Hello again fellow readers and writers of . Ultimatehero with the next chapter of kicking it in kanto. Previously, we joined Myron in Dana as they were still off to a slow start in hophop town where Myron was too absorbed in seeing the city instead of getting to work on the journey. While the two were lounging about a burger stand, their daredevil friend Jenny had arrived a little off point from cerulean. It appears that abra's psychic power needs a little work. In order to help him along the way, Jenny challenged Myron to a battle with him ending up the loser. As she left for cerulean, she told Myron to work on his battle skills while she was gone.
Hours later, Dana taught Myron a little about what she learned. Now, becoming just a little wiser, the two prepare to set out to find their first gym battle. Now, we turn the camera to the other daredevil of the wayside group, Maurecia as she plans to take on the cerulean city gym leader. But upon arrival, she'll find that someone has taken the challenge from under her nose.
Chapter 5: Maurecia vs Zekro!
Cerulean city, the home of the cerulean sisters and the cascade badge. Trainers looking to compete in the Pokémon league come by here to challenge the beauties for a chance at the badge. Or at least would if they had any motivation for battle. These days, the youngest sister Misty takes care of the challengers. Being a self-proclaimed water type master, this gym leader does not play around. It would take more than a simple electric type Pokémon to fell her team of water Pokémon.
When Maurecia told people that she was here to challenge the gym with her only Pokémon being her fire-type, she did not get the best of reactions. People laughed and held their sides after hearing this. But the bladder girl wasn't deterred. She declared that she wouldn't let something so stupid as type advantages keep her from winning her first badge. She rolled her way towards the aquarium/ gym in the center of town.
"Here it is. The cerulean city gym." Said Maurecia as she had took a good look at it from outside. The roof looked like that of a big top with yellow and pink lines circling the top. A dewgong was on top of the words "cerulean gym" with a set of white waves circling the rim of the building. Well Todd jr, you ready for your first gym battle?" She asked her charmander who looked a bit shaken up just by the thought of the type of gym.
(I…I don't know. Fire types don't mix well with water. Aren't we supposed to capture a couple of other Pokémon before challenging the gym?") He replied. Of course, not being able to understand him, Maurecia proceeded inside with Todd jr. close behind. Upon entering, they saw a large tank filled with many water type Pokémon ranging from horsea to gyarados.
"Waoh, look at all these Pokémon. Are all these water types?" Asked an impressed Maurecia. Inside the tank, all the water Pokémon took a look at Todd jr. and proceeded to pick at him. Seeing a little fire type in their domain was like a joke to them and they were all laughing. Soon, they moved on further down the hall in search of the gym leader when they saw a pair of double doors wide open on the left side of the hall. As they took a look, they saw two people on opposite sides of a large swimming pool with floating platforms. On one side was the tomboyish water-type specialist herself, Misty. She had short orange hair done in twin bangs that came to the sides of her face.
She had eyes as blue as the water that her Pokémon commands and wore a light blue jacket over a darker blue swim suit over her peach skin.
On the other side of the field seemed to be a trainer about a couple of years older than Maurecia. He had short blonde hair with a bang that covered his right green eye. He was white and wore a dark green jacket over his black shirt and wore the same color jeans with brown boots. To the far right of the field was one of the older sisters. She had long blond hair, blue eyes and wore a red swim suit.
"This battle will be between gym leader Misty of cerulean city and challenger Zekro of glenwooid town. Each battler will use two Pokémon. The last Pokémon standing will be the winner.
"No way! It's a gym battle. Looks like someone already beat us to it." Said a disappointed Maurecia.
(Whew…I don't know who this guy is, but he's my hero. I'm not sure I could've have even stepped onto the field much less battle.) Said Todd jr. relived.
"Trainers, send out your Pokémon!" Shouted the sister.
"Ladies first, Misty." Said Zekro,
"My, aren't we the gentleman? She replied as she had took out a poke ball from her jacket pocket. All right horsea, let's go! She shouted as a white light emerged from her poke ball as it opened. Seconds later, a blue, sea horse Pokémon had surfaced from the water. It had a large sucker for it's mouth, red eyes, and a yellow under belly.
"Looks pretty scrawny. Then again, knowing it's owned by a gym leader, I'm sure it's plenty strong. So allow me to present my counter measure! Zekro said as he had took a poke ball from his belt. Turtwig, I choose you! The teen shouted as he had tossed his poke ball into the air releasing a stream of white energy onto a platform upon being opened. After the Pokémon materialized, it revealed to be a Pokémon resembling a turtle with a light green head and a yellow under jaw. It had a twig leaf at the top of it's head and a black and brown shell on its back.
"Wonder what that one is." Said Maurecia as she pulled out her pokedex.
Turtwig, the tiny leaf Pokémon
The shell on its back is made of soil. It uses it's large jaw to break open nut shells.
"Oh, a grass type huh? Smart choice. Said Misty. But it'll take more than smarts to win against me! Horsea, use water gun! She commnded as Horsea had shot a gyser of water at turtwig.
"Turtwig, dodge it and jump to the next platform!" Commanded Zekro. Turtwig had jumped to the next platform avoiding the water gun.
"Don't let it get away Horsea! Keep using water gun!" Mist commanded as Horsea began to fire and miss time and time again. However, turtwig did not have the energy to dodge forever and had finally got hit. The force of the water nearly pushed him over the platform and into the water.
"Turtwig, are you okay?" Asked its trainer. Turtwig had shook off the water and had returned to the center of the platform. All right. Then let's pay her back with a little razor leaf!"
As he commanded, Turtwig had fired an array of razor sharp leaves at the water type.
"Ha! Like I'd let you get a hit like that in. Horsea, dive underwater!" Misty shouted as her Pokémon had submerged avoiding taking super-effective damage.
"Shoot! How's he supposed to land a hit like that?" Asked Maurecia.
"Alright horsea, use smokescreen!" She commanded. Her horsea had shot out of the ater and fired a black cloud of some towards turtwig.
"GOTCHA! Turtwig, use razor leaf and cut right through that fog!" Shouted Zekro. As turtwig fired it's attack, it went straight through the smokescreen and hit horsea for massive damage. Now, finish it with tackle attack!" Turtwig had launched off the platform and had managed to strike horsea before it reached the water. It had flew all the way back to Misty's side of the pool before landing in the water with a big splash. The next time it resurfaced, it was belly side up and was knocked out.
"Horsea is unable to battle! The winner of the first round is turtwig!" Shouted the sister.
"All right! Nice work buddy!" Zekro cheered which got a happy "twig" from turtwig.
"You did a great job Horsea. You take a good rest. Said Misty as she had returned her Pokémon to its poke ball. Well, it seem you've trained your grass type well."
"Thanks. I try." Zekro grinned as he rubbed his nose.
"Now, let's see how you two stand against this! Starmie, I choose you!" She shouted tossing another poke ball into the air. The Pokémon released looked like a giant starfish. It was purple and had to sets of five arms. In the middle was a large red jewel with a yellow crown surrounding it.
"Woah! That has to be the biggest starfish I've ever seen!" Said an amazed Maurecia as she had pulled out her pokedex once again.
Starmie, the starfish Pokémon
Starmie is the evolved form of Staryu.
The crystal gem embedded in its face is it source of power. It is capable of unleashing tremendous psychic powers.
"Breaking out the big guns huh? I can see you're going to make me work for that badge. Get ready Turtwig.! Said Zekro as Turtwig prepared itself for the next round.
"Starmie, lets start off with Hydro pump! She commanded as the large starfish Pokémon had fired a large geyser of water from it's gem.
"Turtwig, dodge it and retaliate with razor leaf!" Shouted Zekro as turtwig had dodged the water attack and landed a direct hit on starmie with it's razor leaf.
"Awesome. This battle is done!" Said Zekro already calling the end of the fight.
"Don't be too sure. Misty replied. Starmie, use recover!" She shouted as Starmie began glowing. In mere seconds, all the damage it had taken from the razor leaf attack was gone.
"It recovered its health? Perfect. Zekro groaned. Fine, then we'll just have to finish this so fast that you won't be able to recover! Turtwig, use razor leaf again!" Turtwig had once again fired a stream of razor sharp leaves in hopes of damaging the water type.
"Not this time! Starmie, use barrier!" Misty shouted. Just before the razor leaf hit, Starmie was enveloped in a bright light. It then looked like a coating of glass was covering it. The razor leaves had just bounced off the water type.
"What the?! The razor leaf didn't work?" Zekro asked astonished.
" Barrier greatly raises the physical defense of it's user. And for starmie, just enough to withstand your razor leaf. Now starmie, finish this with ice beam!" Commanded Misty. A lightr blue orb of energy formed in front of starmie's gem before firing at turtwig.
"Turtwig, get out of the way!" Zekro shouted. But it was too late. Turtwig was hit hard with the ice beam and fell flat on the platform with black swirls in it's eyes.
"Tiurtwig is unable to battle! This round goes to Starmie!" Shouted the cerulean sister as she had extened her arm over to Misty.
"All right! Way to go Starmie!" Cheered Misty.
"You did great Turtwig. You rest for now. Said Zekro as he returned turtwig to it's poke ball. Okay. So Your starmie has barrier, hydro pump, ice beam and recover. It's been raised to withstand physical attacks as well as recover health and return the damage with special attacks. It's going to be hard to beat this one. Luckily, I have just the partner to help me out! Zekro continued as he had pulled out another poke ball from his belt.
Elekid, let's finish this!" He shouted as he had released his second Pokémon. The Pokémon that was released was a small yellow Pokémon that had a confident smirk on it's face. It has two black lines going around it's lower body that stopped in front where it was sporting a black lightning bolt as a logo. It's ears were similar to that of a socket plug. It's arms were large with black lines surrounding them and claws at the end while it's legs were black and it's feet were round with claws as well.
"Another one?" Asked Maurecia as she had once again used her pokedex to register the Pokémon.
Elekid, the electric Pokémon
If it touches metal and discharges the electricity it has stored in it's body, it begins spinning it's arms rapidly to recharge itself.
"Seriously? An electric type? Did you catch Pokémon specifically for this gym battle?" Asked Misty.
"Of course not. It just happens to be a coincidence that my team currently counters yours. Zekro relied. But that's in the past. Now it's time for the last round! Elekid, use thunder punch on starmie!" Elekid had hopped from platform to platform approaching the water type as it begun charging electricity into it's left arm.
"Starmie, dive underwater!". Commanded starfish had dove into the pool just as elekid had reached it's platform.
"Stay sharp elekid. The minute thqt starmie pops up, you have to be ready to knock it back." Said Zekro. Elekid had checked it's surroundings waiting for the opposing Pokémon to show up.
"Alright starmie, use hydro pump!" She shouted as her Pokémon had finally surfaced from the pool and fired a gyser of water landing a direct hit on elekid sending him two platforms away.
"0u no! Elekidd, can you get up?" Asked Zekro. Elekid responded as it sstruggled to get up.
"Sorry, but this battle is over! Starmie, let's finish it with ice beam!" Commanded Misty looking to finish it. Starmie had followed it's command and leaped into the air and begun charging for its finishing ice beam attack.
"Shoot. Looks like he lost." Said Maurecia disappointed. Or it least it looked like it.
'Elekid, use light screen!" Zekro shouted with a grin on his face. Elekid had had quickly reacted as it covered itself in a reflective material not unlike starmie's barrier. The ice beam had bounced off of elekid.
"Wha? It knows light screen? Asked a shocked Misty.
"You're not the only one who likes to use defensive barriers. Now Elekid, charge at starmie and use thunder punch!" Said Zekro. Elekid had got up and rushed at starmie charging electricity into it's left arm.
"Like that's gonna work. Starmie, use barrier! Commanded Misty. Just before elekid's thunder punch made contact, starmie's barrier rose again rendering its attack useless.
"Don't you have any other tricks up your sleeve?" Asked Misty.
"As a matter of fact we do. Zekro replied. Elekid, break through that barrier with brick break!" Zekro commanded. Elekid had reared it's right fist back and thrusted it forward breaking the barrier and dealing bit of damage to starmie as well.
"Oh no! starmie!" Said Misty as she saw her Pokémon fly zoom across the field.
'Now elekid, let's finish this with your best thunder punch!" Said Zekro. Elekid had jumped into the air and had hovered over starmie for a few seconds before coming down with it's thunder punch hitting it on it's crystal gem center. After dealing the finishing blow, elekid had jumped back landing on another platform. Starmie was unable to move as its gem begun flashing signaling it was low on power.
"Starmie is unable to battle. The winner of the battle is elekid. Misty has no more Pokémon for battle. Which means the winner of the gym battle is Zekro from glemwood town!
'All right! Way to go elekid!" Zekro cheered giving his Pokémon a thumbs up. Elekid had returned the gesture.
"Nice. I really thought he was going to lose. This guy must have started his journey way earlier. It would explain why he's got two Pokémon with him." Said Maurecia. Moments later, Zekro was standing face to face with Mistey and her sister who was holding a small box.
"Well Zekro, I'm glad to say that was a great battle. Even though you have the type advantage, I could tell that you've raised your Pokémon well on your way here. And to commemorate your devotion to your pokemon, I present you with this, the cascade badge." Said Misty as she had handed Zekro a badge that as in the shape of a water droplet.
"Thank you Misty. Said Zekro as he had happily took the gym badge. Look elekid, this is our second badge! One step closer to the Pokémon league!
"Be bwe!" Said elekid in a happy tone.
"Thank you Misty. I'll always remember the battle we had here." Said Zekro before he stashed away the gym badge in a badge carrying case. The same one Maurecia got from nurse joy after she registered for the league. At least design wise. While her case was pink, Zekro's case was blue. In his case was another badge. It had a bright orange gem in the center and had multiple yellow triangles surrounding it. The design looked similar to a sun.
"Mind telling me what gym you're going to next?" Asked Misty.
"I think I may head for celadon city next. I hear that there's a superstore there along with it' gym. I'll need some more supplies if I'm going to make it any further." Zekro replied.
"Well, I wish you the best of luck on your journey. Here. Maybe these will help a bit.' Misty replied as she had took out a slip of paper and a small disc from her pocket. The slip of paper was a check for forty-eight hundred poke dollars and the disc was the tm for water pulse.
Your reward money and tm for water pulse. Teach it to a water Pokémon if you happen to catch one."
"Thanks. Well, I'll be seeing ya." Said Zekro as he had proceeded to leave for the Pokémon center. Though he didn't seem to notice Maurecia as he was walking out.
"Come on, Todd jr. We should-.
"Excuse me?" Asked the sister suddenly getting their attention. Are you here for a gym battle? If you are, then I'm afraid you're going to have to wait for a couple of hours.
"Oh no, I just came to check out the gym." Maurecia replied.
'Oh. I almost thought you were going to challenge the gym with that charmander." Aid the sister.
"Of course not. What kind of idiot would challenge a water type gym with a fire type Pokémon? Heh heh." Maurecia chuckled nervously before she rolled backwards on her way out of the gym.
Maurecia eventually went back to the Pokémon center to reconsider what she would do. But the minute she entered, she saw Zekro at the front desk picking up his Pokémon.
"There. You're Pokémon have been fully healed. Please come again and have a nice day." Said nurse joy as she bowed.
"Thank you nurse joy." Said Zekro as he packed away his Pokémon on his belt. But just as he was about to head out, Maurecia had stood in his way.
"Oh, hello. Can I help you?" He asked.
"I saw you in your gym battle against Misty. I have to know, where did you get Pokémon like that? Asked Maurecia.
"Why would you need to know? Zekro replied. Oh, you must be looking to challenge the cerulean gym. I see. What Pokémon do you have with you right now?"
"Um…right now..only my charmander." Said Maurecia rubbing the back of her head in embarrasement.
"You…you can't be serious." Said Zekro a little shocked.
"What? I got here by teleportation. I didn't exactly have the opportunity to skate all the way here and catch some other Pokémon. " Said Maurecia.
"Teleportation? Never mind, tell me later. You do understand that the flame on charmander's tail is linked to its life force right? What do you think will happen if enough water gets on its tail" Asked Zekro. Maurecia couldn't answer as she already had a clear idea of what might happen. But the expression on her face was all he needed to get her answer.
"Look, I wouldn't recommend challenging this gym just yet. In time you may find a way around that weakness. But right now, might I suggest heading for celadon city. That's where I'm heading. There, you'll at least have the type advantage. Hopefully, you'll catch some new pokemon on the way there. Said Zekro as he had left out the door. Maurecia had stood there for a few seconds before she had raced out the door after him.
"Hold on a minute! Maurecia said as she caught him as he was on the way to the city limits.
"Hmm? What is it now?" Asked Zekro.
"I want a battle!" Maurecia declared.
"A battle? Now?" Zekro replied.
"Yes now! Since I need to have more battles under my belt before I'm ready to take on a gym, you're a good place to start as any." Said Maurecia.
"Fine then. By the way, my name's Zekro.
"Maurecia." She said introducing herself.
The two met somewhere in the outskirts of the city.
"This will be a one-on-one style battle. That sound good to you?" Asked Zekro.
"Perfect. Now since you have one more team member than me, why don't you go first?' Asked Maurecia.
"If you insist. Turtwig, let's go!" Zekro shouted as he had tossed out turtwig as his choice.
"Turtwig!" It said after being released.
"Are you serious? Asked Maurecia in disbelief. Your not seriously going to use a grass type against my todd jr.?"
"You know Maurecia, had you been a bit more experienced, you could have walked into the cerulean gym with a fire type and would have walked out with a shiny new badge.
"What are you getting at?" Asked Maurecia.
"You'll learn many things on your journey. One of which is that type advantages never always mater. But I've said enough for now. Let's get this battle started!
"Right. Todd jr, your up!" Said Maurecia as her charmander had stood in front of her.
"Ladies first." Said Zekro.
"You're gonna regret that! Todd jr, use scratch! She commanded. Her charmander had charged at turtwig and dealt a direct hit. But for some reason, he didn't tell it to dodge. Follow it up with tail whip!"
Todd jr, then begun using tail whip lowering turtwig's defenses. Come on! Fight back! Otherwise, you're going to let turtwig get knocked out.
"Okay, if you insist. Turtwig, use tackle attack! Commanded Zekro. Turtwig had bashed Todd jr. in the gut with it's head knocking it back a few paces.
"Todd jr! Don't give up! Hit it with another scratch attack commanded maurecia.
'"Turtwig, withdraw!" Zekro commanded. Just before the attack hit, it had raised it's defense as it was covered in a blue light. The attack didn't even do enough damage for turtwig to notice it.
"Raising your defense, then I'll just have to bring it back down! Todd jr, tail whip again!" Commanded Maurecia.
"I don't think so. Turtwig, dodge it and strike with tackle!" Zekro shouted as Turtwig had evaded Todd jr's scratch and succeeded in hitting it with another tackle knocking it flat on its back. Now, finish it with razor leaf!" Turtwig had leapt into the air and had fired multiple razor sharp leaves down towards Todd jr.
"Oh no! Todd Jr.!" Maurecia screamed. Just as the leaves were closing in, Todd jr.'s gaze had sharpened before it had fired tiny flames from its mouth shooting down the razor leaves.
"Woah…Todd jr., did you just use ember?" Asked Maurecia stunned.
"Well, this is an interesting turn of events. You're saying your charmander just learned to use ember? Asked Zekro.
"I told you before. Teleportation. Didn't get any training in until now." Said Maurecia.
"Well, it's great that its learned a new move. But don't think that's gonna help you win this battle! Turtwig, Razor leaf again! Zekro shouted as Turtwig had fired another razor leaf at Todd jr.
"Todd jr., dodge it and hit turtwig with ember!" Shouted Maurecia. The minute it was vunerable, Todd jr. had shot turtwig with a close range ember that had caused STAB damage as well as super effective damage. Turtwig looked like it was about ready to give in.
"All right, time we finish it." Said Maurecia with a grin.
"Yes, yes it is. Zekro agreed. Turtwig, use synthesis!" After it heard its command, turtwig had stood up and directed its attention towards the shining sun. Soon, it was enveloped in a bright green light and all the damage from the battle begun to fade away until it was fully healed.
"Wait a minute, what just happened? Asked Maurecia
"Synthesis just happened. Zekro answered. Kind of like the move recover gym leader Misty uses. Except that the amount of damage healed is dependent on the weather. For example, the sunshine rapidly progresses the healing progress. Now it's as if turtwig just came back from the Pokémon center.
"Oh man, that's not fair!" Complained Maurecia.
"Sorry, but it is how it is. And now, Turtwig, tackle attack!" Zekro commanded.
"Todd jr. dodge it!" Maurecia shouted. Unfortunately, Todd jr. didn't have the strength left to dodge another attack and had took the hit. The attack sent him back to Maurecia knocked out cold.
"Oh man. That's my second loss." Said a disappointed Maurecia
"Well, you almost had me. If it hadn't been for synthesis, I would have lost. You're good for a beginner." Said Zekro. Say, what are you planning to do now?"
"I think I'll take your advice and go for celadon first. But it'll have to wait till I find my friend." Maurecia replied.
"Friend? Asked Zekro.
"Yeah. We kinda got separated when both of us were supposed to come here at the same time. If she doesn't show up tomorrow, I'll be on my way to celadon." Said Maurecia.
"Well Maurecia, I wish you the best of luck. Guess I'll be seein' ya." Said Zekro as he had returned turtwig and begun on his way out of the city.
"Come on todd jr." Let's get you healed up." Said Maurecia as she made her way to the Pokémon center.
After meeting a more experienced trainer, Maurecia rethinks her decision to take on a gym at the start of her journey. She now rests in cerulean city waiting to see if Jenny might ride by. On the morrow, she sets out for celadon city. With a brand new move, will they have what it takes to take on the gym there? Find out as the journey continues,,,,
Next time, Todd arrives in viridian city looking to get a good meal. But finds that most of the food is going missing. With a little help, they find the culprits who've been stealing the food from the hungry mouths of People and Pokémon alike.
Next time on Kicking it in Kanto,
