Foaly hugged his knees, sitting in the corner of the metal room. He'd looked over every inch of the place for the last few hours and found no way out. The room was sealed up tight. He'd gotten used to walking on his human legs, but was still a little unbalanced. After concluding that he'd be stuck here until somebody opened the door he'd sat down in the far corner of the room and leaned against the wall.
A pair of familiar brown eyes stared back at him in the reflection of the metal, but they were surrounded by a face he didn't recognize. This was all extremely unsettling for him, not to mention confusing. He was beginning to wrap his mind around the 'how', but the 'why' still eluded him.
The former centaur's scattered thoughts were interrupted by exactly what he'd been hoping for. The door swished open.
To say that Grub was nervous would have been a major understatement. To say that he was terrified was closer, but still didn't quite cut it. Either way, his earlier determination was now completely gone, but he pressed on.
The security room was in the basement and was the farthest room from the elevator. It would be impossible to get there without being noticed. If he was witnessed going directly to the security room then he'd end up being suspect when the bad stuff happened, so he had to think about how to make it seem like he was just stopping by.
Grub Kelp walked around the basement floor and stopped in several different rooms. He'd even stay in some of them for ten or fifteen minutes. Others he was quickly in and out of.
"What are you doing?" an angry voice asked him.
He turned to see his brother, Trouble, glaring at him. At the sight of his sibling his fear and nervousness fade and his determination returned.
He cleared his throat and replied, "Oh, I think I lost my badge down here at lunch break. Just looking for it, Trubs!"
"Don't call me that." Trouble quickly shot, then said, "Somebody would have taken it to the security room. Go check there."
"Will do!" Grub said and hurried off.
That went surprisingly smoothly. He thought as he made his way to the security room. Once there he knocked on the door. Receiving no answer he pushed the door open and walked in. The security officer was leaning back in his chair with his feet on the control panel, asleep.
Quietly, Grub pulled the jump drive out and inserted it into the computer that controlled the building's security. Once inserted it began to install something that was finished within a few moments. After that he took out the drive and placed it back in his pocket. He headed for the door but then remembered his excuse for being here. Grub turned around and shifted the lost and found box a little to make it look like somebody had been looking through it then left back to his office. The job had been done, so why did he have an awful feeling in the pit of his stomach?
Opal Koboi stepped through the metal door to the room Foaly was trapped in. Her long black hair was tied back in a ponytail to reveal her pointed ears. She wore a pleated black miniskirt and a sparkly sleeveless black top with a pink ribbon just below the bust that tied into a bow at the back. The heels of her black suede ankle boots clicked against the tiles as she entered. In all honesty, she looked absolutely stunning, not that anybody would ever tell her that.
Foaly glared at her, but the glare quickly turned into confusion as she kneeled down to set a tray on the floor in front of him.
"Here." She said, standing up straight again.
In response she got a look that said he didn't trust her at all and that he was questioning her motives. The young Opal rolled her eyes and huffed, "Its food. You don't want to starve, do you?"
He kept giving her a speculating look.
"It's not poisoned!" She shouted indignantly at his suspicious gaze before turning on her heel and stomping out, slamming the door.
Foaly watched her go, wondering why she'd bother bringing him food at all. Opal hated him so why wouldn't she let him starve? It was just another question to add to his growing list of 'why's.
N°1 now had a map of Haven City spread out on the table and was running about collecting various objects. Holly, Juliet, and Butler kept throwing him questioning glances as he mumbled to himself as he picked up a new object, but said nothing. Mulch was no longer in the room, having gone off to find the hospital's cafeteria.
Finally the little demon came back to the table and set the items down. He now had a stone bowl, a quartz crystal on a chain, and a variety of herbs, spices, and ingredients. The other three sitting around the table looked at him in confusion, but N°1 didn't notice as he mixed the ingredients in the stone bowl, all the while pouring little bits of magic into it. To everybody's surprise a strange red fog grew over the contents of the bowl, pouring over the edges and covering the map. The red fog bled into the paper and the lines that marked roads and streets started to glow with the demon's red magic. N°1 stood up and held the crystal's chain in his hand, the quartz itself dangling over the map and moving around in a circle. It glowed with power as he let the stone fall. It landed on a point of the map and all the magic glow that lit of the paper condensed and converged on the place where it had struck. The demon lifted the crystal and a small glowing dot remained on the map in the place they needed to go.
Holly took a good look at the location of the dot and glowered at it, seething.
N°1 looked at her, confused, "You know where that is?"
"Yes." She hissed, "It looks like we're going to Koboi Labs."
