Chapter 14 "The Aftermath (Part 2)"

Peeta's POV

It's Monday. Finnick and Annie haven't talked since Saturday morning. I should know because Finnick hasn't left me alone the entire weekend. When he came over Saturday he never left. I completely understand he needed a friend after the fight he had with Annie. I feel for Finnick, I really do but…let's just say I'm thankful I don't have first period with him.

"Good morning, Peeta," Glimmer says as she takes a seat next to me.

First period I have Mr. Abernathy and he really doesn't care what his classroom does as long as no one bothers him.

"You know you didn't call me." Glimmer moves closer to me. "Didn't you have a good time Friday?

"Of course I did," I nearly shout. "It was great up until Johanna, Marvel, Clove, Cashmere, Gloss and Finnick deciding to join us."

"Clove thought it was a good way to cheer Finnick up. He was laughing among other things."

"What other things?"

Glimmer laughs. "Oh Peeta, you didn't notice?"

Notice what? My friends suck for ruining my date?

"Finnick was flirting with Clove."

What?

"He was not."

"He so was."

Johanna is sitting in front of us. I could just call her name and have her settle this, but that isn't fun. Instead I rip a sheet of paper out of my notebook, ball it up, and throw at her head. Glimmer giggles as soon as the paper ball hits Johanna.

Johanna slow turns around and fakes a smile. "Yes, Peeta?"

"Quick question. Was—"

"Finnick hitting on Clove Friday night? As much as it kills me to agree with…" Johanna's eyes drift toward Glimmer. "He was."

How did I not notice?

"Did you tell Annie?" I ask Johanna.

She shakes her head. "It's not like Clove was flirting back."

"Be grateful Cato wasn't there because Cato is the jealous type." Glimmer leaves the table and goes to join Cato on the other side of the room.

"I don't know what you see in her," Johanna says. "She's so fake with her 'Good morning, Peeta.'"

"We are not going to discuss my relationship with Glimmer."

"Oh, there's a relationship now? A month ago she wouldn't look at you twice."

"Drop it, Johanna."

I refuse to discuss Glimmer with Johanna. Johanna hates Glimmer; she has made that perfectly clear. I don't need to explain my feelings to her. What I feel for Glimmer has nothing to do with Johanna nor should it bother her this much. There isn't a relationship at the moment, but if there was she'd be the last person I'd tell.

"So what did Finnick tell you about Annie?"

"Not much," I lie. "He feels like Annie would rather be with Gloss than him."

Which is crazy. Annie told me that she has had a crush on Finnick since she moved here back in the eighth grade. She has known Gloss for all of two months. There is no way Gloss even compares to Finnick.

"I guess we'll talk to Annie about this mess at lunch."

"Actually I'm going to the library during lunch. I've got to check out books for this research paper."

Johanna looks at me like she doesn't believe me.

"What research paper?"

"The one in history class. Unlike you Johanna I actually have a hard teacher."

Okay so I lied. There's no research paper. I don't need any books. My history teacher doesn't even like papers. I just needed an excuse not to go to lunch. Finnick made me promise not to tell Annie anything he said, but I know when Annie gives me her sad look I know I'm going to break and tell her everything.

I enter the library ready to study and get some homework done but of course Annie is also here. She is talking to the librarian at the front counter. Instead of leaving, which is probably what I should have done, I hide behind the small bookshelves near the door in the corner. I'll just leave as soon as Annie leaves the front counter—or not. Annie just so happens to sit at the table between the exit and me. Great.

What do I do now? The only thing I can do: watch people, hope no one notices me, and try not to feel like a stalker.

In the far corner I see Delly and Madge quickly flipping through a book together. Despite what happened between Johanna and Madge I actually like Madge. Most days Madge comes over the bakery to hang out with Delly and I join them from time to time. Madge is sweet, fun, and so very humble. I would have never guessed the mayor's daughter to be so down to earth, especially since she's pretty. It's nice to know Delly has a good friend like Madge. Del is so sweet and innocent; I would hate for her to change. I'm grateful she came to live with my parents and me, beyond grateful. Ever since she moved in Mother has been calmer then usual. She hasn't bruised me in two months. I thank Delly for that.

Clove enters the library and no one really seems to notice. The library is pretty big, so not everyone is going to notice if someone walks in, but literally no one glances in Clove's direction. It's odd since she's a Career. Whenever Cato, Marvel, or Glimmer enters a room people take notice, maybe not as much as they would if Cash, Gloss or another victor walked in, but they still notice. The only attention Clove seemed to get was the guys' attention, but that stopped as soon as her and Cato became a couple.

Clove goes to the counter and it looks like she is returning a book. She turns towards the exit and suddenly freezes. She sees me. Fucking shit. Clove comes over to the bookshelf I'm hiding behind and moves some books around so she can see my face clearly.

"Is there a reason you're over here looking like a creeper?" Clove whispers.

I shrug as if it's completely normal for be to be hiding here. Clove looks over her shoulder then looks back at me with a smirk.

"Is someone avoiding Annie? What, her and Finnick are still fighting?"

"What do you care?" I whisper back.

"I do care, for your information. Finnick and I are a lot closer than you and your little victors think."

"Then why wasn't Finnick with you this entire weekend?"

Not that I care, I'm just trying to prove a point.

"Don't flatter yourself, Mellark. He called me as soon as the fight happened but unlike you my boyfriend is the jealous type. Judging by the way you're avoiding Annie I can assume you were no help to Finnick. What a surprise."

"Like you can do better," I mutter.

She smiles, "In case you haven't noticed, manipulation is my specialty. Watch and learn."

Clove shoves a book in my face before joining Annie at her empty table.

"Hi, Cresta," Clove says.

The table is close enough for me to hear Clove and for her to be able to look right at me.

Annie turns slightly towards Clove. She says nothing.

Clove frowns, "What's wrong? Finnick dumped you already? It's about time."

"He didn't dump me," Annie snaps. "We're just fighting."

"Oh," Clove says as if she's disappointed about it. "Well, when you do break-up let me know. I'd love to know if he's lips are as soft as they look."

Clove jumps out of her seat before Annie can even process what she just said. Clove leaves the library but not before she looks at me and winks.

Annie sits there for a minute before she starts packing up her stuff. She leaves the library in a rush.

Finally, she left. Now I can actually do some homework or I can go look at some art books located in the back of the library.

I end up in the back of the library looking at art books. This has to be my favorite section of the library, not only because of the art books but because no one is ever back here. I've spent an entire period back here before, sitting on the floor flipping through the books.

I'm right in the middle of looking through one of my favorite books when I hear Gloss' voice. It's from a distance so I don't pay too much attention to it. When I hear Annie's voice I start moving closer to the voices.

"Why?" Gloss asks.

"What do you mean why, because I said so," Annie replies.

"I told you the truth, Annie. I don't know what Finnick saw but I wasn't taking advantage of you, I was protecting you—"

"Protecting me? Getting me drunk isn't protecting me."

"I didn't get you drunk, you did that on your own."

"Who took me to the party?"

"Who invited themselves?"

"Whatever," Annie snaps. "That doesn't change anything."

"This is because of him, isn't?" Gloss sounds angry. "How about you tell Odair to shut the fuck up? He can't tell you what to do."

"He's not. I don't want anything to do with you anymore, Gloss. You're a horrible influence."

"I'm a horrible influence? Yeah, okay. Tell me, Annie, who did you thank for getting Finnick to finally grow a pair and ask you out? Who told you to forget about what your sister said about Finnick? She wanted you to break up with him and I convinced you not to. Most importantly, when was the last time you stood up for yourself like you did with Cashmere at Homecoming?"

Annie doesn't respond.

"I guess none of that matters," Gloss continues. "If Finnick is telling you I'm trying to steal you away from him well…I wouldn't want your boyfriend to be a liar."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"You'll see. By the way you can keep my jacket. It looked better on you than it did on me anyways. See you around, Annie."

I hear Gloss leave and then a moment later I hear Annie leave.

I never believed Gloss was after Annie. I tried telling Finnick that this weekend, but he wouldn't listen to me. Gloss didn't really like or dislike Finnick, but now he probably hates Finnick. If Finnick took Annie anyway from me, I'd probably hate him too. Now Gloss knows how to really bother Finnick. Just to spend way too much time with Annie.

I leave the library as the bell for next period rings. Clove is by her locker at the end of the hall with Glimmer. I rush over there.

Clove is friends with Finnick and Gloss. I'm thinking maybe she can fix this before anything happens.

"Peeta," Glimmer says with a smile. "Where are you running off to?"

"Hmm," I look at Clove who raises an eyebrow at me. "I was just going to—"

"You know you never told me if you enjoyed yourself Friday."

"I did." I take a deep breathe. "Actually…I was wondering if you'd like to go out again. Maybe sometime this weekend?"

"No."

No? What?

"I—I thought you had a nice time with me?" Ugh, I sound so desperate.

"I did. I'll see you later, Peeta."

Glimmer kisses me on the check before walking away with Clove.

What the hell just happened?

How Gloss ended up crashing Peeta's Date with the others will be explained next chapter. Sorry this chapter is kinda blah but it is important.

Gloss and Cash are joining the victors soon.
