Real Life-Chapter 4
"Shit, shit, shit." I mutter as I make my way to kitchen. I can hear Percy's voice along with Carrie and Jessica's laughter, "shit." I whine then walk into the dreaded, yet really delicious smelling kitchen.
"Morning baby," is the first thing I hear. I take a deep breath then look up to face Percy. He grins at me cheerfully then turns back to the stove. I look at Jessica.
"Good morning Annabeth," Jessica says primly then squeals, "you didn't tell me you where in a relationship." I groan and clomp over to the seat in front of Jessica.
"Good morning, Jessica," I say completely ignoring her and taking a seat, "how's Dad?"
Jessica's smile is genuine.
"He's doing fine now, he'll be in the hospital for rehabilitation for a few weeks, but he's recovering perfectly. They say he can go back to a more cautious, normal life!" Jessica says excitedly.
Jessica's at least fifteen-years younger than my dad, but at times like this, I can tell she really does love him.
I smile back at her.
Then freaking PERCY JACKSON walks up behind me and kisses my cheek.
"Do you like your eggs scrambled or sunny-side up?" he asks. I can hear the cockiness in his voice and I bat his hands away.
"Stop that, we're not dating Jessica. And I like my eggs scrambled. Sunny-side up is disgusting." Percy laughs then goes to make my breakfast. Carrie giggles from next to Jessica.
"Percy is Annabeth's PRINCE," she announces loudly then shoves eggs into her mouth.
"I knew you were hiding something from me!" Jessica giggles loudly, "I just didn't know it was this attractive."
"Jessicaaaaa." I whine. I can hear Percy's chuckles. I turn to look at him and he sends me a wink over his shoulder. He was never going to let me forget this.
Jessica shrugs and picks up her coffee, "Even if you weren't in a relationship, what is he doing here?"
"He had a car, and I needed a ride
"I'm just saying," Jessica backs off with a foxy grin. I slump over on the table and bang my forehead on my arm a few times.
"You weren't supposed to see him," I try to explain, "I was going to tell him to leave, but I must have fallen asleep or something."
"Well whatever the reason, I'm glad I met your boyfriend. No matter the circumstances. If he can cook, then you better keep him." Jessica declares.
"We are not dating," I say indignantly, looking up from my arm. Percy sets a glass of orange juice in front of me and ruffles my hair affectionately. He moves back to stove.
"Thanks," I say and take a sip.
"You seem rather used to this," Jessica notes, "do you guys live together?" she asks curiously. I almost spit out my OJ.
"Um…NO!" I say. Jessica jumps back at my sudden noise.
"God, you scared me, calm down Annabeth. Your getting all defensive…" another thought comes to my step-mother, "have you slept with him yet?" she hisses in a rather loud hushed whisper.
"JESSICA!" I cry, "What the hell!" I hear Percy's laugh and I flush bright red.
"You can't say the h word," Carrie states shaking a finger at me, "it's on our no-no list." I stare at Carrie then Jessica.
"So I can't say hel-the h word, but you can ask me if I've slept with Percy?" I ask, frustration obvious in voice.
"The h-word is bad. It's for hoo-li-gans," Carrie pronounces hooligans carefully before continuing with her lecture, "what's bad about sleeping with your prince?" I widen my eyes at the devil I call my niece. Jessica suppresses laughter and I feel a hand on my shoulder.
Percy sets a plate of scrambled eggs down in front of me then lifts me easily and slides into the chair under me.
"Yeah, Annabeth," He murmurs into hair, "what's wrong with sleeping with your prince?" I flush and struggle to get out of Percy's arms. I barely manage to wrench away.
"You are all sick," I get out without using any words from Jessica's no-no list, "I'm going to change or something!" I announce.
After seeing my father, and ensuring that he would be fine soon, Percy and I are in his car driving back to mainland New York. It's pretty impossible, but we fight almost over everything. The colors of the about to set sun, the radio station, his driving skills, my driving skills.
"You've never seen me drive!" I say, frustration bubbling, as Percy laughs, "you've never seen me drive! How can you just say that I suck at driving?"
"I can tell. You such a backseat driver, you told me to slow down at a turn a few minutes ago," he reminds me.
"I didn't want to die just because you're being risky!" I argue. Percy laughs again and takes another turn. He purposefully takes one hand off the steering wheel and places it on my knee.
"Holy god, Percy Jackson, ten and fucking two!" I scream and clutch my seatbelt.
"Calm down, I'm a great driver," Percy say as I flick Percy's hand off my knee.
"Oh god, I'm going to die today," I groan and bang my head against the glass window. Percy chuckles and we become silent. Totally okay with the silence, I rest my head in my elbow and prop it on the open window. About ten minutes later the car suddenly jerks to a stop.
"What the hell, Percy," I say without looking up.
"Look up," he says and nudges me.
"No." I say, feeling like a child.
"Annabeth, look up,"
I hesitate. He's never called me by my real name before, it sounds nice. I look up and out m window.
Percy's parked the car at a viewing area that's right above a massive drop, trees surround the area but the view of the valley bellow is clear. The sky, now darkening on the east, has been lit up with streaks of orange, red and pink. The sun begins to slowly sink below the horizon.
"Damn," I say scanning the sky and it's beautiful display of colors. The car suddenly begins to move again. Percy spins the car ninety degrees to the back of the car faces the sunset.
"Come on," he says pulling out the keys and hopping out of the car. I squint my eyes in confusion.
"Annabeth!"
As if my name is some sort of code, I move against my will and find myself sitting in the back of the car with the top propped open. It's not cold yet, but I can feel a cool breeze sweep over the entire land.
"Hey," Percy says after a few seconds, "Annabeth."
"Would you stop calling me that," I cut him off and turn to look at him.
"What, your name?" he asks, an eyebrow rose.
"Yes," I respond turning back to stare at the horizon.
"Can I ask why?"
"No."
"So what I'm hearing is that you like it when I call you baby," he says, and I can hear the grin in his voice. I turn to glare at him.
"No," I say then think over it, "it's just weird hearing you say my name." I defend myself and avoid his face.
"You like it when I call you baby," he sings almost giddily.
"No, I do not!" I shot back.
"Yes, you do," he chants.
"No I do not!" I say and cut him off before he can say anything, "I am not having the conversation with you." I move to hop out of the trunk.
"Wait, Annabeth," He grabs my waist and literally hauls my back inside. I look up at him with half annoyance, half surprise. He sets me down on his lap and wraps his arms more securely around my waist, "I'm sorry, I just wanted to watch the sun set with you."
I stop struggling and stare up at his handsome face, "what?" I ask in shock.
"You heard what I said," He turns to look back at me, "I just wanted to watch the sun set with you."
"No, no, no," I say narrowing my eyes, "I know that. I wanted know what you said before that."
"I didn't say anything before that," he says feigning innocence.
"Well, then we better get going," I say smiling to myself. I manage to shake off his arms and jump out of the back.
"Baby," he whines. I turn back and look at him.
"Come on," I say, "Or you can just let me drive."
"NO!" He says and scrambles out after me, "you are not driving Cherry, she's important to me."
"Cherry," I ask incredulously, "you're one of those lame-os who names his car?"
"Yeah." He defends himself. I raise my hands.
"No." he says. I turn around slowly.
"What?" I ask.
"No. We're not going anywhere," he says. I look back at Percy, who stands with his hands stuffed in his pockets, a slightly evil grin on his face.
"What are you talking about Percy, don't be such a child. We need to get home-" Percy strides up to me, yanks me against him, and covers my mouth with his.
Whatever I'm about to say is cut off as he slowly backs me up against the car. When he finally pulls away I open my mouth again.
"-before it's dark. And here you are making a fuss over the fact that you think I can't drive. God, Percy, grow up-" Percy's eyes widens in alarm then kisses me again.
This time he kisses me for a longer time, his fingers crawling up my arms to pin them against the car.
"-you don't need to be such a kid. How did you ever get a girlfriend, besides the fact that you're kind of hot."
Percy kisses me again. And again. And again.
"Stop that!" I cry, "You're distracting me." Percy laughs softly and kisses me again.
I don't know long we stay like that, pressed against his car, kissing. But when I look up again, the sky has darkened to a deep violet.
"I think we should go out," Percy says with unreadable eyes.
What.
