"Honey, please talk to me," pleaded Regina looking over at Henry as she drove him to school the following morning. Henry sat in the passenger seat next to her and continued staring blankly out the window. "You didn't say anything at breakfast this morning…"
She waited for him to respond, but when he didn't she continued, "Fine, The Silent Treatment. That's alright. I'm used to talking by myself."
Regina searched for things to say as they passed the usual corners, occasionally stopping at the familiar stoplights along the way. "Robin and I are dating again…"
"…I'm sorry."
"I'm not sorry. Robin and I finally have our lives straightened out and we can finally be… what's the word, an item?"
"No, I mean… I'm sorry that you don't have magic anymore. I broke it. I broke Storybrooke's magic, Mom."
"Oh Henry," Regina said as she pulled up and parked in front of Henry's school.
Henry continued with his apology, but as he went on his voice cracked and tears fell from his eyes, "I'm sorry for tricking you and Emma. I'm sorry for running away. I'm sorry for not telling you about my magic… and I'm sorry for thinking I could bring my father back from the dead. I'm so sorry, Mom!"
Henry leaned over to his mother for a nurturing hug and she gladly received him as he continued sobbing. "Henry, you're going to be fine. We're all going to be fine. You're here and safe with me now and that's all that matters. Besides, you remember this town as it was before Emma arrived. It has survived without magic before."
"How do I explain that to Grandpa?" Henry cried, his voice muffled in Regina's dress shirt.
"David?"
"Mr. Gold."
"Oh," said Regina, wondering the same thing. She wondered how he was handling the situation. "Well, don't you worry about Mr. Gold. I was planning on talking to him later anyways. The only thing you should worry about now is making sure you're doing well in school."
Henry gave his mother one last squeeze as she kissed the top of his head. He gathered his belongings and opened the car door.
"And call me when you're ready to be picked up, ok?" she requested, to which he nodded acknowledging her. Before he left, he remembered something. He halted his exit out of the car and turned to face his mother again, "Mom?"
"Yes, Henry?" replied Regina, smiling to him as she wiped away the rogue tears on Henry's face. She plucked a few lint balls from off his school jacket as she waited for his response.
"I need some money."
"What for?"
"I was planning on going to the library after school… to pay back Belle for the missing books I had borrowed."
"Oh ok, here…" said Regina as she reached for her purse and handed him a few twenties. "That should be enough to cover both books and lunch today. I'm assuming that I'll be picking you up at the library after school, then?"
"Yeah, I'll text you when I'm done paying for the books."
"Ok, honey," she said, reaching over and giving her son one last kiss on the cheek. "I love you."
"I love you too, Mom," said Henry as he exited the car and headed up the sidewalk onto the school grounds. Regina waited until her son was completely inside the building before turning back around onto the main road to get back to Main Street.
She drove for a little bit until she came upon Mr. Gold's Pawn Shop. She parked her car down the street from the shop and got out to enter the building. She walked up to the shop's door and proceeded to open it and was shocked to find it locked. She saw that the sign on the door said 'closed' but in her experience working with him 'closed' never really meant closed. She peered through the glass panels of the door and seeing that the shop truly looked inhabited, she searched around the building for Gold's car. And when she couldn't find it she thought, it's not like him to be late for work.
The wind started to pick up. The chill made her give up her wanting to speak with Gold and so she decided to pop into Granny's instead for a quick bite to eat before heading back to her office. She headed toward the diner and walked around the corner when she noticed Emma's yellow VW bug parked in front of the eating establishment. From what she could see from outside, Emma and Snow were having a heated altercation so curiosity more so than breakfast pulled Regina into the diner.
"…Families stick together Emma. Neal's part of our family. You should of at least have given us the choice on whether or not we could see him…" Snow replied.
"I'm with your mother on this one Swan," said Killian from the back of the diner throwing darts. "You weren't the only one he was loved by."
Regina entered the diner and silence fell upon the upset individuals. Noticing that nobody was talking, Regina chimed, "I'm sorry, was I interrupting something important?"
"No," said Emma.
"Good because I wanted to talk to both of you about Henry… and about magic here in Storybrooke," Regina said.
"All of us? You should probably talk to Gold about that," remarked Snow.
"You see, I just came from there and surprisingly," Regina replied as she made her way toward the booth where Snow and Emma were sitting and sat down, "he's not at work this morning."
"So what? He's not at work. It's not like it's the end of the world," Emma cynically replied.
"I've known Mr. Gold for a really long time, longer than you Ms. Swan. Yes, he's lived without magic before, but he was under my curse. He woke up from the curse coincidentally after you arrived and it was only a very short time after that that he immediately brought magic back into Storybrooke, remember?"
"I remember," acknowledged Emma. "So what do we do now? It wasn't until Gold took that gold egg from me that he went off to bring magic back, and I'm pretty sure I destroyed the last dragon in Storybrooke."
"We have to figure out this new source of magic and why Henry was nominated to be the town's magical light switch."
"Actually, I think I can tell you," inserted Snow. Both Emma and Regina turned and looked at Snow with astonished faces. Snow continued, "I mean, at least I have a theory that could explain why Henry controls Storybrooke's magic."
"Well, go on," insisted an interested Killian, who stopped his solo game of darts to join in on the conversation. He stood next to the booth as they all seemed to lean in, eager to hear what Snow had to say.
"Regina, when we added the ingredients to enact the Dark Curse bringing us back to Storybrooke a second time, would the kinds of ingredients influence how the curse is broken?"
"Yes, of course but the person who casts the curse has the most influence dictating that."
Snow went on, "And wasn't it Rumplestiltskin who originally created the spell for you to enact the first time?"
"Yes, but how does that involve Henry?" asked Regina.
"Yeah, Mom, where are you going with this?" Emma added.
"Well… think about it. Rumplestiltskin created the Dark Curse so that you," Snow said looking at her daughter, "could break it. And yes, I casted the curse the second time, but it was Regina who gathered the ingredients adding her own touch to the curse… it also didn't help that Zelena threw in the memory-loss, but I digress... I think it was Regina who influenced how the curse could be broken the second time, just like Rumplestiltskin did with the first one. Not that you knew it at the time, of course, because we all lost our memories and wanted to get them back to stop Zelena, but it was her True Love's Kiss to Henry that broke the curse and brought our memories back."
"Yes, but how is it that Henry halted all magic in Storybrooke?" Killian asked.
"When Henry stopped believing, it severed Hades' main power source, but not completely," Regina speculated, adding on to Snow's theory. "Hades was still able to teleport from different points parts of Storybrooke, even after. When I tried to destroy the god with my magic, nothing happened. Meaning… that Henry has more than just the Heart of the Truest Believer, he is the heart of Storybrooke. At least, I've only noticed through this second curse."
"I suppose that makes sense. He's related to the most powerful people here in Storybrooke. Not only does he tie us all together, he forces us to work together. Meaning that his magic transcends through us all… maybe perhaps dictates our power."
"But how come magic still worked for Hades? Or Hercules? Or even Elsa for that matter?" Snow wondered.
"Because Hades, Hercules and Elsa are all gods living amongst us and as Regina pointed out, the source of their magic is different than our own," pointed out Killian.
"So the next questions is, how do we get Henry to believe in magic again?" Emma thought out loud.
"You don't suppose his book could work again?" Snow considered to the group.
"It's worth a shot, but I don't think it can be guaranteed to work a second time. Yes, the book symbolizes hope and magic, but I think in order for it to work he has to believe in it. He believed in you, Emma, the first time because he trusted you and was sure of his beliefs then; of his belief in you. With the whole loss of his father recently, I'm afraid he's not in the receptive mind-set to believe in anything at this moment. This is going to take some time," believed Regina.
"Well, I'm just glad that we all seem to be handling this absence of magic quite well," Snow breathed out of relief.
"Yeah, all of us here," stated Regina, as she looked out through the Diner's glass window at Gold's shop.
Hope you all have a lovely holiday today and that this chapter finds you happy, healthy, thankful, "stuffed" and well. I just wanted to let you all know that I am eternally grateful every day for each and every one of you. Thank you!
*Side note: Sorry if you were confused by the timeline and why Gold wasn't at his shop. I tried to make it clear when Belle asked in the previous chapter what time it was, and here in this chapter Regina is taking Henry to school at about the same time. Because school typically starts about 7:30/8:00am, right? That's why he wasn't at the shop like usual. He was either at home with Belle or at the car dealership with her.
Will be posting another chapter tomorrow. See you then!
