Chapter 14: A Teenage Globetrotter and a Former East Coaster

Douglas 'Uncle Undercover' Squirrel grew up back in the East Coast with his identical twin brother, James but, after quitting the rather dangerous yet fantastic job that he had with his brother for personal reasons, he moved cross-country to here, after hearing stories from James's then-new bride, Scarlett. While the adults who grew in town were initially wary of him, the local children just loved him. To them, Doug was that awesomely badass uncle that they always wanted and would come to him if they needed something. Eventually, the adults got used to him.

Today, he was heading for his sister-in-law's house to spend some time with his nephew. According to the local children, he now goes by the name 'Secret Squirrel'.

Interesting choice.

He knocked on the door and answered Scarlett, wearing her usual blue dress with her favorite red bandanna tied around her head.

"Finally!" she greeted, "'Bout time you come and visit!" with a big grin.

"Actually, Scarly," admitted Undercover, "I'm here to spend time with my nephew."

Deadpan, she replied, "He's upstairs," and let him in.

As he walked in her home, he couldn't help but, admire the decor.

"Nice," he commented, whistling.

"Thanks," answered Scarlett, "It's what happens when you go all over the world, you end up with so many pretty souvenirs."

"Of course."

"If you're still looking for Secret, you'll know just where to find him," said Scarlett as she headed for the back door.

Undercover walked up the stairs, spotting a photograph of James and Scarlett with a then-toddler Secret on the way up. He then listened closely and found his room.

Walking in, he took it all in.

Blueprints took over the walls, except for posters of Agent Honeydew, they remained uncovered. The blueprints each had an idea filling with promise, whether it was mundane like a jetpack, interesting but may cause people to lose their jobs, like that automatic hairstyler or something useful like a laser cannon- HEY! Wait a minute!

"Secret?" he asked, to which, Secret's head snapped up and turned to face him, away from his almost completed invention. His uncle couldn't help but, chuckle at the sight of Secret's thick goggles replacing his baseball cap.

"Hi, Uncle Undercover!" he excitedly greeted him, surprised that he'd come to visit today.

Staring at the device on the table, the older squirrel pointed out, "I told you I was going to let you test out a laser cannon when turned eighteen."

"Yeah," replied the teenager, brushing the bangs off his face, mildly embarrassed, "I just don't wanna wait for two more years."

"EGAD! Just where did you get the power source for it?" Undercover cried out, referring to the metal suitcase covered in stickers to warn of just how dangerous are it's contents.

Secret, as causally as ever, answered, "I know a guy."

It was the way he said that reminded him of James during all of those extremely dangerous missions, way back when they worked together as partners.

"James, where did you get that? You know it dangerous!"

"Meh, I know a guy."

Secret couldn't help but, notice that his uncle was looking at him funny.

In a trance, Undercover said, "You're just like your father," to which Secret scowled in disgust, bring him out of his trance.

"He's not that bad, just busy," he continued.

Secret simply rolled his eyes in response.

"Anyways," Undercover asked, hoping to change the subject, "How's about I take you around town?"

"Sure, I guess, I could use a break," answered Secret, taking off his goggles and putting his baseball cap back on.

"Good," Undercover laughed, while thinking, "Well, at least, he's not gonna blow himself up now."

"And that's how this town was founded!" exclaimed Undercover, excitedly, finishing telling his nephew all about this town's history, "Any questions?"

"...What?" Secret yawned.

"I'm not boring you, am I"

"No," Secret replied, "I always sleepwalk during the day," but, then muttered under his breath, "Plus, I forgot my iPod."

"Secret Melvin Squirrel," Undercover chastised him, somehow hearing him, perhaps it had something to do with his old job, he learned to listen well, "You should know by now, you have to prepare for anything! It's something we Squirrels take pride in! What if there was an emergency and due to your carelessness, you forgot something important!"

But before Secret could respond, this happened.

"Dude, your middle name is Melvin?" asked a random student, a mouse, not unlike Blabber Mouse, only much, much smaller, dressed like a your average high school jock, riding on a shoulder of a very nerdy orange-furred kat, wearing taped-up glasses, white button down shirt, completely pocket pouch, though, Secret's sure he'd never seen him write anything down, and blue bowtie, a route that, despite his own quirks, Secret would never want to go down, with another mouse, which could easily pass off as the other mouse's twin, dressed as a male cheerleader, on the kat's other shoulder.

Before Secret could say anything, despite his face reddening, the kat, named Jinks started to sing out, "Melvin, Melvin, Brother of the Joker! Melvin, Melvin, Brother of the Joker!..." and kept at it until having enough, Secret punched him in the gut... hard, knocking him on the sidewalk.

"Secret, show a little restraint," said Undercover, to his nephew, shocked despite also being annoyed by the kat's obnoxiousness, but the kids on the ground, he said, "Sorry about that."

"Nah, don't worry about it, Uncle Undercover," replied the jock mouse, known as Pixie, or The Pix, who along with his look-a-like, was just fine, "You'd be surprised just how often this happens."

The cheerleader mouse, Dixie, nodded in agreement.

The kat suddenly sat up and painfully shouted, "I'm cool!", pointed up at the sky before passing out again.

"Don't worry," said Dixie, reassuringly, "We're used to this."

Undercover shook his head at Secret, disapprovingly, before they went on their way.

As they walked, they encountered Super Snooper and Blabber Mouse, walking. Snooper was clearly annoyed at how Blabber was distracted by dancing girls in front of a radio shop.

The girls were, of course, Bunny Rabbit, Dee Dee Specman and Penny Ardilla and they were dancing to The Cattanooga Cats' latest hit single 'Do You Dig The Music?'.

Secret kind of wished he had his camera with him so, he could record Penny's dancing, for reasons.

Unfortunately for Blab, he was so distracted that he ran into a pole, and worst of all, the girls saw. They were just giggling at the mouse.

Shaking himself off, Blabber looked at his best friend, who simply shook his head and lead him away from the girls.

'What's his problem?" Secret wondered to himself.

Undercover waved at the girls and of course, the girls waved back and so, the older squirrel nudged his nephew to wave, too. So he did, much more bashfully, causing the girls to laugh as they waved back.

As soon as he saw the look in Secret's face, Undercover couldn't stop chuckling, much to his nephew's embarrassment.

"Look, Secret!" the uncle exclaimed, pointing at the giant statue depicting a horse dressed as a cowboy with a much shorter Mexican burro in the center of town, "It's Quick Draw McGraw and Baba Looey's statue."

"Oh, yeah, Bunny already showed me this, she called it 'The Jackass who Hung Out with a Donkey."

"Well..., the Rabbit and the McGraw clans are known for not seeing eye-to-eye."

"I can see that," Secret said, crossing his arms.

Suddenly, there was a loud scream, primal yet shrill, fierce yet excited, wild beyond all reason.

This is the cry of the fangirl.

Suddenly, the fangirls stampeded across town, causing chaos at their wake and the locals began to panic and close up shop.

Undercover, using all of his skills from his old job, managed to sneak away but, unfortunately, Secret, despite having a somewhat similar skill set, albeit unpolished, shaken around like a rag doll. Eventually, much to his humiliation, he face-planted on the sidewalk. At least, Penny, who surprisingly enough was among the fangirls, had the courtesy to apologize, unfortunately, Secret, much to his chagrin, began to pass out again, as she said it.

"Sorry... Cats interview... TV... can't talk... Country... so hot...

"Dougie, I think he's waking up!"

Slowly, Secret's eyes opened and found himself staring face-to-face with an adult female kat with mahogany-colored fur, hair tied into bun, wearing a teal handkerchief around her neck, a blue jacket and a pair of jeans. Apparently, she's one of those ladies who don't feel the need to ever wear a shirt.

Focusing now, Secret could tell that he had soon her somewhere before.

"...Agatha Clawing?"

Agatha Clawing is a very prolific mystery writer, able to come many a good story that tingled the spine and truly made the reader think.

"Actually," she explained, laughing, "I use my maiden name for professional reasons, my last name is actually Snooper but, it's always a pleasure to meet a fan."

"Well, actually..."

Secret's not much of a mystery fan, he mainly read the books whenever he's really desperate for something to do or if he's in trouble. Though, he does tend to be impressed by her stories. That said it's just not his cup of tea.

That was when Undercover came back.

"Sorry about leaving you there, Secret," he said, somewhat embarrassed, "I panicked."

To which Agatha burst out laughing, saying, "Really? Retired agent, used to near-death experiences, afraid of teenage girls fangirling over a band.

"It's not that funny," said the normally calm Undercover, through clenched teeth.

"Actually, it's plenty funny."

"Agent? Near-death experiences?" was all Secret was thinking about.

"What was all of that about anyway?" asked Undercover, curious.

Agatha replied, "Cattanooga Cats interview on TV."

"Your nephew's in that band, isn't he?"

"Yep! Country McClaw!" answered Agatha, "I'm so proud of him."

"I once sat through one of their live concerts on TV with some of those girls but, is it just me or does Country have an obvious crush on...?"

"Kitty Jo?"

"Yes."

"Well, he was never good at hiding it, you'd think she would've noticed by now," replied Agatha, when she noticed how bored Secret was, "Would you like a snow cone?"

He nodded.

"What flavor?"

"I don't care."

She then left to buy him that snow cone.

"Listen, Secret," said Undercover, "I wanted to take you to Ricochet Rabbit's for a milkshake and a hot fudge sundae but, because of what normally happens after a fangirl situation, we won't be to go so, how's about we go to my house, if you don't mind sharing me with Adam?"

"I don't," replied Secret, before asking, "Wait, this is normal?"

"You have no idea."

That was when Agatha came back with a medium-sized snow cone.

"Hope you like vanilla," she said, with a smile.

"Thanks," he said, drinking it.

"You know," asked Agatha, out loud to no one in particular, "This fangirl business takes me back when me, Scarly, and Bets were fawning over the musical stylings of Background Chase Scene. Maybe I should relive those days."

"Well, goodbye to you, Aggie," said Undercover, waving to her, quietly he said to Secret, "Say goodbye to Mrs. Snooper."

"Oh right! Goodbye, Mrs. Snooper!"

"Goodbye, Dougie, goodbye, Secret!" she shouted, waving back, excitedly, "Say hi to Scarly for me!"

"Oh, we will!"

As the Squirrels headed for Undercover's, looking around, over the damage, "Jumping bail bonds! Those girls really know how to damage a town!"

"Yep," replied Undercover, "I don't envy who has to clean it all up, now let's go!"

To be continued...

For those who don't know, Uncle Undercover was actual character in a cartoon but while I liked the idea of him, I didn't like the execution.

Aggie Snooper, on the other hand, I made her up for this story.

'Do You Dig The Music?' is an actual Cattanooga Cats song and it is awesome.

Also, Secret passing out has something to do with Nurse Winnie Witch's spell.

Next chapter, Cattanooga Cats Interview. See ya later, dudes.
