Chapter 3: Only Human

BPOV

I stared in shock at Alice and Jasper. They looked utterly and completely. . .normal. Was that even the right word to describe them?

They both looked the same, their facial features hadn't changed. They were still slightly pale, but they had definitely matured into adults since the last time I laid eyes on them. And they looked utterly soft and natural, unlike their usual statuesque features.

Jasper looked much less like a teenager and much more like a fully grown, matured man. His hair was tousled stylishly on his head, and he was also sporting a 5'o clock shadow that made him look even older. It was even dark brown now. He was wearing a fitted tan blazer and some dark jeans with his trademark cowboy boots. His glittering grey eyes smiled at me warmly and I did a double take as I looked into them. Then I took a deep breath and looked at Alice.

She, of course, looked older as well. She didn't look like the young impish girl who had pranced around me on her visits when I had been at Yale. No, she looked like a woman, a petite woman. Her hair was out of its usual spikes and was combed back attractively. Her light green eyes danced as her body could not. She was wearing heels and she looked splendid in a body hugging black dress.

She squealed when she caught sight of me and ran up to hug me. I didn't hesitate to catch her in my arms, but when I hugged her, she was warm and soft. She smelled of something citrus-like, but nothing more. She wasn't cold and hard as marble as I'd known her to be and for some reason I hugged her tighter over this realization. Could what I was thinking possibly be real?

I pulled back and held her warm, small hands in mine. She beamed up at me and then smiled at Jacob, who was frozen with a shocked expression on his face. I rolled my eyes at him before I spoke.

"Alice. . .what-"

She cut me off and shook her head. "Let's get our luggage and we'll talk about it in the car." Her face lit up with a smile as I nodded deftly and followed her and Jasper to the luggage rack. I had to grab Jacob's hand and drag him behind me because he was still frozen in shock.

As I followed Alice and Jasper, I watched them silently. What did this mean? Alice had looked and felt human; could she possibly be human now? No, that was impossible. There was no conceivable way for a vampire to just change back to being human, there was not.

Alice and Jasper both grabbed their bags and turned to us. Alice smiled.

"Alright, let's go," she said. We walked to my car, but right before we got there, Jacob unfroze.

"Is this some kind of joke? Are we being punk'd?" he asked with a serious look on his face. Jasper laughed and shook his head.

"No, Jacob, you're not being punk'd. As Alice said, we'll explain in the car. It is quite a long story," he said. I glanced at him, surprised. His usually baritone voice sounded as low as I remembered it, but it was noticeably ordinary. No tinkle of glass or whisper of wind conveyed itself through it at all. Jacob seemed even more confused at this.

I didn't say anything as we got to the car. Jasper and Jacob packed the trunk and then got in. Jacob took the front seat because he was the tallest and Jasper and Alice sat in the back.

I fixed my mirrors so that I would be able to see out the back, but would also be able to see Alice and Jasper's expressions if I chose to look at them. I could see that Alice was looking around the car, examining it as Jacob had. I smiled to myself.

"This is nice," she said, saying the exact same thing as Jacob had. At this, Jacob turned in his seat and looked at Alice.

"Okay, spill. We're in the car so you have to explain why you look and smell-"

"Human?" Alice provided. Jacob bobbed his head vigorously. Alice looked at Jasper.

"Well, the short answer to that question is that your senses are not playing tricks on you. We are human," Jasper said. There was complete silence in the car before Jacob broke it.

"Bullshit."

"Jake!" I exclaimed. He shrugged as Jasper chuckled.

"No, Bella, he's right to think that. I'd be on exactly the same page as him if I hadn't experienced it first hand," he said. I frowned, my brow furrowing.

"Well give us the long version of the story please. We won't really understand until then," I said. Alice nodded and relayed the whole story of the shooting star Melody, how Edward had made the wish for the whole family to be human, and how it had been granted because of Edward's self control concerning me.

"So, in a way, Bella, we have you to thank," Alice said. I shook my head at her. All her talking about Edward had caused the hole in my chest to open up and begin to ache.

"It was just luck. I didn't do anything. It was all Edward," I said. I could see from my peripheral vision that Jacob was watching me. I clutched the steering wheel tighter so as I wouldn't wrap my arm around myself.

"So you guys are no longer bloodsuckers?" Jacob asked. Alice shook her head.

"Nope. Sorry, dog," she said.

Jacob pouted. "Aww, now I can't call you bloodsucker because it would just be mean now," he said.

Alice laughed and shook her head. "No it wouldn't. It's okay, you still have permission to call me bloodsucker," she said with a grin. He clapped his hands and turned in his seat, a smile plastered on his face. I rolled my eyes and pulled into the Olympic Lodge.

Alice sighed as we got out of the car. I walked over to her and put my arm around her shoulder.

"Alice, what's wrong?" I asked.

"Well, I really wish we could stay with you in Forks. But I know your fiancé is coming and there won't be room for me. And we'd stay in the old house but it's completely empty, we'd be sleeping on hard wood floors."

I smiled at her as we walked into the hotel. Jasper moved to Alice's right side and took her hand. Jacob, who was carrying Alice's bag, was on my left side.

"Oh! I've never heard about this fiancé of yours, Bella. Tell me about him," Jasper said. I smirked as we got up to the front desk.

"Hold on. The reservation is under Cullen," I said to the young man standing there. He smiled politely before he typed it into the computer in front of him. He nodded, reached under the desk, and pulled out two key cards.

"Enjoy your stay," he said as Jasper took them.

"Thank you," Jasper replied, turning to me. "Now, continue." I nodded and began to walk with them toward the elevator that would take us to their room.

"Well his name is Andrew Hunter and I met him at Yale in first year, second semester. We were in the same law class. I was taking it as an elective while he was taking it as part of his major; he's hoping to become a lawyer.

"Anyway, we were the two top students and it was kind of like a competition between us. It eventually got to the point where we were always trying to outdo each other. Finally for one of our assignments, our teacher paired us up. And even though we had detested each other, we knew we had to work together to get the project done.

"And in that time we got to know each other and grew to actually be really great friends. But slowly, over time, our friendship became much more than just a friendship and the rest is history."

Jasper was smiling and Alice gasped. We had, by this time, reached Alice and Jasper's suite. It was large and open, with a quaint sitting room that contained a TV. One door led off into the large bedroom which led to its walk-in closet.

I looked at Alice in confusion as she grabbed my left hand to look at the ring. She stared at it and nodded at me.

"It's so beautiful, Bella. Andy has great taste," she said as she let go of my hand. I grinned a bit.

"I do like it," I said while staring at it. Jacob, who was sitting across from us, glanced at the clock.

"Hey, guys, we should probably cut the chit chat and decide which restaurant we want to go to. The others will be driving down there to meet up with us," he said. I nodded, turning to Alice.

"So where do you guys want to eat?" I asked.

Alice thought for a moment and then answered. "Well I read online that the best restaurant in Port Angeles is Wildfire and-" Alice started but was interrupted by Jacob.

"Oh my gosh, that is the best restaurant. The steaks there are to . . .die . . .or. . .oops," Jacob said as he caught sight of my glare. Alice and Jasper were laughing.

"I guess we're going to the Wildfire," Alice said.

"Alright. It's settled!" Jacob rubbed his hands together. He was basically drooling.

Alice stood and flicked Jacob playfully in the head. "Let me just freshen up and then we'll get going," she said. She skipped off just as Jacob's hand whipped out to flick her back.

I pulled out my phone and texted Angela the information about the restaurant. I saw Jacob do the same to Leah. I got a quick reply back from her.

Ok. We'll definitely meet u guys there. We're on the road & we'll be in P.A in 5 mins. Can't wait to see everyone.

I smiled at the text and shut my phone.

When we had finished that, Alice came back in some jeans and a nice, snug, long-sleeved top with some jewelry to glam up her outfit. I smiled at her while I stood up.

"Let's go," I said. We all left the suite and went back out to the car. I knew where the Wildfire was since Jacob had taken me there on a date once a long time ago.

"The others are going to be meeting us at the restaurant. I'm pretty certain Leah is going to be there as well," I said as we drove down the quiet streets of Port Angeles. I saw Jacob nodding in my peripheral vision.

"I'm really going to enjoy this, especially now that I can actually eat," she said with a grin. I smiled as I pulled in. I could see Angela's car and the Rabbit parked beside it. I pulled up in the spot beside the Rabbit and got out.

I heard squeals as Mia, Jhone, Angela, and Hyacinth caught Alice in a hug. I saw Leah in the back shaking her head with a smirk. I smiled and got out of the car to meet my friends.

EPOV

I sat on the plane, trying my best to relax. My body felt completely drained from having to take one of the longest flights to Forks. The space of time between the connecting flights was time enough for me to book a hotel to sleep in.

I was glad that I was nearly there now and that I was in first class. There were only five other passengers with me in first class: an elderly couple, a middle-aged woman, and two young men who were, judging by their clothes and looks, the same age as me.

One was about 6 feet tall, with dark hair that was cut in a stylish buzz cut. He was wearing a simple white-collared shirt with grey dress pants. He had large, blue-green eyes that shone brightly out of his face. They were the most noticeable thing about him, almost the center of gravity in his facial features, yet his strong cheek bones and defined jaw made him look quite rugged. His eyes softened his face, creating a strange tenderness in his features.

His companion on the other hand was quite different. He was about the same height, with blond hair and hazel eyes. He had a face like a boy with one dimple in his left cheek. His face was one that would attract many girls because he was 'baby cute'. But his attitude and disposition were different then his friend. His expression was almost cocky as he surveyed his surroundings. He had an air of higher status around him, and his look made you think he thought he was God's gift to women. He had his hair slicked back and was wearing a leather jacket with some washed out jeans.

The only reason that I had even paid this much attention to their appearances was because the blonde one was being annoyingly loud. He kept laughing loudly at whatever he was watching on his laptop. His friend was trying to quiet him down but it wasn't working. So eventually he had put on some earplugs and had fallen asleep. I scowled at the young man and then decided to follow his friend's example.

When I woke up, it was morning and the stewardess was telling me to fasten my seatbelt because we would be landing in five minutes.

I did as I was told, but I was jittery. I didn't know how I would orchestrate this. I didn't want to just go to her house and say hello. I had to do this slowly. She probably knew about me being human from Alice and Jasper's arrival the day before. I wondered if she thought about me when Alice had told her.

As we descended, my heart rate began to accelerate. It was a strange feeling to have my heart thudding in my ears in fear. When I had been afraid before, there had not been this incessant thumping sound just silence.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, we landed and we exited the plane. I took a deep breath as I grabbed my carry-a-long and left the plane. I was now only a city away from my Bella.

My eyes involuntarily followed the two men who had been on the plane with me. I watched as they went to get their luggage and I followed, spotting my bag right away and picking it up.

When I turned back around, they were both standing with their luggage in hand, looking around. I was close enough to hear the dark haired one say to his friend, "Do you see her?" The blonde one shook his head as they continued to search the hubbub of people.

"Andy!" I heard a voice shout. I turned instinctively toward it because it sounded like Bella. . .my Bella. The dark-haired man turned his head toward it too and I saw a large smile pull across his face.

He dropped his bags and ran toward the voice. I saw his friend's incredulous look as he was left with all the luggage. I turned to see who he was running to and my heart stopped as I caught sight of the girl who'd called his name. It was Bella.

She was still as beautiful as I remembered, but she had matured into a gorgeous young woman. Her hair was still curly, but it was cut in a very becoming stylish bob. Her deep chocolate eyes still sparkled with life and her looks had only been enhanced with age.

Her body was still slim and curvaceous as I remembered, but she was wearing some close-fitting knee high capris with a tank top and flats. She looked more beautiful then she had ever looked in my daydreams.

She had a large smile on her face and it seemed like she was smiling at me, but I was wrong. The dark haired man ran toward her and she opened her arms for him, jumping up into them and wrapping her arms and legs around him like a monkey. He held onto her and it seemed like a reunion for them.

I could feel my heart slowly shatter as I watched. Maybe they were just friends. . .really good friends, I thought. But as I watched him hold her and the tears in her eyes as she pulled back so she could look at him, I knew it was more than friendship between them. Then I saw the worst thing I could ever see in my life. Bella clutched his face in her hands and kissed him.

I felt my heart completely shatter into a million pieces as I watched their passionate exchange. He squeezed her tightly against him as he kissed her. She was still clinging to him as they kissed and from here I could see something glittering on Bella's left hand, on her ring finger.

Oh God, I thought as I fell to my knees. The pain was ripping through me. The hole that had been ripped into my chest after I had left Bella, all of that pain, came rushing back. Over the years, I kept the pain at bay, but now, seeing that she had forgotten me, I couldn't. My words from that day came rushing back to me in startling clarity. Her face, a mask of confusion and pain.

"Don't worry. You're human. Your memory is no more than a sieve. Time heals all wounds for your kind."

"And your memories?" she asked, her voice small and broken, like she was choking.

"Well" I hesitated, "I won't forget, but my kind. . .we're very easily distracted."

I had left that day feeling less than dead. I had been in intolerable pain. My chest had felt like it was ripping apart as I ran. I struggled to catch my breath even though I didn't need to. I fell and stumbled many times and, when I had finally reached the car that I had waiting for me, I couldn't drive it. I just sat in the car, dry sobbing, the pain overwhelming me and every part of my being pulling me back to Bella.

But now it seemed I had been right. Why had I been right? I asked myself. I was still on my knees and I put a hand to my chest so that I would be able to look at them again.

The friend had joined them now and Bella had hugged him in greeting. She knew them. She had a whole new life that didn't involve me. This is why Alice had told me to not come, not to interfere. She knew that Bella was happy and in love with someone else.

I took a deep breath and stood up so that I could watch them go. I stood there as Bella walked out hand-in-hand with the dark-haired man and the blonde friend by his side. I stood there, watching as I tried to gather my wits about me. But I was only human, a pathetic, broken-hearted human.
