Chapter 40:

Avery clutched her side as Minho helped her door from the doorway.

"Let me look." Minho said turning her side towards him to have a better look. He lifted up her shirt and examined the wound.

"Did she get stung? A Griever did attack her." Newt asked.

"No, I don't think so." Minho said putting her shirt back down. "Probably some other device that was attached to it. You seen those things." Avery looked up and down the hallway along with several others.

"Looks empty." Teresa noticed.

"It does. But which way do we go?" ask Frypan, who survived. Not many of them did. Like Alby, who was missed by everyone.

"Well, lets walk this way." Thomas said pointing right. "If it's not the right way, we'll just walk back. There's got to be some way out of this place."

They have been walking for about ten minutes now. They still didn't see anything. Until about three minutes later. There was an EXIT sign above a door.

"Should we open it? We have no idea what's on the other side." Newt asked.

"There's only one way to find out." Thomas said and placed his hand on the knob and slowly opened the door...

A few hours earlier, Melissa's P.O.V:

Melissa didn't have a clue about what was going on. Everyone was rushing around, shoving things into boxes and some people were even burning things. But not just any old things, important information. Like stuff about the kids, about themselves. Important documents. She had to ask Cancellor Paige. Melissa had to know what was going on. So here she was walking down the long corridor trying to avoid getting hit with everyone running. It seemed like everyone knew what was going on except her. When she reached the office, she saw the chancellor talking into a video. She knocked. She quickly turned her head towards Melissa.

"Chancellor what's going on?" Melissa asked stepping fully into the room, whoever was going to watch this video would see Melissa.

"Well, hello Melissa. I am just talking to our expirements in the Maze. Anyways... The Flare is a disease..." Melissa droned out whatever the Chancellor was saying. After a few minutes she started to hear screaming. When Melissa looked behind her, she saw people with guns, shooting her co workers. Then she heard a loud bang within the room and glanced over at Paige. Who was now dead. She glanced at the computer the video was still recording. This was her chance to tell Thomas and Avery who they were. She ran to the screen.

"Thomas and Avery, I speak to you two directly. Whatever Chancellor Paige told you was a lie, besides the part about the Flare, that stuff was true. But I am about to tell you who you are. You are..."

AVERY'S P.O.V:

"You are Brother and sister. My brother and sister..." Melissa didn't get a chance to say anything else before she cried out. Crismon red colored her white lab coat. Melissa looked down and looked back up at the screen.

"I'm sorry." She said before falling to the ground. Avey looked around herself, everything was distroyed and everyone that was in the room was dead. Very dead. Avery couldn't believe this. She looked into the room that Paige and Melissa, her sister was in. Avery turned to Thomas, who was watching her. Her eyes started to tear up, tears threatening to spill out. Thomas looked the same way. Avery ran towards her brother and hugged him.

"Your my brother." Thomas hugged her back just as tight.

"And your my sister."

"Guys.." Minho's voice had a urgency to it. Thomas let go and looked up. There stood Gally. A gun in hand. The gun aimed at Thomas.

"Gally put the gun down and you can come with us. You can be free of the Maze." Thomas said slowly.

"I can't. I have to kill you. I don't trust you." Gally said. Avery could see the tears in his eyes. But she also noticed that his neck was bleeding. He was stung.

"Thomas, he was stung." Avery said standing next to her brother.

"Gally please. Listen. You can come with us. Just resist it. You can come with us and we can help you. Please just put the gun down."

"Don't you see, I can't. If I do, I am proving to myself that I am weak and I am not weak." Gally said and fired. Avery was pushed out of the way by Thomas and pulled away by Minho. Chuck flew past her and infront of Thomas. When Avery looked up Gally had a spear in his chest. Avery looked next to her at Minho. Guilt was clear on his face. She knew he felt bad. She grabbed his hand. He was shaking a little. Avery looked at Gally. She started to cry. Gally was one of her best friends in the Glade. He was always there for her when she needed him, or if one of the guys was picking on her Gally would threaten to kill them if they ever did it again. But she also heard more crying. Thomas. She looked down at Thomas holding Chuck in his arms. Avery cried harder Chuck was like a little brother to her. She watched as Chuck gave Thomas a little figure. She didn`t know what it was but she knew it meant a lot. Thomas cried harder.

A lot had happened after that. While everyone was crying over the losses that they had endured that day, people in black suits came in and took them. They were forcing them outside. Avery went with Minho. Both in shock but they were able to run. Thomas had to be dragged out. The dusty air hit them when they went outside. Sand was everywhere and the sun was scorching and a helicopter was waiting for them. All twelve of the survivors climbed into the back. There was just enough room. As they took off they got higher and higher once they were high enough, they could look around. Then they saw it. In the distance stood the Maze with the Glade still on fire from the night before. Most of them were wondering how they never heard anything or how they could never see it when they were on top of the Maze. But one person in particular was thinking about something else. And that was Avery. She kept thinking about Melissa. She saw her get shot on the video, and seen her fall to the floor. But back in the room, when Avery looked, she saw no body.
