Chapter 16:
Kate knew that she had a secret, but she couldn't keep it from me much longer, especially if it would hurt me in the end. She was still my best friend, and she needed to come clean. Kate drove over to my apartment in a panic, that she nearly didn't way attention to the traffic laws. Kate was relieved when she saw a light on through my window. She took a deep breath, firmly grasped a large manilla envelope, and made he way up to my door.
'knock, knock knock' She heard footsteps coming closer to the door, but when the door opened she gasped seeing Stu, instead of her best friend. She was confused, and a bunch of scenario's ran through her head at once.
"You're not Jamie!" She chuckled, and Stu stood aside, letting her in.
"No, she picked up an extra shift at work tonight." Kate still looked confused, as she walked past the man she was not expecting to see standing in my hallway. "A bunch of the regular nurses called in sick, so she's covering" She nodded in understanding now.
"So not to sound blunt or anything, but what are you doing here?" She had a smirk on her face. She knew that there had to be some thing going on between us, even though I kept telling her we were just friends.
"I am on a break from work, because of an injury, so I came here to help prepare Jamie for her big date with Randy on Friday." Kate nodded, but it looked like she wanted to say more.
"When did you get here?" She walked into my kitchen helping herself to a beer from the fridge. Stu watched her with intent. He felt like he was being questioned in front of a jury, and she was actually making him nervous.
"Last night" He said as he too grabbed a beer. They both sat down at the kitchen table, and stared at each other.
"...And you're staying?"
"Jamie is letting me stay here!" He said proudly. This made Kate's smirk grow.
"Hmm..." She just replied taking a sip of her beer, and smiling at Stu, making him feel a bit un easy.
"What?"
"Oh, nothing... it's just Jamie swears up and down that you two are just friends, even though its obvious she has feelings for you, and then here you are showing up at her place, staying with her..." She paused staring right at him, trying to read him like she can read me.
"We are just friends" He replied too quickly taking a long sip of his beer.
"Liar!" She stared him down.
"Excuse me!?" He chuckled at her accusation, knowing full well he may not be able to hide his feelings for me, from my best friend. "What makes you think I am a liar?"
"Admit it, you like her! It is written all over both of your faces!" He didn't respond just took a sip of his beer again. "I'm right aren't I!" Kate was getting too excited, waiting for him to admit it.
"Alright … fine... yes! I do have feelings for her, but to her I'm just her friend... so that's where you are wrong!" He looked really hurt, and angry at his admission. He had never said that out loud, just in his head. "She likes Randy, and that is who she is supposed to end up with. He's her prince charming, or what ever , not me!" She looked at him ,and started to laugh. " Oh I'm glad you find this amusing!"
"I'm sorry, but do you realize just how silly you sound?"
"What?"
"You really are an idiot... just tell Jamie how you feel."
"No!"
"Stubborn!"
"Yep, That's me!" He finished off his beer, grabbing a new one from the fridge.
"Why wont you tell her?" he sighed, looking down at his beer ,and then back at her.
"Because Sweetheart, things don't ever turn out in my favor. That's why." It looked like Kate wasn't going to accept that answer.
"Why do you say that?"
"Because" He sounded annoyed, though he really wasn't,he just didn't feel comfortable spilling his guts. "She has admitted to me from day one, that she wants Orton, he is the guy of her dreams, or what ever." He mumbled. "She wont feel the same way, I know!"
"Yes, ok I admit Jamie has had at the biggest crush on him, but she doesn't know him like she knows you, and she is more herself around you, you have to know that ,and that has to mean some thing!" Kate persisted. "Stu, she is living this fairy tale in he head, that she wont see what is infront of her face. I've been here with her before!"
"What... with her ex?" Kate was surprised that I even talked about him with Stu.
"She told you everything about Pete?"
"I got bits and pieces, out of her when she was drunk, and a bit more earlier today." It was Kate's turn to be surprised again.
"I'm sorry, are we talking about Jamie... Jamie Boggs? She doesn't get drunk, she barely finishes one lite beer!" Kate giggled knowing there was more to the Story. "Spill Bennett!"
"I thought she might need a bit of liquid courage to get over her fears, and have a good time with Randy, with out worry. I just needed her to open up a bit."
"Did it work?" He sighed.
"A little, from what I gather, her Ex is real Wanker! I really feel for her, I wish she knew what it was like for some one to treat her the way she deserved to be treated." He took a sip of Beer. Kate could see how sincere he was as he spoke. She really could tell how he cared about me. "If I ever cross paths with him, I'll kill him!" Now it was Kate's turn to feel awful, and un easy. She took a big sip of her bottle , polishing it off, and grabbing her second from the fridge. No one will like her very much for the secret she is hiding, but she couldn't say anything, not just yet.
"Well, you got that right, Pete never treated her with love, and I tried to tell her everyday how he was, but she just stuck up for him, standing by his side..." She scoffed. "Like and idiot!"
"So... she left him on her own?" Kate looked into his eyes, and she knew I never talked about why she left, and knew there was no way she told Stu, but she figured he had to know.
"She did leave him, but did she tell you why, and what it took for her to finally do that?" he shook his head. "Pete was a lying, abusive, and controlling son of a bitch. HE had her wrapped so tightly around his finger, it was sick. He treated her like garbage and she refused to see it, she only saw what she wanted to see. He would always forget about her, and ignore her, and when they did make plans, he would forget, or cancel making some lame excuse, that only she would believe." She paused. "It was the eve of there wedding anniversary, and she was sure he would come home, she had made his favorite meal, by candle light, and bought a sexy little black outfit. That she wore under her clothes to surprise him with later. She waited with high hopes, constantly checking her phone and watch, but heard nothing from him, hours after he was to be done. She got a call from her elderly neighbor up the street, about coming over to help her clean up some broken glass. She figured why not make some use of her time, since he wasn't home yet. So She went over to help out her neighbor, and came back with in the hour. She checked her phone again, and still no message thinking that perhaps she would call him when she got back inside." Kate paused again, but his time looked like she was going to cry. "She returned to find the door unlocked, which was weird because she always locked it, even if she was just going up the street. She pushed the door open thinking that Pete must have came home ,and just forgot to lock it ,being too tired from work. She called out his name, but there was no answer from her husband, just loud noises, coming from her bedroom. She slowly walked into her bedroom to find that in fact Pete did come home, he was in bed on top of a skanky blonde bimbo he had brought home from a bar, because he reeked of alcohol. Jamie was so stunned and speechless she just stood there staring at her husband, the man she loved and trusted make love to some one else In there own bed. By the time he noticed she was watching he got angry. He came charging after Jamie, crashing her hard against the wall, wrapping his arms around her neck, trying to choke her. HE would have killed her that night, if it wasn't for me. I was coming over to borrow a few movies from Jamie, when I heard loud screams, and noises, so I ran in and pulled him off of her , and got her the hell out of there, she never looked back."
Stu listened with intent, and he now had even more hatred for the man. He wanted to hunt him down and kill him for what he did. He literally could not understand why any one would want to throw my love away like that. Stu sat quietly not saying another word.
"I think I understand why she is so broken" Kate nodded.
"She doesn't know how to trust, but she trusts you, she trusts you Stu. Don't you get it?" Kate was trying to make him understand.
"She trusts you!" He retorted
"That's different, I've known her, her whole life. She took to you, almost instantly."
"She wont love me Kate, so just drop it!"
"Ok, but... you won't let anything happen to her?" Stu was taken a back by her question, of course he wouldn't let anything happen to her, he cared about her too much.
"Why would you ask me that?" He thought she was talking about Randy.
"I came here to talk to Jamie, well to warm her actually... but it's all my fault she might be in danger!"
"Kate... Kate... slow down, I don't understand. What are you talking about?" He grabbed her hand to reassure her. She looked up at Stu with fear in her eyes.
"Pete... he knows where Jamie is, and he's coming here to find her" Stu was now seeing red , at her confession, and Kate was now fearful, for everyone.
