Hey, I'm back. Sorry this chapter has taken so long to post but I've been working on other chapters and other stories.

Hope you like it and please remember to review - criticism is welcome as long as it's constructive!

Small Worlds

It was a few weeks since Megan had first come to the hub and she was fitting in well with the team, especially Tosh as in the short time the two had become firm friends and could often be found working together in the hub and making plans to go out in the evenings. Even Owen and Gwen were starting to accept her, and Ianto well he was still quiet and reserved but now he always ate with the team his dry sense of humour was coming to the surface and he started answering back to Owen – some of which Jack found highly amusing. But the best thing for Jack was that they had started flirting again, it was just light banter as Ianto was still a little unsure and nervous when they were on their own but it made Jack think maybe there was the chance for more.

Megan came to the hub every day, not always for the whole day but at least until after lunch; she was even doing some hours in the tourist office so Ianto had more time to sort out the mess of uncatalogued, miss catalogued and missing items – also known as the archives.

So it was a great surprise when Tosh walked into the hub to find that Megan was nowhere to be seen, but Ianto as always was making coffee. Tosh found herself wondering how many times he actually made coffee because it always seemed to just turn up and how many times had she actually thanked him for it?

"Morning Ianto." Tosh called removing her jacket and starting up her computers.

"Morning Tosh, coffee will be ready soon."

"Ok, no Megan today?"

"Huh, oh no," he handed her her coffee. Mmmm perfect as always. "She realised that spending so long at the hub has meant that she hasn't really unpacked properly yet all her things are just in piles around her room and she's got posters and pictures and stuff to put up so she decided to take a day to get it all done. She'll probably be back tomorrow, so don't worry."

Gwen and Owen eventually wondered in and were happy drinking their coffee when a call came in about a suspicious death in custody.

Megan put her elbows on the counter and rested her head in her hands, watching Ianto move around the kitchen making coffee, he'd been home about ten minutes and in that time he had lost his suit jacket, tie and rolled up his sleeves. He had also hardly said a word to her, which only ever meant one thing.

"So what happened?"

"What makes you think anything happened?"

"You came home early." She said raising her eyebrows, it was nowhere near as affective as Ianto's but it got the message across.

Ianto brought their coffees over to the counter and set them down. He put his elbows on the counter and rubbed his hands over his face. "Urgh!"

"Come on spill."

Ianto looked at her and had a drink of his coffee.

"You know you used to read books about fairies and they were always happy, magical, beautiful little creatures." Megan nodded, she'd loved those books, and they'd made everything around her seem magical. "Well they were wrong and I'm sorry to ruin your childhood but they are the opposite… the complete opposite. They're dangerous and frankly bloody ugly." He said trying to lighten the mood a little. "They were protecting this girl, only young, just a child; they were controlling the weather to keep her safe. They killed three people, one of them died in a police cell after he admitted to following her and trying to take her away. He kept saying that he needed to be kept safe. The second was a friend of Jacks… well he said she knew his father. But she loved them, defended them and they just killed her, for no apparent reason. Then they killed the boyfriend of the young girls mam because he hurt her." Ianto shook his head and composed himself a little before continuing. "They said she was the Chosen One; they wanted her to go with them, give up her life, her family, her humanity. Everything."

Megan raised her head and looked seriously at him. "What did you do?"

"Nothing." He replied bitterly, standing up straight he began to pace. "We did nothing. Well unless you count Jack just letting them take her. We did nothing."

"Jack just let them take her?" she repeated slowly so as to not make a mistake. "You think it would have been that easy for him to just give away a child like that? The hard decisions have to be made by someone." She walked over to Ianto and hesitantly laid a hand on his arm "You of all people know that."

Ianto just pushed passed her and went to sit in the living room; Megan followed and sat on the coffee table in front of him. She was not going to let this go!

"You can't blame Jack for this."

"Why not?"

"Jack has to make the hard decisions because… well no one else can, and I mean as we've seen not all aliens will wait while you negotiate with them. But to do this Jack has to look passed the sentiment factor and see what is for the best." She broke eye contact with Ianto and sipped her now cold coffee, placing it down next to her.

"Oh."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. That's… well it… kind of makes you see it in a different light. Did you learn to do that in uni?" she nodded. "Well glad to see they taught you something." He said with a smile, Megan pushed him, trying to pretend to be insulted and failing miserably.

Megan took the coffee cups back into the kitchen before going back and asking Ianto "How is Jack taking it?"

"I don't know." He admitted, Megan frowned, slightly confused. "He sent us all home. I tried to go up and see him but he'd locked his door. I mean I didn't even realise it could lock!"

"We should check he's ok."

"Yeah we should." Ianto stood up, grabbed his keys and began to pull on his jacket.

"What… oh now?" Megan quickly pulled on her own shoes and coat.

"No time like the present." Ianto said as he opened the door and let her out, grabbing her hand as they quickly went down the stairs.

The alarms went off in the hub as they walked into the hub Megan looked around. "Really they go off at night as well."

"Don't look at me; I didn't set them to do it." Ianto walked into the main area of the hub and looked around, all was quiet. Too quiet.

Movement in Jacks office caught his eye so he ran up the stairs, Megan on his heels, when he got to the door he knocked loudly, there was no reply so Ianto tried the handle, it was still locked so Ianto peered through the glass on either side of the door. What he saw froze his heart.

Ianto banged on the door and shouted for Jack to let him in but there was no reply. Nothing. He looked through the glass once more and made a decision. He brought up his foot and with as much force as he could he kicked the door just under the lock, there was a large crack as the door opened and Ianto ran into the room. But he was too late. BANG! Jack slumped back in his seat the gun falling to the floor. Blood was spattered on the wall behind Jacks head. Ianto froze in the doorway not even noticing Megan behind him.

Ianto mentally shook himself, then ran over to Jack and laid him on the floor, he wrapped his arms round Jack and waited.

Jack gasped back to life and grabbed at whatever he could to hold onto. But instead of grasping air like he had been expecting he caught someone's hand which wasn't right, he was sure he'd been alone. He opened his eyes and looked and found himself looking into Ianto's worried face.

"Hey sir, afraid your back with the living."

"So it would seem." Strangely he actually appreciated the little joke.

With Ianto's help he stood, he felt dizzy from loss of blood but he managed to sit back in his chair. He looked around, he saw the blood, saw the broken door and saw the young girl frozen in shock in the doorway. Ianto saw her too; he walked over to her, gently putting his hands on her shoulders, turning her round, away from the blood.

"Megs?" he said putting a hand on her cheek, "Megan look at me, chwaer fach" Megan looked up at him, "Hey, you ok?"

"Yeh." She said but her voice shook a little as she spoke. Ianto pulled her into a hug and kissed her forehead.

"Why don't you go and make some tea, yeh while Jack gets cleaned up." The young girl nodded and left the office.

Jack watched the exchange feeling slightly envious at their closeness, their easy relationship, at the fear on her face. "Will she be ok?"

"Yeh, don't worry she's stronger than she looks."

"I know but it's a shock to see someone die and then come back..." Then he thought of something "How come you're so cool about it?"

Ianto looked at the floor, "I've seen it before."

Jack leaned forward, frowning he was sure he'd never died in front of Ianto. "When?"

"Out on the plas, when Suzie shot you."

"Oh." Jack frowned, remembering something about that footage, "Was it you who deleted it then?" Ianto nodded "Good… cos you know… I thought I'd done it and just forgotten. Thanks. Why did you?"

"I knew would have a reason not to tell us, I had no right to go against that sir. And you know I had my own secrets at the time sir."

"Ianto it's after hours, you can call me Jack."

"Ok… Jack." He looked out of the window and saw Megan moving around the kitchen then looked back to Jack. "Sir… um… Jack you really should go and get changed before Meg comes back."

"Right, ok yeh that would be a good idea. Um you should probably do something about yourself as well if you want you can borrow a shirt." Ianto looked down at himself and realised the front of his suit and hands were also covered in blood "Ok back in a minute."

About ten minutes later Jack and Ianto were sat in comfortable silence waiting for Megan. When she arrived Jack noticed that her eyes were a little red but other than that she seemed fine, she handed Jack his cup then sat next to Ianto on the sofa, leaning her head on his shoulder drinking her tea.

"So, how come you're allowed in the kitchen? I mean it's my hub and I'm not allowed anywhere near it."

"It's simple really; I know Megan won't make a mess or break the coffee machine."

"Wait you're allowed to use the coffee machine too he feigned being hurt "… but its alien, nothing else like it. Anywhere."

"I've seen Ianto using it and I have a good memory so I remember."

Jack took a sip and paused, it was fantastic, one of the best cups of tea he'd had "Mmmm, that's brilliant, it's as good as Ianto's coffee." The young girl blushed from the praise.

"It's not but thanks anyway."

Jack frowned, why didn't she believe him.

They sat in silence for a few minutes before Ianto couldn't take it anymore. "Megs did I tell you that I got a letter from the Doc?"

Megan sat up and looked at him "No, you missed off that piece of information."

"Do you want to know what he said or not?" she nodded; Ianto looked at Jacks confused face and decided to explain. "I should say that I'm talking about Dr Steinberg."

"Oh." Said Jack understanding, he'd forgotten about him. "The guy who worked for Torchwood and now for UNIT." He clarified, they both nodded.

Megan impatiently shook Ianto's arm "What did he say?"

Ianto laughed and looked back to Megan's excited face, "I emailed him the other day to tell him you were back in Cardiff for a bit and he said that it was unfortunate because that's when he's going to Belgium."

"Liar!" she said hitting him in the stomach almost making him spill his tea.

"Oi, Megan be careful."

"Sorry, but just tell me what he said!" the girl was practically jumping up and down on the sofa.

Ianto was grinning at the excited girl, "He said that he is going to come down to Cardiff in…" but he never got to finish because as soon as he'd said Cardiff Megan had jumped up from the sofa and started dancing and jumping round the room chanting 'the Doc's, coming the Doc's coming.'

Jack raised his eyebrows because although he knew Megan wasn't particularly quiet the fact she was Ianto's sister meant he hadn't seen her as the kind to do that, also he didn't think he had EVER seen a 19 year old act like that. But maybe he should give her a break, this Dr Steinberg was clearly important to them both. But he couldn't help laughing as he watched the jumping girl, her hair going everywhere as she danced around the room. Out the corner of his eye he could see Ianto grinning, it was a nice sight; it made him look his age. Jack realised that he didn't see Ianto smile very often or at all, not a real smile.

Megan got tired very quickly from her dancing so she flopped onto the sofa, lying on her back with her head on Ianto's knee, grinning up at him. She turned her head to look at Jack only to see him staring at Ianto, she wondered what he was thinking.

"You should meet Dr Steinberg, you'd like him and Tosh would love him."

Jack nodded "It sounds like a good idea."

The tea had long been drunk but it wasn't too late so Jack brought out a bottle of whiskey and some glasses, the three of them discussed everything from films to books to the news the only thing they didn't even go near was Torchwood and aliens. Jack enjoyed this, he didn't think he'd had such a normal conversation with people he worked with and he was pleasantly surprised at Megan and Ianto's knowledge in all things old and 'vintage' although maybe he shouldn't be so surprised given their occupations. It didn't take much longer for Megan to fall asleep, her head once again resting on Ianto's lap.

Ianto knew that they should talk about what happened with the fairies but he wasn't sure how it would be received, after they found out about Lisa him and Jack hadn't really talked. At all. Anyway hadn't he just a few short hours before blamed Jack despite not having been there, he had seen the others come in, heard what they had said and made a snap decision. And that had been wrong.

"They don't hate you you know."
"They told you what happened?"

"Yeh."

"They told you about Jasmine, that I let them take her?" Ianto nodded. "Then why are you here? Why aren't you both angry at me?"

Ianto sighed and looked down at Megan "I was. I was angry at what you did; I didn't understand why, how you could do that. But someone has to make the hard decisions and the others will see that."

"Will they?"

"If Megan convinced me to see senses then so will the others." But looking at him it was obvious for Ianto to see that this went beyond what happened to the girl. Maybe to something more.

"Tell me about Estelle."

The two talked about Estelle, and Ianto could see Jack relax the more he talked. He knew he didn't need to say anything, that wasn't what Jack needed; he just needed someone who would listen without judging him. Taking into account what he had done for love Ianto thought he was probably the best person for that.

They talked until Ianto could hardly keep his eyes open; Jack picked up the cups off the table, took them down to the kitchen and rinsed them.

When he got back to his office Ianto had fallen asleep, his chin resting on his chest and his hand on Megan's head the other she was using as a pillow. Jack grinned to himself, it was adorable and he'd have taken a picture if he was sure that Ianto wouldn't punch him again. He didn't want to wake them up so he took his great coat from the stand and draped it over Megan, then he turned to Ianto, brushing his hair out of his eyes he pressed a soft kiss to his forehead. Then he went down to his bunker to sleep.
