Chapiter 6: Lights and Shadows.
Mavis looked all around about her.
- "Who... Who's there?" she asked, startled. She heard a chuckle echoing in her room. She shivered and nervously went to her wardrobe.
- "Who's there?" She asked once more as she opened the wardrobe's door. Nothing. She closed it and walked over to a chest containing all her old toys. She opened it.
- "But who are you and where are you hiding?" She closed the trunk and sat on her bed.
- "You seem to be afraid..." Said the voice.
- "I am not afraid of anything!" Mavis shouted at the mysterious being, partly to convince herself, as she leaned over and looked under her bed. She saw two glowing blue lights, she thought, until she quickly realized that they were actually eyes. Startled, she let a yelp of surprise and quickly stood up.
- "I wouldn't be so sure, you reek of fear and self-doubts..." A shadow crept over the wall. Mavis stared at it, watching as the shadow slowly move through various objects and items, until it finally stopped on the wall directly in front of her.
- "You are a cat?" Mavis said, being torn between being a bit scared and curious.
- "Well...The shadow of a cat, to be more accurate." said the mysterious being. Mavis moved to the side and quickly blew out three candles that lit part of the room. The shadowy cat disappeared and reappeared shortly after on another wall.
- "Hmm... That wasn't very nice. I wouldn't blow the other candles, if I were you. Just a little advice." it answered tauntingly.
- "Or else?" Mavis said defiantly, crossing her arms. A little laugh was the only answer she got. The "cat" meowed before sliding under the door.
- "Where are you going?" Mavis ran to open the door and looked for the shadow on the wall in front of her door.
- "Mavis... Is that your name? You never look where you should be..." Mavis turned and looked at the direction where the voice came from. The shadow of the cat was now on a large vase, 2 yards away from her. Mavis leaped to catch him, but failed miserably, breaking the vase instead.
- "Do I have to remind you that I'm only a shadow?." the being taunted Mavis with a twinge of amusement in its voice.
- "Does my dad knows that you are here?" was all she could think to answer.
- "What would your father think if you told him that the shadow of a cat was a stowaway inside the walls of his precious hotel? He may even decide to no longer speak to you, thinking it of a ploy to get his attention, hmm? Hahaha..." the shadowy cat whispered.
- "Shut up!" Mavis angrily shouted while pursuing the shadow into the hall where she pushed several guests without paying attention to them.
- "Come back here!" she followed him, and, after a few minutes, she finally noticed that she were now at the cemetery next to the hotel.
- "Where is he now? This isn't possible..." Mavis looked at each tombstone, unable to find the mysterious being.
Dracula walked around in circles in his room, constantly pacing back and forth. His friends had noticed that something was wrong with him but he assured them that everything was fine and perfectly normal. He pondered the events that had happened the night before. Mavis barged in his office, had stolen his diary...He had no idea that all of that would have happened so quickly...
- "Perhaps I was a little hard with her? I was very cold and distant yesterday. I haven't talked to her, or Jonathan, or anyone else for that matter..." he muttered to himself. He knew that Mavis would sooner or later ask about the past, about him and Martha. It is normal, after all, that Mavis wants to learn about the past of her parents, all children do. Doubly so for Mavis, since she never knew her mother.
He stopped in his tracks. "I should go talk to her" he said to himself. "But she shouldn't have done that!" He resumed walking and thinking with his hands behind his back, torn between two choices. Either doing nothing and praying that Mavis will lose interest about the past, or tell her everything that has happened, possibly telling her about the darker side of himself.
- "I must be dreaming... I should go now." she thought, and yet, Mavis did not want to return to the castle for fear of meeting her father. She felt like there were no places where she could feel safe, after having read that missing page. She decided to wander at the garden for a while, while gathering her thoughts.
- "Don't leave, at least not until I showed you something." Mavis turned around and found the "cat" in front of her, sitting on a grave. It looked normal, a black cat at night with bright blue eyes... Although a cat that can speak is anything but normal...
- "You should see your face! " he exclaimed playfully.
- "And you? You are the shade I pursued. I recognize your eyes. What happened?" she asked, now curious.
- "I live in the cemetery, I'm whole here, but, outside, I'm only a shadow." he answered sincerely.
Mavis looked at him, still a bit surprised.
- "What's your name?" she asked.
- "Salem." he shot back.
- "Ok... Salem, why did you bring me here?" she inquired.
- "Come, follow me little vampire..." Salem jumped on the floor and followed a narrow path with tall grass. The deeper they followed that path, the more worn out and damaged the graves looked like.
- "I never came here, this place gives me the shivers! " exclaimed Mavis. She looked at Salem and felt like he was smiling.
- "What you will see is unique, and you may never see anything like that ever again..." Salem answered thoughtfully, while sighing, "If only you had not read that page, that page should never had been read, especially by you."
- "What do you mean by that?" Mavis replied, alarmed and very curious at the same time.
- "Your father had torn this page because he was ashamed of what he had done. He wanted to forget this moment." he answered dryly.
They walked in silence for a few minutes in the old cemetery when Mavis stopped short and asked the cat.
- "Wait a minute... How do you know all this, what was written on that page...?" but Salem was no longer there. She was all alone. She looked all around her. The place was completely unknown to her, apart from some incredibly old graves, weeds and a path in poor condition, she was all alone. Clouds hid the full moon and Mavis found herself in almost complete darkness.
- "Here I am alone. Once again. She had never been afraid of the dark because she had always lived the night, but the simple fact that her father could show up at any time as he had done in his office, she was afraid. She sat against a wall and curled, putting her head on her knees.
- "Mom, help me, I beg you." She could hear the wind blowing, the faint sound of water flowing from a small stream not far from her. When everything stopped, she raised her head and looked at the motionless branches of trees, leaves that only a few seconds before were circling above the ground and were now suspended in the air and even the sound of water had ceased.
A hand landed on her head and gently stroked her.
- "Shhh..." said a reassuring voice, soft and gentle. Mavis stood up and looked at whoever said that. Her eyes widened, her mouth opened in shock. She could not believe her eyes, who was therebefore her, a glossy silver and blue form began to take shape.
- "Shh...You have nothing to fear..." The lady now fully visible gently held Mavis' hand. She had beautiful brown wavy hair and a long black necklace with a sparkling purple around her neck. Mavis had never seen such a beautiful woman before... And yet, she did, that woman looked very familiar...
- "M... Mom?" said Mavis, bewildered, tears in her eyes and her heart full of hope.
Did you like it? :)
