8. When We Were Young
The room was empty, and cold which was surprising to a vampire who typically couldn't feel anything like that. This was truly astonishing, and even as she ran around attempting to find an exit Calix knew she wouldn't be able to. He stood in the centre of the room, watching Charlotte turn her hateful glare at him and he just shrugged. He knew what that look meant, he'd seen it plenty of times before even if it had never been directed at him before. Calix knew that this would all be confusing to her, she'd never been trapped in a room using this kind of magic before, and he'd known this because he's kept his eye on her for her entire life. As creepy as this may sound he'd never seen it that way, no he'd just been interested in her is all. And honestly, he thought to himself, who wouldn't be interested in her.
10th Century: Mystic Falls
It was the middle of the night and Charlotte snuck out of the small hut she shared with her brother and parents. She'd kept her hand in her pocket clutched tightly around the sage that she planned on burning once she'd reached her destination. Charlotte almost couldn't believe that she was doing this, not only was in dangerous, considering the monsters that lurked in the night but it was sort of completely out of character for her. Her feet were crunching on twigs as she ran through the darkness towards their meeting place, hoping desperately that no one had noticed her slipping off into the night. It was four days before her 18th birthday and she knew that her mother expected her to marry soon, and as much as she wanted to please her mother she knew that they wouldn't be pleased with this choice she'd made. She stopped running as she saw the faint glow of light coming from a cave and she grinned to herself, walking into the entrance of the cave and heading over to where she could see him standing there. He turned as she entered and pulled her into his arms tightly. Charlotte was so pleased to finally see him again, knowing that they hardly ever had this time to themselves. "I've missed you" she muttered honestly as she buried her face into his strong chest. She felt him chuckle then and he looked down at her, kissing the top of her head then. Charlotte loved him so entirely, she was just so obsessed with him and she knew her mother would never approve. "Do you think your mother will ever understand this?" he asked her then, looking down at her still even as she shook her head slowly. "You're trying to find a way to immortalise witches, Calix" she muttered to him as she pulled the sage out of her pocket and lighting it with the fire Calix had already lit, she then cast a spell so that their conversation would be private. She turned back to Calix and they began one of their many blissful nights together.
Present time
Calix was just looking at her, knowing that she doesn't remember him at all, and as much as that hurt he'd come to terms with it. "Stop struggling Charlotte" he half snapped to her, crossing his arms as she continued to search for a way out of the small room they were trapped in. "You can't escape, I mean you'd think you'd recognise magic when you see it" Calix commented and even after Charlotte turned to glare at him he just looked at her as if nothing in the world affected him. Calix just watched as she walked towards him slowly, a look of hatred on her face that would have pained Calix in the past. He rolled his eyes slightly as she lunged at him, he just stood there and took it before he flipped them over, his hand locked on her throat as he pressed her against the wall. "I'm not scared of you Charlotte, you can't hurt me in here. We're stuck here together, forever." Calix muttered through his teeth to her, holding onto her tightly. Calix knew they wouldn't actually be stuck here forever, because as soon as Mikael killed Klaus then Charlotte would also die, and if Klaus somehow managed to kill Mikael then Calix would die. So really it was just a waiting game for them.
Klaus felt everything inside of him explode with anger, they had killed his doppelganger. His only way to create hybrids, the only thing that actually mattered to him in this moment was now destroyed because of two people he'd thought he could trust to leave alone for a few weeks. Rebekah's phone call had gotten him angry, and the last thing they needed was an angry Klaus on their hands, he left immediately to head straight back to Mystic Falls where he knew they still would be, celebrating by themselves in their own depressing kind of way. Oh how thrilled they'll be with my return, he thought bitterly to himself as he drove away from the hotel he'd been staying in and towards the airport where he would soon be catching a plane back to America. And Charlotte, thought Klaus, Charlotte would be getting the full force of his anger, he could understand his sister crushing him so entirely but Charlotte, the one friend he'd ever had in this world? He could not understand that. To think he'd almost admitted to himself that he'd loved her, it was astounding to him now.
Every minute he spent traveling back to Mystic Falls his anger grew, he just hoped that the rest of his family weren't there. He didn't need to deal with Elijah's judging looks, Kol's crazed antics or Finn's cold and bitter disapproval. He only wished for Rebekah and Charlotte to be there, so he could punish them to no end. And he supposed a small part of him really hoped that Elizabeth was there, and that she was without the pathetic human he'd seen her with. He needed someone to keep him sane right now and honestly, Elizabeth was usually the only person who could do that, a huge part of him hated that and he knew that without her there this time around, he could very well kill Charlotte… he was already brandishing the dagger that would soon be piercing through his beloved sisters heart, and he knew that he was, at this point, angry enough to actually kill Charlotte for good.
Elizabeth had remained in Mystic Falls after Elena had been killed to assist with her friends, the Salvatore's were absolutely crushed… and what made it worse was that there was no body, Damon had seen Charlotte snap her neck and afterwards was confronted with Rebekah, but they could not find her body. She was currently in the Boarding House, sitting in their parlour drinking bourbon with Stefan, trying to comfort him, trying to convince him that he'd find love again but honestly how would she even know? She'd spent her whole life trying to find love outside of Klaus but she hadn't succeeded, she knew that the chances were very grim for her and for Stefan, but she desperately hoped that he would be happy. She'd come to realise that Stefan was an excellent person, and Damon with his rough exterior really wasn't too bad either, compared to Klaus that was. Elizabeth was just about to pour herself another bourbon when she heard tires pulling up on the gravel outside and she stood up to look towards the door to see who would be coming through the door.
Elizabeth let out a soft sigh as she heard Caroline's voice, on the phone to someone she hadn't identified. She'd gotten to know Caroline lately as she'd been spending her time trying to find out what Rebekah had done with Elena's body, hoping herself that she wasn't actually dead. The Salvatore's – especially Damon – both thought that she was crazy and that she should simply give up and accept that her best friend had gone. Caroline though, had even convinced Bonnie that there could be hope and she'd gotten her searching for her, using magic but so far she'd been unsuccessful, she'd claimed that her magic was being blocked by something stronger. Caroline let herself in then and shut the door rather loudly behind her "So I was right" she muttered, sounding rather triumphantly, Stefan on the couch beside Elizabeth rolled his eyes while Damon in the corner ran a hand through his hair tiredly. "You have found her then?" she asked whoever was on the phone, which everyone in the room was assuming was Bonnie. Caroline then let out a little squeal and hung up the phone, "Bonnie says Elena is in Georgia… and here's where it gets really weird…" Caroline said, pausing dramatically while the Salvatore's and Elizabeth both looked at her expectantly "She's with Katherine." Elizabeth then heard Stefan's glass clunk to the floor, she saw Damon's jaw drop in disbelief and she shook her head "Katherine's dead, she died in the sacrifice" she said simply, not wanting to believe for a second that she was still alive. She'd never really liked her but also, she didn't want Elijah to have even gone through the pain of thinking he'd lost someone if they weren't really dead.
Elijah was sitting beside Katherine, a frown on his face as he watched Elena, who was currently chained to the bed, fast asleep. "So they killed you… why?" he asked Katherine softly, trying not to wake Elena as he did so. He saw Katherine shrug her shoulders and stand up, clearly annoyed that her plan had failed, because she could no longer impersonate a doppelganger they knew had died. "I have no idea, I was just getting close to them all… I was so close to finally getting what I wanted, Elijah." She complained, giving him a serious look, making him half laugh at her as he knew there would be another way for her to get what she wanted. "Patience, Katerina." He said softly to her, standing up also and touching her cheek gently. He'd missed her while she'd been gone, and he'd hated that he'd had to contain Elena for her, but if it would get back at his brother then he was all for it.
