Due to Fang's reappearance, Max lets her curiosity lead her right into his trap to take her back to the School. While she is there, she is operated on and granted many new powers. Jeb stays with her the entire time, training her to use the powers to her advantage as well as to learn how to control them. However, back in Forks, Jacob finds out that Max has gone missing once again. The last time she disappeared, she claimed that she was out because of her mom, but he suspected a different story. Now that she is gone once again, he goes to Seth's in case he knew where she was.

I was soaring over the wired fence once again. Ignoring the shouts and cries for me to come back, I kept flapping my wings quickly, trying to get out of the School.

I was getting a little too comfortable in that building. After all, it had been four months full of training and surgeries. I was starting to accept being an experiment, even enjoying it. Not anymore.

Once the Whitecoats had told me that I would start training outside a month ago, that was when I started to plot out my escape for the nth time. How ridiculous and naive they were to think that I wouldn't try to get away.

I navigated my way back home, enjoying the breeze against my face. My wings and body were much stronger now; more developed. I felt like I could take on the world. However, once a few minutes passed, I realized I had an impending and pressing challenge to take on – my family and friends. After all, I had been gone for the past four months without any form of communication to them to tell them that I was alright.

Suddenly, I was filled with guilt. Mom and Ella must have been worried sick – Jacob probably was going out of his mind. Wait, what was I talking about? Jacob doesn't care. This imprint thing must have gone away by now. I couldn't feel any pain due to all of the surgeries, but how would Jake feel? Was he hurting?

And what about Seth? What about Bella? I just left them, without a word. I mean, I couldn't help it. It's not like I could just ask Jeb, "hey, can I call my friends and family and tell them that I'm at an experimental hospital and I'll be back in roughly half a year, give or take?"

And then there was Jeb. Over the time that I had been at the School, I had become his number one priority and experiment. With all of the attention that he had given me, I felt like we had almost reconnected our father-daughter bond. Of course, these feelings had blinded me from realizing that I had another life back in Forks, but I felt like things were back to normal with Jeb. He reminded me of my old life, before I got back involved with the School.

Oh, God, now the School knew where I lived! They'll come to Forks and demand that I come back with them or else they'll hurt the people around me! Crap, what am I going to do? How could I have been so oblivious to all of this damage in front of me? I can't keep thinking about this. I'm going crazy.

Man, what am I going to do?

oooOOOooo

I arrived on the front step of my house, nervous and palms sweaty. How was Mom going to react? Would she welcome me back? Would she slaughter me? Maybe I should just move to Mexico now and change my name to Santiago Puta.

Hesitantly, I knocked on one of the French doors three times. It was silent after that, making me think that nobody was home.

However, the white door swung open to reveal a sleepy Ella. Her eyes widened when she saw that it was me. "Oh my God, Max!" she yelled, enveloping me in a tight hug. "Where have you been? We've been worried sick!"

"Oh, Ella," I muttered, burying my face in her neck. "I've missed you."

"Where did you go? Why did you leave?"

"I didn't mean to leave," I whispered. "I was at the School."

Ella pulled away, her eyes growing even bigger. "The School?"

I nodded. "Yeah. I was there this entire time."

"Was Jeb there?"

"Yep. He was the head honcho for me. I'm much stronger, but I have a feeling I got away just as they were about to do something bad."

"Ella? Who's there?" My mom came down the stairs, rubbing her eyes.

"Me," I said, making her look up.

"Max?"

"It's me, Mom," I smiled. She ran to me, engulfing me in a hug that I had experienced from Ella just moments before.

"God, where have you been?"

"The School," I said, wrapping my arms across her back. "Fang took me."

"Fang?" she asked, pulling back and holding my shoulders. "I thought Fang – "

"Yeah, me too," I said, scratching my head awkwardly. "But he came back. Not to revive our friendship, or anything. It was to take me to Death Valley."

"Come inside," she ushered, taking me by the arm to the kitchen. Ella followed, closing the door. We sat down at the dinner table and she said, "Okay, so start from the beginning."

oooOOOooo

"Wow," Ella said. She was the first to speak. "I can't believe Fang's such a jackass."

"Ella!" I looked over to my mom. However, she didn't chasten Ella on her language.

"I agree," she muttered. "What a jackass."

"Okay, Fang's just not the person that I thought he would be. But can we focus here? How am I supposed to go back to my normal life now that the School knows where I am? What am I supposed to say to everybody when they ask about my sudden reappearance?"

"That's a good question," Mom said, thinking. "Should we say that I decided to send you off to boarding school?"

"For four months starting in the middle of the year?" I pointed out.

"How about we say that you decided to pursue your childhood dreams of becoming the next Hannah Montana?" Ella suggested.

"Sure, like everybody's going to believe that," I said sarcastically.

"Does anybody know that Jeb's your father?" Mom asked.

I shook my head slowly. "Other than Bella and Edward, everybody else thinks that my dad's just out of the picture."

"Just say that you had to stay with Jeb for a while," she continued. "He got really sick and wanted you there."

"That's a good idea," I said.

"Wait, am I the only one who realizes that you told Bella and Edward everything but not Jacob?" Ella asked suddenly.

"Why would I tell Jacob? It's not like he cares."

"Jacob's your mate, of course he cares!"

"I'm sure the imprint wore off or something, because I didn't feel any pain at all while I was gone."

"Well, you were in a hospital full of painkillers and meds," Mom said. "They could have dulled your pain. Or maybe modified you to have a high pain tolerance."

"Yeah, but –"

"Look, Max, it's late. You need to rest up. You don't have to go back to school tomorrow, but I'm going to call the administration and tell them what happened. As long as you pass your finals, I'm sure I can convince them not to hold you back your senior year."

"Okay," I said, standing up. I saw Ella trying to hide her yawn behind her hand, but I already saw. "Sorry, Ella. You need to go to sleep, too."

"What? Mom, do I have to go to school tomorrow?"

"You want to skip a very fun filled day of educational learning?" Mom fake-gasped.

"Mom, please. Let's be real here. My sister just came back after four months of no communication and had us all worried sick. Now she's here and safe and I want to spend as much time with her as possible so we can catch up. And trust me, we have a lot to catch up on," she said, looking at me with a knowing glance.

"Well…"

"And you should take tomorrow off with us. I know you've been worried the most. You to two new wrinkles here." Ella pointed to her forehead.

"What?" Mom's hands flew to her face.

"Let's worry about that tomorrow, on our day off," I said, guiding them both upstairs.

oooOOOooo

"And so I told Brady, no, I can't because my mom's not home and he got super-mad. Like, his face just turned red with anger and I was just like, woah son, calm down and so now it's been three days and we haven't talked since."

"Brady's just going through his phase," I reassured her, wrapping an arm around her as we relaxed on the sofa. "It's like when a girl's on her period. It's the wolf-version of PMS."

"I don't know," she sighed, sinking down. "Brady's been a jerk and Colin's just always so nice and supportive of me. He doesn't show any sign of wolf-PMS."

"Give Brady some time. You don't want to be known as "that girl."

"That girl?"

"You know, the one who breaks up with the guy the second he shows a little anger and runs off to the safer option."

"Oh, so like you?"

I gasped. "What?"

"Don't try to deny it," she scoffed. "Jacob still had the tiniest, most miniscule crush on Bella after he imprinted on you so you decided to run to Seth."

"I –" I stopped, realizing that she had a point. "But I don't think of Seth as somebody I'd date or something. Not like you. And I am much wiser beyond my years, so I can handle this. And you're, what, eleven?"

"Thirteen," she corrected. "And you are not wiser beyond your years. Fang got you to go to the park by just touching your face."

"You're a little bitch, you know that?" I whispered to her, making her laugh.

"Girls, lunch is ready!" Mom called, placing the plates on the table.

"Yummy!" I cheered, jumping up. On the dinner table were three serving plates and three larger plates. One plate had edamame, another had bread rolls, and another had some strawberries and watermelon.

Right before I was about to dig in, the doorbell rang. "Ella, would you get that?" Mom asked from the bathroom.

"My hands are occupied!" she yelled. She looked at me.

"Fine, I'll get it," I grumbled. I padded to the door and opened it.

"Max?" Bella asked, looking surprised. "Where –"

"Long story," I sighed. "Come in."

oooOOOooo

"So yeah, but I'm here now, so it's all good," I replied, forking up some edamame.

Bella finished off her bread roll. "Wow. And you flew all the way here?"

I nodded. "It wasn't hard, especially after all of the surgeries."

"Did you tell Jacob about this?"

I shook my head. "No, not yet. I mean, I know he'll find out sooner or later. He's probably in school right now, so I'm not going to go over to his house or anything. Speaking of which, why aren't you in school?"

"Your mom called in and told the school that you would be coming back, so I brought over some of the work that you'll need to do. I had a study hall this period, so I just drove over. They didn't tell me it was for you, they just told me to bring it over here so I assumed it was Ella's." She leaned over and pulled a rather thick pile of papers out of her bag and two textbooks.

"Wow, I just don't get a break, do I?" I muttered, taking the materials.

"It's not all due tomorrow," she said quickly. "There's some practice sheets and stuff inside so that you won't be totally lost when you come back."

"Thanks, Bella," I said, smiling at her.

"No problem," she replied. "Thanks for the food, by the way, Ms. Martinez. It was really great."

"Anytime, dear," my mom said.

"Well, I need to be going," she said, glancing at the time on her phone. "I need to be at school in ten minutes. It was great seeing you, Max."

I said the same and she scooped up her backpack and slung it over her shoulder. I walked her to the door and went back to the kitchen.

"I wonder how many times I'll need to tell the story of how my dad had a "cancer scare" and I had to stay in South Carolina for a few months," I said, settling back down in my chair.

"People are curious," Mom said, finishing off the edamame. "I would be too, if I were in their shoes."

I shrugged, sitting back and finishing my bread.

oooOOOooo

Jake's POV

"Jacob!" I heard. I turned and saw Bella coming up to me.

"Hey," I said.

"Hey, have you seen Seth?"

I frowned. "Seth? No. Why are you looking for him?" She walked with me as I parked my motorcycle in the garage.

"I needed to tell him something, but I guess I'll just wait and go over to his house later," she shrugged.

"Yeah," I said. "Do you want to come inside and grab a bite to eat?"

"Sure," she said, laughing. "I'm just getting invited inside to eat all day."

"What do you mean?"

"It's nothing," she said, waving me off. "How was your track meet?"

"Boring," I said truthfully. I joined track this past season to get a gym credit and it turns out, being a werewolf had its perks. I was one of the fastest runners on the team, for both sprinting and long distance. "I had three events right at the beginning of the meet and then my last event was the very last one of the entire meet. I was just sitting around most of the time."

"I should come watch and cheer you on," she suggested.

"Really? You'd be bored too, especially since you don't know anyone at my school."

"I'll come to whenever you guys face my high school," she said. "That way, it won't be as boring. Anyways, I'll have Edward with me, so no need to worry."

My face fell a little as I opened the door. "Edward?"

She laughed, following me inside. "Do you guys still not get along?"

"I try," I defend. "I really do try. I think it's Eddie that has the issue here, not me."

"Edward tries," she said. "He just doesn't like the way you smell."

"How do I smell? Like the great outdoors?"

"Well, right now, you smell like a mixture of the "great outdoors" and sweat."

I shrugged, unzipping the front of my maroon and white track jacket. "Want some pasta?"

"Pasta sounds great," she agreed. "Where's Billy?"

"Out fishing with some of his friends."

"Gotcha."

I cooked the pasta and served it into two plates, grabbing forks and walking them to the table. We sat at the table, keeping a constant chatter and eating our food. Suddenly, Bella's phone rang.

"Hello, Seth?" I looked up. "Yeah. I was going to go over… I'm at Jake's right now. Yeah. I'm telling you, I'm not lying. I swear, go visit her right now. I know, it's unbelievable! For her dad or something… she should be home, but I'd text her or something before you go over… No, are you kidding? She'll be thrilled to see you. I already visited, so I'll pass. Oh, did he? Tell him I'll be there soon. Yeah, sure, no problem!"

Bella hung up and stood. "Is there a problem?" I asked.

"No, that was just Seth. He told me that my dad wants me home for something, he didn't mention. But I have to go. Thanks for the pasta, though. It was great."

"It was nothing," I grinned. "But, uh, who were you and Seth talking about?"

"What?" She slid her arms through the sleeves of her jacket.

"You guys kept talking about some girl? Who was it?"

She stopped, looking at me with a surprised look. "Oh, didn't you hear? Max is back."
