I woke up alone as I thought I would. I wasn't mad or anything I figured he'd need space for a little while to think. As I sat up my neck was stiff so I got up to look for some Advil. As I made my way into the bathroom I heard a conversation ensuing down the hall. It sounded like the whole family was over which was weird. I very quiet as I made my way to the door to listen.
"She doesn't need to know" Edward hissed "It would only make things worse"
"You can't keep it from her… she's too smart for her own good" Jasper added "She'll know something's up"
"But do you really think telling her now is the best thing? You know she'll stress herself out and I don't think anyone wants that baby to come out now" Rose continued
What were they talking about? Was something wrong? It was weird the whole family was here talking secretively without me? The fact they haven't heard me yet made it certain that something serious was going on.
"If Bella knows we're being watched then she'll want to go to Volterra herself and talk to them…" Esme added
Volterra? That means…
"The hell she will" Emmett yelled
"I won't allow that" Edward muttered "She is not getting anywhere near them"
"You know we would never allow that Edward" I heard Carlisle whisper "But we need to figure out what angle to approach this"
"We could say we're going on a hunting trip and head to Volterra" Emmett suggested
"That wouldn't work, she'd know something was up" Alice said and I could almost hear the eye roll
I walked closer to the living room and the floor creaked, giving me away.
"Damn it" I mouthed
"Bella's up so I suggest we stop talking about this for now" Alice whispered "I can take her out later for a girls day and you guys can talk later"
"Thanks Alice" Edward sighed "She could use some time to relax anyways"
I wiped the fear off my face and decided to continue in the room. All eyes turned to me and they flashed me a smile. I tried to look surprised that they were all here.
"Hi Bella" Alice smiled
"Hi" I smiled back "Hi everyone"
Edward opened up his arms and I climbed into them. He wrapped his arms around my middle and kissed my cheek.
"How do you feel?"
"Fine" I shrugged "I just took some Advil for my neck though. So what's with the party going on in the living room?"
"Just talking. We were thinking about going hunting but I didn't want to leave you here alone so…"
"Rose and I are going to take you and Abby for a girl's day. I thought maybe we could get out nails done"
"What about Ryan?"
"I was going to take him with me. I think he's old enough to experience hunting.
Plus I'm curious to see how he takes it" Edward said
"You're going to bring a 2 year old hunting?" I asked
I knew they weren't really going hunting. It was just a ploy so they could secretly talk. I knew Edward would never allow his 2 year old son to see him violently kill animals. I just can't believe he'd think I'd fall for it.
"I'll keep him safe" he promised
"Okay well I guess I'll get her up and get ready"
I gave him a quick kiss and made my way into my daughter's room. She was sitting up in her bed bouncing around.
"Hey my little princess. How would you like to go get your nails painted with mommy and your aunties?"
"Yeah" she smiled
After I got her dressed and ready to go she pranced into the other room.
"Daddy I'm going to get my nails done" she yelled
"I heard" he laughed
"Well let's get going huh?" I grabbed her hand
"Be careful and have fun" he leaned over to give me a quick kiss
It was a very quiet ride to the salon and I tried my best to read Alice and Rosalie's expression in the front seats. They were whispering quietly to each other and it was irritating me.
"Is there something you guys want to tell me?" I asked
"No why?"
"No reason" I shrugged
Once we were at the nail salon I tried to keep my fears to myself but I think they could tell something was off.
"Bella are you okay?" Rose asked
"What?" I asked
"I said are you okay?"
"I'm fine why?"
"You seem very distant"
"Oh… I'm fine" I shrugged "I just get tired easily now. It's getting harder to walk around with this big belly"
She nodded and grabbed Abby's hand, leading her towards the pedicure chairs. The ladies working there smiled at us.
"Girls day out?" she asked and I nodded "Well go pick out a color and pick a seat"
I nodded and picked Abby up so she could see all the options. Behind me I saw Rosalie and Alice whispering in the corner, their expressions serious. Alice reached for her phone to quickly send a text. And they say I'm bad at keeping secrets.
"Mommy I want pink"
"Okay" I grabbed her a light pink and a red for myself
Rosalie helped Abby up into her seat and Alice had to help me.
"Thanks" I blushed
"No problem Bella" she laughed
I have to admit I did like getting a pedicure and it felt great considering my swollen ankles and sore feet. Abby was giggling loudly when the lady scrubbed her little feet. I pulled out my phone to snap a couple photos.
"So why did you guys decide to have a girl's day?" I asked
"I just thought you'd enjoy it. Edward said you've been a little stressed lately, especially with the accident and…" Alice rambled
"So nothing else is going on?" I hinted
"No why?" Rose asked
I just shrugged and watched as the lady paint my toes a blood red (the irony of that haha). Abby was enjoying herself because every time they did something she would ask what is was and why they were doing it.
"Do you like it?" I asked her
"It tickles" she laughed
I know but try to stay still, you don't want the polish all over your foot"
After our nails were done we stopped at an ice cream shop to get Abby a cone. She was complaining how hungry she was. I still kept noticing that Alice and Rosalie were acting weird. They seemed like they wanted to tell me something but knew they couldn't.
When we got home everyone was still in the same position from when we left. Edward opened his arms up and gratefully fell into them. He kissed my cheek lovingly.
"Did you have fun?" he asked
"Ya, did you? Did you end up going hunting" I noticed that his eyes were a dull gold
"No, Ryan was a little fussy so I'll just go early tomorrow morning when you guys are sleeping"
"Oh…Okay" I shrugged
"So where's my little princess?"
"Alice was getting her out of the car. She loved getting her toes done" I laughed
I pulled out my phone and flipped through my photos to show him just how much fun she had. He smiled at the pictures of her laughing.
"Daddy look at my nails" she ran in and jumped up onto his lap
"Let me see" he acted excited and grabbed her little foot "So pretty"
I could definitely tell that something was wrong when we were walking home later on. Edward was very quiet the whole walk home and his eyes seemed to be searching the surrounding woods. He wouldn't let Abby walk home and kept a tight grasp on my hand.
"Edward did you forget that I'm pregnant? I can't walk that fast"
"Sorry love"
"I have to sit for a minute" I handed Ryan off to Edward and placed myself on a rock
"Are you okay?" he placed a hand on my back
"Yeah" I took a deep breath "Why were you walking so fast?"
"I just want to get you guys home"
After a minute he helped me up and we finally made our way back to the house. By the time we got back it was way past the kid's bedtime.
"I'll go put them to bed. Why don't you go and get comfortable"
I went to bed really early that night, the stress of wondering what was going in was taking a toll on me. I decided to start reading a new book, I haven't had much time to do that lately. Edward was putting Ryan down in the other room. He's been having trouble sleeping since the accident. He finally came into the room and took a seat in front of me on the bed. He placed his finger under my chin to make me look at him.
"I'm sorry about the other day in the car. I didn't mean to snap at you like that, I just had a lot on my mind and I've haven't hunted in a while and know that's no excuse but…"
"Edward, I'm not mad- I never was"
"Good because I hate it when you're mad at me" he gave a weak smile that didn't reach his eyes
"Are you sure that there's nothing else going on?"
"Why would something else be going on?" he fidgeted "You know I tell you everything"
"Yes but sometimes…"
"Bella I swear I'm not hiding anything. No come on and go to bed"
"I know you would never hide anything from me because I trust and love you. You can tell me anything even if it's horrible. If you don't tell me then I can't help"
He wrapped him arms around my waist and pulled me against his chest. He was a little more forceful tonight and I noticed that his arms were wrapped tightly around my middle like he was afraid I was going to disappear.
"I'll protect you always" he whispered so low I don't think it was meant for my ears
With all the thought about the Volturi, it had me holding onto him tightly too. I fell asleep like that, each of us scared but the other not knowing we were scared of the exact same thing.
When I woke up Edward was staring at me weirdly yet concerned. I smiled at him but he didn't return it which had me worried.
"I need to tell you something" he said shakily
"Good morning to you too" I laughed
"You need to know something and what you told me last night…"
"What is it?" I asked, although I think I already know what it's about
"I had Alice take you out yesterday because the rest of us needed to talk about something that came up"
"Okay I'm all ears" I sat up
"Please don't be scared"
"Edward just tell me"
"We got a letter from the Volturi" he said fast "I can't believe that I wasn't more careful and after what happened last time. I knew this was going to happen eventually, they always have someone watching but don't worry I'll take care of this. You don't have to be scared or worried"
I just there letting him explain what was happening. I think he was waiting for me to be surprised or cry. Something within me wanted to cry and complain about how unfair life was but I never shed a tear.
"Bella did you hear me?"
"I knew" I whispered
"What do you mean you knew?" he asked
"I heard you guys talking yesterday" I looked down at my hands
He sighed and pulled me into his arms "Why didn't you say anything sooner?"
"I don't know I guess I just wanted to let you tell me when you thought the time was right"
"I'm sorry love, I shouldn't have kept you in the dark"
"How long have you known?" I asked
"About a week. Carlisle got note from Aro" I shivered at his name. "I was going to tell you but I wanted to figure things out first"
"Can I see the note?"
He got up and rummaged through his dresser drawer until he pulled out a now crumpled piece of parchment to hand to me. I shakily read the calligraphy writing.
Dear Cullens,
We have been informed that Isabella has yet to be changed. Instead she and Edward have chosen to conceive another child. We have given you more than enough chances. You know we don't like our authority to be tested. You leave us no choice but to take Isabella back to Volterra where she can watched until the child is born, then be changed here. We look forward to hearing from you shortly to make arrangements.

I put the note down and looked up at husband who had a worried look forming on his face. There was no way in hell I was going to deliver my baby anywhere near them. I reached out for Edward's hand and grasped it tightly.
