Chapter 11 - Closure
The music was blaring as they walked into Sanctuary. It eliminated any talking that they had been doing. Well, really the talking Killian had been doing. Emma had stayed quite silent the whole walk. He had turned on his charm in full force and nothing seemed to work, she didn't even smile. In light of how they had parted a few months ago he supposed he couldn't blame her. But he would get through her cracks again.
When the door closed behind them, she gave him a pointed look and walked to the bar and took an empty stool between a were-bear and a low level demon. She probably wasn't aware that they were anything but humans. He knew the demon from Loki, they seemed to keep the same company and Loki used the demon for little tasks. Killian leaned back against the wall and watched, his booted foot propped up behind him. As the low level demon turned to face her a full smile on his face, he crossed his arms across his chest and clenched his jaw. It was going to be a very long night.
"I haven't seen you around here." The low level demon told Emma in a husky low voice. Killian observed as she turned fully to the demon and flipped her hair over her shoulder a brilliant smile upon her perfect lips.
"I'm a little new to the area, still trying to find a place I belong." She replied, and Killian could sense a truth to her words. It made his sensitive hearing focus in on her so much that he thought he could hear her tiny breaths and the beat of her heart. But that wasn't possible, especially in the Friday night crowd at Sanctuary.
The place was always busy, but the weekends it was packed. They even had local bands that came and played, which got people dancing, there was nothing like live music to get bodies moving. Especially if Ash was on stage, he seemed to have the same problem with attracting the attention of males and females alike as Killian did. But it worked for the band. He suspected that they had to bribe him to get him up there, even though he was amazing.
"For what it's worth I think you fit in fine here." The demon eyed her up and down with a barely concealed leer. "I'm Jason." He leaned even closer to her. Killian noticed right away when Emma tensed for a split second before leaning towards the demon with a laugh that sounded practiced, nothing like her real one.
Her hand landed on the man's chest and it took everything in her to keep it there. She looked up at him coyly through her lashes. "I'm Sarah, and it's nice to find a place to belong." Emma went so far as to bat her lashes at him. "Buy me a drink?" She purred and flexed her fingers on against his chest. Jason nodded and turned to face the bartender, who had a monkey on his shoulder of all things. Weird.
It took everything in her not to glance over at Killian, it felt as though he was burning holes in the back of her head. Finally giving in she shifted in her seat a little and looked in the direction she felt him from, his gaze was fixed on the stage to his left, and he looked rather relaxed leaning against the wall. Focusing back on the guy next to her she turned up her flirting persona, while trying to tell herself it wasn't to make Killian jealous. The time Emma had given herself to find Neal didn't feel like enough time and she really needed to forget thoughts of making Killian jealous, as if she could. Turning her attention back to the conversation she was having she picked up her drink and took a long drink to clear her head.
A band started to play on the stage behind her and the beat of the drum started to fill her chest. She had always loved the beat of a drum. "Let's dance." Jason said as he grabbed her hand and pulled her up from her bar stool. With a forced laugh she put her now empty glass down on the bar and let him drag her to the small dance floor near the stage. The man had no rhythm and she had a hard time finding a way to dance with him. He solved that by pulling her to him and she let him. The night before he had been pointed out as a friend of Neal's and if she could get close to him she could find Neal.
As Jason spun her around, completely off beat, she lost track of where Killian had gone. The spot he had been was empty and she couldn't find him anywhere. So much for watching to make sure she was safe. The guy she was dancing with was a run of the mill creep and only her resolve to find Neal and get closure kept her in his arms.
Killian moved around the dance floor to keep a close eye on Emma with the demon. They were in Sanctuary, but sometimes bad things did happen here. Demon's hands started to drift lower and he pulled her closer. Helplessly Killian watched as Emma let him, just as she had let him pull her to him all those months ago. A simmering jealousy started in the pit of his stomach. Why was he feeling this way about this girl? He was doing this to get Milah back, wasn't he? Did he want to get Milah back? Or should he choose Liam, his brother, he had missed him after he had been gone. Focusing back on the pair dancing like they were one on the dance floor he couldn't stop himself from moving forward to claim her when the demon's hand started to drift lower down her back. He had to feel her in his arms, it was a need that he couldn't stop. Even if Milah was the one so long ago, there was something about the girl that was right in front of him, it was too strong to resist.
Emma tried to put a little space between their bodies as they continued to dance. As much as she wanted information having him grind his parts against her parts was not appealing in the least. Jason's hands started to edge towards her lower back and just as she was going to break away, Killian was there.
Jason's startled face as he was pulled away would have been almost comical if she hadn't needed information from him. "I believe you owe me a dance." Killian growled at her as he pushed Jason towards the edge of the dance floor and away from her. Suddenly his hook snaked out and linked through one of her belt loops on her leather pants, pulling her swiftly to him.
A breath of air puffed out of her chest as she collided with his well-muscled chest. "This is not helping." She informed him breathless, her hands resting on his leather vest. "I needed information from that man."
"And the way to get it is to let him put his hands all over your body?" Killian looked down at her, his face fierce in his intensity, a tick in his jaw caught her attention. Almost as if he was clenching it so he didn't say more.
Emma tried to put some space between their bodies but he held on tightly, holding her to him. "Killian." She said in warning.
"Shh, love, enjoy the moment." He whispered his voice softening at her ear before nuzzling her neck. It sent shivers through her at the slight contact of his nose and lips against her collarbone. Maybe the off the shoulders shirt was a bad choice, she thought absently as he moved her with the beat of the song. It had changed to a slow ballad about love and loss, the emotions filled the lyrics and drifted over the crowd. She would not soften to his hold no matter how good it felt. She was here on business not pleasure. Liar, her mind supplied, and the moment she had run into Killian, the night had become about more than business. "That's it, relax." He murmured as he held her even closer.
"How do you suggest I get my information then?" Emma asked as she allowed herself to move with him freely. The leather of their pants brushed together sinfully and she could feel desire for the man before her filling her.
"You could always ask." He replied simply with a dazzling smile, "you would be surprised with how many people would be willing to help a beautiful woman when she only asks for the help. But you are not going to get much out of Jason. He isn't the type to be trusted, and would be more likely to lie to get into your pants then to tell you the truth."
"You know Jason?" Emma asked, her interest in what he knew was peaked.
"I know quite a many people that frequent this bar." He gestured to the dancers around them.
It dawned on her why this place had seemed familiar to her when she first heard of it. He was going to bring her here to keep her safe all those months ago. To leave her with Ruby, the waitress she had met the other evening. "You know Ruby don't you." He gave her a nod in confirmation and spun her around.
"Is there someone you are searching for?" Killian asked pulling back from her less than a foot to look into her eyes.
The struggle between telling him and not telling him warred within her. Did she really want to ask him to help her find the ex that had her locked up? Was it something she could do? She shook her head, "just a mark," her voice cracked with the lie.
"Right." He nodded at her, clearly not believing a word she just said. "Well then why don't we occupy ourselves with something more enjoyable for a bit." He inhaled deeply next to her pulse point, intoxicating. His hand ran down her side no longer holding her to him. The jealous he had felt when the demon had his hands on her dissipated with her in his arms and he was able to smile at her again. "What do you say love?"
"I have work to do, and if you can't help me, then I need to find someone who will." She pushed back from him. Emma couldn't afford the distraction.
"Wait, I didn't say I wouldn't help." He pulled her back, missing her warmth immediately. "Do you know what your mark looks like? Or do you have a name?"
"I have a picture." She said. Maybe he could help her and she could relax for the evening. If he had even a tiny clue for her it would help. As the song ended he guided her off the dance floor and into the booth she sat in her first night.
After they sat down and had a drink order filled he leaned across the table to her. "Well, do you have a picture of the guy with you?" Emma silently opened her purse and pushed the picture of Neal across the table to him, just as she did two nights before with Ruby. She kept her eyes on him to watch his reaction and avoid looking at the man that betrayed her so completely. A crease appeared between his eyes on his forehead and he swallowed before looking up at her. "Can't say I've seen him." His tongue darted out to wet his lips nervously.
"Really? I thought you came here a lot." Emma countered. She had seen the emotion pass over his face before he cleared it away. "Well if you can't help—" She went to stand up and his hand shot out and grabbed her wrist before she could walk away.
"What is it you want with him?" Killian conceded.
"Closure." She whispered, too low for it to be possible for him to hear over the loud music, but his face softened all the same.
