Chapter 6: Old Habits Die Hard
BPOV
"Bells can you get the paper?" My dad called from the kitchen as I kissed Andy quietly on the stairs. I pulled back and then took his hand. I dragged him into the kitchen. From the slight pink in my dad's cheeks I was pretty sure he had known what Andy and I had been up to.
"Good morning to you too dad. And of course. I'll be right back."
I turned away from the kitchen table and went out the front door. The warm spring air blew through the thin material of my Yale t-shirt and purple pyjama bottoms. I squinted at the morning light and looked around, my hand shrouding my eyes.
I took a long look at the area, my eyes taking in the all the cars parked on the street: mini-vans, trucks, early model Volvos and a couple of Volkswagens. The lush greenness of the forest winked at me from the trees, the sound of birds chirping and life waking up all around me made me smile. Warmth floated in the air around me and it made me glad that I was home.
I looked down the driveway and saw the paper lying at the bottom of the stairs. I skipped down them, my good mood and the weather controlling my movements, and picked it up. As I stood up, I glanced at the first page. The winner of the school science fair was on it, smiling up with a mouth full of braces.
I tucked the paper under my arm as I went back up the stairs and to the door. But a sudden shiver down my spine stopped me. I felt almost as if someone was watching me, so I turned and looked over the landscape again, my eyes scanning intensely. Nothing looked out of the ordinary; everything was the same as it had always been. I licked my lips lightly and then went inside shutting the door tightly behind me. I leaned against the front door and thought. I didn't understand why that feeling had overtaken me like that. No one had been outside except me so why had I felt that shiver.
It had shaken me for a moment but I tried to act normal as I went back into the kitchen. I waved the paper triumphantly and then handed it to my dad.
"Thanks Bells."
I walked over to the fridge, very aware that Andy was studying me as I opened it and pulled out the milk. I didn't turn to look at him as I took out a bowl from the cupboard and poured in some milk. I reached over for the cereal and accidentally knocked it over, causing cornflakes to shower the floor. I cursed under my breath as I bent down to clean up the flakes.
My dad didn't bat an eyelash at the accident, he was way too used to my clumsy days, but I could see from the corner of my eye that Andy was staring. I'd never been clumsy in front of him, I was lucky enough to have met him after I'd outgrown it, and the only times that it came back was when I was shaken over something.
I searched for the broom and then used it to sweep up my mess. When I'd finished that I got up and actually was able to pour myself a bowl of cereal and went and sat at the table beside Andy. He was watching me from the corner of his eye, but he sat there quietly.
My dad finally got up and got his holster and put on his jacket.
"Alright I'll see ya'll later for dinner." I nodded as he left the room and went out the front door. Andy and I were alone since Sebastian was still asleep upstairs. I knew as soon as my dad was completely gone, Andy would say something. And as I predicted, as soon as my dad's cruiser couldn't be heard anymore, Andy spoke up.
"What was that about Bells?" I glanced up from my cereal bowl to see him staring. I shrugged.
"Nothing. I'm always a little clumsy, lucky that you didn't meet me before I outgrew it. You wouldn't believe how many times I feared for my life because of it," I stated with a small grin, but Andy wasn't smiling.
"It wasn't just the clumsiness. You came in here with a strange look on your face. You sure you're alright?" He slid his hand over my shoulders and rubbed my back soothingly. I immediately reacted to his touch and leaned into his arms, resting my head on his shoulder as he held me close.
"Yes I'm alright."
I leaned up and kissed him on the cheek before I got up and took my bowl to the sink. I stayed turned away from him as I washed my bowl. I heard him sigh in relief.
"Good, I was a little worried you were having a moment and having second thoughts about us."
"No, it had nothing to do with that. I just felt a little off for a second that's all." I turned back around to see Andy's strange expression. I frowned.
"What?"
"You felt off?"
"Yes. That's all. Why, what are you thinking?" He hesitated.
"Well, you have been eating a lot more and feeling off, maybe you're..."
"Maybe I'm what?" He took a deep breath and looked me straight in the eye.
"Pregnant."
I stared at him for a full five seconds before I burst out laughing. I had to hold onto the counter as I laughed because I would have slid to the ground with how hard I was laughing. I couldn't believe Andy thought I was pregnant.
After two straight minutes of laughing, I wiped my eyes and looked at Andy's crossed arms and red face.
"It wasn't that funny Bella. It was a logical suggestion," He huffed. I sniffed and went over to him.
"I'm not pregnant. I'm absolutely sure, so you can relax."
Andy let out an audible sigh of relief. He took my hands and kissed them lightly. I laughed at how relieved he looked over my proclamation.
"Don't act too happy."
He glanced up at me and shook his head.
"Don't get me wrong Bells. I want to have children with you, but not just yet. I kind of just wanted it to be me and you for a while. And when we are settled then we could get started with building our family." I nodded in agreement.
"I know what the plan is Andy. We talked about it. I promise you at this time that the plan is still very much in effect," I whispered. He sighed again as I leaned down and kissed him. He held my face in his hands for a moment before he let me go. I stood up straight and went over to the kitchen window. I opened it and took in a deep breath.
"I'm going to go take a shower then we can go around the town."
I turned and made to leave the kitchen, but Andy caught me around the waist and pressed his lips to my ear.
"How about we save some water and I come and take that shower with you?" I grinned to myself as I put my hands on his arms and made my way up the stairs.
"That is an ironic idea, considering what we were just talking about."
Andy laughed but didn't contradict me as we grabbed our towels and made our way into the bathroom.
EPOV
I was starting to get bored as I sat in the truck. I had forgotten how much more interesting this was when I was a vampire and had all my abilities. Normal sleuthing was not as interesting. Of course I had gotten my glimpse of Bella when she'd come out of the house in her pyjamas. The morning light had danced in her hair and the warm weather had made her obviously good mood contagious.
But it had seemed like right before she had gone into the house, there had been a moment. She had looked back and stared at the area for a moment. For a second I held my breath, thinking she'd seen me but she easily went in again. I let out a pent up breath and relaxed in my seat.
I only had to wait a little bit longer before Bella's door opened again. This time her father, Charlie came out. He scanned the area quickly before he got into his cruiser. I pressed myself against the seats so as Charlie wouldn't see me as he drove by.
After he had gone, I turned back to look at the house. I could see into the kitchen through the window and I stared at it for a moment, before I noticed Bella come to stand in front. I squinted and could just make out her lips moving. Someone must have been in the room with her. Not even two minutes passed before I saw Bella burst out laughing. Even without my vampire hearing I could hear it faintly in the quiet neighbourhood.
I relished in that moment, to be able to see her smile. She laughed for a good while before she walked away from the window. I realized now, that Bella was not coming out of the house again for a while, so I decided to go and get myself settled.
I looked around to make sure no one was looking before I started the car and drove into town. I made my way to the new inn that seemed to have popped up in Forks during my time away.
On the way, I made sure to drive around all the sights of Forks. I hadn't realized until this moment that I'd missed the small town very much. I sighed as I went past Forks High School and the one diner. It seemed almost as if everything had a memory of Bella printed on it.
I eventually pulled into a small parking lot and got out. I took out my things and went into the inn. It was more so a large house that had a semi-parking lot beside it.
It was simply decorated inside with blue decorations and mahogany furniture. As I walked in a small woman with salt and pepper hair at the front desk smiled at me.
"Good morning. Would you like a room?" she asked politely.
"Yes thank you. What is the per night rate?"
"Well it is $45 per night, with complimentary breakfast, but if you are staying for a month or more, the flat rate per month is $1150 dollars."
"Well I'd like to take the flat rate for two months for now," I replied as I got out my credit card. She took it from me and swiped it through. Then when she was finished she handed me back my card and went into her computer.
"Alright, can I get your name and number?"
I gave it to her and she quickly put them into her computer. Then she turned the screen so I could double check everything. After I had, she printed out a copy for me to sign and then handed me a room key.
"You'll be up in room 4. Its up the stairs and the first door on your left."
I took my key and my luggage upstairs and found my room immediately. There was a small desk by the window, a single bed and a night stand with one lamp on top of it. On the left was a small closet which I set my things in. I sat down on the bed and thought for a moment. I didn't know how I was going to get close to Bella, but I was going to keep trying.

The next few days flew by faster than I expected. It seemed before I knew it Bianca was in town and was starting everything. She was quite pretty with her hair in waves and freshly coloured in dark brown with honey tones playing on the top.
But she was not playing around though, she'd already had her wedding schedule board ready for us when she came the first day. But the first thing that we did was figure out where and when we were getting my wedding dress. Andy had only heard of one bridal store and that was the only one that he thought I should go to. His choice was Kleinfeld's in New York. Bianca loved the idea of Kleinfeld's and called right away to get us an appointment.
I wasn't too excited about Kleinfeld's only because it was very extravagant and I wasn't too into the extravagance, but more into finding the right dress and sharing the experience with my Mom. But it didn't matter where I got my dress from as long as I got the dress of my dreams.
When that was finished, the only things needed were the tuxes and the bridesmaids' dresses. The dress fittings were going on at my house on a particularly windy and cloudy day. The verge of rain seemed to threaten the entire time, but the girls came over just as expected.
Their dresses were simple white dresses, that were going to be pinned and cut to fit all their sizes, but the color I'd chosen to have the dresses in was a light violet. It was a good thing that it went with all their complexions and was a really nice color.
Mia, Jhone, Hyacinth and Angela's dresses were floor length, strapless and each had either a ribbon that wrapped around their waist or no ribbon, while Alice, who was the maid of honour, her dress had a ribbon with a flower across the middle with a beaded bust Her dress was knee length as opposed to floor length like the other girls. It was very becoming on her. I liked seeing the girls all dressed up. They all looked beautiful and were going to be great in my wedding party.
Sebastian and Andy were in Port Angeles getting tuxes. Andy's other groomsmen were going to be coming a month before the wedding with their own tuxes and could have it altered by the same place that was doing it for Sebastian and Andy.
As I watched Alice prance around in her dress looking cute and sexy at the same time, I grinned.
"Alice you love that dress don't you?" I asked. She shrugged.
"I wish I could wear it every day. But I know I have to wait until the wedding. I can't wait until Jazz catches a glimpse of me in it he's going to flip."
"Yea, I can't wait until we go wedding dress shopping," I said. That's when Mia turned to me.
"So tell us again why we can't come with you?"
"Well I don't want too many people there, it might make me change my mind."
"Yes, I totally agree with Bella, you're a little too opinionated. You may make her pick the wrong dress just because of what you tell her," Angela piped in. Mia humped and Jhone and Hyacinth giggled.
"Yea, it's ok, we'll just see it on you when you get your final dress fitting. I bet you'll look so beautiful," Angela said as she beamed at me. I smiled back and sighed.
"I hope so."
"I am glad that we still get to go with you to New York though," Mia whispered.
"Well I've gotten everyone's measurements correct. That's it for today ladies, I'll see you all tomorrow," Bianca said as she stood up. I got up and led her to the door, where I gave her a hug and locked the door behind her.
As I turned the girls bounded down the stairs, Alice in the lead, they pulled me into the living room where we watched a couple of movies. As we finished the last one, I looked out the window and saw the gathering clouds.
"Hey ladies I think everyone should start to head home, the storm looks like it's going to be crazy and Alice you have a long way to go." All five women nodded in agreement when they caught a glimpse of the weather outside.
I walked them to the doors and hugged them each goodbye.
"Drive safe, and message me when you all get home." They all nodded as they made their ways to their cars and got in. I watched them all at the door, waving as they pulled out. I watched them drive off and round the corner. I sighed and wrapped my arms around myself. The wind was strong and was howling through the trees as I stood there and I hoped that Alice got home before it started. I also looked up the street and wondered where Andy was and hoped that he was on his way back.
I sighed and went back into the house.

As I sat in the car, my eyes beginning to droop because of how bored I was. Even the book I had wasn't fulfilling me the way I had wanted it to. I glanced at Bella's front door and saw it opening. I sat up eagerly, thinking maybe I'd catch a glimpse of my Bella. I watched as three young women, Angela and Alice filed out the house. And the person I'd been eager to see, Bella.
She was dressed in some cut-off jean shorts and a faded pink v-neck t-shirt. Her hair had been tied into a messy little ponytail with wisps of it surrounding her face. I sighed in ecstasy to see her fresh happy face. I watched her eagerly, my eyes drinking in everything about her as she hugged the five women goodbye and they each got into their cars. She stood there as each person pulled out and waved.
I sighed in ecstasy as she smiled. The wind whistled around her, tossing her hair around her. I took a deep breath, trying to smell her sweet scent as I once could. I watched her look up and down the street before she retreated back into the house.
I noticed no cars were in her driveway now, so I assumed she was now home alone. I wondered where her fiancé was. But at the moment I was slightly glad that she was home alone. In some strange way she was all mine and I didn't have to share her with anyone.
As I sat there, the storm began to pick up. The wind was really blowing. I could see trees swaying out of control and rain began to patter in huge drops on my windshield. I frowned at the storm and realized I'd have to leave eventually. At that moment my stomach decided to give me another reason as to why I'd have to leave. It basically yelled at me for neglecting it. I patted it lightly, not being used to having my stomach react that way.
I switched on the radio and listened to the weather report. The weather report made the storm sound severe enough that I decided I'd go back to my room in town and eat, before I decided whether to come back. I started the car, and gave Bella's house a fleeting look before I pulled out.
When I got back to the inn, they were about to serve dinner. I quickly took a plate and went up to my room. As I began to eat, I could feel myself beginning to relax. I just hoped that Bella wasn't home alone the entire night in this storm.
I finished up my plate and lay back on my bed. I could feel tiredness starting to seep into my consciousness. I shut my eyes for a moment, but a loud clap of thunder woke me up.
I glanced at the clock and realized I'd been asleep a couple of hours. I blinked and felt something inside me . . .I didn't know why but something was still pulling me toward Bella. I needed to be close to her even if I was in a car and she was in her house. I wouldn't be able to sleep well if I wasn't. I got up and began rummaging in my suitcase for my raincoat.

After I got out of the shower, I made my way downstairs to see if anyone was home. My wet hair dripped slightly as I went into the kitchen. I could hear the storm blazing around outside and I began to worry. I turned on the kettle so I could make some tea.
There was one message, which was from my dad. The storm had caused a few trees to fall and destroyed a couple houses and he was going to be working on helping clear things up. He didn't want me to wait up and that he'd be home as soon as he could.
I sighed as I hung up the phone. So Dad wasn't going to be coming home anytime soon.
I saw the glare of headlights and I quickly looked through the curtains to see if it was Andy. I sighed in disappointment when I realized it was just a black pickup truck. I quickly let go of the curtains and let them swing back into place. I walked over to the phone and as I reached for it, it rung. I quickly picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Bells it's me." I physically relaxed at the sound of Andy's voice.
"Andy where are you guys?"
"We're still at the bar in Port Angeles. We've been drinking and I don't want to risk driving that way through this storm. I didn't have too many just a couple beers but..." I pinched the bridge of my nose.
"And let me guess, Seb is wasted?" I heard nothing on the line which confirmed my suspicions.
"Okay, just get a place to sleep for the night on Sebastian. It's all his fault, it was his idea," I said.
"He meant well," Andy replied. I rolled my eyes, but I said nothing else about it.
"Alright I'll see you in the morning. Love you and sleep well."
"Ok love you too Bells. G'night."
"Goodnight." And with that I hung up. I pursed my lips over this whole mess while I got my tea ready. I guessed I was going to bed alone tonight. I just hoped my dad would get home soon.
I made my way upstairs, and read a book as best I could, before I got under the covers. The black comfortable feel of sleep converged on me quickly and completely.
EPOV
I don't remember exactly when I fell asleep again but I do remember the moment I woke up. It hadn't been very good.
A loud clap of thunder had rumbled through the air, and suddenly I felt someone pull me out of my car into the rain.
I fell hard onto the sopping grass. I was soaked in seconds, and still groggy from being woken up so suddenly.
"What the hell?" I heard before another clap of thunder went off. I looked up and saw the wet face of Jacob Black. His face was unclear and dark from where I lay, but I knew it was him.
I got up and stood in front of him as he backed up. He looked almost afraid to see me.
"What are you doing here? This is no place for you to be!" Jacob yelled.
"I know, I just-"
"Why were you sitting in a car outside Bella's house?" I hesitated for a moment.
"I needed to see her. Not bother her or interrupt her life, just see her," I yelled as lightening illuminated our faces. What I caught of Jacob's face, I could tell he was angry.
"This is sick Edward. She's happy now. It's taken her a long time to get to this place. It wouldn't be healthy if she saw you."
"I know, but you don't understand, now that things have changed…"
"I know that, but still you have to g-" A large lightening bolt struck a tree near where we were standing and Jacob grabbed me and moved me aside as it fell over with a crash. We both stared at it for a moment, before we stood up again.
I wrapped my arms around my body as the cold and water penetrated my clothes. I shivered against it as Jacob looked at me and shook his head.
"Get back in your car and go home Edward," Jacob said.
"Please-"
"Don't start that bullshit with me. It's over. I was here after you left, remember? I saw how broken she was, how dead you left her. I tried so hard to bring her back to life, and I did it. I was able to wake her up to life. And she found someone who could love her and be with her properly. They're getting married. Married, do you understand that? Now she's my best friend and I love her, so I won't allow you to ruin this for her. I won't!"
"Jacob I'm not trying to ruin anything, I just wanted to see her. That's all," I said. Jacob looked at me as another lightening bolt flashed. But as it did, I saw him look behind me and freeze. His mouth was open and the water was raining down and flooding his face. I frowned and turned, and my heart froze. Bella was standing there, staring right at us.
