Chapter 2: You're a Great King
Hansel woke up from the blinding sunshine and chirping of birds. She jumped out of bed and headed to the bathroom and get dressed on her usual gown. Unlike yesterday, she is in a happy mood because her plan is surely going to work. She paced around her room pondering how to make her approach until an idea struck her. She smiled to herself and made her way out into the halls and thus the search for Klaus begins. She asked the servants about her brother's whereabouts but none of them knew where he is.
Desperate, she went to her last resort: her brothers. She tries to figure out which brother should she ask. Definitely not Viktor since he would just scold her for yelling at Klaus yesterday and wouldn't tell her where he is, Nikolaus would do the same or he would just ignore her, Fredbjorn would ask her questions why she yelled at Klaus and definitely won't tell her until she admits the truth, Alexander would ignore her or tell her to go away, Andrew would say "Yeah right like I'll tell ya' runt", Damien and Derek would comment about her yelling and not listen to her at all, Grant is too stupid to know where he is, one time he got lost at his own home HIS OWN FREAKING HOME!, William would either ignore or scold her, Linus spends most of his time in the dungeon also she doesn't want to talk to him…yet, and Robert would shut her off.
She bit her lip and decides to take a risk. She made her way to the grand staircase to find him and went to the living room and saw him staring through the window, chest out and arms behind his back. The side of her brain told her this is a stupid idea and she should just look for Klaus herself but her side of the brain told her that's the point of taking a risk.
"William!" she called out. William looked at her through his shoulder.
"What?" He demanded. She felt a bit scared but no, not today, not ever again.
"Have you seen Klaus?" She asked, crossing her arms.
"Oh you mean the soon-to-be king brother in which you have yelled at in that fine yesterday?" He said in a dangerously calm tone.
"Yes" She said.
"Don't flinch Hansel that's what he wants from you" she thought to herself.
He looked clearly surprised when he noticed she haven't flinched instead she stood firm.
"This is new" William thought. "This is going to be interesting"
He turned to face her arms crossed and leaning to the wall and chuckling.
"What so funny?" She demanded which made his head snapped up with cold glare.
"How dare she demand?! First she yelled at Klaus yesterday and now she's demanding me! Better teach her some manners" With that, his glare darkened at the unflinching but clearly scared Hansel who tries to keep a cool composure.
"You dare demand me you're 10th eldest brother!" He demanded rather than questioned.
"Look I'll leave you alone if you tell me where Klaus is" She said.
"And what is I don't?" He challenged with a smirk. Clearly amused of her sudden act of bravery.
"I would" She started angrily and pointing at him accusingly but can't think of a good bluff "I would" she lowers her finger and voice slowly dies down.
"See, you can't even make a good bluff for me to spill. You're so pathetic and-" Before he could finish his rant, Hansel felt her blood boil and bravely strides towards him, grabbing his collar with both hands, making him bend over to her eye level and giving him best death glare yet.
"Listen here BROTHER I've been through a LOT for the past years and I'm just asking you just this ONCE! To tell me where Klaus is?!" Hansel finished her angry rant, face red from anger but suddenly she felt like she did a huge mistake as William stared at her wide-eyed before staring at her in the eyes accompanied with a small glare.
"Great! I messed up! He's not going to tell me and he will hate me more and – why is he chuckling?" She thought as William chuckled and move her hands away and turns back to the window as he straightened his collar.
"In his room" He finally answered.
"Uh" Hansel is shocked, this is the first time William gave her the answer she needs.
"What? Cat got your tongue?" He smirked.
"No!" She said so quickly, clearly embarrassed.
"Are you sure he is on his room?" She asked for assurance hoping it's not some sort of trick.
"Of course it's not a trick, he is a militant, a militant don't make tricks unless it's used for war" She scold herself realizing how stupid her question was.
"Probably" He smirked earning a glare from Hansel. She looked ready to hit him but realizes that's not what she's here for and turns around making her way out. She paused and turned to him and murmured a "thanks" loud enough for him to hear. His eyes followed her out through the window's reflection.
She starts making her way to Klaus's room and passing by the twins, Damien and Derek, who stopped on their tracks.
"Hey Hansel!" One of them yelled which made Hansel stop and grit her teeth with annoyance. She turned around with a fake smile clearly hiding her annoyance.
"Yes" she hissed through her teeth.
"Nice what you did yesterday" Derek complimented. Hansel stiffened at the mention.
"Yeah! I mean you should've seen the look on his face! So confused and sad, he didn't even eat dinner last night!" Damien said happily.
"Yeah! He sulked all day – yesterday and he locked himself in his own room and refused to get out" Derek said. The twins laughed happily despite the given situation. Hansel's blood is boiling again but tries to keep her cool, she will NOT let the twins bother her today. William decides to watch the situation with an eyebrow raised clearly interested.
"He'll -gasp- never -gasp- make a -gasp- good king" They said between gasps and laughter but Hansel lost it.
"SHUT UP!" She yelled causing the two to jump and stare at her with wide eyes.
"YOU DON'T TALK ILL TO KLAUS LIKE THAT EVEN BEHIND HIS BACK! HE WILL MAKE A GREAT KING! AND IF SOMEONE HERE ARE GOING TO BE TERRIBLE KINGS THAT WOULD BE YOU TWO IMBECILES!" Hansel yelled so loud she lost her breathe. After few heavy intakes of air, she pulled herself together once more.
"Now don't you two have something more important to do than waste you're lives insulting one person to another?" Hansel said before turning away and making her way to Klaus' room in another hallway. The twins gaped until Hansel vanished from one hallway to another. Both jumped when they heard chuckling from behind. They see William's hand over his mouth and asks them a "What?"
Still awestruck from Hansel's sudden outburst, they let out a huff and stormed passed William.
Hansel made a few turns of the palace hallways and managed to get to Klaus' room safely…except without few insults from her beloved brothers while the twins are nowhere to be found, clearly planning on revenge for what she said earlier but for now…she must apologize, like NOW. She felt a bit nervous and remembered what the twins said about Klaus being yesterday and today, so she have to make her approach smooth. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door. No answer. She knocked again and this time she heard footsteps, a doorknob being unlocked, and a chain being unhinged.
"Is really this upset…better make this right" she thought to herself. The door opens revealing a tired and weary Klaus with a surprised look on his face.
"Hi" She meekly said. "Can I come in?"
Before you knew it, they are sitting in chair in front of each other with a small yet fancy table separating them. Both looking down at the ground and Hansel biting her lip, clearly don't know what to say to each other.
"I-" They both started but ends up cutting each other's speeches off.
"You go first" Hansel insisted.
"No you go first" Klaus said.
"Please I insist" Hansel said. Klaus wants to counter back insisting her to go first but stopped realizing they both can do this all day long. He took a deep breath.
"Am I going to be a terrible king?" He asked looking down with shame and slouching.
"What? No!" Hansel said. He looked at her.
"Hansel do you truly think I'm going to be a terrible king?" He asked again.
"No that's not true nor will it ever be!" Hansel countered back.
"Hansel please don't lie to me" He begged only to make Hansel mad. She stood up and stride over him with her hands on messy shirt.
'That's not true! YOU are a GREAT king!" Hansel yelled this time.
"Look at the facts Hansel! I am soft, weak…I have emotions" His voice died down on the "emotions" part.
"AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES YOU A GREAT KING! A GREAT KING MUST HAVE EMOTIONS IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND HIS SUBJECTS!" She lectured.
"But what you said yesterday was-" Klaus was cut off when Hansel continued yelling.
"WHAT I SAID YESTERDAY ISN'T TRUE! I WAS MAD AND UPSET I END UP TAKING MY ANGER OUT TO YOU! IF SOMEONE IS TERRIBLE IT IS ME!" With that she took a deep breath. This wasn't really part pf the plan she was hoping for but it makes him feel better from what happened yesterday then it's all worth it. She falls back to her chair, staring at her hands on her lap. The sight made Klaus feel unhappy seeing his baby sister, his one and only little sister, youngest of the brood, upset. He felt himself being pulled together.
"Young lady, that is not true" He said with confidence.
She looked up to see him standing over her and holding her chin.
"You are not little girl any more but a young woman, strong and independent and NEVER terrible at something or anything" He said wisely. She laughed.
"See! I told you so!" She bragged with a wide grin spread across her face.
"Huh" He caught totally off guard at his sister's sudden change of personality.
"You'll be a great king" She said. He smiled. She playfully punched his shoulder.
"How about pull yourself together, get out there, and be the great king they expect from you, maybe you'll become the greatest king the world would ever see!" She added.
"You're right Hansel" He is now beaming with 2x more pride and confidence than ever making Hansel smile at the sight. He turns to her.
"Thank you…sister" He said making Hansel's cold heart warm up because he said "sister" after many years of being unable to talk to each other he finally said it.
"You're welcome brother" she clapped her hands together. "Well I will see you later then, Good-bye~" she sang as she turns around and reaches for the door.
"Leaving already" He asked, clearly upset she already leaving his happy atmosphere.
"Yes I… have a lot of things to do and I haven't eaten breakfast" She said, she have to admit she feels bad cheering him up and suddenly leaving, she hopes this excuse is good enough.
"Right, right I see…but could you visit more often from now on?" He said clearly understanding her recent situation.
"Of course I would" Before she left, she peeks head back in.
"Oh and get some breakfast you haven't eaten anything and I'm not eating with them without you so hurry up" She demanded in happy and joking tone on her voice.
"Yeah yeah sure mom" He teasingly said. Sometimes he teased her by calling her "mom" since she clearly looks like their mother. She pouted before smiling again and walking out shutting the door. She have a wide smile on her face because of her achievement.
"You look so happy" A voice said. Hansel's head snapped to direction of the voice and her brother William leaning on a wall with arms crossed and an amused expression.
"You heard that?" Hansel squeaked.
"Oh, just all of it" William said. Hansel let out a huff.
"Why should you care anyways?" She said.
"Of course I card since Klaus will be the king and I will be under his power, I'm surprised you apologize…you never apologize to anything at all" He said.
"What's wrong about being apologetic?" She asked. He replied with only a shrug.
"Whatever I'm not wasting my time talking to you…yet" Hansel said, whispering the "yet" part.
"What did you say?" His ears caught the "yet" part.
"Nothing" She said as she passes by him and made her way to the dining hall.
"Oh and twins are plotting something evil against you, I'd watch my back if I were you" He warned but Hansel didn't take it seriously. Until it was too late, once reach the end of the hall, they dumped her 3-day old chum on her while the brothers on the table some were laughing, some just ignored her, some looked at her pitifully while some are just doing their business not bothering to look up at all. Hansel felt embarrassed once more, first yesterday and now today. The twins were in front of her face.
"That's what you get for yelling at us!" Damien said, laughing.
"Yeah" Derek said, laughing.
She wants to yell at them again but then a booming yell from behind demanded: "WHAT'S GOING ON?!"
They turned and saw Klaus who is now well-dressed and pulled together with William behind him. He sends all of them a glare when he saw Hansel covered with chum. He turned to the twins who are now flinching under his death glare that can kill a beast.
"Apologize" Klaus said plainly yet demandingly. Hansel smirked at the twins with arms crossed. The brothers who aren't interested to look up are now looking at the situation with interest.
"Pfft what for?" Derek bravely said.
"For dumping chum on my - our sister" Klaus said. Hansel's smirk got wider as the brother's interest grew.
"Or else what?" Damien challenged.
"If you don't apologize, you two will get a punishment" Klaus threatened.
"Like you'll do that" Derek said, clearly not taking the threat seriously.
"You can't even hurt a fly" Damien said, also not taking the threat seriously.
"Oh no I'm not the one choosing the punishment" Klaus said. Which made the twins give a questioning look.
"It's William choosing the punishment" Klaus said.
"WHAT?!" The twins said and looked at William who smirking deviously at them.
"If you don't want the punishment then apologize" Klaus puts his large hand and patting on Hansel's head. But the twins' ego is just as high as their pride. So they chose punishment.
"Punishment" They said. Klaus snapped his fingers which made William pull out a shotgun and yelled "COME HERE YOU BRATS!" which made the twins scream girlishly and William chases after them. With their voices vanishing, Klaus turned to his sister. The brothers on the table watched with shock while some are snickering before going back to their food.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yes, I'm okay because of you" She smiled.
"Get yourself clean" He said and she nodded. And she headed off to her room leaving them alone.
Klaus takes his place on the table and ate as if nothing happened.
"I see you're no longer upset" Viktor said.
"Oh not anymore nor will it ever be" Klaus replied.
"What did the brat say to you?" Nikolaus asked. Klaus shot him glare before going to his food.
"First of all Nikolaus, she is not a brat and secondly she apologized" Klaus pointed out.
"She apologized?" Fredbjorn said, surprised since Hansel rarely apologizes.
"Of course and she made me feel better after our talk" Klaus said. In the background you can hear screaming of the twins and yelling of William, ignoring it because they are used to it.
"I see" Fredbjorn said.
They continued eating until every brother left the table. All except Klaus patiently waits for Hansel.
"Who are you waiting for brother?" Viktor asked from behind making Klaus slightly jump at Viktor who suddenly popped out of nowhere.
"For Hansel of course" Klaus answered.
"Why?" Viktor asked.
"I would like to accompany her eating so she won't feel left out" Klaus explained.
"Why should you wait for her? You two don't even see each other eye-to-eye" Viktor sneered.
"Viktor" Klaus said dangerously. "It's been years we've got into a real conversation and I notice how good she is…you should give her a chance" Klaus said.
"Why on earth would I give her a chance? She's weak" Viktor argued.
"She isn't, just give her a chance and you will like her trust me" Klaus said.
"But-" Viktor was cut off.
"Viktor please, just this once for me, I swear you will learn to like her" Klaus said. Viktor glared at him before taking deep breath.
"Fine, I'll give it a chance" Viktor said crossing his arms.
"Thank you" Klaus said. Viktor nodded and walked away. Passing by a now clean Hansel whom he shot a look before walking off.
"Brother, why are you still here?" Hansel asked when she saw Klaus still on the table.
"Thought you need company" He said.
"You don't have to" She said before sliding on her chair.
"Oh but I insist" He said smiling making Hansel roll her eyes as digs in her food. They started a conversation about politics and diplomats, making jokes and laughing. Until heavy footsteps and breathing is heard in the dining hall. They saw Damien and Derek tired, weary, covered with dirt and sweat after William's punishment which was extreme military exercises with William himself standing behind them with a satisfied smile on his face.
"Klaus they learned their lesson" William announced proudly.
"Good" Klaus said before looking down at the twins.
"I hope you two have learned for making my-our little sister upset" He finished. Hansel covers her mouth trying to contain her laughter. When Klaus looked at her, she looked him with an innocent smile despite the evilness hidden underneath it.
"Thank you William you may go now" Klaus said and William simply did what he say and dragged the twins behind him.
"Don't worry sister they won't bother anymore" Klaus reassured.
"I wouldn't worry at all" She smiled.
And so the day goes on, after dinner Hansel's day went great no more pranks and no one bothering her, Klaus doing some kingly duties. But before the day ends, she visits him and made another conversation which happened to be funny. After that they say "goodnights" to each other and went on their separate ways. Hansel plops on her bed with a wide grin. Her plan went GREAT! Tomorrow, she takes on Viktor. She shuts her eyes and went into another dreamless sleep.
Notes: You're probably saying "why is Klaus' personality like that, Emma never mentioned him being unconfident". I only made him like that because he is the eldest of the brood, breadwinner, and soon-to-be king so everyone is expecting a lot from him making him nervous about his decisions and clearly looking for other's approval (usually their parents) because a great king must always make a good decisions that will benefit everyone and eventually became confident believing he have enough morals for him to be a great king but ever since Hansel told him he "will be a terrible king" he starts to question his kingliness but it's happy ending for this chapter.
