This is a short chapter but it helps tell the story of how Johanna helped Peeta from losing his mind forever.
She talks to Johanna for a few hours today. Beetee sits wringing his hands. Johanna has shunned him which has broken his resolve.
"She'll come back to you." I tell him. "She knows where her heart belongs."
…
I sit in the dankness. I'm unable to control the tremor in my hand. The venom has taken control of my nervous system.
"Pssst…"
"Who's there?"
"Johanna."
"What do you remember."
I sit on this for a moment. Memories are jumbled together. Trackerjackers. Love, I love someone.
"Love."
"Katniss, you love Katniss you have to come back to her. She's waiting on you ."
"But she's a mutt."
"No...think, think really hard, you were kissing on the beach remember? Remember the arena?"
My mind begins to flood. I remember touching her, I remember her laying beside me in my arms on a train, I'm unsure as to what is true. The two women who are in my mind don't match. I don't know what is real. I don't know if I can believe Johanna. She's one of them.
"She loves you. Try to think. I think about my home. The trees, and the pine. The smells, it keeps me from dying. I know what it is I love."
…
Beetee nods as though he knows. As though the reminder strengthened him in some way. Eventually Katniss emerges from Johanna's room.
"They're admitting her to the psych ward for the time being. She wants to see you Beetee. She seemed to need to see you."
He smiles. Happy to once again be taken in.
Katniss and I leave the hospital. Instead of going to the hotel we decide to go to the beach. We take off our shoes, Katniss and I are both wearing shorts. Her shirt is sleeveless baring her arms. We walk along the shoreline. For a while we only hold hands, then she nudges me with her hip, my leg weak gives way and I fall into the surf. She hurls herself upon me. Smiling, I splash her and roll over on top of her then I bend down to kiss her.
…..
"I need you."
She kisses me. Not the somber kisses which I had received but with warmth and deepness. I can feel her breathing me in. I take her in my arms.
…
Good memories. I smile down at her. Her gray eyes are happy, but clouded with tears.
"We're all wet." I say to her.
"Let's go home and dry off."
As I stand up she stands and watches the gentle surf, she runs out into the warm water swimming. I run up to her afraid she may be trying to drown, but she's floating on her back smiling up at the blue sky. I put my arms around her as she floats.
"It's a piece of Finnick and Annie. They swam here."
I only nod in reply. Our eyes both cloud in sadness thinking of our friends who we lost.
"It's always been you and me hasn't it? Since we were eleven. We alway protected on another."
She smiles a bit.
"Paint this." She says. "Paint Annie and Finnick."
I smile and feel warmness in my heart.
"Yes. Let's go."
We walk in our soggy clothes back to the hotel. Dripping all the way. We remove our clothes once we get to our room and Katniss begins to shiver. Her hair still saturated. I take her into my arms.
"Let's go home tomorrow. Back to Twelve. Our garden is being so neglected, and our meadow is lonely." She says.
I nod. The idea of home is amazing beyond words.
….
I close my eyes to sleep. The floor is cold but my body is so weary I don't care. I try to be like Johanna and think of home. I squeeze my eyes waiting for the first memory to come.
"Who knows the Valley Song?" The teacher says.
The girl with braids raises her hand before anyone can register.
"Katniss Everdeen."
They say when her father sings the mockingjays listens.
"Down in the valley, the valley so lowHang your head over, hear the wind blowHear the wind blow, dear, hear the wind blow;Hang your head over, hear the wind blow.Roses love sunshine, violets love dew,Angels in Heaven know I love you,Know I love you, dear, know I love you,Angels in Heaven know I love you.If you don't love me, love whom you please,Throw your arms 'round me, give my heart ease,Give my heart ease, dear, give my heart ease,Throw your arms 'round me, give my heart ease.Build me a castle, forty feet high;So I can see her as she rides by,As she rides by, dear, as she rides by,So I can see her as she rides by. Write me a letter,'Send it by mail,Send it in care of Birmingham Jail,Birmingham Jail, love, Birmingham Jail,Send it in care of Birmingham Jail She sings, her voice loud and bright.
My eyes sting with tears. The mockingjays stop to listen. The melody lovely. The girl lovely. The girl I will love for the rest of my life.
….
I ask her to sing the Valley Song to me as I hold her. As she sings I picture her laying in the meadow naked in my arms. Her voice lovely and bright. Tears sting my eyes. The moment I heard her sing was the moment she had me forever.
