Okay...
We have an Alice, a 'Rabbit', a Caterpillar and Butterfly.
Who's next? Well, obviously the title...
But who are they?
Nora walked a good distance until she came out of the forest. She found a dirt road and followed that until she spotted a mansion on top of a hill. "Let's see if I can find anyone who can help me here." Nora walked all the way up to the front gate, which was left open, and called out. "Hello? Anyone here?" When no one answered, Nora walked right up to the house's door and knocked. No answer, but when she knocked the door opened slightly and she could hear a faint noise from inside. There were yelling voices, sneezing, and pots banging. Nora was strongly hesitant to going inside. But she needed help and there was no knowing where the next piece of civilization could be located.
Venturing through the mansion and following the noise, Nora eventually found herself outside the door of a giant kitchen. She peeked inside and gasped! "Cassandra?" The Dragon-Lady McAdams herself was standing in the kitchen wearing a purple ball gown. Along with her, was her daughter, Kimmie, in a similar pink dress, sneezing into a handkerchief like she was sick. And in the back by a cooking pot, she was dressed like a maid, but Nora was able to identify her as Brandy Silver.
"Cook!" Cassandra ordered over to Brandy. "More pepper into that soup! My daughter needs her nostrils cleared out if she's going to make an appearance at the party." Kimmie sneezed again, and Brandy nodded as she furiously shook more pepper into the pot. "Make sure you eat your entire bowl, Kimberly. As the Duchess' daughter you are expected to be a prime example of Enigmaland. Not to mention that the Queen would be furious if so much as one detail was missed!" Kimmie nodded at her mother before sneezing again.
"If anyone, I would have thought Cassandra would be the Queen of Hearts." Nora whispered her thoughts to herself. "But if she isn't, then who is?"
The door to the kitchen was pulled open, revealing Nora standing there. Cassandra and Kimmie took notice of her, and at the sound of quiet in the room, Brandy stopped stirring the large pot of soup. Nora froze, realizing that she had been caught spying. She looked to the side of the door, whoever gave her away was still standing there. Looking very much like his human counter-part, except for an addition of cat ears on the top of his head and a curling, black tail behind him, was a grinning (The) Serpent. But when Casandra spoke to him she said. "Move aside Cheshire Cat, you're in our guest's way." To which he purred and, in a single jump, landed on an open shelf on the opposite wall.
All eyes on her, Nora tried to talk. "I, uh, I knocked on the door. It was open so I let myself in."
"If it was open, you should have let yourself in without knocking." Cassandra stated.
"Uh…" Nora wasn't sure how to act with these people. They looked like people she knew and either had good, bad or complicated relationships with. But none of them seemed to know her at all, like she was a complete stranger. "That's considered rude where I'm from." Nora said.
"Well, around here if a door is open it's meant to be gone through." Cassandra asserted like it was common knowledge.
This woman may not be the Cassandra that Nora had previously met, but she was quite similar to her. "I-I'm sorry. Thank you for telling me. Are you the Duchess?"
"Duchess McAdams, thank you young lady." Cassandra nodded to her daughter. "This is my daughter, Kimberly." Kimmie curtsied, but sneezed when she was halfway down. "That is our cook, Miss Silver. More pepper!" Brandy almost curtsied but when back to the soup at Cassandra's order. "And that lazy thing on the shelf is my cat." She didn't even look at him, just pointed in his direction. The cat continued to smile and meowed.
"Err…." Nora was unnerved by The Serpent's smile generally. And the cat's smile seemed to be primarily directed at her. "Disregard his smile." Cassandra told her. "He's a Cheshire Cat so that grin can't come off his face."
"Oh." Nora said. Kimmie sneezed three times. Cassandra only patted her back and walked over to the pot of soup.
"Are you alright? Achoo!" Walking into the room Nora could smell pepper in the air. Kimmie sneezed after her and so did Brandy. The only ones unaffected by the spice were the Duchess and the Cheshire Cat. "There is pepper everywhere." Nora said, holding her nose to keep from sneezing. "That's what's making you not feel well. Why don't you go outside and get some fresh air?"
"My mom has everything I need in here. Achoo!" Kimmie said. "I can get anything I want while I'm in this house. Achoo! Achoo! Achoo! There's nothing I need that's outside!"
"Accept the party that we must attend." Cassandra clarified from the stove. "The Queen of Hearts demands that we all attend and bring our invitations." Cassandra tasted the soup that Brandy was making and spat it out onto the floor. "You call this soup? It's too cold and not nearly enough pepper to fix Kimberly's cold!"
"It'll just take a few more minutes." Brandy replied shrinking back from Cassandra. "I'll fix the soup. See?" Brandy started throwing large amounts of ground pepper. The grey cloud was forcing her to breathe through her own sleeve.
Cassandra rolled her eyes and Brandy's expense. "This is taking too long. I'm going on ahead so the Queen actually knows we're going to attend. Silver, you stay at the soup and make sure that it makes my daughter better! You!" She pointed at Nora. "Make sure Kimberly eats at least three bowls of soup or until she stops sneezing! I will not have a daughter who only sneezes when she comes to the most important party in the Kingdom!" And with that Cassandra strode out of the house, slamming the front door behind her.
"What a grouch. Achoo!" Nora sneezed.
"Tell me about it. Achoo!" Brandy replied.
Kimmie sneezed twice without saying anything. Nora felt sorry for Kimmie and Brandy, neither Cassandra nor the pepper seemed to be doing them any favors. Patting Kimmie on the back, Nora noticed that even her eyes were starting to water from all the spice. "Hey Brandy?" Nora said over to the struggling cook. "Why don't you put a lid on that pot, and come with me and Kimmie outside? The soup can get warmer that way and- Achoo! And we can all get a break from this pepper."
"But what about-?" Brandy looked over at the shelf where the Cheshire cat had been sitting only to see now that the strange creature was gone.
"Well?" Nora asked smiling.
Brandy put a lid on top of the pot and declared. "Let's go!"
Nora led a sneezing Kimmie while Brandy ran out the side door of the kitchen. "Shouldn't you have knocked?" Kimmie asked once they were out the door.
"We're going out now. Not coming in." Nora tried explaining.
Kimmie sneezed again. "Life is so complicated."
Nora led Kimmie after Brandy down the road away from the house. Looking back at the house Nora still saw the cloud of smoke coming out from the chimney. "Is that smoke… pepper?" she asked Brandy.
"Yeah, it is." Brandy answered her snidely. "The Duchess hates her house to be so hot so there isn't any other fire other than in the kitchen. Pepper is the only gray thing that could be coming out! And I hate pepper!"
The three girls had walked a short ways with Kimmie bringing up the rear. Brandy did most of the talking, enjoying the fresh air that she could breathe more easily in. Behind them, Kimmie had stopped sneezing, but she was coughing so much Nora began to wonder if she really did have a cold. "Kimmie?" Nora said. "Do you want to head back now?" She grabbed Brandy's shoulder to get her stop. But when the two of them looked back, all they saw was Kimmie's pink dress lying in the road behind them.
"Huh?" Nora looked at Brandy who was equally confused. They walked over to the dress and Brandy began searching through it, while Nora looked around the road for Kimmie. "Why would she just…?"
Before Nora could complete her thought, a small noise came from the dress. "Aarf-aarf! Aarf-aarf!" Nora lifted up the collar and out came a little brown chihuahua!
"Kimmie?!" Nora eyes went wide in shock. The little dog barked twice, happy in response. Brandy too gasped happily and dug through the pink dress with fervor. "Brandy, did you know this would happen?"
"No!" Brandy said, delightfully finding what she was searching for. "But look! The invitation to the Enigmaland Tea Party!" Brandy held up a white card with red heart-shaped embroidery. Clenching it to her chest she squealed, "I can go, see my boyfriend, and turn everyone against the Duchess! Woo-ho!" Brandy quickly scooped up the dress and shoes and took off from the path.
"Brandy, wait a second! What about her?" Brandy was already well beyond the trees. Disappointed and a little disheartened, Nora kneeled down by the chihuahua. "I'm so sorry, Kimmie. It looks like neither of us are going to the party." The dog whimpered. "Yeah, I know. I need to go there to find my way back home. Your mom is going to be expecting you there, isn't she?" The dog said nothing. "I don't know how to change you back into a human, but you do make a very cute little doggy." Nora scratched her under the chin. The chihuahua happily accepted, barking happily.
"If you want you can stick with me. We'll at least find out where the party is and maybe we can find a way to get in together." To that the Kimmie-turned-dog stuck her nose and tail up in the air, and snobbishly took the opposite direction of Brandy leaving Nora the only one on the path. "How could I forget? Dog or not, Kimmie is still Kimmie."
An accented voice came from the tree branches. "So she turned into a dog, huh?" Looking up, Nora spotted the cat- man from before laying casually on one of the nearby branches. "How fitting for one such as the Duchess' child." He mused.
"Did you know that would happen to her?" Nora asked, her hands on her hips.
"I did." He yawned and stretched. "But you were the one who took her out of the house, so it's not my fault."
"But you knew it would happen. Why didn't you say anything? The Duchess is going to get really upset when she doesn't see her daughter at the party, and comes home to find she's become a small dog."
"Not if her house is burned down~." The Cheshire Cat sung leaning in from his place in the tree. "That pot which was left boiling? Now the whole house is over-cooked."
Nora's hands flew to her head. "Oh my gosh! Aw man, I am so going to get in trouble!"
"Meh," the Cat rolled off the branch, land on his feet and leaned on the trunk of the tree. "The Duchess won't even remember your name. And the cook will get in trouble when she shows up in her daughter's clothes. But you and me?" he took a few easy strides up to her. "We're free to go anywhere we want."
Nora felt a blush burning on her face. She tried backing away from the Cheshire Cat, but he followed her until he had her trapped with her back up against a tree. "Y-You need to go back." Nora managed to get out. This guy looked like another smooth operator with other intentions that she knew. "The Duchess knows you were in the house too. She'll come looking for you if she can't find Kimmie."
"All the more reason for me to stay and play with you." He purred, using one hand to lean up against the tree. "I don't need to go back at all any more. I was more of her rat-catcher anyway. No more house, no more rats to worry about now. I could survive on my own. But… I would love to have some company."
Nora's senses were screaming 'danger!' as the Cat's face came closer to hers. She had gotten this close to a similar certain person like this before, she knew how to avoid his advances. Ducking out from under his arm, he was left to fall face-forward into the grass. "N-no thanks!" Nora said, running down the path. "I've got places to go and people see!"
Left lying in the dirt, the Cheshire Cat propped up his head with one hand grinning in the direction Nora had gone. His tail swayed and then started to fade away with the rest of him. "Hmm." He purred. "What a poor, lonely Miss. How could she stand to turn away one such as… this?" His face faded away until all was left was his laughing grin.
