Chapter 38:
Thomas and the Keepers decided that everyone would leave in one day. They would leave during the morning, then they would have all day to get to the exit. Plus, they won't run into any Grievers because those still come out at night, right? When Minho told Avery to start packing anything that might be of use to get out, she was excited and scared at the sime time. She really couldn't wait to get out of this place, but she was also afraid to go out beyond the walls and through the exit of the Maze. No one knew what would be waiting for them on the other side, that's why they had to prepare, and everyone had their own jobs. Avery's was to gather weapons, or anything that could pass as a weapon, with Teresa.
"What do you think will be on the other side?" Teresa asked her. Avery looked up at her. Avery didn't know how to respond.
"I don't know. Hopefully nothing too dangerours." that was all she could think. She didn't want to think that maybe there was people lined up on the other side of the exit waiting, just waiting, to kill them all as they stepped through.
walk "All the boys are saying, It will be a new start. We might even get our memories back. Get revenge on the people who did this to us." Teresa told her. Avery just listened,
"Yeah. But I don't want to walk back into my past, I just want to go straight on towards the future." Teresa nodded, and helped her pick up some spears they found. Then they just kept looking.
Melissa's P.O.V:
Melissa was panicing. They were planning on leaving. The would be better off staying in there. She knows W.I.C.K.E.D. isn't finished with them yet. She feels ashamed for joining W.I.C.K.E.D, but she didn't it to help Thomas and Avery. So far, she has only gotten a connection with Avery, she is still working on Thomas, but it has been difficult.
Melissa was sitting at her desk one day, when she was paged.
Melissa Chancellor Paige would like to see you in her office right now. She says it's urgent.
"Okay. Thank you." Melissa can feel a slight tremor in her lip and sweat starting to form on her forehead.
"Okay, you can do this Melissa. Act like everything is normal and you'll be fine." Melissa whispers. She slowy stands up and starts walking. She walks down a series of corridors, until she's in the right one. Melissa stares at the door. It's the one at the very end of the hall way. She starts off in a slow walk.
"Come on. If you walk "All the boys are saying, It will be a new start. We might even get our memories back. Get revenge on the people who did this to us." Teresa told her. Avery just listened,
slow she'll knowslow she'll know that something is wrong." Melissa tells herself. "You can do this."
Melissa knocked on the door. She a faint 'come in' and she turned the knob. Chancellor Paige's office was big, but didn't have much in it. A desk, a long table, a few paintings on the wall and some chairs. Paige was at her desk.
"Hello, Melissa. Please have a seat. Are you thirsty?" Chancellor Parige says without looking up.
"No. I'm fine." Melissa responds while sitting. Now the Chancellor looks up.
"Melissa you are one of W.I.C.K.E.D's finest. We enjoy having you work here. Do you like working here?"
"Yes, I do."
"Would you mind if I ask you some questions?"
"Not at any question you want." Melissa says getting nervous.
"Do you have any relation to anyone in the Maze?" Melissa's breath hitches. Stay calm.
"No. I don't. Why do you ask Chancellor?"
"Well, there have been some reports saying that you have been spending a lot of time watching the screens. Watching the Maze. Some say you even tell some workers to take the rest of the day off and that you'll cover their shift. Which you do. Some more suggest that your behavior has been strange recently. Are any of these comments are lies?" Melissa looks at her. Theres a long pause before responding.
"There'll all true. I just find...it...um...all so interesting. I really do. It must have taken forever to create that Maze, it's all so fascinating. Don't you think? And regards to my behavior, I haven't been getting mucb sleep lately. I think I might be coming down with a cold or something."
"Yes I do. I am sorry to have made it seem like you are in the wrong Melissa. You may leave now. Please have the rest of the day off. Take care of that cold." Melissa nods and stands up. She is just turning the knob when she Chancellor says something.
"Oh, and Melissa. Next time let people do their own jobs and you do yours." then she smiles. Melissa smiles back and leaves the room. I need to lay low. I should have known people would have noticed.
Melissa thought to herself. There's only one thing to do now, warn the others.
