CATO POV
We decided to let Gleam live. He didn't deserve an easy way out. Death was a shortcut and he wouldn't be getting that. We were going to let him rot in a prison cell for the rest of his life. There, he'd suffer. Maybe he'd starve. I didn't care but I wanted him to suffer for as long as possible. He set us up. He wasn't only a traitor to me, but a traitor to all of Panem. And he wouldn't be getting away so easily.
We were back in District Thirteen. Yesterday, everyone agreed to keep Snow locked up in a cell here. If we killed him now, he'd get an easy way out, too. And none of us wanted that. We'd let him live. As he was tortured and slowly driven insane, he'd pay for his all of his mistakes.
But now that Snow was out of the picture and no longer president of Panem, we needed a good and trustworthy leader.
Miles rose from his seat. "If we don't want Panem to fall apart, we need someone to lead this what's left of this country. It needs to be rebuilt. We need to give back to the people what they have lost." He smiled. "Since Alma has worked with us to fight back against Snow and start the rebellion, I think that she deserves this title . . . to rule all of Panem."
Miles sat down and Coin rose in his place. "Thank you. I am flattered. Before the rebellion, no one knew who I was. Since Snow's capture, as well as Gleam's, everyone knows who I am and what I have done over the past several weeks. I couldn't have done any of it without all of you. I think that I will do a televised announcement and have people vote . . . although there probably aren't many people who would like this position."
Everyone clapped, including me. Without Coin's plans and phases, we couldn't have done it on our own. I was just happy to be back here, safe and sound with my beautiful Glimmer.
I placed a hand on her stomach, making my Glimmer smile. Just a few more months and I'd be a father. Our creation, our baby was just a few months away. I was a little nervous, though. I had to admit. Would I make a decent father? I didn't know how to be a father. I hardly knew how to be a husband. I just knew that I loved Glimmer so much and I would do anything to keep her happy. I loved our baby already and he wasn't here yet. We still didn't know the sex, but I was hoping for a boy. I wanted to teach him how to play sports. If we ended up having a girl though, I'd let Finnick teach her how to swim. Maybe she'd like that.
I just wanted to be a good father. I just wanted to love our baby and for our baby to love me back. I would be a better father than mine was. Without the Games existing, there was a better future for this baby—for all of Panem.
For a moment, I thought about my parents. I knew that they'd be proud of me and what I'd done. It made me sad that they won't know their grandchild. I'd make sure that Snow paid for that, one way or another. He'd pay for every single death that he was responsible for. I'd make him wish he were dead. There wouldn't be an easy way out for him. Not this time.
I glanced over at Peeta and Katniss. Katniss seemed to be listening, but she had a doubtful look on her face, as if she didn't believe anything Coin was saying. She whispered something to Peeta and Peeta whispered something back. But obviously I wasn't able to hear what they were talking about. Katniss was probably suspicious, but that was nothing new. She questioned everything and everyone. But I didn't blame her. Trust was something difficult to come by. You couldn't find it everywhere. And you couldn't put it in everybody.
KATNISS POV
As I walked to dinner with Peeta, I heard voices coming from one of the meeting rooms. Everyone had left hours ago, but someone was still inside. As we got closer, I could make out Coin's voice.
"Of course the people will vote for me," she was saying. "Who else is there to vote for? I've gained everyone's trust. They've all put their faith in me. Me, of all others. I can't believe that they've all fallen for it." I glanced at Peeta, who was concentrating hard on listening to the conversation. "They're all foolish. Of course, I wanted Snow out of the picture. These plans weren't made in vain. Snow was no good for this country. He was blinded by greed and could not use his power effectively. But I will use my power to its greatest extent! I know that I will become president. There is no doubt in my mind. And these fools will submit to an all powerful ruler. I'll rule this country! I'll execute the punishments! And I will make them bow before me!"
I shot Peeta a grave look before I whispered, "Coin can't be trusted."
Peeta nodded and took my hand in his. We walked downstairs to the dormitories. We had to warn the others before it was too late. We had to tell our friends of Coin's crooked plans. She didn't want to make this country a better place. If anything, she sought out to destroy it. Panem would be the same if she was voted to take Snow's position as president. I couldn't let that happen. If she became president, everything we'd worked for would be for nothing.
I banged on Miles' door. Johanna answered with a yawn. "What's all the banging for?"
I said, "Coin isn't who she says she is."
Johanna furrowed her eyebrows. "What? What are you talking about?"
"Where's Miles? Both of you need to come with me," I said, ignoring her other questions.
Miles came to the door as he pulled a T-shirt over his naked torso. "I'm here. What's up?"
I ignored him, too. "Just come with me. I need to find Cato and Glimmer, too. And where the hell is Finnick?"
Without any questions, everyone followed closely behind me. As we rounded the corner, I spotted Haymitch walking with Finnick. They seemed to be talking about something important, but this was way more important than whatever they were talking about.
"Hey," called Finnick.
"Come with us," I said, grabbing him by the bottom of his shirt.
"Easy," he said. "This is my favorite button down."
"What's going on?" asked Haymitch.
"I need to tell everyone something," I explained. "It's important and right now I need to find Cato and Glimmer. A few seconds later, I knocked on Cato's door and they both came to the door. "Can we come in? I have something to tell you?" Cato and Glimmer both nodded slowly before the six of us entered the room.
"So I'm pretty sure that this violates the fire code," says Miles, taking a seat on the bed next to Cato.
"So what was so important that you dragged us all into this tiny little room, sweetheart?" asks Haymitch, taking a swig from his flask.
"Alma Coin isn't who she says she is," I started. "She doesn't want to make Panem better. She wants to destroy it. She's going to be just like Snow."
"And how do you know all this?" asked Finnick.
"We overheard her," said Peeta for me.
An idea came to me. "Actually, if we could get to the control room, maybe we could pull up the room they were in and listen in on the whole conversation."
"We don't have access to the control room," Glimmer reminded us.
"We're the four victors," joked Cato. "We can do anything."
"You guys might not have access to the control room," said Miles, "but I do."
