Chapter 24 " Juliet "
Gloss' POV
Coming back to school after winter break is fucking hell. My brain was just shut off for two weeks and now I don't remember shit. Finals are soon so I'm so screwed. The only thing getting me through the day is the fact that it's Friday. Fucking finally.
The week has been nothing but boring. What's a guy have to do to get some entertainment around here? I mean, it's kind of funny watching Johanna's reaction to Peeta and Glimmer's new relationship, but still.
Peeta is smitten with Glimmer. Since she came back from vacation Peeta hasn't left her side, and vice versa. He walks her home, she stays and watches him during wrestling practice, she sits with him in all the classes they share, and he sits at lunch with her and Clove. Those two can't get enough of each other and it makes Johanna sick.
Annie, Johanna, and I are on our way to lunch when we catch a sight of Glimmer and Peeta making out by her locker.
Johanna makes a gagging noise. "Disgusting."
"Johanna," Annie says with a frown. "Be nice. They're just expressing their love for one another."
"They should get a room then," Johanna says. "And what do you mean love? They don't love each other."
"And how would you know?"
"Because I know Peeta."
"Guys," I say trying to break some tension that's growing between the two. "Who the hell cares? The guy is happy so let him be, Johanna. Annie, stop defending a relationship that isn't even yours."
"Shut up, Gloss!"
"No one asked you, Gloss!"
Well at least they're upset with me together.
"May I remind you, Johanna, that you don't hear me making gagging noises when you're with Gale no matter how sickening your relationship is," Annie mutters and damn, that was cold.
Johanna's jaw drops. "Since when do you have a problem with Gale?"
"Since you two started fighting and haven't stopped. You're back with him again and I've kept my mouth shut. Johanna, you deserve better than him. Someone more deserving of your love."
I really don't like the smile Annie is giving me right now. What is she smiling about? What did I do?
"Fine," Johanna snaps. "When you're around I'll shut up about Peeta and the tramp."
"Okay, time for a group hug, guys," I say spreading my arms around the two. "Come on, let's keep the peace."
They give in and wrap their arms around each other. The sound of heels clicking against the floor causes them to separate. I know the sound of those shoes anywhere.
"Isn't that adorable, but sorry, I need my brother for a moment," Cash says before dragging me across the hall. She digs her nails into my skin and it fucking hurts.
"Damn, Cash. You need to trim them nails of yours."
"Don't come home today."
"Well hello to you too, sis," I say sarcastically. "And how's your day going?"
"I'm serious, Gloss," Cash says. "I have a project due soon and I don't want my friend drooling all over you instead of working on the assignment."
"Is she cute?"
"Yes, he is cute. I can set that up if you'd like." Cashmere smirks and I roll my eyes.
"Okay, okay. I won't come home. I can find something to do but—"
"Great! I'll see you in Cinna's class." Cash gives me a kiss on the check and runs off.
I get to the lunchroom and Annie and Johanna are nowhere to be seen. They must have gone to the library or something. Damn them for ditching me. Whatever, I wasn't hungry anyways.
I spot Clove sitting by herself reading a book. I forgot that Cato doesn't have this lunch period. I shouldn't go over, but I do anyway because what the hell do I have to lose?
"Hey, Clove."
"And what are you doing here?" Clove asks putting her book down.
"Do you really want to deal with the lovebirds by yourself?" I nod my head over to Peeta and Glimmer in the lunch line.
Clove sighs and gestures for me to sit.
"So how was your break?" I ask while taking a seat next to her.
"Fine."
"Fine? That's it? That's all I get?" Clove stares blankly at me. "No, 'It was fun' or 'It was boring as hell'? Clove, give me something here."
Silence.
"Am I being punished?" I ask dramatically.
Clove rolls the hell out of her eyes.
"Gloss," she says finally. "It was fine. Wasn't good and it wasn't bad. It was just fine."
"You did nothing noteworthy?"
"Nope. No, wait—I started taking self defense classes over the break."
"That's fucking awesome! Can you flip people over now? Or do a headlock? Or twist someone's arm? Or—"
I cut myself off when Clove smiles. She has a beautiful smile. I could just stare at that smile all day. She should really smile more often.
"Thank you, Gloss," she says and the smile's is gone. Shit, I said that out loud. "But if you hit on me again I may just have to twist your arm," she jokes. At least, I hope she's joking.
I shrug. "You'd be worth the pain."
The conversation dies there when Peeta and Glimmer join us. I steal food off Peeta's plate—he doesn't seem to care—and tell Glimmer some funny stories about Peeta that I'm sure he'll kill me for later. She laughs, and when Clove tells some stories about Glimmer, Peeta laughs. When they start kissing and acting like Clove and I aren't here, Clove tells me funny stories about her and Cato. She's clearly sending me a message. Clove has a boyfriend, Cato. I'm not an idiot and I realize that this is her telling me to back off. I didn't mean to start flirting with her, but I couldn't help it. She has a boyfriend and I respect that.
But if she didn't, I'd be all over her.
After lunch Glimmer and I walk to our next class together. She invites me to the birthday party she's having in two weeks.
"I thought your birthday was next week," I say, slightly confused.
"It is, but my parents won't be here in two weeks because they're going to visit my sister at her college."
"You have a sister?"
"Two," she corrects. "I have two sisters, but that's not the point. Come to the party and you can bring your sister if you want, I don't care."
I can bring Cash? Damn, she must really want me at that party.
"Why are you inviting me anyways?"
"Because you're my boyfriend's friend," she says, and I'm not buying that for a second. "…And maybe because I haven't seen Clove smile as much as she did at lunch in a while." I did not see that one coming. "I don't why, but Clove seems to enjoy your presence, so be there. Bring all the victors, I don't care. As long as Clove is happy, I don't care."
"I don't know, Glimmer," I mumble. "Won't Cato be kind of pissed if I spend so much time with his girlfriend?"
"Please." Glimmer smirks. "The only person Cato hates seeing with Clove is Finnick." Why Finnick? "I think you're safe."
"Let me get this straight. You want me to hit on Clove? Aren't you friends with Cato?"
"Hey, there is no ring on her finger. Clove may be Cato's girlfriend, but she is free to do whatever she wants and if she wants to do you, why shouldn't she?"
I have no words.
She smiles. "Just be there and for a present…I like shoes."
…
My day was going perfect…okay, it was decent, but then I had to lose my house key. I've looked in every one of my classes already and I can't find it. Why does everything happen to me?
"Come on, Gloss," Johanna whines. "I want to go."
"What's the rush, J?" I ask while looking under chairs.
Cinna's classroom is the only room I haven't checked yet. My keys have to be in here.
"I told you to never call me J."
"Hey, how come we call Annie Ann but we don't call you Anna?"
"And why the hell would you call me Anna?"
"Cause Joh-anna, duh."
Anna face palms and groans. "Can we just go now? We told Peeta we'd met him at the bakery."
I smile. "In a minute. I just need to find my keys. Check Cinna's desk, would you?"
I check the table in the back of the classroom. I find a sweater, a pack of gum, and a hair-tie, but no keys.
Johanna mumbles something but I can't hear her that well.
"What?!"
"I said there's nothing on Cinna's desk except the stupid audition script for the play," Johanna shouts. "Ugh, who in their right mind would audition for the school's stupid play?"
"I don't know, Johanna. What I do know is that we'd find my keys a lot faster if you helped me look."
"It's utterly stupid how people freak out about auditions and call backs. I mean—" I hear Johanna flip through pages. "—this shit is so easy. Who needs a script? I could recite Shakespeare in my sleep."
I really don't care about the damn play. I just want to find my keys and go to Peeta's for some of his good ass baked muffins. But why not humor Johanna for a bit?
"Let me see the script," I snatch the script from her, take a dramatic pause and read the first line. "Lady, by yonder blessed moon I swear, that tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops—"
"O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon," Johanna says with grace. "That monthly changes in her circled orb, Lest that thy love prove likewise variable."
"What shall I swear by?"
"Do not swear at all; Or, if thou wilt, swear by thy gracious self, Which is the god of my idolatry, And I'll believe—"
"Damn," I cut Johanna off. "Not only can you recite Shakespeare, you're pretty good at it."
"Thanks."
"Maybe you should go for Juliet," I suggest.
"Please. That is never going to happen."
"But Johanna you were amazing."
"You hear me read, what, ten lines?"
"Pretty great ten lines if you asked me."
"Well—"
Someone clears their throat. Johanna and I both look towards the door to see Cinna standing nearby, a smile on his face.
"Hello," I say awkwardly. "We were just...umm—"
"Looking for Gloss' keys," Johanna says. "Have you seen them, Cinna?"
Cinna reaches into his pocket and tosses a pair of keys at me. My keys.
"Thanks, Cinna. We'll just get out of your hair." Johanna nods at my words.
"Not a fan of Romeo and Juliet, Johanna?" Cinna asks.
Johanna shakes her head. "Shakespeare is a great writer, but I just don't care for the story or the characters. I'm sorry."
"No need to be sorry, dear. Your opinion is your opinion, but I have to say, it's interesting that you know the lines when you dislike the story. Even the girls that tried out for Juliet today didn't read the lines half as well as you did."
Johanna shrugs. "We read it in class and I guess I have a pretty good memory. "
Cinna just smiles at her. It's kind of creepy actually.
"We should probably get going," I whisper to Johanna. "And Cinna is creeping me out."
Cinna laughs and I think it's because he heard me. "You wouldn't be interested in the role of Juliet, would you Johanna?"
Johanna's eyes bug out and she shakes her head.
"Are you aware that anyone in the play will receive extra credit?"
"How many points?" I ask, suddenly wanting to be in the play.
"Enough to raise your gradeby two letters potentially."
"Damn," I mumble. "Can I be Juliet?"
"What do you say, Johanna?" Cinna asks.
"I'll do it," Johanna says. "But only because I could really use an A in this class."
Cinna smiles. "Shall we discuss the details?"
"Gloss," Johanna says. "I'll meet you at Peeta's."
I leave and rush to Peeta's place. When I get there I want to tell Peeta about Johanna being Juliet because who would have guessed that, but I don't. I calmly eat muffins and plan on buying a ticket to this year's play. Johanna's so lucky, that extra credit is amazing. I wonder if I could be her Romeo?
So yeah Gloss wasn't talking about Johanna, Annie, or anyone else. Gloss was talking about Clove. So next up is Glimmer's birthday and Juliet will meet her Romeo.
Please review I know it's been awhile guys but let me know how you feel about this chapter.
