment, but what I do feel is pride, I am more than proud of fighting for my country, protecting every cherished life with my strength. For to play but one part into bringing peace to my people is a much grander price anyone could ask for, and I believe that everyone who fought beside me feels the same. So I propose a toast for Peace, for the love that bounds our country, for Narnia."
"For Narnia!" the whole room cheered, each one drinking from their own cup, while those close to Peter felt proud of their golden brother, there was no doubt he was the high king, even if he rehearsed his speech for far too long.
"Now before any of us could forget our names, Caspian, I believe would like to make an announcement, if he was still sober enough that is." Peter said teasingly.
"Very funny your Majesty." He retorted, "But now that you're at it, I indeed have something to say." As he took Peter's place on the raised platform, he spoke loud and surely.
"A long time ago, I was but a fugitive Prince, I heard tales about the kings and queens of Old, how they were fearless in battle, and wise in their decisions, just with their people, and then I met them, I actually met Peter first, as he tried to drive a sword through me, my first thoughts were, damn they were young, and yet after spending so much time with them, now I do not see them as legendary mythical heroes, but heroes that I could call family, I gained two brothers, who would go through thick and thin for me, in Susan I found a gentle soul, but still she was pretty scary if you were ever late, and finally in Lucy I found a confident, I met her when she was but twelve, and yet she held more wisdom, more intelligence, more fierceness than any grown man could have, I found a great friend, who stood by my side no matter what, yet what I failed to notice, was the woman she was inside, that beautiful soul that came to flourish with the years I spent by her side, and here I am now, looking into the eyes of that same woman, and still cannot believe the adoration in them." At that he turned towards her, taking her into his gentle gaze "And what I failed to notice once again, and I cannot believe my own density, was how madly I'm in love with my best friend."
He made his way towards his valiant queen, who by now had tears freely flowing from her eyes, he loved her. Caspian loved her. After so many years of feeling unwanted, now he confessed his feelings in front of a very large crowd, the man that was her confident, her man, her safe haven in dark times. The tears were from happiness relief and most of all Love, god how much she loved him, just when she thought she couldn't fall any deeper, he knelt on one knee, then took out the most gorgeous ring she ever saw. It was made of two diamond incrusted white gold bands joined in the middle by a large square aquamarine, its color the most refined sea blue, and then when he spoke again, her heart almost couldn't take it anymore.
"Our relationship is by far not normal, and we skipped the whole get to know each other better part, for the simple reason that we already had no secrets between us, and these few months spent courting you were enough proof that I want you stay by my side always, so Lucy Pevensie would you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my queen and marry me?" he asked gently in his deep voice, his warm brown eyes a soft caress straight o her heart. Trying to compose herself, Lucy finally took a deep breath and gave him a tearful smile.
"Do you promise to always be there for me?" she asked him.
"Yes."
"Do you promise to not look at any other woman beside me?"
"Look look or look?"
"Caspian!"
"Just kidding, yes I promise."
"Do you promise to get over your snoring?" at that she heard several snorts from her audience.
"Yes I will try."
"Then, yes! I will marry you!" she exclaimed joyfully jumping in his embrace, they were all showered by congratulations and applause, and yet they were still focused on each other.
"I'm looking forward to our life together." He whispered as he looked into her lovely blue green eyes, sliding the ring on her fourth finger.
"As do I" And with that they sealed their engagement by a deep tender kiss, that left even Peter smiling, for he wouldn't have entrusted his baby sister with no one else.
The last thought that came to Lucy's mind at the end of the ball was that she truly was Blessed.
"Guess now the council will finally get their wish. Ow, what was that for Lu?"
"Caspian my siblings are just there!"
I'm crying right noow, and no this not the last chapter, there's still an epilogue.
