So I got this chapter ready on Thursday but unfortunately, I had no internet connection for a while so I apologise for that.

Carlisle's POV
It had taken a lot of convincing when I advised my family that they should go home because they had already been at the hospital for a few hours and it was now morning. I guess it was rather hypocritical of me to say that though, since I refused the offer when I was told that I could get the day off work. I had my day planned; treat my patients and visit Jasper when I'm free. If I took the day off, worry would be on my mind until it is guaranteed that Jasper would be fine. Being in the hospital eases my mind a little because at least I'm not far from Jasper when he wakes up and I still have patients to take my mind of him for a while.
Esme had claimed that as soon as our children were fed and taught, they would be back here to see how Jasper is doing. Rosalie was the difficult one though, but I didn't blame her. She had refused to do anything today other than sit by Jasper's side but I ended up negotiating with her by saying that if she does what Esme asks of her today, then I'll allow her to visit Jasper as soon as he wakes up.
Speaking of waking up, I had warned Eleazar and the nurses looking after him about what Jasper could be like if he wakes up in an unfamiliar place; especially with people he doesn't know and explained his current situation. They all seemed amazed with how he had managed to survive the wild on his own as just a child with no experience and even more surprised at the chances of being found by the family with his sister in it. It's stories like Jasper's that encourage people to believe in miracles; that is also why I believe that Jasper will make it.
It did still worry me how he hadn't woken up yet but going by what his body has gone though, he must be so exhausted that he still can't find the strength to open his eyes.
I sat with him during my break. He was still lying unconscious in the hospital bed but he sounded peaceful as I couldn't hear him wheeze like I had before. It was a good sign and meant that he was finding it easier to breathe although it may have just been the machine taking its affect.
I swept one of his golden locks out of his eyes and tucked it behind his ear. As I did so, I heard a curtain slide open which usually meant a nurse came to check up on him but instead, it was Eleazar.
"You still haven't eaten?" He questioned.
I couldn't. The more time I spent getting something to eat, the less time I had with Jasper and knowing my luck, he would choose to wake up as soon as I leave. After not answering his question, Eleazar spoke again.
"Are you sure you should be working today? I know it's not really any of my business but you haven't been yourself today and that's completely understandable but patients need somebody whose mind is in the right place but yours isn't right now" he noted.
I knew that he was just trying to be honest about it but he didn't understand. I had to be in this hospital. Jasper was here, and this is where I work.
"I can do my job, Eleazar. I just don't want him to wake up alone and my family aren't going to be here until later on" I explained to him.
I didn't miss the sympathetic look that Eleazar gave me. I guess it was because he wasn't used to seeing me like this. We had been working together for almost 10 years and I was always the more confident one out of the two of us. I was always the one who offered the other Dr if they wanted me to break the bad news to an unlucky family. I was always the one that believed that everything was going to be okay but now I feel like the tables are turned and Eleazar knew it, too.
"Get something to eat, Carlisle. If I see any movement, I'll tell you as soon as it happens" he promised.
I gave him an appreciative smile. I didn't doubt him for a second. Since Jasper was his patient, he, too, was spending a little time with Jasper. Especially because we couldn't risk having him left alone for when he does wake up and when Eleazar is with another patient, there would be another nurse in here to keep an eye on him. But I still didn't think that having an unfamiliar face in the room was a good idea for when Jasper wakes up.
I recall the time I had introduced Jasper to Charlie; he felt a little defensive and would've attacked if I wasn't there to reassure him that he was safe. I might not be there when he wakes up and that's one thing that I can't push to the back of my mind.
"Alright" I agreed.
I gave Jasper's hair one last stroke before turning around to leave.
I have to admit, I felt a little better after getting something to eat and drink. Not only did it boost my energy but my confidence, too. Jasper was going to be fine. I knew it.
An hour and a half had gone by but I still heard nothing. I was currently with a new patient; a young boy who had broken his arm after falling off his bike
"Right, Conner, you will be wearing this sling for the next few weeks. By then, it shouldn't hurt to move it anymore" I told him.
The boy frowned a little.
"Does that mean I can't ride my bike anymore? I need two hands. I can't ride with just one" Connor asked innocently.
"Just for a little while" I told him with a small smile.
"I was riding a big boys bike. If I fell, does that mean I'm still not ready to ride it with two wheels?" Connor questioned.
He actually reminded me a lot of Edward when he was a young boy. He always tried his best to impress me, trying to do things that only 'big boys' do. I figured out that the real reason why he was so focused on impressing me was because I had adopted Emmett and then Rosalie not long after and he must have thought that I wasn't happy with my two biological children. I had to have a father son talk with him after I noticed that just to let him know that I loved him the way he was and that I adopted Emmett and Rose to keep him and Alice company since a life of a home schooled child can get lonely for them.
"Everyone has accidents, Connor. After your arm is all better, I'm sure you'll ride your bike like a professional" I told him.
His face suddenly lit up.
"Really? I want to be in the Olympics when I grow up and I will win all the bike races" he stated proudly.
I laughed at how determined he sounded. Just then, a nurse rushed into the cubicle.
"Dr Cullen, Dr Denali needs you in cubicle four. I'll take over for you, he says its urgent" she said in a rush.
Cubicle four was where Jasper was. Urgent? Did that mean he was awake? Or had something happened to him? Without any hesitation, I allowed the nurse to take over my patient while I rushed to where I was needed.
As soon as I walked through the door, I noticed that Jasper's bed was empty and everything attached to him had clearly been ripped out. My eyes scanned the room and I noticed Eleazar crouching calmly in the far corner. As soon as I made eye contact with him, he nodded his head to the other side of the room.
I looked to see where he was looking, to find Jasper crouching, also. With no surprise, he looked absolutely exhausted but at the same time, his eyes held so much energy with the focus he had on Eleazar. Right then, I was glad that Eleazar had chosen to copy Jasper's position to remain crouched because it made Jasper feel less threatened but he was still very cautious; so cautious that he didn't even notice that I was here.
The room was so quiet that I could hear Jasper's rasping breath but it worried me when I realised that he wasn't growling like he usually would've in this situation.
Stop worrying, Carlisle. You knew that it would hurt him to make any sound from his throat after he woke up. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's permanent. Be grateful that he's awake.
Awake. Jasper was awake.
"Jasper" I called calmly.
His ear twitched but that was the only reaction I got from him. I tried a different method; one that could risk me getting an injury by him because he feels vulnerable but could also cause him to snap out of it if he notices a friendly face. I took a step closer to him.
His eyes remained on Eleazar but he bared his teeth as if to say 'If I could growl at you, I would so take this as my warning'.
Of course, my plan was to ignore the warning so he was more likely to notice me so I took another step closer. This time, he made a small noise that was supposed to be a growl but I could tell that it hurt him because he winced. His eyes left Eleazar's, only to move to the carpet. I was wrong, he wasn't being defensive, he was feeling defenceless. And it surprised me when I noticed that he wasn't acting out on his fear; he would've lunged by now.
Was it because he was I pain? Or could it be his lack of energy? Or maybe, just maybe, could it be that I had got through to him when I told him that aggression wasn't the answer. If this moment wasn't so tense, I would've smiled at the possibility.
"It's alright, Jasper. Daddy's here" I encouraged quietly.
His ears twitched again but in recognition of my voice this time. He looked at me with the most innocent eyes that I have ever seen. The kind of eyes you would expect from a child that's trying to convince their parent how sorry they are in order to reduce the chance of punishment. Is that what Jasper was doing? Did he think that he was in trouble?
I lowered my body, kneeling down while opening up my arms to encourage Jasper to come to me. I was surprised when he actually moved as fast as he could to wrap his arms around me. I heard his breathing speed up which concerned me.
"Jasper, we need to put you back in this bed. It'll make you better sooner. Remember how I made you better?" I reminded him.
He nodded nervously but panicked when he noticed the tubes. "Those are the things that helped you breathe when you were sleeping, sweetheart" I told him, gently.
Explaining to him that they were there to help him should lessen his worry. Speaking of being there to help him, the tubes weren't the only thing I needed to inform Jasper about. I saw Eleazar stand slowly by the corner of my eye so I turned so that Jasper could see him. I didn't want him to feel sneaked up on.
"Jasper, this man is a doctor; just like me" I told him, carefully. "He is the man that made the pain go away".
I remember how Jasper's attitude toward me had changed when he had realized that I was the person who made his cut better so maybe Eleazar would get a similar reaction. Jasper furrowed his eyes at me and looked rather confused. Perhaps he thought that I was the one that helped the pain fade. Jasper opened his mouth and I realized that he was trying to speak.
"You d…." He began coughing repeatedly but as he did, the pain was returning to his throat which was becoming too much for him as tears began to fall from his eyes. I carried him to the bed as Eleazar began reattaching tubes and wires to his body. Jasper was trying to push away Eleazar's hand but I kept him restrained.
"Shhhhhhhh It's alright, sweetheart. We gonna make the pain go away. I promise. Shhhhhh" I calmed him.
He stopped resisting against me and allowed Eleazar to finish putting in his IV.
"That's it. Good boy" I praised him in a whisper.
I let go of his arms, trusting that he wouldn't rip out his IV again but he surprisingly grabbed my arm tightly; afraid that I would leave him on his own.
"Don't worry, Jas. I'm not going anywhere" I promised him.
He closed his eyes but he kept a firm grip on my wrist.
"Do you want me to call your family to let them know that he's awake?" Eleazar offered.
I nodded at him. Rosalie was probably waiting anxiously by the home phone just to hear the news that Jasper was conscious. Eleazar was about to leave to room when I called him back.
"Eleazar, now that he's awake, I think it's best to limit to amount of nurses he has. Believe me when I tell you that today's introduction was the most normal one we've had yet and I don't want him to feel outnumbered" I told him.
I knew that he understood now that he had seen Jasper's behavior right in front of him so he knew that what I requested was for the best. Once he left the room, I looked back at Jasper who had opened his eyes again and was staring right at me. His breathing sounded smoother again but it was clear that he wouldn't try to speak for a while after experiencing what he had.
"Rose will be here soon" I whispered to him.
A smile suddenly appeared on his face and he looked hopeful, stronger. He squeezed my wrist a little tighter than he was already holding it. Was that a thank you? I didn't think he had learnt that one yet.
"You should've told me if you was thirsty, Jasper" I scolded him.
I wanted so badly to praise him for how brave he was being but I didn't want to encourage him to do something like this again if he wanted to get praised. I also didn't want him to think that I was mad at him though because I knew that it wasn't his fault; it was mine. I had forgotten to fill up his water bottle last night.
I felt like I was failing him. Not only do I leave dangerous chemicals within his reach but I'm also forgetting the fact that he relies on me to give him food and water.
"I'm so sorry, Jas" I whispered apologetically as I leaned over and kissed him on his forehead.
He just closed his eyes once again. He may have spent half a day a sleep but he was still so exhausted.
