A/n kudos to Deanna for helping me coauthor and being the beta for this story as well as meeting of the souls, also to Cindy and Jo Ann for beta readers, more eyes, better story, right?
Not ours, but our playground. Not always playing nice either. Yes, the hospital is real and the 'names' are correct.
Moving forward
The very next day, Jennifer Brown had been assigned to work with Helen Plum. She had been assigned to be her therapist at the "LUNATIC ASYLUM FOR TRENTON AKA TRENTON PSYCHIATIRIC HOSPITAL".
Personally Jennifer thought the 'Lunatic' asylum was a perfect name for her latest client, Helen had shown no grip on reality and she kept on insisting that her former husband, Frank Plum was on his way to take her home. She insisted that the clothes she was ironing and mending for the inmates at the jail, was in fact his laundry.
Today Jennifer was telling Helen of her new home. Just waiting for her to move into, she would have her own room, with a window view of the gardens. Her new room was 3 floors up and while there weren't any bars on the windows. Rangeman would be monitoring her closely. Her husband was Bobby Brown and the state had contracted them to upgrade the security for the hospital. You see, the hospital was a co-ed facility and things that shouldn't have happened, had happened. And who knows, maybe Joe Morelli would be joining Helen there. It all depended on if he accepted reality or if he would finally 'crack.'
Helen sat there listening to Jennifer, talking to her like she mattered, like a daughter would her own mother. In Helen's mind (what little she had left) she had started calling Jennifer her real daughter's name, Stephanie. She was so proud of Stephanie/Jennifer, she would ask about her day, her husband and the baby they were expecting soon.
Helen had thought of herself as a grandmother for a long time now, for some reason her flashbacks had brought the name of Valerie to mind, but she quickly dismissed that idea, and instead focused on Stephanie. This Stephanie was married, this Stephanie was having a baby, this Stephanie was someone to be proud of, and Helen told Stephanie/Jennifer, 'your daddy and I are so proud you are having a boy, do you know how long we have wanted a boy in the family?'
'Yes Helen, I know just what you want, and I know where you need to start living, so let's get on with the packing shall we?" Jennifer asked her. There wasn't much to pack in fact a couple changes of clothes, her Emily post book on etiquette, the third version of it, and she was ready to go.
The drive took hardly any time; her car was followed by a Rangeman vehicle. Carlos and his men were nothing if not prepared. The guards at the hospital had been switched off with Ram, Junior and Cal. Each was pulling at eight hour shift, while all the time getting "Combat pay" for dealing with Helen.
Jennifer/Stephanie took her patient into her room to get her situated, the first couple of days would be rough as Helen had no classes or privileges including being outside; first she had to be observed settling down into her new environment. It didn't hurt that every movement or comment she made was being recorded, after all it was for everyone's benefit it was happening.
Frank and Angie had talked to Jennifer extensively about the move regarding Helen; while he wished her no harm, she did hit his wife and he was willing to let the chips fall where they may, Edna was also included in this conversation, Valerie chose not to attend and Stephanie had opted out, she wasn't going anywhere near her mother. It was going to take years of therapy just to deal with that issue, let alone the rape.
When it came time to diagnose Helen, they had called it a 'psychotic break', meaning Helen's mind had checked out over the fight with Angie as well as the fact, that she was convinced Stephanie had asked to be raped by Joe. Now she was calling Jennifer by Stephanie's name, it was something new to be added onto the list. Everyone wore nametags at the hospital; they had embedded GPS chips in them, courtesy of Hector; who knew what would happen once Helen was allowed out and about to roam the grounds. Safety was considered top priority there at the lunatic asylum.
While they were dealing with Helen, Morelli was just finding out he was being assigned 'jobs' while he was a 'guest' in jail, he would be helping to clean the shower room, something he dreaded just thinking about.
Trenton was undergoing budget cuts like most of the nation and tightening up the jail budget was Juniak's job. He came up with the idea of using inmates to help with the cleanup, in and around the jail. Other Cities were doing with, with very good success. The inmates were getting three meals a day, and lodging while awaiting trial or waiting to be moved to prison after sentencing, it only made sense for them to earn their keep.
Of course, Juniak could hardly wait to assign the jobs that 'certain' inmates got. He would rotate Morelli between bathroom/shower duties, all the way to scrubbing toilets, to kitchen duty, scrubbing the pots and pans.
Another thing Juniak could do was to make sure inmates were assigned to certain cells, and since Morelli was in the general population, he was going to having three other cellmates starting tomorrow.
Not just any cellmates either, these men were from Rangeman. Personally wanting the job of keeping Morelli "off balance," maybe if he talked about what he did to 'certain' folks, Melissa would be able to use the information, in case he did get up on the stand.
When the men met Stephanie, each had fallen under her spell. Only after being briefed by Tank and Carlos about what had happened to Tanks 'little girl' and Carlos's 'Babe', would they be able to spend time with her. They were willing to do anything to help chase her nightmares away and maybe give her tormentor a nightmare or two of his own. They were really hoping to be chosen for that assignment.
When the time came to choose, Carlos chose Hector, Binkie and Manny. They were chosen for their skills, Hector due to his 'kill now ask questions later 'attitude, plus his teardrop tattoos helped play on the gang banger theme. Binkie looked the most innocent, so he could get a conversation going with Morelli. Manny was chosen for his secretive brooding looks, intimidating like Hector, which to be honest was the plan, maybe by being scared enough, Binkie would become his friend.
Plus, Hector was bisexual, and right now he was focused on meeting the extra hairy, tattooed man who hurt his little angel girl.
Everything was in place for the next day; Helen was locked up tightly in the loony bin, Morelli was getting new cell mates, Stephanie and her family was together for the evening. All in all, it was a good day.
Stephanie had been a bit despondent in the earlier part of the day, all things considering, it had been expected. Carlos and Stephanie had decided they needed to talk to Ella. She came right over and they had an almost 4 hour session with her. Regarding Joe and what he had said in the courtroom. Stephanie had gone from regressing to progressing, once again.
Angie was feeling a bit better after her talk with Frank, the night before, but still wanted to talk to Ella and Stephanie. She patiently waited for Carlos and Stephanie to finish talking to Ella. As the door to the room they had been using opened, Angie stood up and asked, if she could have a word with Ella and Stephanie. She nodded to Carlos that she ok and the three of them entered the room, closing the door behind them.
Angie was nervous with what she wanted to say, but decided to just 'spit' it out. 'Stephanie' 'your father and I talked last night and I just need to say, How VERY sorry I am that Joe tuned out just like his father.' Angie continued talking about how they had thought they had taught him right from wrong; they thought they had achieved that. That she was ashamed and disappointed in him. 'I still love him, he is my son after all, but it's buried so deep right now and I know I can't ever forgive him for what he has done to you. If only he would take responsibility for his actions and admit what he did was wrong.'
Stephanie listened to her step-mother talk and when Angie had said what was on her mind, 'I don't blame you, you did the best you could. The ONLY person here to blame is Joe,' Stephanie said. After the talk, Angie felt better then she had in a while.
Dinner was a noisy affair. Stephanie was laughing again and everyone would tell a joke or a funny story, just to keep the mood light. They all knew in the back of their minds that tomorrow would be another rough day for Stephanie.
After dinner, Stephanie and Carlos had taken a walk, holding hands in the backyard and he had tucked a curl behind her ear, giving her a kiss on her cheek, waiting for permission to move into her own space. Stephanie nodded and Carlos leaned in and gave her a long, gentle kiss. It happened to be the only real kiss they had shared so far. Carlos had let Stephanie take the lead in their relationship. He knew she needed to be the person in-charge and by god he was going to let her. In the long run, it would be worth it. Carlos had the girl after all.
