Jasper was hungry, cold and scared and the heavy rain on the forest wasn't helping. He jumped down from his favorite tree and decided to search for a source of food. His usual method on finding food was tracking down the animal traps that the men with the sticks always put down and waiting for something to get trapped; getting there before the men with the sticks returned.
Jasper always looked out for the men with sticks so that he could memorize all the areas the traps were placed. That was where he was heading now, a nearby caged trap that was put down specifically to kill rabbits.
Jasper ignored the shivering of his body and his dripping wet hair as he ran through the forest, not needing to stop for air. All of his focus was on finding food; trying to avoid getting any more thinner than he already was. Jasper didn't like the way his bones stuck out and he knew that without any body fat, he could eventually freeze to death. He thought he would this time last week as it had snowed heavily and he couldn't find any place to hide from the horrendous weather. He had been too frightened to close his eyes in fear that he wouldn't wake up but he was surprised when he found that he had the following morning. But now, the rain had helped clear up the snow but it was still too cold for Jasper.
When Jasper reached his destination, his nose caught the scent of another animal and was relieved when he spotted a dead rabbit in the caged trap. He was so hungry that he didn't even think to look around to make sure that the area was safe. He rushed over to the cage and opened it up. He placed a hand over the unlucky rabbit to find that it was still warm. Jasper figured that it was a very recent kill but he didn't remove his hand from the rodent just yet as he like the way it made his frozen hand feel warm.
"Hey!"
Jasper jumped back, hissing at the figure who had just startled him. He was much bigger than Jasper and he certainly had the body fat that could keep him warm but he was also wrapped in thick clothing that made Jasper feel slightly jealous. He was holding a big stick like object in his hands which Jasper recognized as the thing that caused animals to bleed and die after the loud and sudden noise. He did his best to not show how frightened he was. Hiding your fear was a method of survival and it was how Jasper managed to avoid any aggression from the dangerous animals such as wolves as he tended to ignore them. Whenever he crossed paths with one, he put on a face of bravery and kept as still as possible and they never gave him trouble; they just simply walked passed.
Unfortunately, man wasn't as kind. The stocky figure took a step forward, causing an automatic growl from Jasper as he took another step back. The man crouched down and took the rabbit which was a big mistake. The rabbit was Jasper's. He found it first so it was his and nobody messes with his kill. Jasper snarled at the big man to let him know that this was his final warning but he just chuckled. This angered Jasper so he lunged for the bulkier man in attempt to get his food back.
The man groaned in pain as Jasper sunk his teeth in the mans neck which was a move Jasper later regretted as the man remembered the weapon he was holding and used that to hit Jasper round the head. Jasper released his grip on the figure and fell back onto the ground but he didn't give up. He was starving, making him determined to fight to the death for his food.
He got up as fast as he could and snatched the dead animal away from the man and ran back as fast as he could, but then he heard the loud bang that caused him to wince, and then fall in pain. The back of his shoulder was in agony and he could feel the wetness drip down his back; staining his skin with red liquid. He tried to hold back a whimper, trying to hide his pain from the man who was approaching him again.
He tensed up as he felt large fingers poking at his back, examining his injury.
"Jesus" the man muttered, confused as to why a youngster was this far out into the woods, skinny, dirty and animalistic. But despite the smallest amount of pity he felt, the kid wasn't his problem and he was mad at how the filthy kid bit him. He wasn't sure what to do. He knew that if he took the kid to the hospital, he would get in trouble for firing a gun at him.
He could leave the kid in a place where somebody else would find them or perhaps leave an anonymous call. Or he could just forget about the boy and when he eventually loses consciousness from blood loss, animals would feed from him. He was aware that this place had a number of wolves even though he had killed a few of them. Besides, only other hunters come out this far into the woods. He made his decision to simply walk away, not giving the kid a second thought.
Jasper weakly lifted his head and watched as the threat walked away, gun in hand and only then did he let the tears fall. He couldn't move his left arm and he feared that there was damaged to his shoulder bone. He wanted to get up, to hide but he couldn't find the strength to do so. Instead, he just laid there and waited for death to take him. For so long, he wanted to give up fighting; all those times he wished to be warm, to be fed, or to simply have somebody there to protect him as he slept, maybe somebody to comfort when he was scared. But for some reason, he always kept on fighting, refusing to let himself be taken by nature. But now, he simply didn't care. He closed his eyes and wished the pain away.
Present day
Jasper woke up to Emmett's snoring, and his ears twitched at the irritating sound. He jumped off the bed and moved under it which he discovered to be his favorite spot. He liked small places because they provided him with cover and protection. Besides, nobody else could get under the bed as fast as he could because he was very flexible. It also reminded people that he didn't want to be disturbed although sometimes they still did. He preferred being left alone when he was mad and right now, he didn't want to see his daddy. He was angry with him. His daddy was supposed to protect him from the bad men in his sleep but now they were also with him when he was awake. Jasper couldn't stop thinking about all the bad things that had happened to him. He knew what man was capable of and was thankful that he hadn't been physically harmed by anybody in his new family but that didn't mean they hadn't hurt his feelings. Alice being the first to do so and his daddy to be the most recent.
Right now, he decided to stick with Emmett as he enjoyed being bros with him and he loved the feeling of protection when he was around him. Emmett was strong and could fight off any man with a stick that came his way. But most of all, Emmett was always happy and Jasper loved being around happy emotions; especially when he was distressed because it helped him keep calm.
That didn't mean he didn't like Edward though. He did but he realized Edward tended to avoid nice gestures in front of everybody else but when the two of them were alone, Edward was very nice to Jasper. He made him breakfast just the way he liked it, he helped him with his grammar and also praised him whenever Jasper deserved it.
He didn't understand why Rose and Edward didn't get along as Jasper thought they had quite a lot in common. He hated feeling like he was in the middle of the two of them, he loved them both and didn't want to choose one or the other.
Jasper could hear the movement above him and Emmett's snoring had stopped so he guessed that his bro was awake. Emmett groaned as he moved out of the bed and Jasper spotted his feet as they hit the floor, and then he crouched and poked his head under the bed.
"Hey bro. What are you doing back under there?"
Jasper grinned at him and came out from under the bed.
"You make me bweakfast today?" Jasper asked, putting on his puppy eyes.
It was his favorite method on getting his own way because it worked all the time. That's why he was getting spoiled rotten, because Jasper was smart enough to know how to get people to give him what he wants. Edward was the only one who didn't fall for the puppy eyes but Jasper had other methods.
"Sure dude. What do you want?" Emmett questioned.
Jasper thought about his answer carefully. Edward always made him porridge, which he preferred with lots of sugar but he doubted that Emmett would make it as good as Edward could. He enjoyed eating pancakes with golden syrup too but again, only his mom could perfect those. Because this was Emmett, Jasper knew that he should keep things simple.
"Cewial" he answered.
"Come on then, bro" Emmett said as he stood and left the room.
Jasper hesitated. He wasn't sure if he wanted to leave the safe surroundings of Emmett's room in fear that he would cross paths with his daddy. Perhaps he was at work today. Jasper couldn't hear him but that didn't mean he wasn't home. He chose to risk it and left the room quietly, cautiously looking around every corner.
He heard Emmett pour cereal into a bowl so Jasper knew that he was already in the kitchen. Jasper quietly but quickly rushed down the stairs but stopped once he was all the way down. He looked out for anymore signs of movement and heard the sound of two different sets of feet on the ground in the kitchen. One was Emmett's but he couldn't quite tell who the other pair belong to so he listened out for the mysterious person to speak so that he could identify them.
"Jasper, dude, what are you waiting for?" Emmett questioned as he poked his head around the door.
Jasper took a deep breath and headed for the kitchen, getting slower as he neared the room. He relaxed as soon as he spotted his mom. He didn't mind her, she was very gentle and she knew when to give Jasper the space he needed.
"Morning sweetheart"
He liked the way his mom smiled warmly at him, making him feel a little more comfortable so he gave her a shy smile in return. Emmett pointed to the bowl of cereal on the table, reminding Jasper that his breakfast was ready. Jasper sat up the table and made a start on his food.
"So is everyone still in bed. You or dad usually wake us up by 8 on a weekday?" Emmett pointed out.
"Well, your father is at work but he'll be home late tonight because he has something to do, Edward is over Bella's but Alice and Rose are still sleeping" Esme explained.
"I guess Edward is still mooning over Bella then" Emmett mumbled.
Jasper tilted his head in confusion, which his brother noticed and decided to explain to his level.
"Edward likes Bella. Bella likes Edward. But they won't tell the other how they feel" he stated.
Jasper frowned a little at this, but the confusion didn't leave his face.
"Eward just like? Eward no love?"
His questioning not only put a smirk on Emmett's face but a smile on Esme's too. Jasper wasn't sure what was funny though. He knew how it felt to love somebody but to not know if those feelings were returned. And even when he finally found the confidence to tell Alice about his love for her, nothing seemed to change. But then again, he wasn't sure what to expect.
Tell me what you think about Jasper's past, I promise there is more to come
