Merlin smiled as he sat next to the other man behind the piano, he loved listening to the other play, the music echoing through the room, it was so wonderful and beautiful.
He glanced once to the side, the man kept his eyes closed, knowing exactly were to lay his fingers, the tones forming gentle songs, melodies that caused shivers to run down his spine, run down the spines of everyone that heard.
The song ended and Merlin let out a breath that he didn't even knew he was holding. The music was pure magic.
'You liked it?' He turned to look at the other who was looking at him with almost begging eyes.
'Of course I liked it, this was even better than your last one, I'm really proud of you Amadeo.' He rubbed his hand through the others' blond locks. Amadeo might be a grown man, but most of the time he acted like a child, always wanting to have recognition for the things he did.
They had met a few months before, Amadeo had been poisoned and although Merlin was able to save him, he wasn't able to find out who had been trying to kill Amadeo. Ever since that moment, he had stayed by Amadeo's side, making sure that he wasn't attacked again. He suspected that the poisoning had been done out of jealousy, maybe even to steal Amadeo's work.
'You want to get something to eat?'
Merlin grinned and nodded and both soon put on their coats. The warlock wrapped his arms around himself, knowing the cold that would hit him as soon as he stepped outside. He loved snow, especially in the mountains, but it was just so cold and it always felt like he was freezing his toes off. He took a deep breath before he stepped into the freshly fallen snow.
A smile crossed his lips as he saw the footsteps he made, though he was partly blinded by the snowflakes that kept falling in his eyes, everywhere around him it was white.
He could feel Amadeo's hand brush into his own as the man stepped closer. 'You know, I think I know how I want it to finish.'
Merlin looked at him. 'Really, you have been struggling with that for a while now, why now?'
'I'm not quite sure.' Amadeo said before he turned his head upwards, staring up at the sky, or rather blinking as he was blinded by the snow falling in his eyes. 'I think it's the snow, you know, every snowflake is unique. There aren't two that are quite the same.'
'Just like people.'
'Yes, you're right about that.' The other agreed and they fell silent for a moment more.
They ended up in the small restaurant where they often ate. They settled down at a table near the window. Mary soon came to get their order, she was definitely one of the most enthusiastic and kind woman he had ever met. She reminded him of his own mother, she almost was for a lot of people, he had often found it strange that she didn't have any children, though he knew that she had unofficially adopted Amadeo... and maybe even him too.
He had gone quiet again, just listening as he heard Amadeo softly hum, it was a nice tune and he figured it was probably what he had in mind for the finishing touch of his latest work.
It was rather late when they went back home, both a little tipsy from the mead and Amadeo was hanging onto his shoulder rather heavily. Amadeo reached for his pocket and with a wobbly hand he pulled out his key.
Once inside he dropped Amadeo on the couch and quickly went to get a hot bath, since he was literally frozen, and to get a change of clothes. He yelped from the soft pain as he felt the warm water touch his frozen skin, slowly the pain disappeared and he didn't want to get out at all.
Half an hour later he returned to the main room, his hair still slightly wet and he stopped for a moment, hearing the gentle tones of music and he smiled as he stepped back in the room. Amadeo sat once more behind the piano, his fingers almost flying over the keys. Merlin walked forward, hanging onto the side of the piano as he simply watched the man play, feeling the enchantment from the magic of the music, which was running through the air.
He knew the music by heart and to his surprise he could hear that Amadeo had finished, or at least added parts to the piece and it kept getting better, so he closed his eyes, just letting himself be swept away by the music.
Amadeo played the last tone and the music disappeared, leaving the room in complete silence and Merlin could only sigh in disappointment.
It stayed that way for a while before he could feel two hands around his waist and he was pulled into a hug. 'I finished it.'
'It was beautiful... When will you let the others hear it?'
Merlin opened his eyes and looked down at Amadeo, the man was looking at him with a sad smile on his lips and shaking his head slightly. 'I won't be playing it for anyone else. I finished Requiem for you, and only you... It will also be the last time I play it.'
'Why?'
'Merlin.' His voice turned serious. 'I'm dying.'
'What!'
The hands around his waist tightened. 'I don't see how you couldn't have noticed... I have felt it ever since you saved me... you only prolonged my life.' Merlin could only stare in pure horror at him. 'It's fine, I have had a great time with you and without you I really wouldn't be here anymore... So you can see the Requiem as my final gift to you.'
A tear ran over his cheek and without hesitation he pulled the other closer to him, tight, afraid to lose him.
That night was a long night and they stayed together for a long time, chatting happily, just laughing, until Amadeo fell asleep in his arms. Merlin smiled gently down at him, stroking his hair and keeping watch over the dying man. He should have noticed it before, but he hadn't and somewhere in his heart it angered him... He sighed again and returned to brushing the blond hair, letting his magic spread out. He could feel the life leaving Amadeo... He died at five minutes before one.
The great Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was dead.
The next day Merlin left, traveling through the hard winds, filled with snow and ice and his heart filled with loss, though he could also feel the love. His time with his friend had been a wonderful time and he wouldn't change that for the world.
