Chapter 7: All his victims.
-"M...Mom?"
Her eyesight became a blur and everything disappeared as soon as she uttered that word. Then, another sight unfolded itself before her very eyes. The gray trees had been replaced by high stone walls, the floor was cold and dark, it was still night but chandeliers had replaced the moon and lit a large room with high ceilings. Mavis was standing in the middle of it. She looked all around her and saw several rows of benches on which people sat waiting for an event to come. A man with a murderous face looked at her direction and said :
-"I'm proud of Drake, he really outdid himself to achieve his purposes... What luck he has to have found a way!"
-"Hmm?... But what do you mean? And where are we?" Mavis asked, puzzled.
-"Yes indeed! I can't wait to see how she's dressed!" Said a voice behind Mavis. She turned and saw an old lady with blood red lips looking in her direction as well . This is where she realized they were not looking at her, they looked through her! The man and the old lady spoke as if she didn't exist! To be sure, she approached the old lady and put her hand over her eyes as if it was the moon. But the lady didn't notice, went back straight and looked straight ahead.
-"This isn't normal ..." Mavis muttered to herself, worried. She examined each person to try finding a familiar face that she knew, but to no avail, they all seemed so cruel, mean... and evil… She had never seen so many vampires together. She only knew she was in a small castle, surely, and that something important was going to happen.
-"I should get our of their way, they cannot see me or hear me, but if they were to bump on me, that would blow my cover..." At that moment, a man passed through her and stood at the end of a black velvet carpet , putting himself in front of all the vampires. He had dark brown hair and one eye was brown and the other one green. He was in a tuxedo. Mavis was surprised and shocked when he passed through her, like she was a ghost. She followed him a bit and looked at his face. She was frightened by his hard and stern look.
-"Drake..." She whispered, uneasy.
The two heavy wooden doors at the end of the room opened and everyone became silent. Mavis couldn't help but shiver at the sight of Drake smiling wickedly and looked at the person who had just entered. A girl with long brown hair slowly approached . She wore a long blood red dress. Two grandchildrens held the dress two meters behind her. She held in her hands a bouquet of black roses and a veil was hiding her face. She stood next to Drake in such a manner that Mavis was between them.
-"A wedding!" She exclaimed. Drake lifted the bride's veil when an old man stood before them and began the ceremony. Later, he asked:
-"Drake, do you want Martha as your wife?"
-"Yes, I do." He replied proudly.
-"Martha, do you want Drake as your husband?"
Martha didn't answer. She was sad and a tear rolled down his cheek.
-"Hrm... I..." She obviously didn't wanted to answer that, struggling to even produce the simplest of syllables.
Drake looked at her sternly. Mavis had tears in her eyes, she couldn't imagine marrying someone she didn't like.
-"No, no... It's with dad you're married, not with him!" She says, horrified. But she wasn't part of the scene, she could only observe and could not interfere in any way.
-"Please, Daddy... Rosy told you that nothing was lost. You can still do something! I don't understand, you should be there and stop this!" She cried, aware that nobody heard. Her mother was going to say "yes" when, with a deafening noise, the heavy doors of the hall were ejected and came crashing 10 meters behind Drake, Martha, all vampires... and of course Mavis, still invisible to all.
-"I'm not invited?" Dracula asked sarcastically. He didn't wait for an answer and walked down the aisle, claws out. Flames seemed to come from his eyes. Mavis was a bit frightened yet relieved, stepped back a few feet and looked with the greatest attention the scene that would unfold before her eyes :
Drake pushed Martha aside and prepared for battle. Mavis noticed that her father, mother and Drake had changed. How much time had passed between her father's depression and this very moment she was watching?
-"You still dare to come here? Don't you understand that she doesn't want you?"Drake asked mockingly.
-"I'm not so stupid, you used her mother's life to blackmail her. Such a shady tactic! Don't you have any pride?! Still... No matter. I was always stronger than you, still am. Remember it well!" With these words he jumped on Drake. Other vampires came to join the duel that was everything but fair: 30 against the count.
Rosy suddenly entered and rushed to Martha to lead her outside. Mavis followed them, running. They crossed the lobby of the small castle and found themselves out.
-"Martha, I suppose? You're so pretty! Don't worry, it's over now, everything will be fine." Rosy says calmly.
-"What's going on?! You're a friend of Vlad? I can't leave him there! He needs me!" Martha replied, panicked and concerned for the man she loves.
-"Don't worry, he'll be fine, at least I hope so... No, no, don't cry... Every night, Vlad hasn't stopped thinking about how to get you back. He trained hard, he developed more power than me during my long life..." At that moment they heard a roar and then a terrifying scream that echoed from the hall.
-"This is all my fault! I never wanted all of this to happen! I love him so much!" Martha exclaimed, tears in her eyes.
-"I don't doubt that, Martha... Where are your parents? I understand that they were in trouble…" Rosy asked.
-"It's too late now. It's too late..." Murmured the young woman. Rosy understood and embraced her in her arms to comfort her.
-"I'm Vlad's aunt. We'll watch over you. Vlad loves you and will never stop loving you." She tentatively tried to comfort Martha.
Mavis didn't know what to think. While the vision began to dissipate and she came back in the cemetery, she could not help but wonder what her father had done to the others and if Drake had survived or died.

-"Mavis? Do you understand now?"
-"Mom... But why?"
-"I don't have much time. I came to help you."
-"What should I understand? I miss you and I want you to have all the time you want, that you could stay with me... I feel so alone."
-"But you're not alone... I'm still here in your heart." Martha pointed to the place where Mavis' heart should beat if she wasn't a vampire.
-"And that's what I want to say. Your father did a lot of terrible things but it is the past... The day I thought I would never be happy -the vision I sent you- truly happened. He kept his word. He swore he would protect me and he did until the end. If I 'm dead it's not his fault."
-"But..."
-" Your father will never hurt you, he loves you too much for that. I know this is hard for you but if you want to know more about his past, then you shouldn't ignore a part of the truth." Martha said has she began to disappear and go away.
-"Wait! What happened to the other vampires, all the guests? They were at least 50!"
-"I don't know how he did it but what I do know is that, more than ever, these vampires have returned to bother us... I'm proud of you, sweetie... I've already said that one night when you were still a child. For a few minutes I played with you and spoked to you. I love you..." She disappeared in a cloud of blue and silver dust.
Her mother had appeared before her apparently for the second time in a short time. But what are those few minutes in the life of a girl who had almost never seen her mother? Not much, it's too short. These fickle memories will fly and just disappear...
-"Mavis..."
-"Salem?"
-"So... What happened?" Salem approached Mavis.
-"My mother came... She showed me... a kind of vision. It was very striking because I actually witnessed the scene."
- "What scene?" Salem asked suddenly worried.
-"Well... My mother had to marry Drake against her will and then my father came... But you should know, that's why you brought me here, right? You wanted to show me my mother isn't it ?"
-"Hmm… Yes of course!"
-"There is just something I want to know... I wonder what my father did when he fought with these vampires in the great room."
-"Your mother didn't tell you anything?" Salem asked quickly. He jumped over the low wall to be at the same height as Mavis.
-"No, she didn't know either. Do you?"
-"But I don't need to tell you..." He plunged his bright blue eyes in the eyes of Mavis, gazing at her. "You know already, no? What has he ever done? And what will he perhaps?" He jumped the wall and spun at high speed in the tall grass. Mavis shivered. Nobody knew what her father had done to all the guests, to Drake, to these two small children vampires who held the dress of her mother at the wedding... But she knew!
-"But he killed... Again! Again and again the same thing!" A sudden anger seized her. "Was there no other solution? No other way? My father is a murderer! A murderer..." The anger progressed smoothly in her mind, too smoothly, and Mavis hid her face with her hands. She wanted to keep the tears from falling but it was too difficult.
-"Why? Is his past only filled with blood, murder and anger? I'm afraid that he'll kill again, Mom is gone and nothing could stop him now!" At that time dozens of bats flew as if to escape something. Mavis felt indeed a commanding presence and an intense fear seized her.
-"Mavis... What are you doing here? I... Are you okay?"
Mavis didn't answer. She turned slowly as if she was afraid that her father would attack.
-"But... you're pale, I... Look, I'm really sorry, I know you ask a lot of questions about your mom but you must understand that it's difficult for me too." Dracula approached her but Mavis stepped back. He noticed and was surprised, he didn't insist, however, and stayed where he was.
-"You have to understand. I'll tell you everything in time because if I told you now, I'm afraid to see you get scared, you're not ready..." Seeing that Mavis wasn't listening, he stopped talking and asked instead:
-"Mavis you... Do you hear me?" Mavis was standing in front of him, with a glassy look. A small bright blue glow in her eyes. It wasn't her father she saw, it was a young man, no, an old lady, ah no, it was now a little child... This spirit changed shapes constantly, once a girl, once a boy... All the faces she saw were those of humans, but it wasn't the most important thing, what mattered to her was that she knew how they all died. It seemed that the hundreds of her dad's victims had all of a sudden decided to gather in one body. The faces changed more quickly.
-"Enough!" She cried in despair. The spirit disappeared and Mavis saw her father watching, looking completely surprised.
-"Hrmmm... All is well?" Dracula asked, worried?
-"No, no. Everything's wrong, wrong, wrong!" She shouted while holding her head with her hands, as if to hold her very sanity.
-"You need to explain. What did you read exactly in my journal?" He asked, worried. What he heard froze his blood :
-"Everthing..." She simply replied, coldy.
She then turned into a bat and flew away into the night at full speed. Her father, unable to follow his daughter, not for lack of speed but because he didn't knew what he should do if he caught up to her, began to think as he had never done before.
-" Mavis has read everything... No, it isn't possible. But if this is the case... I have to fix everything, I still control the situation..." He let out a long sigh of sadness and flew to the hotel. Before leaving, he could have sworn seeing two bright blue eyes watching him...
This discussion -the strangest they had- had lasted only a few minutes but seemed like an eternity to Mavis and Dracula. Some memories are painful and remains etched in your mind... forever.
