Chapter 4: A Glimpse
EPOV
Someone stood over me and put their hand on my shoulder. I looked up to see that it was one of the airport attendants. He looked down at me with concern.
"Are you alright, son?"
I just stared at him for a moment before I blinked and nodded. I was finally able to drag my body up and out of the airport with my luggage. When I stepped out into the evening light of Port Angeles, I took a deep breath.
I took out my cell phone and dialed Alice's number. I hoped beyond anything that she wasn't sleeping. Now that she was human that could be a possibility. But luckily enough she wasn't. She answered her phone quickly.
"What is it, Edward?" she asked.
"Where are you staying?" I walked over to a cab as I spoke. The driver nodded toward me and I handed him my suitcase. He moved over and put it in the trunk as I got in.
"What? Why do you ask?"
I pursed my lips as the driver got in and looked at me expectantly.
"Just tell me already, Alice," I exclaimed, exasperated by her reluctance. I heard her hesitate, my mind's eye seeing her pacing around the room, fighting with herself over telling me where she was. Then she sighed.
"I'm at the Olympic Lodge in Port Angeles." The defeat dripped in her voice almost literally.
"Alright. I'll be there soon."
I hung up, not patient enough to even wait to hear her reply. I told the driver the place and leaned back. He immediately knew where the hotel was and took me there.
I stared out the window as we drove, not really absorbing my surroundings. I could hear that the driver of the taxi was playing some jazz on the stereo but I didn't really want to hear it. I was just too preoccupied with my own thoughts.
Bella had grown up. She was a woman now, a woman in love by the looks of it. My heart constricted painfully and I took deep, gasping breaths so I could handle it. Even just the thought of Bella with someone else was enough to make me become catatonic.
I quietly caught my breath and shut my eyes. In all of my planning to come to Forks to get Bella back, I hadn't thought of the possibility that she would be with someone else. I had deluded myself into thinking that she would have missed me as much as I missed her and would not have moved on. That she would have been alone like I had been since the moment I had left her.
I felt the taxi slow down and stop and I opened my eyes. The driver had parked in front of a very nice looking hotel. He turned toward me.
"That'll be $20.50," he barked. I pulled my wallet out of my pocket and handed the man $30.
"No change," I said. He smiled and got out to help me with my bag. I opened the door and I looked up to see Jasper and Alice coming toward me. Alice looked shocked and angry at the same time while Jasper just looked concerned. Obviously they'd both known about Bella but had thought it best to keep it from me.
Alice was first to reach me and she looked up at me with her arms crossed. She was looking at me with daggers in her eyes, but then something changed in her expression. Maybe she could see how distressed I was.
She uncrossed her arms and she frowned slightly at me, concerned. By now, Jasper had reached us and he had taken my suitcase from the taxi driver.
"Edward. . .what happened?" Alice asked. I wanted to answer her, but it felt like something was blocking my throat.
I felt Jasper clasp my shoulder and I turned to look at him. As I stared at him, I felt like he still had his ability to feel emotions because I didn't say anything, but he gave my shoulder an encouraging squeeze.
"C'mon Edward. Let's go up to the room and you can tell us what happened."
His voice was so soothing that I nodded and leaned against him as we went up to his and Alice's room.
I collapsed into the first seat that I caught sight of as I entered the room. I didn't really take in my surroundings; I was too distraught. At this point, Alice came and sat beside me while Jasper sat in a recliner across from me.
"Edward, tell us what happened. What are you even doing here?" she asked in a quiet voice.
"I didn't want to listen to you," I replied, hoping that she'd understand. I saw from the corner of my eye, Alice and Jasper glance at each other.
"What do you mean?" Jasper asked. I sighed, really not wanting to say it out loud because saying it would make me relive it, and reliving it was too painful. But I needed them to understand and this was the only way that I could get them to.
"I didn't listen to Alice when she said not to come to Forks. I thought that now that I was human, I could be with Bella, but I was so wrong. . .so completely wrong."
I saw Alice look at Jasper again, but this time she moved to stand in front of me.
"Exactly what makes you think that, Edward?"
I stared up at her in disbelief. Even after everything, she still wouldn't say a word until I said it first.
"Oh, Alice, don't play so innocent. I know you knew about her and her boyfriend. . .fiancé. . .whatever he is to her. I saw them at the airport. He was on the same flight as me and when he got off she was there waiting for him. . .jumped into his arms as soon as she saw him. . ." I stopped because I was struggling to catch my breath again.
"Shit. You saw them? You actually saw them?" Alice asked, eyes wide.
"Yes, he and his friend were on my flight as I said."
"Man, that must have been difficult," Jasper said. I looked at him and kept my mouth shut. Alice sighed and began to pace in front of me.
"This is why I didn't want you to come back here. Bella's living her life and now that you can live yours, you should too."
"How can I? She is my life!" What an absurd idea. How could I get over my Bella?
Alice shook her head at me and kneeled in front of me so that we were eye to eye. She placed her hand on my shoulder.
"The horrible truth of the matter is that you aren't Bella's life. She's built one around herself and it was very hard for her to do that, but she did. It would be devastating to come in now and destroy what she created for herself. And I think the best thing for both of you, would be for you to go home."
I stared at her and didn't have the energy to argue with her. She had a point. But the idea of it angered me and I didn't want to listen. In my mind, I had no intention of leaving just yet. I needed more than just a glimpse of Bella.
"Alice is right. That's probably best," Jasper agreed.
Alice stood up and walked out of the room. She came back with a laptop in her hands and she sat down beside me again.
"I'll order you a plane ticket for tomorrow," she said while rubbing my shoulder.
"Things will be better tomorrow, Edward," Jasper said. I nodded and then stood up.
"I think I just want to get some sleep. I feel almost dead."
Jasper nodded and stood up too. He led me into a second bedroom where he had brought my suitcase. He smiled at me and then left me alone in the room.
I quickly fell onto the bed and as soon as my head touched the pillow, I fell asleep.

I watched as Sebastian packed the trunk. I had Andy's arms around me and I was completely relaxed there. I felt like the weight that had been on my chest was gone. Since being away from Andy, I had felt anxious and like I couldn't breathe. It usually came on at night when I was alone, but now that he was here, near me, I felt fine.
Sebastian grumbled as he looked over at me and Andy standing together.
"Why am I doing all the work? Can't you help a little, Andy?" Sebastian asked as he lifted the last suitcase into the trunk.
"Nope, and anyway you're finished. I can't help now, can I?" he asked with a grin. Sebastian shook his head, not amused.
"If I knock them all down, then you'll have a lot to do," he said sarcastically. I laughed at that and pulled out of Andy's arms. I patted Sebastian's hand.
"Oh, don't worry. I'll make sure he unloads everything, alright?" Sebastian smiled angelically.
"Good."
He shut the trunk and made his way into the car. Andy grinned at me.
"Hey. . .why did you give me up to him like that?" I shrugged.
"Sometimes you have to play that way to survive."
I turned and got into the driver's seat. He shrugged in agreement as he got into the front seat. Sebastian leaned forward and looked at me expectantly. I glanced at him in confusion as I backed out.
"What?" He smiled.
"You know what. Are we going to see my girl?" he asked. I chuckled to myself.
"Yes, they'll be waiting for us at the house."
Sebastian grinned even larger and leaned back in his seat, his hands cradling his head. I glanced at him in my rear-view mirror.
"Hey, my dad's a cop, so you should know that I enforce seat belt use. So you better put yours on."
He rolled his eyes, but did as I said. Andy glanced and smiled at me. I smiled back and turned on the radio so we'd have something to fill the silence in the car.
Finally I pulled into my driveway and saw my front door open as I turned off the car and got out. Sebastian was out of his seat and across the lawn faster then I was able to follow. I heard a squeal and Hyacinth ran out of the house and jumped into his arms.
I smiled to myself, thinking how similar their greeting had been to mine and Andy's. I walked to the back of the car and opened the trunk, beginning to haul out their heavy bags when Andy came up beside me.
"Let me help. You did say I would have to unpack," he said with a grin. I smiled back at him and together we got the trunk emptied and pulled their luggage to the front door.
We went inside as everyone converged on us, hugging Andy and Sebastian as we went. I dropped the bags at the front door, so later they could take it upstairs, and followed them into the living room.
"So how was your flight, you two?" Angela asked. I squished myself in-between Sebastian and Andy so I could sit beside them.
"Great, only Seb here was making a ruckus on the plane. Probably bugged everyone who was trying to relax," Andy replied with a grin. Sebastian looked appalled at Andrew's words and we all began to laugh.
"You two are too much. I'm so glad we're all together again," Mia said.
"Yes, I'm definitely glad about that," Hyacinth replied. Sebastian looked at her and winked. She giggled and I felt Andy take my hand as we sat there.
Sitting like this, with all of us, reminded me of my time at Yale with everyone. It brought back fond and warm memories for me as we sat there. But I also knew that both these guys were probably hungry so I stood up and looked down at them.
"Who's hungry?"

I slept unnaturally, my dreams being plagued with Bella first telling me that she had forgotten me and then watching her walk down the aisle and saying 'I do' to her dark-haired fiancé.
I woke up a few times with a cold sweat on my brow and before the sun had barely risen, I had gotten up and taken a long shower to clear my head. I was going insane and all of this had only started the day before.
I tried to take my mind off of it with some television, but it didn't do any good. All it did was make my mind wander to Bella once again. Finally I left my room and went to a late breakfast.
I could barely eat it and I could see Alice and Jasper giving each other worried looks. Alice kept looking at me and pursing her lips while Jasper kept patting my hand, as if somehow he would still be able to manipulate my emotions so that I would feel better. Finally after the long silence, Alice spoke up.
"Edward, this isn't healthy. I think you should get out of the hotel a little, go around Port Angeles. Get some fresh air," she suggested with a strained smile. I tried my best to smile back, but I just wasn't into it. I just nodded and sat up.
"Yeah, I guess that would be a good idea. Maybe I should go right now."
Alice nodded and I stood. I went over to the door and slipped on my shoes. I was about to leave when Alice came up to me with a key card.
"Here you go. This way you'll be able to get in when you come back from your walk. And I ordered your plane ticket for you. It's leaving tomorrow morning," she said. I forced a smile as I put the card in my pocket.
"Thanks, Alice."
I turned and went out the door. I felt like a huge weight was pressing against my chest as I thought about Bella. My Bella was no longer mine. I guessed that she was never really mine to begin with. I sighed as I got into the elevator and began to go down.
I felt the elevator reach the main floor and I stepped out and slowly dragged myself out of the hotel.

I flipped the last pancake onto the plate as I heard someone come up behind me and wrap their arms around my waist. I smiled and turned around to look up into Andy's eyes.
"Good morning, Bells. I hope you didn't make all of this just for little old me."He batted his eyelashes playfully as I laughed.
"No, it was supposed to be for me, you, Seb and my dad, but my dad grabbed his breakfast a little bit earlier. He had to get to work early today. So everything left over is for us."
I glanced at the clock and saw that it was nearly eleven. I knew we had to get eating and make our way to Alice's. Andy and I were supposed to be spending the day with her and Jasper.
"Well how about you give me something sweet to have with my pancakes."
I frowned in confusion.
"Well, we have maple syrup and whipped cream. What else could you want?" I asked.
"This. . ." And with that he leaned down and kissed me. His soft lips pressed against mine deeply, his arms crushed me against him.
I immediately reacted to his touch and wrapped my arms tighter around him, opening my mouth to his hot tongue.
The kiss deepened even more as our tongues began to tease and dance around each other. He began to move me and suddenly he lifted me onto the counter.
He stood between my legs as I ran my fingers through his silky hair. He pulled his lips away and began to nibble and lick his way down my neck. I let out a small moan as his mouth teased me and began to send hot shivers throughout my whole body.
"I've missed you, Bells and I didn't get to show you just how much last night," he whispered against my skin. I smiled and pulled his lips up and crashed mine against his. I had missed him, too, but hadn't realized how much until this moment.
"Oh, God, my eyes! Sheesh, guys, bedrooms are made for this type of thing, not kitchens."
I froze and peeked around Andy's head to see Sebastian leaning against the door jamb with his arms over his eyes and a grin on his face.
I pressed my face into Andy's shoulder as I felt myself turning red. I heard Andy chuckling as he hugged me to him and stroked my back soothingly.
"Yeah, bedrooms are for that, but this is Bella's house so she can do whatever she wants wherever she wants. And it's safe to open your eyes, drama queen," Andy said, his dry tone expressing his agitation at being interrupted. I couldn't see Sebastian but I could hear him laughing.
"Ha ha, I guess you're right about that. But anyway are those pancakes for us?"
"Yes. Bella made them for breakfast."
I could feel the heat in my face ebbing away. I took a deep breath before I lifted up my face and kissed Andy's neck.
He looked at me and stroked my face sweetly. I looked into his blue-green eyes and smiled.
"Are you alright?" he whispered. I nodded and he stroked my face one more time before he moved back so that I could slide off the counter. I smiled at Sebastian as he filled his plate with pancakes. I grabbed two plates and handed one to Andy as I looked at the pancakes.
"Hey, save some for me and Andy. I made it for all three of us, not just you," I said as I snatched a pancake away from him and put it on my plate. Sebastian pouted cutely as he moved to the kitchen table where the whipped cream and syrup was sitting.
Andy began to take some pancakes as I followed Sebastian to the table. I sat down and grabbed the syrup as Sebastian covered his pancakes in the whipped cream. Andy came over and sat down beside me. I handed him the syrup as Sebastian tried to snatch the syrup away from me. I stuck my tongue out at him playfully and he grinned at me.
"So what do you guys have planned today?" Sebastian as he grabbed the syrup from Andy. I put a forkful of pancakes into my mouth and thought.
"Well, Alice had wanted to spend the day with me and, of course, wherever I go, Andy goes. So I guess he's coming too," I said with a grin. Andy rolled his eyes as Sebastian laughed.
"Okay, well I'm going to be spending the day with Hyacinth. I know she missed me so this will be a great way for her to feel wanted." He chortled through a mouthful of pancakes.
I shook my head at that and continued to eat my pancakes. He grinned at me as he dug into his as well. Sometimes, I couldn't understand how such a sweet guy like Sebastian could be such an idiot sometimes. Lucky I was as nice as I was, because if it was someone like Mia that he had said that too, there would have been a problem.
Andy took my free hand as we sat there and caressed it very lightly. I turned to look at him and smiled. He smiled back as I stared at him. I took in the contours of his face, the lightly tanned skin, the sea-like color of his eyes. The eyes that had helped me forget about a pair of topaz ones.
A snap of pain cracked across my chest as I thought of that. I stopped eating for a moment and took a deep breath. I wasn't allowed to think of him. . .even though it had been so long, it still hurt.
I glanced at Andy as he finished up his pancakes. I still remember the day he had pestered me so much that I had just blurted out my feelings about Edward. That was the day I had completely broken down in front of him, and the first time that I'd let anyone, other than Jake, understand and know the true extent of my pain and how much I had loved Edward. It was also the thing that allowed me to be able to care about Andy and it brought us much closer.
I took the last piece of pancake off my plate and wiped my mouth. I smiled at the two of them and stood up.
"I'm going to go shower and get dressed," I informed them, throwing my dirty napkin down.
"We'll clean up," Andy said as he picked up my plate and his own. I saw Sebastian pout.
"Do we have to?" he asked as he walked over to the sink with his plate. Andy frowned at him for a moment.
"Yes, Bella made us this great breakfast. The least we can do is the dishes," he said. I smiled.
"Oh, Seb, you really are too much sometimes," I said as I left the kitchen and made my way upstairs.
I took a quick shower, washing away the smell of cooking pancakes off my skin. I went back to my room to find something to wear. I opened my closet and looked around. I rummaged around through the things currently hanging in there and eventually pulled out a fitted v-neck shirt.
I pulled it over my head as I looked around for something to pair with it. I caught sight of one leg from my light coloured skinny jeans poking out from underneath a pile of sweaters. I reached over and pulled it out, checking to see if there were any stains. They were clean so I quickly pulled them on, grabbed my wallet and keys, and ran downstairs.
The guys were sitting in the living room, flipping channels as I walked in. Andy looked up and smiled at me. I smiled back as he stood up.
"C'mon, Seb. Time to go."
Sebastian nodded and got up, flipping the television off as he did and tossing the remote into the couch. They followed me out as we made our way. I dropped Sebastian off at Angela's to be with Hyacinth and then set out in my car to Port Angeles.
On the way, Andy pulled out his mix CD and we sung badly and loudly through Paramore and U2.
We finally pulled into the parking lot of the Olympic Lodge. As we walked through the lobby, Andy grabbed my hand. I grinned at him as we reached the elevators.
I pressed the button and stood there anxiously, waiting with Andy.
The elevator doors slid open and Andy pulled me in, wrapping his arms around me as he loved to do. I giggled as I pressed our floor and hugged Andy, his back facing the elevator doors. I heard the other elevator open as well and a young man walked out. His tall frame was hunched over and his hands were in his pockets. I couldn't see his face, but my breath caught in my throat as I noticed something about him.
His hair was reddish brown, a strange color for hair, a colour that I had only seen on one other person. A person whose siblings were staying in this hotel.
My heart began to beat loudly in my ears as I stared at the guy's back, the elevator doors slowly closing and blocking him from my view.
