Chapter 4

His ears stood at attention and he widened his stance, no longer facing what was in front of him he turned to face Dean and Janie. He growled giving them the impression that he might attack anything that moved. Janie worried by his sudden change in behavior looked around. "Gus, easy boy we're okay." The dog didn't waver. If anything he turned so that he was now facing Dean, only Dean successfully putting Janie behind him in a protective manner. "Gus! Down boy! He's not going to hurt me." She turned to Dean "I'm sorry he's not usually like this."

The dog lunged forwards, knocking Dean over and successfully releasing Janie's grip on his leash. He walked right back up to Dean's face, teeth showing fully intending to kill if need be. With the dog so close it was then that he noticed where he was looking and it wasn't at him.

Gus was looking into the bushes that they had been walking mindlessly past for about 10 or so minutes. Slowly the dog moved towards the bush, Dean just as slowly moved from his back to being on his stomach. Looking into the bush Dean saw nothing at first. He stared longer while Janie stood behind them both terrified and confused. Gus pushed forward and that was when Dean saw it. The eyes. They glowed the most sickening shade of green that seemed to change the longer that you looked at them. Gus let out his first bark at whatever the hell that was, but apparently that was all it needed to anger the thing. It started coming out of the bush, Dean thinking quickly pulled his gun. By the time that he had the chance to aim he heard a shot fire and saw a bullet go right between its eyes. At first it didn't move so he for good measure shot at it himself. At this point he was already standing when he looked back at Janie who still had a gun in her hand. He was slightly surprised and yet proud of her for having brought it with her, she didn't even look at him but he could see it in her face. It wasn't dead. 'Why can't things just die when you shoot them?' He looked back quietly he uttered "Son of a bitch."

Looking to Janie he shouted at her; "RUN!" she didn't even bother to grab Gus' leash seeing as the dog must have understood and was already a good distance away from them running in the direction of home. Dean was right behind them running. They kept going without looking back once to know if it was following them or not.

They were still running at full speed when they reached the intersection. They weren't looking where they were going anymore but more like envisioning their final destination, it was like tunnel vision. All they were thinking about was Janie's house. All this meant that they hadn't seen the lights in front of them and Janie being in front and Gus long gone meant she was the first to get there. She turned back for the first time locking eyes with Dean, she looked so scared and that was the moment he saw it.

The light. It wasn't green. It was yellow and cars had started moving to get out faster, one in particular was moving fast and right towards her.

"JANIE!"

As soon as the words came out of his mouth he knew he had to do something. He had to try and stop her from getting hit. He made a move to grab her, an attempt to save her. He could feel one of his hands reach her arm and grab hold of it, he made a move with the other one to get a hold of the rest of her before it was too late. But as soon as he got a hold of her he could feel it, it was too late. The headlights were coming closer, by the time that the driver saw her she looked a lot like a deer frightened and wide eyed. There was a screeching sound coming from the tires on the car. It was the last thing that Dean had heard.
