Chapter 5: Taken by surprise.
-"Bloody hell, it's locked!" Mavis looked into all the cracks of the wall, under the carpet... No key!
-"Mavis, calm down! The key can't be gone like that. Although... it might be for the best, at least we tried our best, so, we should just forget it. " Jonathan said, more relieved than disappointed, turned to leave, but Mavis didn't want to give up, not this easily.
-"No, you don't understand, if my father took the key with him, it's because that he suspects that someone broke into the office and..." Jonathan looked at Mavis intensely.
-"Don't make me say: « I told you so!»" Jonathan leaned against the wall, satisfied with his small reply. Mavis sighed sadly and stood beside her zing.
-"You were right...I was careless. But this diary is the only thing that connects me to my mother because my father didn't even tell me anything about how they met!" A tear ran down her cheek, which broke the heart of Jonathan. He took her in his arms to comfort her.
-"If he's so mysterious, he might have some reasons... I'm afraid to ask, but wouldn't it be possible to steal the key from your father?"
-"But he surely will keep the key on him now, no matter where he'll go, and..." Mavis whimpered.
-"Doesn't matter, we can still try." Jonathan replied boldly.
-"Ha! I might as well shove a stake in my heart! It's impossible to take something from him without getting caught, his senses are just too sharp..." Mavis wiped her tears with the back of the hand, and suddenly became wide-eyed, just having thought of an idea.
-"But... We don't have to enter through the door! " she exclaimed.
They went outside, in a little garden filled with all kinds of pumpkins on the side of the hotel. Mavis turned into a bat.
-"Lets go!" She grabbed Jonathan by the back of his T-shirt and flew straight up. During the flight from the little garden to the window of the office, Jonathan had closed his eyes. Mavis was a lot weaker than her father and she had some troubles bringing him towards the room.
-"Here we are... and I'm still alive!" Jonathan blurted out, making Mavis looking a little angry.
-"I was joking, I will always trust you..." He smiled and looked at the room.
-"You have to be kidding, I had forgotten it was so dark here, I can't see a thing... Why does your father always have to love the darkness like this?"
-"Wait, Jonathan, I'll lit a candle..." Mavis, having planned everything, brought a box of matches and lit a candle on the big black desk. The room was larger than it appeared at first. He remained speechless at the sight of the swords that decorated the walls, as well as the armors and a large world map...
MEANWHILE.
Dracula came out of his room with the uncomfortable feeling that someone was delving into his privacy. He growled, walking at a rapid towards the door of his office. The distance between him and his office's door was about...
30 meters...
IN THE OFFICE.
-"Wait, the last time, when I entered, you were reading the journal... How were you able to, with so much darkness?!" Jonathan said with some amazement in his voice.
-"Vampires can see in the dark. But I can't perceive the colors and objects with that much accuracy in the room either. Last time, I didn't use a candle from fear of Dad catching me red-handed. " Mavis flatly replied.
-"You never cease to amaze me, Mavis!" he replied while watching her approach a shelf on the opposite wall.
-"I can't believe it... The diary was right, my father really has traveled." She admired the various souvenirs, postcards, exotic plants... all coming from all the corners of the world. "This is fantastic!"
20 meters...
-"You too, will soon start a collection!"Jonathan took her hand and approached an old chest in the corner of the room.
-"The missing page may be inside..." suggested Mavis. Jonathan didn't want to open it but he wanted to prove to his girlfriend that he was brave. He hesitated, then, finally, he knelt and opened it.
-"Whoa!"
-"What are these things? Why are they burned?" Mavis rummaged through it and found pictures, frames, vases... all damaged. Jonathan stood, uncomfortable, when he realized where all these things came from. Mavis took a necklace, a pendant with a golden heart, a red ruby was embedded in it.
10 meters...
-"Looks like we can open it..." The candle went out, plunging the room into total darkness. They shrieked a little, and then laughed.
-"It really freaked me out!", both said in unison.
-"Haha, I will relight the candle...", Mavis said, uneasy.
B A M !
A gust of wind almost lifted Mavis and Jonathan from the ground. They turned to see where that came from, scared. Instinctively, Mavis took the hand of Jonathan, seeking comfort. They stood in the middle of the room, petrified. The door was opened violently, yes, it was locked, but it wasn't a problem for Dracula. He stood firmly in front of them, with a stern look, his eyes were red and his fangs were longer. His "demonic" look, for some reason, was looking more threatening than usual. Mavis never had seen him like this, she was afraid, because this time, it was Jonathan and her that he stared at, angrily.
A FEW MOMENTS LATER.
Mavis went into her room, tears in her eyes. Dracula was behind her, still looking stern.
-"I'm sorry, Dad...Please don't do anything to Jonathan, it was my idea, and my fault."
-"Jonathan is in his room, and I don't have any intention to harm him." Dracula said dryly, but sounding sincere.
-"You're angry, huh..." Mavis gave a little pout as when she was little and made a mistake.
-"No, just disappointed. I trusted you! You gave me your word." Dracula answered, with a tired voice.
-"I know but... We're even now..." she said in a small voice, still remembering the lies of her father, hoping to guilt him.
-"This is not the same thing!" he sighed, "You disappoint me greatly." He used his power of telekinesis to fetch his diary that Mavis had hidden under her pillow. He walked toward the door.
-"Dad..." Mavis could not continue her sentence because his father had just slammed the door. She was alone and collapsed on her bed. She was heartbroken to have disappointed his father, she hated to see him so unhappy. She fell asleep fully dressed, exhausted by that night.

-"If I die, you'll never see your mother again. I will repeat myself one last time : Tell him to go! Now!"
Martha held back her tears and when Dracula was done with Drake, she murmured:
-"Vlad, go away."
Dracula released Drake, who fell on the sand. The Count turned to look at Martha, his eyes turning blue again and his fangs retracting.
-"What?"
-"Pl...Please go away...Please.
-"But... I don't understand." Dracula approached her and wanted to caress her face, but she pulled away and looked away.
-"Goodbye, Vlad." She slipped something in his hand. Drake pulled her violently by the arm, looking furiously at Dracula, before they both turned into bats. Dracula watched them fly silently and saw in his hand a little postcard left by Martha.
-"Paradise, you will find in Hawaii." He whispered, heartbroken.
TWO DAYS LATER.
Rosy was awakened by someone banging particularly hard at the front door. She left her room and rushed into the hall of the mansion. "Who could be there at this hour?" she thought to herself. The sun was still up, it was around 4:00 pm. She opened the door, while being prudent and suspicious.
-"Who is this?"
-"It's me, Frank."
-"Frank!? But you know that I sleep at this hour..." Rosy said while yawning.
-"Yes, I'm sorry but it's an emergency, we need your help... Drac is back."
Rosy, Frank and Eunice hid behind a tree trunk at the entrance of the village.
-"Oh no..."
Several people were lying on the ground, lifeless. Blood was spilled on the ground and on the walls of the houses. Other people - still - living looked for survivors. Shock and confusion could be read on their faces. No one knew what had happened in such a short time.
-"There's no doubt, he's really back..." Franck said in a morose tone.
-"And in a very bad mood." Eunice went on. Rosy said nothing, she couldn't believe such a thing. She focused on his nephew and after a great effort opened his eyes and turned into a bat. She had sensed his energy, he was back at the mansion. Franck, Eunice and she had must have went past him on the way to the village, a few minutes ago. She went into the bedroom of his nephew, he was sitting against the wall in a dark corner. When she had closed the door , he looked up. His eyes were still red.
-"Vlad, what happened to you?" She asked him, worried. She sat down beside him and put an arm around his shoulders. She expected him to push her back, but, to her surprise, he didn't.
-"She...She left me...he whispered."
-"What do you mean? Who left you?"
Dracula showed him the postcard.
-"Martha...I met her in Hawaii... and... we zinged." He explained.
-"But it's wonderful! Why have you committed all these atrocities, then?"
-"Another vampire came for her. She had been promised in marriage to him. We fought but... A tear ran down his cheek." He continued :
-"He's holding her mother as a captive, she had to choose, no, she had no choice. They spoke by telepathy but that did not stop me to listen... She was crying when she followed him." He looked at his aunt in the eye.
-"It was the first time I felt it. I felt loved and, for the first time I loved... I love her...And she left."
Rosy hugged him tightly against her and finally, he poured all the tears he had been holding for so long.
-"Don't worry, nothing is lost. But first, we have to find a new home." she said.

Mavis out back the sheet on her bad. She had found it, resting on the cushion beside her when she woke up. This page was the missing one in the diary, no doubts. Her whole body was shaking. Her father had killed half a village when her mother had abandoned him. She knew what her father had felt because when Jonathan left her on her 118th birthday, she was very unhappy, sad, and heartbroken... but she would never killed someone! She buried her head in her arms to try not to cry... of fear. A voice startled her:
-"What a pity that you had to read it..."
