Chapter 34:
Avery helped her fellow Gladers put out the fire. Everything was going through her head. We are never leaving now. We are stuck in this place. We are never getting out alive. Avery was stressed beyond her limit. She was freaking out. How could someone do this? Didn't everyone want to leave, and get revenge on the people who put us here? Avery just didn't understand. Her, Newt and Teresa spent the entire night in there trying to find a way out. Someone must have listened in and decided they didn't want to leave, so no one else would. They put out the last flame and Avery left. She walked until she found Minho, who was talking with Newt and Thomas and Teresa. She then knew something was up.
"Okay, spill it." She stated. Four pairs of eyes shot to her. "There's something going on. If you don't tell me, I will find out, one way or another."
"Okay. Calm down Avery." Newt said.
"Hold on. Did you just tell me to calm down? The bloody map room just burned to the ground, which contained all of our work and every single map, and you are telling me to calm down?" Avery's voice rising with every word. Minho took this as a sign, another out burst was coming. He went over and stood beside her. She noticed this action.
"Sorry, Newt." Newt nodded.
"Avery all the maps are fine. We took them all out last night. While everyone was sleeping and after the Grievers came and took another one of us. There are people in here that want to stay. They don't want to face what's out there." Thomas explained. "We needed to take precautions. So everything is fine. It's all safe. Okay?"
"Okay." Avery said.
"Okay, now we just need to find anything to help us fight against the Grievers. Spears, knives, anything. We also will need everyone to start getting everything ready. We leave in two days."
"But by then there will be two less people." Minho said.
"No, No one is dying tonight or tomorrow night. We keep everyone safe." Thomas spoke. Silence followed after a few minutes until Newt spoke up.
"I wish I had my memories, then I would know what I would be up against out there."
"Memories..." Thomas whispered. No one heard only Avery.
"Avery can I speak to you?" Minho asked.
"Sure." He took her hand and led them away from the small group. He stopped walking when they entered Deadheads.
"Minho what's wrong?" Avery asked, sounding concerned. Minho turned to her and smiled.
"I can't believe we are getting out of here." he said. Avery smiled back at him.
"I know, seems like only yesterday I woke up here." Avery said looking through the trees at the Glade.
"This is the only place I know, and I am tired of it. I want to go out and explore. See wants beyond the exit. Find whoever did this to us." Minho said pacing. Avery turned and looked at him. She placed a hand on his arm to stop him.
"We both will." She told him. "We will do this together, Minho." Minho placed his arms around her waist and held her. Her arms went up around his neck. They stood there just enjoying each others company, until it was time to leave and go get some lunch. They were reluctant to leave the shaded area but they were both hungry.
That night, they waited. They heard the all to familiar groaning of the Grievers. They heard them climbing the Homestead. Everything went still, then it came the blood curling scream. It filled the air, nothing to block the sound of the poor boy who was slipping from the hands of life. The next thing that happened, shocked everyone. Thomas pulled the door open and ran outside.
"Thomas!" Avery yelled. She followed him.
"Avery!" Minho and Newt called after her. The four of them ran out, just in time to see Thomas jump on top of a Griever.
"Thomas! What are you doing?" Avery yelled. Minho and Newt had caught up to her and just stared shocked at Thomas. But the Griever shrugged off Thomas, like it was no big deal, and kept going. Thomas didn't move for a second, but got back up.
"You are crazy!" Avery said walking up to him. "Do you have a death wish?" she asked him. All of them were waiting to hear why Thomas done what he did.
"I need my memories back. It would help everyone. It would give us an advantage." Thomas said. Avery then noticed that Thomas's hands were behind his back.
"Thomas... What did you do?"
"Nothing yet. But When I wake up everything will be fine. I will have my memories." Thomas said plunging the stinger into his leg. Darkness immediately took over. Avery was the first one to him. She caught him, but he was heavy and she fell to the ground with him.
"Thomas? Thomas?" Avery yelled out, getting no response back.
