Chapter Seventeen: The Chunin Exam Finals
The day of the Chunin Exam Finals had finally arrived, and the entire village had gathered inside the stadium along with several high ranking dignitaries and Damiyo's from various countries, all coming to bear witness to the talent that all the candidates would have. In the centre of the arena were the Chunin hopefuls. Naruto, Sasuke, Shino, Kankuro, Temari, Gaara, Shikamaru, and Kiba all stood in the arena, but oddly one person which Sasuke and Naruto noticed was missing and they were looking around. "Where's Daisuke?" Naruto whispered to Sasuke.
"How should I know, I just got here myself. Maybe she slept in," he suggested.
"On a day like this? No way in hell," Naruto hissed back to him.
"Well unless you want to go and look for her and forfeit your match against Kiba, there's nothing you can do about it," Sasuke said casualty, a long suffering tone in his voice.
"Oh no, I'm not letting that dog prove he's better than me because I backed out of this," Naruto growled.
"Hey shut it you two," a voice said, and all of the participants looked at the proctor for the exams, Hayate Gekko, the man who had proctored the preliminaries. He had obvious bandages around his torso.
"What happened to you?" Kiba asked him.
"None of your concern, let's just say I had a run in with a skilled wind style jutsu user," Hayate snapped at him before coughing slightly. "Now then, Lord Hokage has a few words to say before we begin with the finals." He looked up to the Third Hokage who had Jiraiya by his side and was sitting beside the Kazekage. Hayate nodded, and the old man nodded back to him before standing up and walking towards the edge of the box.
"Welcome to the finals of this year's Chunin Exams! Today we shall witness these Genin that stand before you show their skills that they have acquired, and we will see which of these few shall become Chunin!" Sarutobi declared, his voice amplified greatly, and the stadium erupted in thunderous roars. The old man smiled before he sat back down in his chair.
"It seems you still know how to get people excited Lord Third," the Kazekage said to him.
"Indeed, and it looks like all three of your children made it to the finals this time," the Hokage told him.
"Yes, I am intent on witnessing on how far my children have come. I am particularly interested in my son Gaara's fight with the female Uchiha," the Kazekage replied to the Hokage whose face remained neutral. On the inside, both Sarutobi and Jiraiya were visibly confused.
"Odd, from what I've heard the Kazekage has never called Gaara his son, at least not openly," Jiraiya thought to himself.
"Our first match of the Chunin Exam Finals…Kiba Inuzuka and Naruto Uzumaki. All other contestants please make your way to the competitor's box," Hayate told everyone before coughing.
"What happens if someone isn't here on time?" Naruto asked.
"If a participant is not in the arena when their match is called they will be disqualified. Those who are late even to a match of this importance are not fit for the rank above Genin," Hayate told Naruto, and both the blonde and Sasuke gulped slightly in worry for their teammate. Kiba also appeared worried for his friend. "Anyway, are you two ready to fight?" Hayate asked Kiba and Naruto who nodded their heads.
"Naruto, come at me and Akamaru with everything you got, don't hold back because I won't," Kiba said with a feral smirk, and Naruto smiled back.
"I wouldn't expect you to hold back dog breath, time to find out who's the best," he said raising his fist to Kiba who returned the gesture.
"Go!" Hayate declared. He leapt back as Kiba and Akamaru charged at Naruto and Kiba tossed a smoke grenade. It landed at Naruto's feet and engulfed him in smoke.
"Smoke screen?" Naruto thought in surprise before jumping into the air to avoid what he thought was a sneak attack.
"Predictable." Naruto turned to see Kiba kick him in the face and send him crashing down to the ground. Naruto rolled across the ground and saw Kiba and Akamaru standing in front of him.
"How'd you know….?" Naruto started.
"Please Naruto, it's not like I just sat on my ass this whole month. I knew you'd probably jump out of the smoke so I waited for you to jump into the air where you can't dodge," Kiba said, and Naruto rolled his eyes.
"It'll take more than smoke and mirrors to beat me."
"I know that, now I'm gonna get serious," Kiba said, and Akamaru barked in approval.
"SHADOW CLONE JUTSU!" Naruto exclaimed, making his favourite handsign. Four Naruto's appeared beside the original.
"Shadow clones? At a Genin level?" A shinobi observing the fight asked taken aback. "I suppose considering what he is it's not that much of a shock."
"Hey what do you know, that brat is actually pretty talented," Kankuro said slightly impressed.
"Kankuro you saw him use the jutsu in the preliminaries, you shouldn't be so surprised seeing it again," Temari told her brother.
"Shut up, both of you," Gaara's gravelly voice said, making both of them gulp and sweat slightly.
"Of course Gaara," Temari replied looking at her brother whose gaze was focused on Kiba and Naruto who were fighting each other tooth and nail.
"WIND STYLE: AIR BULLETS!" Naruto shouted, firing bullets of air at Kiba and Akamaru who both dodged the compressed air projectiles that hit the ground and left craters.
"FANG OVER FANG!" Kiba shouted as he and Akamaru jumped, spun around, and flew towards Naruto.
"Whoa!" he exclaimed, jumping into the air, but the two drills followed him and Naruto barely avoided his opponents by summoning a shadow clone that threw him away back towards the ground.
"WIND STYLE: GREAT BREAKTHROUGH!" Naruto shouted again, this time a massive gust of air flew towards Kiba and Akamaru just as they landed.
"Nice trick, that won't work like you think it will," Kiba said going through handsigns. "EARTH STYLE: EARTH WALL!" he shouted slamming his palm into the ground and a wall of earth rose up and the wind cracked and pressured the wall, but could not fell it.
"Since when did you know earth style?" Naruto asked.
"Since the month of training I found out I had earth natured chakra," Kiba answered and Akamaru barked in agreement.
"Looks like I'll have to beat Kiba the old fashioned way," Naruto thought to himself as Kiba and Akamaru charged towards Naruto. Kiba tossed a smoke bomb at Naruto and covered him in smoke again while Akamaru jumped into the smoke and the sounds of a fight could be heard. When the smoke cleared up Naruto was seen lying down on the ground with Akamaru standing there proudly.
"Good boy Akamaru, you did it," Kiba said proudly as Akamaru ran towards Kiba who held his arms out, but to his shock Akamaru jumped and bit down on the arm. "Ow! What're you doing!?" Kiba shouted at his partner who growled.
"Surprise." With that taunt, Akamaru was covered in smoke to be replaced by Naruto who was biting down on Kiba's arm.
"A transformation jutsu!" Kiba shouted as he threw Naruto off his arm and the blond spat and cleared his tongue.
"Yeah, and by the way you taste horrible!" he yelled at Kiba who growled at him.
"Why you! Wait, where is Akamaru?" Kiba asked Naruto who smirked and pointed behind him to a clone that held the dog in his hands.
"Right here," the clone said.
"Let him go!" Kiba shouted at the clone.
"Give up and I will," the clone said smirking, and Kiba growled before he gave his own grin.
"So that's how you want to play the game Naruto, fine I'll play along," he said before taking out two pills. He swallowed one of them before tossing the other one to Akamaru who swallowed it and the white puppy started to snarl before bitting the clone's hand making it dispel. Akamaru's fur stood on end and started to turn red.
"Easy boy, good boy," Naruto said nervously.
"Akamaru now!" Kiba shouted at his partner who barked and ran back to Kiba and jumped onto his head. Both of them were engulfed in smoke. "MAN BEAST CLONE!" Kiba shouted, and beside him now stood a more feral looking form of himself with claws and fangs.
"Wait? That's Akamaru?" Naruto asked shocked.
"You bet your ass it is, and now time to finish this fight. NINJA ART BEAST MIMICRY," Kiba shouted as his nails became claws and his toenails also became claw like. Kiba and Akamaru now charged at Naruto on all fours.
"SHADOW CLONE JUTSU!" Naruto shouted as he created twenty copies.
"FANG OVER FANG!" Kiba was heard shouting as he and Akamaru spun around like buzz saws and they destroyed all the clones, creating a cloud of smoke.
"Oh come on!" Naruto groaned as Kiba charged and swiped his claws at him. Naruto ducked and weaved between the claw strikes. "I've about had it with this, time to end this," Naruto said as he performed handsigns and his whole right fist and forearm was covered in a swirling vortex. "WIND STYLE: DRILLING WIND FIST!" Naruto shouted as he punched Kiba in the chest, and the wind around Naruto's fist drilled into Kiba making him scream in pain, though the wind blades cut up Naruto's arm as well to a lesser extent as Kiba was sent spinning like a pinwheel backwards. He crashed into the wall and stayed down while Naruto was breathing heavily.
"The winner of the match is Naruto Uzumaki," Hayate announced and the whole arena cheered as Naruto smiled before he winced in pain and looked down at his arm to see it was covered in cuts and was also bleeding.
"Well done Naruto," Sasuke said.
"An impressive jutsu, but it looks like it caused Naruto some harm as well," Kakashi thought to himself. "Perhaps influenced by the Nadeshiko woman? It is similar to one of her attacks."
"Impressive, seems you didn't waste your time training him doing your research," the Third Hokage said to Jiraiya who nodded his head. "But it looks like he will need medical attention with his injured arm." The old Hokage observed this looking down at Naruto who was holding his injured arm.
"Looks like it, I told the gaki to not to use that jutsu, his chakra control isn't good enough to do that jutsu without causing himself bodily harm," the toad sage said.
"Do you need medical attention kid?" Hayate asked Naruto who was still holding his injured arm.
"I'll be fine, I think," Naruto said wincing. "I heal quickly."
"Very well, the next match is Gaara of the Sand versus Daisuke Uchiha, both these participants make their way down to the arena," Hayate said as Gaara vanished in a swirl of sand and flew down towards the arena floor, but Daisuke did not arrive.
"Daisuke Uchiha come down to the arena," Hayate said.
"Where's Daisuke?" Sasuke asked confused. "She should have been here by now," he thought.
"Don't worry Sasuke, if I know Daisuke she's probably on her way," Kakashi told him.
"Well she better hurry up," Naruto said as he arrived in the competitor's box still holding his arm though thankfully the bleeding was slowly stopping.
"Since Daisuke Uchiha is not here, she is…" Hayate was cut off when a swirl of wind appeared in the centre of the arena making everyone look down curious as Daisuke appeared her hair blowing through the wind and she was now wearing a black battle kimono with the Uchiha Clan symbol on the back of it and her hands had bandages on them and she also wore black ANBU style pants with black ninja sandals.
"I'm not late am I?" Daisuke asked Hayate who looked at her.
"Nearly. While it's extremely unprofessional of you to show up so late, you are just in time for the match. A few seconds later and you would have been disqualified," he told her and Daisuke winced.
"Sorry, I kinda slept in," she said and everyone sweatdropped.
"Whatever, let's being," Gaara said to her, and Daisuke's expression became hardened.
"You're asking for it," she said to the redheaded Sand ninja.
"The next round of the finals between Daisuke Uchiha and Gaara of the Sand will now begin," Hayate said and he jumped back as Gaara's gourd's cork popped out and sand seeped out of the gourd. Daisuke jumped backwards.
"So this is the sand Gaara used to injure Lee," Daisuke thought to herself as the sand swirled around Gaara like a snake. "Let's see how fast it is," she thought before she rushed forwards and went to punch him, but the sand blocked the punch along with consecutive strike from Daisuke no matter what direction it was coming from.
"Is that all you have? I am disappointed," Gaara rasped to Daisuke who frowned. She darted away to gain a little distance.
"WIND STYLE: AIR BULLETS!" she shouted, firing compressed air projectiles at Gaara whose sand rose up and blocked the wind jutsu. "So the sand will even block jutsu no matter the range? This is gonna be difficult," Daisuke mumbled to herself before she saw Gaara raise his hand into the air.
"SAND SHURIKEN!" he roared, swinging his arm and several projectiles made of sand flew towards Daisuke.
"EARTH STYLE: ROCK WALL!" the redheaded Uchiha shouted spitting a stream of mud from her mouth, and a wall of earth rose up from under her and rose fifteen feet into the sky and the sand shuriken flew into the wall dispersed. "FIRE STYLE: GRAND FIREBALL!" Daisuke roared, breathing a huge spherical fireball down at Gaara, but again the sand rose up into the air and blocked the fire jutsu.
"SAND TSUNAMI!" Gaara roared as he lifted his arms and a massive wave of sand shot up from the ground, heading straight towards Daisuke atop the wall of rock.
"FIRE STYLE: GRAND FIREBALL!" Daisuke roared making a handsign and putting three times the amount of chakra into it as before. She took a deep breath and breathed a massive wall of fire at the sand tsunami and the two attacks clashed. In the end the sand turned into glass.
"What?" Gaara asked.
"When sand is superheated it turns into glass. I hope that attack wasn't you best one, otherwise you should quit now before I humiliate you by kicking your butt," Daisuke told him but Gaara chuckled.
"Impressive, this is the power of the Uchiha, and you haven't even activated your Sharingan yet," he said to Daisuke whose face remained neutral.
"I don't need to rely on my Sharingan to defeat the likes of you monster," she growled. Inwardly Daisuke winced. Maybe she was being a little cocky. Yeah, time to activate the Sharingan.
"Monster? You haven't even seen what I can do yet, let me show you the true power of the desert," Gaara rasped holding his hand out, and Daisuke heard cracking and she looked down at the wall she was standing on and she saw the wall crack and sand shot up and hit her making her fall off the wall and the sand grabbed her and slammed her into the wall and then into the ground and Daisuke gasped.
"Daisuke!" Naruto and Sasuke shouted in worry as she got back to her feet.
"Do you see now, I can make the very earth into sand for me to use, your earth style jutsu will offer no more defence from my sand," Gaara told her. Daisuke flashed her Sharingan on.
"I'm not a one trick pony pal, so don't underestimate me!" Daisuke shouted as she weaved through handsigns. "EARTH STYLE: SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT BOULDER JUTSU!" She threw a dozen shuriken towards Gaara at high speed. "SHURIKEN SHADOW CLONE JUTSU!" the shuriken multiplied from a dozen into three dozen and the metal projectiles flew towards Gaara who just stood there.
"SAND SHOWER BARRAGE," he said as his sand threw blobs of sand at the shuriken and stopped all of them in their tracks. Gaara then looked and to his surprise Daisuke was not where she was before. He then heard a rumble and he looked down to see Daisuke shoot out of the ground. She tried to punch him but his sand blocked the blow. Daisuke grinned and her eyes shifted.
"WATATSUMI." She saw the corrosive chakra directing the sand and cancelled it out. To everyone's surprise, the sand around him fell to the ground and she nailed Gaara with an uppercut punch in the jaw and sent him into the air but the sand caught him and cushioned his fall.
Watatsumi, her latest Mangekyo Sharingan technique. The technique allowed her to analyse the chakra composition of the target even more thoroughly than the ordinary Sharingan and by channelling chakra into the technique she could cancel any chakra-based jutsu in her sight, or even remove fuinjutsu off of objects. She did not have to exert an equal amount of chakra to cancel it, but more powerful jutsu did take more chakra to nullify. Also, overusing the technique caused successively greater pain to her eyes. However, one limitation is that a jutsu is only cancelled if it's being maintained by chakra. She could stop a fireball with it, but not a piece of thrown rock.
"Whoa!" Naruto exclaimed.
"Did she just…" Temari started shocked.
"Yeah, she just hit Gaara like that other kid," Kankuro answered her. "But what happened to Gaara's defence? It should have stopped that attack!"
"I don't know what you did to mother, but you are the second one to hit me like that. Now as a reward your death shall be quick and painless. SAND SPEAR!" Gaara shouted, throwing sand that quickly formed into a spear and it impaled Daisuke.
"Daisuke!" Sasuke shouted, but to his relief the Daisuke impaled turned into mud.
"Mud clone," Gaara thought to himself before he turned around and saw Daisuke behind him with a kunai in each hand, and she charged at Gaara whose sand flew towards her. She cut through the sand and got closer to Gaara with each swipe of the kunai. "DESERT CYCLONE!" Gaara roared as a massive tornado of sand surrounded him just when Daisuke jumped at him and the sand blew her away into a tree. She groaned in discomfort.
"How am I going to get through that sand? It keeps stopping all my attacks. Watatsumi isn't something I want to overuse, but I might not have an option." She focused on her eyes, but grimaced when she saw that the tornado was made half of Gaara's chakra and half of that corrosive one. It took over three times as much effort to negate it as normal chakra, no way she was touching a jutsu that used that much of it. She stood up and made a handsign and two clones mad of stone appeared beside her. "Ready?" she asked and they both nodded. "You do the wind, you do the fire, and I will do the mud," she told them and they smiled. This would use up almost all of her remaining chakra, but if she ever wanted to reach Gaara she didn't have much of a choice.
"COLLABORATION: FLAMING MUD SLIDE!" Daisuke and her two clones shouted as one clone blew a stream of fire, the other a vortex of wind and Daisuke spat a river of mud and the three jutsu combined to form a flaming mud slide that smashed into the tornado of sand that was protecting Gaara.
"Holy! Who taught her during the month?" Naruto asked.
"I did, well a shadow clone of mine did," Kakashi told him and Sasuke who both looked at him and then at the arena below where they saw the tornado of sand struggle to stay strong against the fiery mudslide.
"Impressive collaboration jutsu, a rare thing to achieve for a Genin or any ninja, don't you agree Lord Hokage?" the Kazekage asked.
"Indeed, a true prodigy of the Uchiha clan," Sarutobi answered. Gaara frowned as he struggled to maintain the sandstorm.
"How is she doing this? She's weak, she fights for others. Fighting for one's self gives you power!" Gaara thought furiously as he roared and the sandstorm exploded, blowing the flaming mud everywhere covering the field.
"Oh come on, that was my best jutsu," Daisuke thought to herself before she panted slightly. "And the most exhausting on my chakra reserves, thankfully training with Kakashi-sensei increased my chakra reserves but I'm running dry," she thought before smirking. "Though I do have a temporarily work around." Daisuke reached into her side pouch and pulled out a soldier pill before taking it and feeling her chakra flare up to perhaps around half of her maximum.
"Is that all the mighty Uchiha has to offer, I am disappointed," Gaara gravelly said to her with a manic grin on his face.
"No it isn't, I still have more left!" Daisuke said with determination.
"Show him Daisuke!" Sasuke shouted which made several people looked at the Uchiha who blushed in embarrassment becoming stoic again.
"On it!" Daisuke shouted back as she bit her thumb and she went through handsigns. "SUMMONING JUTSU!" she slammed her palm onto the ground and Raiden appeared by her side.
"What do you need pup?" He asked her.
"We're going to plan B," she told him and the wolf's eyes widened before he nodded.
"Got it, say the word," He told her and Daisuke took out two kunai and held them in her hands.
"Now!" she shouted as both she and her wolf summon charged towards Gaara.
"SAND SHURIKEN!" the redhead shouted throwing more sand shuriken towards Daisuke and Raiden who both jumped into the air and Gaara looked up at them. "SAND SPEARS!" Spears of sand flew up and impaled Daisuke and the wolf before both burst into mud.
Suddenly the earth near Gaara was disturbed and the wolf's head burst out of the sand and sunk his teeth into Gaara's leg. Even as Gaara's eyes widened in disbelief, Daisuke also popped out of the earth. "WATASUMI!" she shouted, once again stopping the sand shield from rising before she hurled a punch that knocked Gaara backwards, only to be stopped by the wolf's grip. She smashed Gaara two more times in the face before the wolf twisted his head and hurled Gaara into the arena wall, though the sand gourd cushioned the impact. Daisuke and the wolf climbed out of the earth completely.
"Interesting, interesting! Not bad Daisuke Uchiha!" Gaara roared manically as he got back to his feet and grinned at Daisuke.
"Raiden get out of here, this is getting dangerous and I don't want you to get hurt," Daisuke told the wolf who looked at her and nodded before vanishing in a cloud of smoke. Unfortunately for Daisuke, that momentary lapse of focus allowed Gaara to take the advantage and encase her in the sand that had been by her feet and raise her into the air.
"No!" Naruto, Kiba and Sasuke shouted in worry. Daisuke's eyes widened as she tried to activate Watatsumi but panic slowed her execution as Watatsumi took a great deal of concentration to use effectively.
"Die, SAND COFFIN!" Gaara shouted clenching his fist, and the sand imploded and Daisuke dropped down to the ground. "It's over, end the match," Gaara said as everyone was silent. The silence was broken when Daisuke shakily got to her feet. "What is this?" Gaara asked confused as Daisuke looked up and down at her body.
"How? I should be hurt or dead," Daisuke asked herself. As it to answer her an ethereal ribcage of golden colour surrounded her. "What is this?" she thought to herself before she felt a small tingle in her eyes. "Is this another power of the Mangekyo?" she asked herself as everyone else watched on. "Time to finish this fight," she said crouching and small ripples emanated from her feet before she shot into the air like a cannon and she hovered high in the sky.
"She can fly!?" Naruto exclaimed.
"That's new," Sasuke admitted.
"She studied the principles of flight over the month of training, and discovered by combining her wind chakra and earth chakra she can make herself light enough to fly but can't carry other people yet," Kakashi said and the other two members of team seven looked at their sensei and nodded in understanding.
"Okay, I need to finish this fight now," Daisuke thought as she weaved through handsigns. "EARTH STYLE: ROCK FIST!" she exclaimed, holding her fist out and rocks flew up from the ground and covered her it. "EARTH STYLE: SUPER WWEIGHTED BOULDER JUTSU!" Daisuke then felt her weight increase exponentially and she hurdled down towards Gaara and threw her fist at him. He raised his sand to try and block it but Daisuke tore through the sand and cracked Gaara in the face. He crashed into the ground, creating a large crater in which Garra's gourd was destroyed and Gaara was laying down. Daisuke then collapsed exhausted.
"The match is over, the winner is Daisuke Uchiha," Hayate announced and the arena went wild.
"Way to go Daisuke! You rock!" Naruto cheered.
"Nice work!" Sasuke exclaimed.
"Wahoo!" Kiba shouted as Akamaru barked happily but suddenly maniacal laughter rang out and sand swirled around from where Gaara was.
"This is not over! I will not lose my existence!" With that a massive pillar of sand shot up and Gaara emerged with his body half covered in sand and one of his hands had been transformed into a claw. A tail of sand covered in markings was also on Gaara's body and half of Gaara's face was covered and now looked like a Tanuki.
"Lord Kazekage!" the Third Hokage exclaimed in shock as the Kazekage looked at him before he gave a signal. An explosion occurred in the Kage box and everyone looked up at it in shock. If that wasn't enough several more explosions occurred throughout the village.
"Now Daisuke Uchiha, this is your end, you may have won the match but I will be the only one alive at the end of this day!" Gaara roared at Daisuke who looked at him in worry.
